I went to Brockholes Nature Reserve on the first day of the summer holidays
Transcript
00:00For the first day of the summer holidays, I took my six, nearly seven year old son to
00:05Brockholes where we spent the day after I'd pre-booked some pond dipping.
00:10Now they couldn't find my reservation at first, that's here, but the two ladies that ran it,
00:15they let us on and we had a fantastic time.
00:18It's down at the raised beds and there was a group of about a dozen children.
00:22You get given a net that you do a figure of eight in, you get to put it in a tray and
00:27have a look at all the insects in there, you get magnifying glasses, identification sheets
00:32and the ladies who run it are really helpful.
00:41There's a number of activities happening at the nature reserve.
00:45Make sure that you book in advance because as you can see, the pond dipping event was
00:48fully sold out for that day.
00:54After the pond dipping, we headed down to the Kestrel kitchen for an early lunch.
00:59I had quite an expensive latte with vanilla syrup that came in at more than £4.
01:05My son had a children's meal and a slushie which came in at just under £10 and I've
01:11got to say that the choice of sandwiches for adults wasn't inspiring.
01:16I think there was cheese, ham and then like a red hummus vegetarian option and it was
01:21quite expensive.
01:22I saw there was a lasagna option for £10.90 so just be aware of the prices if you don't
01:28want to take your own food.
01:30After eating, we went on a short walk through the very beautiful countryside.
01:35There's little carved figures that you can go and find, there's a riverside walk, there's
01:40loads of beautiful wooded areas.
01:42It's really fantastic, you should check out on its own.
01:47My son's favourite area without doubt was the climbing and slide area at the top of
01:53the hill.
01:54That's very close to a wigwam area that you can make yourself.
01:58There is an area with mainly wooden equipment for smaller children.
02:03He wasn't as interested in that at his age but it's still pretty good and there's like
02:08a balancing beam as well that he really liked on the way back to the car park.
02:27Talking of the car park, there's a Mr Whippy ice cream van that's set up right next to
02:33where you have to pay and I got done for £8.60 on a fake magnum and a Mr Whippy.
02:40The ice cream was nice but just be aware of that and also don't forget to pay, it's £5
02:47all day which I think is quite reasonable.
02:49Just one last thing to mention, the roads and the car park are quite badly potholed
02:54in places so make sure you're looking out for that and drive slowly.
