00:00Vice President Kamala Harris addresses the Democratic Party for the first time as a presidential
00:07hopeful, stepping in after incumbent President Joe Biden withdrew his bid for re-election
00:13amid pressure from party members disappointed in his debate performance and worried about
00:18his mental acuity and ailing health.
00:20In the days and weeks ahead, I, together with you, will do everything in my power to unite
00:27our Democratic Party, to unite our nation, and to win this election.
00:33Biden, who is still recovering from COVID at home, listened in by phone, vowing to campaign
00:39alongside the former California Attorney General.
00:42I'm watching you, kid.
00:43I'm watching you, kid.
00:44I love you.
00:45I love you, Joe.
00:49Campaign sources say Harris, the daughter of Indian and Jamaican immigrants, has enough
00:54support from Democratic delegates to win the party's nomination.
00:59In the first 24 hours since Biden dropped out, the vice president has raised 81 million
01:04U.S. dollars for her campaign, the most ever in a single day for either party this cycle.
01:11And with key endorsements from top Democrats, like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Harris
01:16is pulling further ahead of other potential contenders.
01:21Anybody who might have been a formidable challenger to her has now endorsed her just
01:27over the last few hours this morning.
01:30So it's hard to see if there's anyone who would really contest it.
01:33Meanwhile, in his first solo rally in Ohio, Republican vice presidential nominee J.D.
01:41Vance slammed Harris and other Democrats, saying they, quote, lied about Biden's mental
01:46capacity to serve as president.
01:49Every single person who saw Joe Biden knew that he wasn't capable of doing the job.
01:54And for three years, they said nothing until he became political deadweight.
01:59Vance's comments shed light on the Republican Party's shifting strategy, pinning the responsibility
02:04for what they see as Biden's failed policies equally on Harris's shoulders, on top of targeting
02:10her individual record.
02:12But Harris is pushing forward, contrasting her experience as a prosecutor with Donald
02:18Trump's as a convicted felon.
02:19But with the Republican nominee having a head start in the presidential race, Harris has
02:25her work cut out for her.
02:27She may have her party on side now, but she has less than four months to go to convince
02:32American voters that she's the right person to lead the country.
