SONA 2024: Escudero vows Senate will remain steadfast in defending national sovereignty

Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero on Monday, July 22, said the Senate will remain steadfast and unyielding in defending the country’s sovereignty. Escudero made the promise in his speech during the opening of the 19th Congress’ Third Regular Session this morning.

00:00This independence, which we treasure and enjoy, is what we also desire for our nation.
00:07Make no mistake about it.
00:09This Senate is unanimous and unbending in defending our country's independence and
00:14sovereignty.
00:15Tayo'y makikipag-kaibigan, pero hindi tayo pasisiil.
00:18Tayo'y makikipag-usap, pero hindi tayo magpapapi.
00:22As such, we shall pass laws such as Maritime Zone and Sea Lanes Act, which will strengthen
00:30our claims over what is already ours.
00:34We will strengthen our military, but not to ignite any conflict, but in order to secure
00:40the peace.
00:42We shall take peaceful measures to defend our people's right to sail in our seas and
00:46fish in our waters, as what our ancestors had done and what our children and grandchildren
00:54shall likewise do.
00:56Indeed, we must work towards bridging these troubled waters.
01:01I am confident that we shall overcome whatever disagreements we may have with any of our
01:07neighbors, given our centuries-old amicable relations with them, where this point in time
01:13in our current history, to me, is a mere speck.
