What does Biden stepping down mean for the US election?

00:07according to the polls and the experts, basically because he embodied the past.

00:12Now suddenly, Donald Trump, at the age of 78, is the old man in the race,

00:16making rambling, long-winded speeches.

00:19So this contest could be thrown wide open if the Democrats

00:23unite swiftly behind Kamala Harris as she gains crucial early momentum.

00:29Now, she's a strong voice on abortion rights,

00:33but she's seen to have performed weakly at times on immigration,

00:37two crucial issues in the US election.

00:40The other key question is, is she a good campaigner?

00:43And on this, the jury is very much out.

00:46Certainly during the 2020 race for the Democratic nomination,

00:51she made some stumbling performances against Joe Biden.

00:54Where the jury is not out is on Trump.

00:58He's the first ex-president to be convicted of a crime

01:02over the Stormy Daniels hush money scandal.

01:06Now, as a former attorney general, she will have the skills and the background

01:11to pursue him over his other alleged crimes.

01:14But he will ruthlessly try and exploit any weaknesses.

01:18So this contest, it's impossible to call.

01:22And it may well be that America elects its first female president

01:27in its 248 year history, or history could repeat itself.
