00:00:00Inside Edge! There it is! They're getting back for two! England have won! What a victory
00:00:22in the dark! Nasser Hussein can't believe it! Look at that! Look at that balcony! Graham
00:00:28Thorpe has played a tremendous knock for his country today! What a marvellous moment
00:00:34that was. One of the best ever perhaps for English cricket. Hello, I'm Ralph Deller
00:00:39and welcome to this special look back at England's historic Test Series victory in Pakistan.
00:00:44Did you know that Pakistan had never been beaten in a Test match in Karachi? And that
00:00:49England hadn't won in Pakistan since 1961? Terrific stuff from Nasser Hussein and his
00:00:55team, and on the back of a splendid summer against the West Indies. Your commentators
00:01:01for the series are Simon Hughes and Dermot Reeve, but first this.
00:01:25Well struck! Nass Treskothic at his best, quick onto anything short. He's used to playing
00:01:54on fast bouncy pitches down in Taunton, and this slow pitch in Pakistan, well it won't
00:02:00test them if they bowl short. You're right there, I mean you just don't want to bowl
00:02:06too short at all. That was a successive boundaries to Treskothic, and really banged in far too
00:02:13short by Razak. Mushtaq Ahmed into the attack. Big sweep from Treskothic, and he's found
00:02:23the gap. He does favour the sweep shot against spinners. It's his positive option that he
00:02:29takes, and it's worked well, and it's brought up the England 50. Oh, another full toss from
00:02:41Sakhlin, just trying to bowl a little bit slower, and put away beautifully by Atherton.
00:02:47A rare boundary for him, it's a very slow outfield, but that really did ask to be hit.
00:02:52And Mike Atherton now has sneaked up into 6th place in the all-time run scoring list
00:02:57for England, nudging ahead of Len Hutton. 29 for no, we get after 35. And that brings
00:03:08up the England 100, neatly chopped away by Michael Atherton. What a fine opening partnership
00:03:14that is, 101, and that really is what the doctor and Nasser Hussain ordered. Once again
00:03:29the sweep, and once again falling safely. Picking his spot at the moment, Marcus Treskothic.
00:03:37And he's obviously decided that this is going to be the way he's going to play the leg spin
00:03:42of Mushtaq, and so far he's done it very effectively. Well this is potentially the
00:03:54danger period for England. Covering the ball in his hands as he approaches the batsman,
00:04:01and it did swing quite a bit that one. So I think your suspicions are correct, Dermot.
00:04:07This delivery is definitely ducked in late at Marcus Treskothic, it starts outside off
00:04:11and there, hoops back in, it's well played. You've got to make sure as a batsman you
00:04:15keep your toes out of the way. That's nicely played by Atherton, that's a rare half volley
00:04:24outside the off stump from Sack Lane, and he's dispatched it very well. It's such a
00:04:28slow outfield though, or maybe he's using not a very good bat, but it's three to his
00:04:33name anyway. Getting right on top of the cover drive. Not too much to shout about at the
00:04:44moment, Pakistan. Just the single, the running between the wickets, all the twos and threes
00:04:54taking their toll on the batsman, but it's enough for Mike Atherton to register a very
00:05:00effective 50. He's taken 121 balls, just the one boundary. Now he's got underneath this one,
00:05:09and it looks like it could be a catch, it is. So Treskothic has perished to the shot that has
00:05:16also brought him a number of runs. It's a fine innings by him, but it's a rather ignominious
00:05:20end. Well it's just what we were talking about, hitting against the spin, the top edge,
00:05:24it was comfortably patched in the end. Treskothic's got to go, he'll be bitterly disappointed. He was
00:05:30playing well, looking in control. And in comes Graham Thorpe at number three instead of Nasser
00:05:38Hussain. Maybe Hussain's having a break from having the pads on, but it also keeps the left
00:05:42hand right hand combination going for England. That's a good shot from Michael Atherton. Typical
00:05:50Atherton shot, square drive, a little bit too wide from Afridi and full, and that's well played.
00:05:55Four runs, not very often you see that today. No, it's only just got there, but it has brought up
00:06:02Michael Atherton's 7,000th run in Test cricket. Some achievement. Oh, big spin, big spin from
00:06:17Sack Lane. Not easy to play deliveries like this. A lot of revolution on the ball he's getting now.
00:06:25Kitched round about just outside leg, so Thorpe had to play it, and he was lucky he didn't nick it.
00:06:31It was a bit good for the keeper in the end. Short and wide. Oh, missed field. Well, it's definitely
00:06:46not their strength, Pakistan. They're poor in the field. They have been for years. Big appeal,
00:06:56Mushtaq Ahmed doing his victory dance. He can't believe it. He actually followed through towards
00:07:03the wicket keeper, didn't even look behind at the umpire. Let's see if Atherton looks behind at the
00:07:08wicket keeper as he possibly nicks that one. Well, he does. He has a little look behind. That's
00:07:13sometimes a telltale sign, but no obvious deviation there. So, got to give the batsman the benefit of the doubt.
00:07:18It's a chance. Just when we were talking about the Pakistani fielding not being their strongest suit,
00:07:29they put down a chance at slip. And it's Qaiser Abbas, the 18-year-old at first slip, who puts
00:07:35it down. That's quite unusual to see a teenager there in his first test, and Sack Lane, Mushtaq
00:07:39probably wishes it was someone a bit more experienced. Short and wide, and another missed
00:07:52field. Moeen Khan, the captain, must be pulling his hair out, as must be the bowlers. He's having
00:07:58a scratch of his head, Mushtaq. It's out. He's gone. Another sweep shot. Celebrations from the
00:08:09Pakistani contingent. Atherton's got to go. That's two England batsmen falling in the 70s, and two to
00:08:15the sweep shot. He's got him. Yes, up goes the finger. Daryl Hare has no hesitation. It was the
00:08:26quicker ball from Sack Lane, and it caught Alex Stewart on the crease. He should have been forward.
00:08:31It was a full length. He's got to go. A shake of the head. Very well bowled by Sack Lane. He does
00:08:37vary his pace so cleverly, and so deceptively. It deceived Stewart. He's gone back. He's trapped
00:08:43on the crease, really hardly out of the popping crease there. That's an easy decision for Daryl
00:08:47Hare. Stewart goes for three. In comes Nasser Hussain, now at number five. A little bit lower
00:08:57in the order than he would have expected. 177 for three. Not a good position to be in at. Top shot.
00:09:06Very good footwork from Nasser Hussain, just short of the boundary rope, and very quick on his feet.
00:09:14Well, he's perished. He's chipped it to cover. Wazzam Akram takes the catch. The England captain
00:09:24trying it once too often. He had success against Sack Lane, hitting him over the top. He tried it
00:09:30again. He's lobbed it to cover. That's a rather ugly end for the England captain. I could see what
00:09:35he was trying to do, trying to push him down the ground again, but that was the top spinner,
00:09:38deceived by Sack Lane, and Nasser won't want to look at that dismissal again.
00:09:43That's got to be close. It's out. Daryl Hare raises the finger. Sack Lane Mushtaq has his fifth
00:09:57wicket. He's taken all five, and Graeme Hick is on his way back to the pavilion. This one turned
00:10:01back sharply. And he's had a lot of trouble, really, throughout his defending. Graeme Hick
00:10:06in reading the spin of Sack Lane. I think he thought this was the straight-on delivery. It
00:10:10wasn't. It was the sharp off-break. He was trapped on the back foot, and really, yeah, that was fairly
00:10:15plumb. That's huge. Great footwork again from Craig White. That's gone miles, way over long off. Well,
00:10:29he's got a good bat in his hands, that's for sure, and he's got some talent. Solid shot. Well,
00:10:37too solid, certainly for the bowler. He should have stopped that, really, Qazi Abbas. Now,
00:10:42will it make the boundary? No. Again, more running for England, and a bit more running
00:10:46for the Pakistani fielders as well. They really haven't fielded very well in the last few minutes.
00:10:50And that partnership now, 125, is the record six-wicket stand for England in Pakistan,
00:10:57beating the previous in Lahore. Only one four still by Graeme Thorpe in that 97. And that could
00:11:10be the hundred. Now, are they going to be able to get back to three? I think they are. That's
00:11:16going to bring up Graeme Thorpe's hundred. Delight, elation all round from Graeme Thorpe,
00:11:20pointing to the dressing room. That really is a fantastic innings by Graeme Thorpe,
00:11:25coming in at number three, and he's really anchored England's first innings score here.
00:11:29That's a terrific knock. That's big. No one out at deep mid-wicket, and it wouldn't matter anyway.
00:11:39It's gone way over the rope. Darrell Hare raises the arms. Craig Wyatt is playing some innings here,
00:11:46and this is against Sack Lane. Really, Craig Wyatt's played out of his skin today. I don't
00:11:52know what he's been taking, but I wouldn't mind some of it. Sack Lane might be asking for a few
00:11:56different fielders. I think he needs a few more. Strong pull shot. No one out at deep square leg.
00:12:05Four more, and that's not what you want as a captain. You bring back your seamer, your spinners
00:12:10have been keeping it tight or trying to, and you decide a bowler bouncer. That is the first boundary
00:12:18Thorpe's hit today. 152 partnership, and Craig Wyatt's made 80 of those.
00:12:26Well, this should be caught. A top edge, and Sack Lane has finally hung on to one.
00:12:37It's a little bit of a tired stroke from Thorpe in the end. I think you can forgive him that.
00:12:42He's been out there an awful long time. He's really anchored England's innings.
00:12:48That's a model of concentration in his 118.
00:12:59It's over the top. Good footwork again from Anwar. There's a man out at long on,
00:13:06and he's picked his spot. Clever batting. He is timing it well on this pitch.
00:13:16Graham Hick introduced into the attack. Last over before tee.
00:13:24They're asking the question, and the finger's gone up. Daryl Hare has given outside Anwar.
00:13:30Inspirational bowling change by Nasser Hussain, and Graham Hick's done the job.
00:13:36It's a very interesting decision by Daryl Hare too, because a lot of umpires would have given
00:13:40this not out, saying the batsman was kind of playing a shot, but Hare does tend to give those out.
00:13:48That's enormous. Absolutely enormous. Straight over long off from Mufridi. Uncomplicated batting.
00:14:00Beautifully played by Inzaman. Too much width from Salisbury. Just hasn't really found the right
00:14:11length this morning. That's one of the Pakistan 150 for the last of two wickets.
00:14:21Giles has struck a great delivery. Not sure if it didn't catch Inzaman on the pad. If it didn't,
00:14:26it's turned enormously from outside leg, and come back and hit off.
00:14:31It's a fine innings from Inzaman. 63, very fluent.
00:14:37Well now, there's not a chance. No, it's wide of Gough, and maybe that's not all it has. It's gone
00:14:43all the way. That's a tremendous shot from Yohana, because it was a good bouncer from Craig White,
00:14:47and it's brought up the batsman's 50. That's a very good obdurate innings from Yohana.
00:14:52Oh, that's a beamer. It's gone all the way to the boundary. The signal is four byes from Daryl Hare.
00:15:10Lovely shot. Beautiful shot. It's taken him a while today to find his timing, Yohana.
00:15:15It's taken him a while today to find his timing, Yohana. He just lent on that,
00:15:21stroked it through the covers.
00:15:31Good shot. Used the pace of Giles. The quicker one up at 60 mph.
00:15:36A bit too much room, but a very wristy cut shot.
00:15:38That's a fine shot from Yohana. Beautifully timed, placed, using his feet cleverly. Good shot.
00:15:51Beautiful shot. Wonderful time. He looked like he just toppled over a little bit
00:15:57at the crease. This partnership now worth 104.
00:16:02They're asking, and I think they've got it. Last, Ashley Giles breaks this obdurate partnership for
00:16:08the ninth wicket. It's Yohana who's gone. A little outside edge. That was a fine delivery from
00:16:13Ashley Giles. Yohana's gone. Tremendous innings. Match-saving innings, if you like, comes to an end.
00:16:20He's gone for 124. Between them, Yusuf Yohana and Inzamam-ul-Haq scored almost half Pakistan's runs,
00:16:26and any hope of an England victory quickly fizzled out. England reached 77-4 by the close.
00:16:32There were some jitters against the spin, but all in all, the performance left skipper Nasser Hussain
00:16:36pretty pleased. That's our first match of the season, and we're going to have a great time.
00:16:42We're going to have a great time. We're going to have a great time. We're going to have a great time.
00:16:47Nasser Hussain pretty pleased. That's our first test match for about 13 years in this part of the
00:16:54world, so everyone's eyes were on us to see how we'd play the spin and the reverse swing
00:16:58and things like that, and we're fully confident now. We've taken some huge strides in this test
00:17:03match, but we've got to remember we won that first one day international, and then the wheels came off
00:17:07after that, so we'll keep our feet on the ground and keep working. Nasser Hussain then already very
00:17:13confident. The second test took us to Faisalabad, and again Pakistan chose to prepare a pitch,
00:17:19especially for their spinners, and the crowds flocked in to see England's first appearance
00:17:24in Faisalabad since the notorious Shakurana-Mike Gatting confrontation of 1987.
00:17:34They're appealing for LBW. I think it's still a touch high. Once again, Afridi ducking into a
00:17:41short ball from Darren Goff, but definitely not short enough to duck. Yeah, he's getting in a
00:17:45little bit of trouble with this bowling from Goff. It's hostile, it's very well directed, and it's
00:17:50inflicting a few bruises. It's a good reply. Similar delivery. That's the way to play it.
00:18:00Don't duck and take your eye off it. Afridi known for his aggression.
00:18:04It's almost a tennis sort of shot in a way. Flat bat, topspin pass, and it's certainly the way to
00:18:13answer the bouncer, but Darren Goff certainly got him going now. Shade of Afridi.
00:18:22He's gone. Caught at third slip. Darren Goff celebrates. Graham Thorpe the catcher.
00:18:27It went quickly, and that's good bowling from Goff. He's worked Afridi over and got his reward.
00:18:32Well, you're absolutely right there, and I said he'd got him going, and he's now gone,
00:18:36and that was superb bowling by Darren Goff. Probing away outside off stump,
00:18:41and really Afridi didn't look convincing in that innings of 10.
00:18:49That's too wide from Craig White. That's a superb shot by Sayed Anwar.
00:18:53You don't give this man any width, and he's definitely demonstrated that this morning.
00:19:02Should be caught, and it is. Comfortable for Graham Thorpe. His second catch
00:19:07of the morning. Ashley Giles is struck, and that's an irresponsible shot. He's thrown his
00:19:11wicket away just before lunch. Really should have been going into lunch 50 odd not out.
00:19:15He'll have to face the rod of his captain now. He's got him. He's played on. A good delivery
00:19:26from Ashley Giles. It's been played into the ground by Inzerman, but then it's spun back.
00:19:32The crowd can't believe it. Inzerman's gone for nought. Second ball.
00:19:40That's passed mid-on. A thickish edge, but will Darren Goff have to give that up? I think he
00:19:45probably will. It is a quicker outfield here than Lahore, and Elahi looking reasonably good at the
00:19:52moment. The pitch just showing a little bit of signs of wear. That's the area that the spinners
00:19:58might be aiming into later. The rough outside the leg stump of the right-handers. That's been
00:20:03created by the quick bowlers. Streaky, well bowled by Caddick. He's a good line and length.
00:20:16He's brought up another boundary though.
00:20:30Well, they're asking the question there. That's quite a good appeal actually.
00:20:34The batsmen playing across the line. Am I mean, as I'm not interested though.
00:20:38The thing to look for is did the ball turn? It did. It pitched. It straightened.
00:20:42If that's gone straight through under the pad and not glove, it's a good shout.
00:20:50Well, that's a strange shot. He's gone, I think. Yeah, Atherton's held on to it.
00:20:53That's a terrible shot by Salah Milahi. I don't know what he was doing. He must have
00:20:57thought he was in a one-day international there, but Ashley Giles has got his third wicket.
00:21:01Well, for some reason he's decided to give himself room, and in the end he's had to reach for it
00:21:06and got a top edge to Atherton. Look where he stood here. Way outside leg stump. Gone for
00:21:11the cut shot. You don't see that much in test cricket, but he's got a go for 41. Pakistan 130 for 4.
00:21:29Good shot. Beautifully timed and placed by Yusuf Yohanna. You really don't bowl
00:21:34anywhere around middle or leg stump to him on this pitch.
00:21:38Well, Hussain has brought mid on a bit straighter, but the catcher in it short mid wicket.
00:21:49That's a good shot by Abdur Razak. The short gully wouldn't have enjoyed that very much.
00:21:53He just missed his shins. It's another boundary. It's a typical Pakistani sort of shot.
00:21:58A back cut. A little bit too slow from Giles, giving the batsman a bit of time.
00:22:04Iain Salisbury into the attack in the 42nd over.
00:22:12And that's too short. Too short and too slow as well from Salisbury. It's important he gets
00:22:17the right pace to bowl on this pitch. And the right length as well.
00:22:34Well, ball through the gate. Razak aiming through extra cover. No contact with the ball.
00:22:41Contact with the stump though. Joy for Craig White. That came in quite a bit late from Craig
00:22:48White. Just clipped the top of the stumps. It was a magnificent delivery. And again,
00:22:52Craig White gets Abdur Razak's wicket. He's a little bit loose in defense and in attack.
00:22:57And he's paid the price there for really poor technique.
00:23:04Fine leg won't get round. This is a quick outfield. Ashley Giles, the fielder.
00:23:14Daring off the quickest of the England bowlers. And when it's a little edge, it flies off.
00:23:26Gone like a bullet. Craig White searching for that reverse swing.
00:23:31No one can equal to the task. Buckner signals four. We've seen that a lot today. And that's
00:23:36brought up the 50 partnership. That's a rare gift from Craig White. He's been being definitely the
00:23:42pick of the seamers for England. But he can't separate these two.
00:23:51Boy, oh boy. What a shot. It's gone all the way. Up goes the arms from Steve Buckner.
00:23:58Might have been the slower ball from Craig White.
00:24:03I don't think it was. And Moeen Khan has just picked it up and hoisted it over mid-on.
00:24:14Well, that was asking to be hit from Salisbury, I'm afraid.
00:24:17Much too short and really help yourself for Yohanna. And he did.
00:24:31That might go all the way.
00:24:35Over the ropes. And that's brought up a splendid 50 for the Pakistan captain,
00:24:40Moeen Khan. Congratulations from Yusuf Yohanna. And what a way to bring it up.
00:24:45It's a short arm jab. Straight over the boundary. And typical of Moeen Khan's innings.
00:24:52Very effective unorthodox style. But just what the team needed.
00:25:00It's in the air. There's a man back. Yohanna's fallen for the trap.
00:25:06Picked out the fielder. He'll be bitterly disappointed.
00:25:11At last, England have made the breakthrough. It's taken them an hour. And in a way, you could say it was another
00:25:16gimme wicket from Pakistan. But Yohanna has been out there for a long time for his 77.
00:25:27Well caught. Well bowled. Moeen Khan's gone.
00:25:31Pick of the bowlers yesterday. Ashley Giles for England. And he's got this one to bite.
00:25:35Just luring him into that little glide shot. But a very good innings from Moeen Khan.
00:25:4265 really pulled his side out of trouble.
00:25:53408 tests wickets to Wazir Makram. That's some record.
00:25:58He's bowling at the vastly experienced Michael Atherton.
00:26:00This really is going to be some battle.
00:26:08It's gone very fine. Atherton off the mark with a boundary.
00:26:19Oh, that's hurt. That's hit him in a nasty area. I think probably just
00:26:24near the heart or around the rib area. That's hostile bowling from Wazir Makram.
00:26:29Treskothic didn't really play it too well. He's decided to try and duck the bouncer.
00:26:34And it's a skiddy sort of pitch. It's better off trying to play the bounce and stand up and
00:26:38play it like Atherton. Treskothic normally will hook or pull if he picks the ball up early.
00:26:48Another very good crowd in here, even though it's the holy festival of Ramadan.
00:26:52Oh, he's ducked into another one. That was nasty. That could have been a really awkward injury for
00:27:02Treskothic. That was a good bouncer from Razak. He's had trouble locating the right area,
00:27:07but that one was a goodie. Treskothic getting into problems that Afridi got into when he faced
00:27:14Darren Goff. It could be that the background isn't too good here in Faisalabad.
00:27:19That's a better shot from Treskothic. That's a much better response to the bouncer. It's
00:27:23much better to try and play it on this pitch where the bounce isn't particularly high than
00:27:27to try and duck it. Well, this is Treskothic's strength. Much better off getting yourself four
00:27:36runs than a blow to the helmet or the rib cage. That was short. Never mind is the call from
00:27:45Mohin Khan, and that's because it's gone for six. He doesn't want his young bowler to get upset.
00:28:00Well bowled. Clever bowling. Canary has got his first wicket
00:28:04in Test cricket. It was the googly. Treskothic didn't pick it.
00:28:08I think he might have just fancied Canary a bit too much.
00:28:11I think he committed himself a little bit early as well, and it was the googly. Down the wicket
00:28:17goes Treskothic. His weight's forward. He can't get back. And look at Canary. Thanking his god
00:28:23that he's been delivered his first Test wicket. Maybe the first of many. Treskothic just looks
00:28:30back in dismay there. He knows he's been fooled. He's gone for 30.
00:28:41Good shot. Very good shot from Hussain. Over pitch from Canary. I think it might have been
00:28:48the googly. Still went through the covers, and then batting themselves into a good position.
00:29:01Well he's taken it. Johanna is asking, and Buckler's given it.
00:29:06So the resistance from Atherton is finally broken by Sakhlein Mushtaq.
00:29:10A judge caught at silly point. Back pad. Well it was a great bit of captaincy. Moen
00:29:14Conner just moved Johanna straighter, and it was a very good catch in the end.
00:29:19I think it was pad first. Yes, pad. Then maybe a little bit of glove or bat.
00:29:25It was a very good catch by Josef Johanna. Atherton's got a go for 32, and then 105 for two.
00:29:36Oh it's a leg break. A big appeal there, and I'm afraid Buckler's given it the finger.
00:29:42Hussain can't believe it. I wonder there, that's whether we've got a bit of a raw deal. I think he
00:29:48might have got a bit of bat on that. Well he's definitely looked at his bat. Unhappy with the
00:29:52decision. The replay will show us. Well he was right in front of his stumps, but I think that
00:29:58was bat first. Buckler gives it the little nod before the finger goes up. Of course the umpire
00:30:04doesn't have the benefit of this replay, but that's going to show us that it almost came off
00:30:07the middle of the bat. That's another very unjust decision to Nasser Hussain, and I think he knows
00:30:12it. Just have a look at this. The change of the expression on the face. Total disbelief.
00:30:19That's a friendly delivery from Kaneria, and it's dispatched very well by Graham Thorpe.
00:30:26Dispatched it was. There's three close catches around the bat, so
00:30:29plenty of room out on the boundary. Just the one-man at deep backwards square to avoid.
00:30:34Well that's well placed by Salisbury. Probably should have been fielded by that short fine-legged
00:30:39man, and it's run away for four. So a boundary to each of the England batsmen. It's important that
00:30:46Pakistan have a good lead, and they've certainly been quite successful in that.
00:30:50Well, that's well placed by Salisbury, probably should have been fielded by that short fine
00:30:56legged man and it's run away for four, so a boundary to each of the England batsmen.
00:31:02It's important that Pakistan try and get the night watchman out quickly.
00:31:07Evidence here of how quick the outfield is, no more than just a little tickle around the
00:31:12corner by Salisbury.
00:31:15That's a good shot from Ian Salisbury.
00:31:21Sacklane just hasn't quite found his line in length today yet.
00:31:24And that was really an authentic stroke.
00:31:27That was an excellent cricket stroke by Salisbury.
00:31:30It was a half volley, he got a good stride in, kept his head down.
00:31:34Not the worst player in the world.
00:31:38That's a fine shot from Graham Thorpe.
00:31:43Accepting the challenge of one outside the off stump and going to 50.
00:31:47And that's a beautiful way to bring up your 50.
00:31:49It's been a great vigil from Graham Thorpe, out there for over three hours.
00:31:53A fine innings for his side.
00:32:02Fingers up, Salisbury's got to go.
00:32:05Ashad Khan has struck, he's bowled well.
00:32:09Salisbury does get a good stride in, but occasionally that means you just play a bit too low.
00:32:13This has come off, I think, the glove.
00:32:18Just flicking the glove there, and a good sharp catch by the silly point, Yusef Yohanna.
00:32:23Fine innings from Ian Salisbury, very good effort.
00:32:28Interesting vantage point.
00:32:36That's more like it from Alex Stewart, that's the kind of shot he likes.
00:32:40Cleverly found the gap there between the cover and extra cover fielders.
00:32:45A little bit of freedom to play his favourite cut stroke.
00:32:51Wasn't all that short, but well on top of it.
00:32:59Well, he's miscued that, now that's a chance.
00:33:02And it's accepted by Abdur Razak.
00:33:05Stewart just couldn't restrain himself, and I'm afraid he's paid the price.
00:33:11Well, they've been in for a long time, he never looked comfortable against the spinners.
00:33:15Went for the slog sweep.
00:33:17Top edge, well taken.
00:33:20Abdur Razak, the fielder at mid-on.
00:33:22Stewart's got to go for 13, unlucky for him.
00:33:24England, 235 for 5.
00:33:27Very close.
00:33:29The nod, in fact the double nod from Steve Buckner.
00:33:32That's always followed by the finger.
00:33:34Graham Thorpe's got to go.
00:33:36It's been a fine innings again for his country.
00:33:39The Surrey left-hander finding some good form out here in Pakistan.
00:33:42But Wazim Akram in the new ball has made the breakthrough.
00:33:47Well, finally they've found a way through that defence of Graham Thorpe.
00:33:50That's a fine delivery from Akram.
00:33:53But that's been a really resourceful, patient innings from Graham Thorpe.
00:33:57Almost 6 hours at the crease.
00:34:05There's a man out there, the shouts to catch it, and he's done just that.
00:34:09A very good catch indeed by Yusuf Yohanna.
00:34:13The trap was set, and well I can't believe Graham Hick's fallen for it.
00:34:16He never looked like he was trying to keep it down.
00:34:19It's a brainless shot really from Hick.
00:34:21He knows the man's out there.
00:34:23He knows Thorpe's just gone the ball before.
00:34:26He almost fell over as he played the shot as well.
00:34:28And really that's a sorry end for Graham Hick.
00:34:312.74 for 7.
00:34:40That's very well bowled, and it might have carried.
00:34:43Afridi's thrown it up.
00:34:45He doesn't seem to have any doubt.
00:34:47Ashley Giles is staying put though.
00:34:49It was a good delivery.
00:34:50Bounced on Giles.
00:34:52This new ball has really done the trick for the Pakistanis.
00:34:54That's a fine catch.
00:34:56It looks perfectly legitimate from Shai Afridi.
00:35:00Good bit of pace from Abdul Razak, and Giles is on his way for naught.
00:35:04So the innings just starting to fold now.
00:35:10He's gone for the hook, and he's middled it.
00:35:13That's a tremendous shot by Craig White.
00:35:15Clearing long leg.
00:35:16It was a good bouncer from Razak and going all the way.
00:35:18Fantastic shot.
00:35:24That's big.
00:35:26Craig White has given that everything.
00:35:28It's flown over long off.
00:35:30Well up into the stand.
00:35:32A huge six from Craig White off Canaria's first ball.
00:35:46This could be out.
00:35:47He's gone for the hook.
00:35:49Good catch.
00:35:50Ashley Giles coming in at deep fine leg.
00:35:52Afridi's gone.
00:35:53England have the breakthrough.
00:35:55That's a wild stroke from Afridi so early on.
00:35:58It's good bowling from Goff.
00:36:00He set the track, and I'm afraid Afridi fell into it.
00:36:05Good catch from Giles, but Afridi really not playing the kind of innings that Pakistan need.
00:36:11He's gone for ten.
00:36:16Beautifully played by Salim Elahi.
00:36:20Very strong off his pads, as are all the Pakistani players.
00:36:23That's gone to the boundary.
00:36:24That's his first Test 50, so a landmark for Salim Elahi,
00:36:28and he's responded very well to the job of coming in to open for Pakistan in the absence of Saeed Anwar.
00:36:33He's played exactly the kind of knock his team required.
00:36:41Shots have catched.
00:36:43He's gone for that sweep.
00:36:45The fingers up.
00:36:46Good tumbling work from Alex Stewart behind the stumps.
00:36:49This must have come off his glove.
00:36:53Very good reflex work by Alex Stewart.
00:36:55Very agile, but that's exactly what we were saying.
00:36:58That is a dangerous shot to play, the sweep into the rough outside the leg stump.
00:37:02And it just clipped his glove on the way, but a good innings by Salim Elahi.
00:37:0672, very fluent.
00:37:08His best score in a Test match.
00:37:11Beautifully played by Razak.
00:37:13That's going to be a boundary.
00:37:14Cleverly opened the face there.
00:37:16Now Pakistan are really starting to flow.
00:37:22That'll be it.
00:37:23Well played, Abdur Razak.
00:37:26Back for the two.
00:37:30The bat raised.
00:37:31The crowd applauded.
00:37:34And we've also got the declaration.
00:37:36We've got a maiden Test 100 for Abdur Razak too.
00:37:39He started patiently, but he's been really flourishing this morning.
00:37:43It's been a beautifully played innings.
00:37:46The declaration left England looking for 244 to win in a minimum of 62 overs.
00:37:51By no means impossible, and actually they made a pretty good start.
00:37:55But then wickets fell at regular intervals,
00:37:57and it was Michael Atherton who patiently stayed at the crease yet again
00:38:01to steer England to 125 for five at the close,
00:38:04and so it was another draw.
00:38:06Although the ending did look just a little nervy.
00:38:09It was nervous only because we've put so much hard work into this game.
00:38:12I don't think we deserve to lose it.
00:38:14So, you know, I'd have been suicidal tonight if we'd lost another five wickets,
00:38:17but I never thought we were going to.
00:38:19I'm quite pleased now.
00:38:20Very pleased with the way our side have played.
00:38:22We're unbeaten.
00:38:23We haven't lost a Test match for a while,
00:38:25and we're playing some good cricket.
00:38:27Two Tests gone.
00:38:28Two Tests gone, and neither side able to break the deadlock.
00:38:31Most interesting, though, was the way England coped with the Pakistan spinners.
00:38:35So after two draws, the England players headed south
00:38:38to the bustling metropolis of Karachi for the decisive Test match.
00:38:42The national stadium in Karachi was a fortress for Pakistan.
00:38:46No visiting team had ever won there.
00:38:48So the preparation of this pitch was all important,
00:38:51and both teams were searching for the right formula
00:38:54that could win them the season.
00:38:57Well, that's worth asking.
00:38:59And the nod comes from Steve Buckner and the finger.
00:39:02So a very good early breakthrough for England.
00:39:04Said Anwar goes, LBW to Gough.
00:39:13Top shot.
00:39:14Finding the gap between gully and cover.
00:39:18That went like a bullet.
00:39:21Oh, it's gone down.
00:39:24Kaneket, third man.
00:39:27It wasn't an easy chance.
00:39:28He made good ground to it.
00:39:31He couldn't hang on to it.
00:39:33Let his Somerset colleague down.
00:39:40Well, that's the way it's done.
00:39:42That's the way it's done.
00:39:44That's the way it's done.
00:39:46That's the way it's done.
00:39:49He's gone.
00:39:51In the air, Marcus Treskothic has his first Test wicket.
00:39:55Big smiles all round.
00:39:57The change has worked.
00:39:59Good captaincy as well from Hussain.
00:40:01He's thrown the ball to Treskothic because there's a bit of swing.
00:40:04And he's done just what his captain ordered.
00:40:06Picked up the wicket of Imran Nazir.
00:40:14Slashed away.
00:40:16It was on the up.
00:40:17He's looked a bit loose today, Salah Malahi.
00:40:19He played so well in the second Test.
00:40:25Big shout.
00:40:27Well, that was desperately close.
00:40:30It hit Inserman on the back leg.
00:40:33Perhaps the only thing that might have saved him was an inside edge.
00:40:38His bat hit something, maybe the ground.
00:40:40Yeah, it hit the ground.
00:40:41He missed that completely.
00:40:43That should have been plumb LBW, I'd say.
00:40:46Well, maybe there was an inside edge after all.
00:40:49But it must have been desperately close.
00:40:55Well then, off the inside edge.
00:40:57Kadik has got a wicket.
00:40:58It's taken him a long time since his last one.
00:41:02Salah Malahi, while he was trying to hit that two square, paid the price.
00:41:12Shot.
00:41:14He's really laid into that, Inserman.
00:41:16No need to run for that.
00:41:20He loves it off the back foot.
00:41:25Very hot here in Karachi.
00:41:2641 degrees centigrade.
00:41:35Went very quickly.
00:41:37I'm not sure Nazir is saying that Slip got a hand on it.
00:41:39It's gone to the boundary.
00:41:41Might go down as a half chance.
00:42:00Well, that's beautiful footwork.
00:42:02That wasn't too short from Ashley Giles.
00:42:05Inserman's used the crease so well, he's rocked back and cut it for four.
00:42:11Through the offside again.
00:42:13Opening the face of the bat.
00:42:15Another boundary to Inserman.
00:42:18Taking a liking to Ashley Giles.
00:42:24A little bit streaky.
00:42:25And it's another boundary.
00:42:29Ashley Giles just looks a little bit tired today.
00:42:35And that's his 50.
00:42:37That's going to go for the third boundary in the over from Inserman Ul Haq.
00:42:42None of them have been really bad balls from Giles.
00:42:44Just that big bat which is raised now.
00:42:47Doing the job for him today.
00:42:55That's well played by Inserman.
00:42:56That was another one from Giles.
00:42:58Wasn't all that bad a ball.
00:43:00Just flicked away nonchalantly.
00:43:08Not quite timed by Johanna but it's good enough.
00:43:12Using his feet very well to Giles.
00:43:17Both these batsmen playing very confidently so far against Ashley Giles.
00:43:21He hasn't found the spin that he did in the first two tests.
00:43:27Quite delicate from Inserman.
00:43:29Nobody there.
00:43:30That's going to be another boundary.
00:43:32So Giles just wavering in his line a little bit today.
00:43:35He's a little bit annoyed with himself.
00:43:37Just lacks a bit of energy and potency on the ball today I think.
00:43:48Well that's where he's strong.
00:43:50That's going to go all the way to the boundary.
00:43:52And it's also going to bring up a very fine 50 for Josef Johanna.
00:43:56He got 100 in Lahore.
00:43:5778 at Faisalabad.
00:43:59It's been more of a supporting knock today to the more fluent Inserman.
00:44:03But equally as important for his team.
00:44:05He really is a rock that Pakistan can build around.
00:44:12Scores in this series so far pretty consistent to say the least.
00:44:20It's got through and down to long off for a single.
00:44:24Not the best shot Inserman's ever played but a very significant one.
00:44:27It's brought him up a single and it's taken him to a thousand runs.
00:44:31In this calendar year.
00:44:32The first man to reach that landmark.
00:44:36Great achievement.
00:44:38Johanna's in fourth place.
00:44:39756 runs in the calendar year so he's not doing badly either.
00:44:46Big full toss.
00:44:47Got the treatment.
00:44:48And Josef Johanna could pick his spot.
00:45:02Loose stuff from Salisbury.
00:45:03He does pitch two or three in the right place.
00:45:06Every over and then gets one wrong.
00:45:12That was the googly from Salisbury.
00:45:14But well read by Johanna.
00:45:17It's a neat little shot.
00:45:20Brings up the 150 partnership between these two.
00:45:24And they're looking very, very difficult to dismiss at the moment.
00:45:32Down the track.
00:45:33He's got hold of it.
00:45:36And it's gone all the way.
00:45:38The first six of the day.
00:45:41Very quick on his feet.
00:45:42Josef Johanna plays the seamers so well through the leg side.
00:45:47Against the spinners.
00:45:49He likes to hit them over the head.
00:46:02Oh dear, that was asking for the treatment from
00:46:06Triskothic.
00:46:07It was the attempted slower ball.
00:46:08It just didn't come out right.
00:46:10But Inzamam enjoyed it.
00:46:20He's finally got one through.
00:46:21Inzamam goes to 100.
00:46:24And what a sparkly innings it's been.
00:46:26It's only his third hundred on Pakistan soil
00:46:29out of the 12 that he's made in Test cricket.
00:46:32So it's a landmark achievement for him.
00:46:34He loves batting in Karachi.
00:46:35Averages over 80 with the bat here on this wicket.
00:46:43Found the gap.
00:46:44There it is.
00:46:46A hundred to Josef Johanna.
00:46:47His second in three innings against England.
00:46:51Great achievement.
00:46:59What a catch.
00:47:00That's stuck.
00:47:01Ashley Giles, his first ball, has made the breakthrough.
00:47:04Johanna used his feet, tried to hit it down the ground.
00:47:07Ashley Giles just plucked this one out of nowhere.
00:47:11Ashley Giles is quite often criticised for his fielding,
00:47:13but I can tell you he can catch.
00:47:16Johanna's gone for 117.
00:47:18Pakistan 323 for four.
00:47:20He's got him.
00:47:21Treskothic.
00:47:22Another fine catch by England.
00:47:24Treskothic in the covers, diving low to his left.
00:47:26Craig White has picked up Inzamam.
00:47:29One Centurion follows back the other.
00:47:32Great anticipation from Marcus Treskothic.
00:47:34And finally, Inzamam pries from the crease.
00:47:38But that really was a glorious innings of 142.
00:47:41And it's been a great season.
00:47:42And it's been a great season.
00:47:43And it's been a great season.
00:47:44And it's been a great season.
00:47:45And it's been a great season.
00:47:46But that really was a glorious innings of 142.
00:48:02Well, that's a neat little shot.
00:48:04I think that was the straight honour from Sack Lane.
00:48:07Look at that run away.
00:48:09That'll give Treskothic a bit of heart.
00:48:11England's first boundary.
00:48:17Up!
00:48:19Out!
00:48:20And what a catch!
00:48:22We have seen some fielding today.
00:48:24England were excellent.
00:48:25And now Imran Nazir at cover has jumped high to his right.
00:48:30And he's plucked off what was a loose shot from Treskothic.
00:48:34He showed his colours in the one-day series, Imran Nazir.
00:48:36But he didn't do anything quite as dramatic as that.
00:48:39Slowish pitch.
00:48:40Treskothic didn't get over the top.
00:48:42Unfortunately, he's on his way back for 13.
00:48:47Out!
00:48:52Excellent shot.
00:48:53Very good batting from Mike Atherton.
00:48:55It's brought up the England 50.
00:48:58Once again, a lot of pressure on the shoulders of Mike Atherton.
00:49:02And that's four.
00:49:03Finally, the England captain finds the boundary.
00:49:07And this was a stylish shot.
00:49:08He got right down on one knee.
00:49:10There's a lot of determination there to try and make sure it got to the boundary.
00:49:15And a little bit of admiration at the end as well.
00:49:19Out!
00:49:21Out!
00:49:23Out!
00:49:25Out!
00:49:26Out!
00:49:27Out!
00:49:28Out!
00:49:29Out!
00:49:30Out!
00:49:32In the gap again.
00:49:33Quick outfield here at the National Stadium in Karachi.
00:49:38A chase from Afridi to no avail.
00:49:41Mike Atherton enjoying batting today.
00:49:50That's going to go all the way.
00:49:54Maikar Younis has mixed it up.
00:49:55He's trying to get that reverse swing, the occasional slower ball.
00:49:59It's brought up the England 100.
00:50:04Out!
00:50:06That was a good one.
00:50:07Drew Mike Atherton into the shot.
00:50:10A very good line.
00:50:12Danish Canaria.
00:50:13And it's only the odd ball that turns.
00:50:23At last, Hussain manages to get one through.
00:50:26That's going to go all the way.
00:50:27And that's going to make Hussain feel a lot better.
00:50:29That's his best first-class score this year.
00:50:32Those supporters aren't actually clapping his best first-class score.
00:50:34It's also the 100 partnership.
00:50:41He's got hold of that one.
00:50:43It's gone all the way.
00:50:44Never mind Saki, the call from wicketkeeper Moeen Khan.
00:50:49Not his normal accurate self.
00:50:51This one was right in the slot.
00:50:54Hussain down the track, gave it everything.
00:50:57It's gone to slip.
00:50:58Not sure there was any bad involved.
00:51:02Well, he's walking.
00:51:03Hussain's gone.
00:51:05Once again, I think it was a deflection then off the wicketkeeper's gloves.
00:51:09The England captain's out.
00:51:11And he's absolutely furious to be out after all that long hard work.
00:51:14But yes, he did get a little outside edge off the wicketkeeper's leg.
00:51:17And sharply caught by Inzamam.
00:51:20Not one of Hussain's best innings.
00:51:23But he's got the ball.
00:51:24Not one of Hussain's best innings.
00:51:27It was a real dour struggle.
00:51:29But it's one of his most important innings.
00:51:31Ending that run drought.
00:51:32England 163 for 2.
00:51:35Mike Atherton on 99.
00:51:42That could be it.
00:51:43They're running.
00:51:44And Alex Stewart's home.
00:51:47Well played Mike Atherton.
00:51:49It's his first 100 against Pakistan.
00:51:51His 16th of his career.
00:51:53And it's been typical gritty Atherton stuff.
00:51:55Well, it has.
00:51:56It certainly hasn't been his most entertaining innings.
00:51:59It's been stoic, determined, dogged.
00:52:01And his 100 came up in the 100th over.
00:52:10Up high!
00:52:11Well, that's a great catch.
00:52:12I think that was back pad.
00:52:13Yes, Steve Buckner confirms that.
00:52:15That's a brilliant piece of work by the silly point.
00:52:18Very, very close in there.
00:52:20He reacted incredibly quickly.
00:52:23Well, it had to go straight to him as it went quickly.
00:52:27That's in slow motion.
00:52:28He is in close, Yousef Yohanna.
00:52:30Stewart had used his feet as well.
00:52:31That normally takes the close catchers out of the game.
00:52:34Good sharp work.
00:52:35Sack Lane's got a wicket.
00:52:37Stewart's gone for 29.
00:52:39256 for 4.
00:52:46Out!
00:52:47Hick's gone.
00:52:48Good catch by Afridi at square leg.
00:52:50Graham Hick doesn't add to his overnight score.
00:52:53He's out for 12.
00:52:54Big disappointment.
00:52:56Very good catch by Shida Afridi at square leg.
00:52:59Graham Hick hangs his head, and well he might,
00:53:02because several times in this series he's got into the teens
00:53:06and connected with pull shots,
00:53:08only for them to be caught in the outfield.
00:53:11Just hasn't been able to go on after getting himself in.
00:53:15Another low score from Graham Hick,
00:53:17and England now 278 for 5.
00:53:20That's found the gap.
00:53:29Just the fingertip on it, but it's gone to the boundary.
00:53:33Sack Lane Mushtaq, the fielder.
00:53:35Nice controlled hook shot from Craig White.
00:53:38He's played this shot very well all series.
00:53:41Don't bowl short, Craig White, I don't think on these pitches.
00:53:45Very confident shot.
00:53:51That's big.
00:53:54Over mid-wicket, all the way from Craig White.
00:54:01He's done that a couple of times to Sack Lane Mushtaq in the series.
00:54:04Once over long off, this time over mid-wicket.
00:54:08Absolutely the right way to play for Craig White.
00:54:11Fourth right down the order.
00:54:13It's working very well at the moment.
00:54:15It's just as well he wasn't at mid-wicket for Pakistan as well.
00:54:19Top catch.
00:54:21Mohin Khan.
00:54:23That's gone very quickly.
00:54:25Abdul Razak has struck.
00:54:27He's got Mike Atherton out.
00:54:29A monumental innings comes to a close.
00:54:32England still trailing by 96 on the first innings.
00:54:36What a heroic effort from Mike Atherton.
00:54:39And equally good from Mohin Khan.
00:54:41I suppose there's two things.
00:54:44FSa выгравали по матчу.
00:54:48One is he climbed on it,
00:54:50and it's a slighty loose shot by Atherton.
00:54:53The first really in that huge, epic innings of 125.
00:55:09He's out.
00:55:12out look for a moment as it might have brushed his thigh pad but uh goff gets a wicket well that was
00:55:17a bit of a bonus you can just see that little brush of the glove there as it went through waist high
00:55:25so imran nazir again fails at the top of the order there's a man out there what a catch
00:55:37tremendous work graham thorpe the field around a deep square leg and was gotta go
00:55:45a really brilliant effort by a man who normally fields two or three yards from the bat
00:55:49and now he's taking a catch 75 yards from the bat side anwar out for 21
00:55:59shot four rounds from the moment it left the bat good pace from katic he's running
00:56:05like goff he's been hostile and he's up against inzeman now
00:56:18well struck in salisbury the chaser he might just get there
00:56:24no the ball one well timed again by inzeman the crowd enjoying this little cameo
00:56:30the thing to watch for here is how straight his back was as well look at that just a little push
00:56:37beautifully timed the power of the stroke from this man too much for everyone
00:56:46peg back the off stump and some men left it he tried to kick it didn't get any of that big frame
00:56:52in the way it turns sharply and ashley giles has now taken more wickets than any england
00:56:58tourist in pakistan this is how the third test was poised after the fourth day on a knife edge
00:57:06still three results a possibility one a pakistan win perhaps the least likely
00:57:12two an england win and three the odds on favorite the draw
00:57:16oh big turn from ashley giles that'll give him some heart
00:57:28difficult for alex stewart to take though and it's gone for probably four buys
00:57:36i think stewart felt the angle was going to take it down the leg side
00:57:39confirmation coming through that it didn't go for four but the angle that ashley giles bowls
00:57:47from going to take that ball down the leg side with a bit of drift big turn beat everybody
00:57:54except darren goff
00:58:03got the attempted yorker wrong darren goff
00:58:06that's nicely put away by sack lane they must get rid of him
00:58:09he's being a real thorn in england's side this series with the bat
00:58:15night watchmen love this they get the chance to bat up the order with a real batsman
00:58:23that's the snowball from golf yes he's gone steve buckman gives the nod and then the finger
00:58:29cleverly bowled by goff again get sack lane with the off break he did that in the first innings
00:58:34once again perhaps sack lane getting a taste of his own medicine beautifully bowled there's the
00:58:40spin and there was a little bit of it hitting sack lane on the back leg no doubt about that
00:58:45plum in front that's going to hit middle about halfway up england have the first
00:58:50breakthrough of the day sack lane's gone managed only four pakistan 78 for four
00:58:58tremendous series yusuf yohana two centuries already
00:59:05and that's a good first delivery trying to shake him up darren goff i think he felt that
00:59:12absolutely not wearing a chest pad that would have tickled up the ribs
00:59:17darren goff working some good pace up first thing this morning
00:59:26oh streaky just the one slip in place
00:59:29up around 90 miles an hour for most of this spell darren goff that's gone very quickly
00:59:33it would have taken some catching only one slip in place perhaps they should have had two
00:59:46rare short ball from ashley giles got the treatment
00:59:49from ashley giles got the treatment
00:59:53now he's been very watchful so far giles finally drops one short
01:00:00did turn a little bit from giles but it also sat up
01:00:07good use of the feet from salomon a little bit like kinsman getting right back on his stumps
01:00:11we've seen that a lot throughout the series if you bowl straight at yohana he'll whip you
01:00:22through the leg side this time the ball beating darren goff the lead for pakistan now 126
01:00:31seconds
01:00:39that could be another boundary second four in the over to use of yohana greg white doesn't like it
01:00:49i'm not surprised he doesn't i think england have seen
01:00:53too much of use of yohana in this series certainly darren goff has
01:01:02so
01:01:07nicely played by salomon lahi
01:01:11again well-timed the ball rushing away across the outfield really after just a little push
01:01:18he does try and drive the ball square that's how he got out in the first innings actually
01:01:21getting an inside edge and dragging it on from caddick looking for the boundary square
01:01:26that time managed to get away with it
01:01:31oh that was close to being straight onto the stumps from
01:01:35ashley giles i think the batsman was back in his ground though
01:01:41pakistan just compiling a useful lead now
01:01:52quicker ball from giles had a bit of width on it yohana enjoyed it
01:01:56he's varied his pace well in this spell ashley giles in fact throughout the series
01:02:03that was the attempted arm ball i think
01:02:14that'll bring up the 50 partnership between this pair and caddick
01:02:18throwing at the bowlers end just trying to catch yohana off guard
01:02:26it's been a fairly sedate partnership the 50 coming off 128 balls but important for pakistan
01:02:39he's gone the little glove down the leg side imran nazir fell off a glove also caught alex
01:02:45stewart off darren goff this time it's his yorkshire colleague craig white simple catch
01:02:49to stewart yohana's gone and that's a big wicket for england because it's the first time yohana's
01:02:55failed to make 50 in this series it's a good bouncer from craig white tucked him up a little
01:02:59bit and just brushed his glove on the way through craig white surprises people with his extra pace
01:03:06that really climbed on yohana sure it was in the right position and yohana for once has failed
01:03:12they're asking and he's gone a double breakthrough alahi follows yohana back to the pavilion
01:03:28england have opened a door they certainly have after one dismissal so often another one immediately
01:03:35follows on pitches like this that was a back pad and thought at last manages to grab hold of one
01:03:41he's missed a couple in there but well bold ashley giles he's persevered and finally got his reward
01:03:49128 for six now pakistan just tottering slightly
01:04:00he's out yes straight off the face of the bat we've seen a pad back catch to graham thought
01:04:07now it's mike atherton he's the squarer of the two silly points ashley giles has got another wicked
01:04:13almost squeezed into that sort of short gully perhaps uh was that should have been a bit
01:04:19further forward there it was a nice simple catch to mike atherton and delight for england 41 balls
01:04:26abdurazak just for a single hasn't played his natural game 139 for seven
01:04:31oh just wide of graham hick mowing khan gave that everything and graham he could just move
01:04:43to third slip and that went straight in the gap where he just come from
01:04:53caught nasa hussein at mid-off well bold craig white that was the slower ball
01:04:58england have got a real chance now just two more wickets left to complete the innings and there's
01:05:03enough time in the day to knock the runs off and that's a vital blow they've managed to
01:05:08winkle out mowing khan who can be such an awkward customer he can get lots of useful
01:05:13runs down the order that was a clever bit of deception from craig white a slower ball he
01:05:18played too early and nasa hussein after a couple of attempts managed to cling on i bet he's happy
01:05:24about that getting his opposite number dismissed and pakistan now 143 for eight only a lead of 160
01:05:41shot well there's no hanging about for shahid afridi irrespective of the situation that was
01:05:47a perfectly decent ball from craig white flayed away to the boundary this is a dangerous time
01:05:52for england if afridi plays his natural game scores some quick runs here he'll
01:05:56back pakistan to safety we saw abdurazak be far too uh sedate
01:06:09now they're going for a single oh whackers run out by more all sorts of things happen there the
01:06:16for short lakefield has been hit on the on the body whack has been run out stewart's hit the
01:06:21stumps the main thing is it's another wicket to england marcus trescothic won't mind this he's
01:06:27taken a blow for his country he's saved four initially that would have gone to the boundary
01:06:33and they've gone through for a quick single great work from stewart throwing on the turn
01:06:37wacker unis is well short pakistan nine wickets down
01:06:43i think that's good observation there from stewart as well just checking that
01:06:46marcus trescothic's all right wacker unis isn't all right he's gone for nought
01:07:00i think that's probably got nasir saying in a rather nasty position
01:07:05a little bubble and we all laugh about it but it's extremely painful that
01:07:17at least he stopped it
01:07:30big appeal out i thought he might have got a little bad on it
01:07:34steve butler didn't he's moved across his stumps pakistan bowled out for 158 that's the lead of 175
01:07:43what a terrific performance from england take a long look at this scorecard england will happily
01:07:50dine out on it for quite a while after being 71 for 3 going into the final day pakistan collapsed
01:07:57to 158 all out the last six wickets falling for just 30 runs the top scorer salim elahi with just
01:08:0537 the england bowling led so well by ashley giles and darren goff as it had been so often
01:08:15in the series three wickets apiece for them yet it was craig white who picked up the vital fifth
01:08:20wicket of yusuf yohana breaking the only partnership in this innings that threatened
01:08:24to spoil england's day this the match score england needing 176 to win from 44 overs and
01:08:32with time the crucial factor here the question on everybody's minds would the light hold
01:08:44that's a positive start from michael atherton
01:08:48he wouldn't play that shot in the first innings all that short from abdurazak and dispatched for four
01:08:56quite right it wasn't all that short excellent shot he's in really good touch
01:09:02so
01:09:07beautifully played by marcus triscothic that didn't really get up much from wacker unis
01:09:13in fact it sat up almost gave it everything as well come over to my side
01:09:25now that's nicely timed from michael atherton and well placed
01:09:28i think you'll have to give that one up abdurazak
01:09:32just the kind of way that atherton needs to play if england to have a chance here
01:09:37well they're going for him no doubt about it not only are they playing
01:09:40positive shots but the run in between the wickets is excellent
01:09:47that's a class shot from mike atherton no need to run for that
01:09:52well placed a half volley from wacker as well and just beautifully timed by atherton
01:10:08top shot just a turn of the wrist it was actually very straight from razak
01:10:12another boundary atherton's off to a flyer
01:10:16foreign
01:10:18it's a very neat shot as you say on the stumps just a flick of the wrists he's got to 20 took
01:10:25him all session in the first innings now this is well this was always going to happen i'm afraid
01:10:35knowing khan he's been taking his time moving the fielders around atherton and triscothic have
01:10:41managed to keep patient buckner's lost his patience now that's a warning to mowing khan
01:10:46pointing in his watch i'm watching you young man stop wasting time i suppose most teams
01:10:51would have used some kind of delaying tactics in this situation off the edge but safe another
01:10:58boundary that's flown mike atherton's given this everything he's really in one day mode out there
01:11:04they know it's not going to be easy when the spinners come on they're going after the quicker
01:11:07men it's under four runs and over still 10 wickets in hand
01:11:22found the gap mowing khan has gone with a very defensive field
01:11:27no close catches to sacklay and mushtaq and even if you go on the defensive
01:11:32good batsman will still find the boundary
01:11:40top edge and caught england lose their first wicket the defensive field well it's work for
01:11:46mowing khan yeah it's a perky little opening stand that by england after just trying the
01:11:54paddle sweep not getting it quite right but he defied the idea that perhaps alex stewart
01:12:01should have opened the batting because uh he's given england some early initiative there with
01:12:05that 26 catch it there's a shout of catch it well there was a man out there he's only going
01:12:21to catch it if he's on the other side of the rope it's gone all the way canary's first ball
01:12:26tres gothic dispatched him for six
01:12:41pulled away by tuscothic and that really should have been fielded i think waka unis was the guilty
01:12:46party there at mid on sort of belly flop to the ground should have made more effort
01:12:51it was a beautiful shot it stayed low javid meandad the pakistani coach
01:12:56all sorts of signals from the dressing room
01:13:04oh he's got underneath that a little bit now there's inzamam and he's taken it excellent
01:13:10catch by inzamam al-haq moving very well to his right difficult in the atmosphere and the sun as
01:13:16well to judge that one trascothic trying to hit the ball square and not getting it quite right
01:13:22and he's hitting against the spin the top edge it was good work he's a big man inzamam but he got
01:13:27round patched it safely just got he's gone for 24 england 51 for two
01:13:35uh he's got his line wrong there canaria trying to bowl around midland leg to thought
01:13:49but that was asking to be here
01:14:06mohan khan's asking the question
01:14:08i'm sure it's gone i didn't see the finger come up i think he walked stewart he knew he got a
01:14:14little inside edge there that was a simple catch to mohan khan let's see if he did get the edge
01:14:21yeah it's a little bit unlucky for alex stewart really
01:14:25he'll be bitterly disappointed he's gone for only five it was positive putting him up to number three
01:14:30the new man at the crease
01:14:42that's got through they're thinking about two they'll have to be quick
01:14:47i'm not sure moan had the ball in his hand he's certainly pretty annoyed about it he's giving the
01:14:54fielders all sorts of advice and shouts it's quite hard to concentrate actually when that's happening
01:15:00and really he should be concentrating harder on taking the ball himself i think
01:15:05trying to sweep it onto the stumps and failing miserably
01:15:16it's going to go all the way i'm not sure there was any bat or any leg on it
01:15:22four buys a signal knowing khan's having a nightmare not only with his field placements
01:15:27but also with his keeping
01:15:36not sure what's happened they're running
01:15:43we've got it's a direct hit thought was well home but we got bails off at both ends here
01:15:49this could could take a bit of time to sort out just as well we've got tv replays isn't it
01:15:53so even the accommodators need help to work out what's happened here certainly uh looks like
01:15:58mowing knocked his bail off with his glove at one end and then insomams throw it the
01:16:04wicket at the other end but in each case the batsman was home
01:16:15well played it stayed low he got a bat on it they're coming back for two again and in
01:16:21england hundreds up they're on course for a famous victory that's very good
01:16:26running between the wickets from graham thorpe as well all their fitness trainings paying dividends
01:16:40shot from graham thorpe that's very well played he hasn't had many balls out there to play that
01:16:46sort of shot too and he found the gap expertly shouter fredie's bowled extremely well
01:16:51but thought really took full advantage of that the time creeping up now
01:16:56it'll be dark in about 45 minutes england need these runs as soon as possible
01:17:02and home again another great run steve button is calling for the third umpire my gut feel is
01:17:09graham thorpe's made his ground he's backing up so far the running's been brilliant up to now
01:17:15basically if the batsmen decide to go they're going to get in for almost anything and they
01:17:20have their 52 to win from 11 overs but darkness really falling here now in karachi
01:17:33that must be yes thank you steve buckner
01:17:37you can't bowl out there he's being so negative not bowling at the stumps
01:17:40hey could be two and is
01:17:55the running has been brilliant
01:17:58mowing can't trying to encourage his team he's feeling the pressure though
01:18:02he's gone on the defensive england wickets in hand
01:18:05well that's amazing i've never seen graham hick play the reverse sweep great idea against
01:18:15a freedie he bowls it so fast any middle paddle or reverse is going to go very quickly 31 to win
01:18:21now for england eight overs left and waka unis brought into the attack he's taking a long time
01:18:31to get ready though and get his field set and that's an official warning to
01:18:34the pakistanis from steve buckner about time wasting great umpiring about time
01:18:47that's a brilliant shot by graham hick how he picked that ball up in this light
01:18:52it's half dark he wouldn't play club cricket in this kind of light quite often
01:18:55and yet he's seen a short of a length ball and put it away through mid wicket
01:18:59well i wish he'd play like this all the time that isn't that bad a ball but he's being positive
01:19:11fall upon the pull as well doesn't really time it but in some arms way back at mid wicket
01:19:16and that gives a single to bring up graham thorpe's 50 what an excellent resourceful
01:19:20innings it's been as well and it's bad at his side to the brink of victory they can just keep
01:19:26going this pair it's very dark not difficult for anybody new to come in
01:19:33he called him hit goes in a valiant attempt to try and hit waka unis over the top i think that
01:19:40was probably an inside edge but hick has played a very good hand there in trying to get england
01:19:45up to this score it's been a top knock disappointment there was an inside edge onto the pad
01:19:50he can count himself unlucky but 40 of 64 balls against these tactics in this light top effort
01:19:57england captain about to face his first ball
01:20:01oh i think he's dropped it i think nasser hussein got an edge to that he flung the
01:20:07bat at it and mohammed khan flung the glove at it it wouldn't stick
01:20:13definitely a chance you could say he's safe for he's standing very close
01:20:22third man's got a long way to go they're going to get back for two
01:20:27excellent batting to come in in this sort of light and even while he got an edge first ball
01:20:33but he got a good bat on his second i bet their hearts are in their mouths in there
01:20:37it's been a frenetic little period of play since hussein's been at the wicket
01:20:45it's an edge i couldn't pick it up to start with i'm not sure waka did
01:20:49it's going all the way moen's paid the price for not having a slip in six runs now for victory
01:20:56he's also played the price for bowling he's over slowly because he's now saying i think that
01:21:01nobody can see the ball least of all him behind the stumps
01:21:11that's true it's true all the way to the boundary none of the field has moved they couldn't see the
01:21:17ball graham thought doesn't mind certainly doesn't mind i think it was only him and our cameraman
01:21:23who knew where that shot went two to win for england now and pakistan's unbeaten record at
01:21:28karachi is about to go inside edge there it is they're getting back for two england have won
01:21:41what a victory in the dark nasa hussein can't believe it look at that look at that balcony
01:21:48graham thorpe has played a tremendous knock for his country today
01:21:53delighted england players and rightly so this had been a memorable final days cricket in karachi
01:21:59certainly the highlight of the whole series remember
01:22:02england at the start of the tour were firmly odds against
01:22:12and there the evidence of it all a wonderful knock in the fading light of karachi from thorpe
01:22:16he really has had an outstanding series and successfully saw off pakistan's big weapon
01:22:22their spin bowling their rovers to spare in the end as well pakistan's bowling eventually
01:22:28destroyed by some class batting so the final story a very pleasing one for english cricket
01:22:33england's first win in pakistan since 1961 everything we did in the in the summer was
01:22:40great but that was a brilliant series all i said to him this morning was let's keep the
01:22:44pressure on them we saw the press this morning and the pressure was on them the local press
01:22:48were giving a lot of stick and i said the only way they'll relieve the pressure is by hitting
01:22:51boundaries keep the pressure no runs no runs and the wickets will come and they did you never know
01:22:57with us you know there's been so many things that have gone on in the last year you can never ever
01:23:01say when england are playing that a game's finished either way and that's why our boys
01:23:05have had to concentrate again for every day right until the end because you never know with us which
01:23:09way it'll go we know we've got a hell of a lot to do before we beat australia that is for certain
01:23:14but we're doing the right things at the moment and it's been a great year for english cricket
01:23:18a magnificent year and we'll worry about the ashes when when they come around next year the one
01:23:23against the west indies was a bigger moment because it was at home and the euphoria at home
01:23:27but i think this was more of a more of a performance to win out here a better performance
01:23:33essentially it was a team effort but michael atherton was judged to be man of the match for
01:23:37his first innings 125 pakistan were left with just a man of the series award that went to their
01:23:43outstanding batsman yusuf yahana a wonderful moment for you was your 1600 and you were able
01:23:50to win this game for england yeah we weren't in a great position after the first day so the way we
01:23:55we came back in the match and to win the game was an incredible achievement i thought
01:23:59how difficult was this wicket it was a pretty good wicket there was more pace and bounce than
01:24:03the other two at feistelbad and lahore um and that's probably why there was a result in the
01:24:07game at the end well some thought that you batted just a touch slowly in the first innings and
01:24:12you showed the way in the second was it a game plan well our plan was always to try and get up
01:24:18to pakistan's total and try and put them under pressure second time because we know they've got
01:24:21a proud record here and would be a little bit twitchy second time round okay well done michael
01:24:27thank you so undiluted joy in the england camp a job well done to complete a memorable year for
01:24:33english cricket but of course there's always another one to come and what a year it promises
01:24:37to be two tests against pakistan at home and then it's the real test the ashes the england
01:24:43players upset the odds with this historic win in pakistan now bring on the australians
01:25:07so
01:25:37so
01:26:04you
