00:00:46Welcome to the first night of the Proms 2024 from the Royal Albert Hall in London.
00:00:52It's been one heck of a summer of live sport and music so far and now the baton has been passed to us
00:00:58to kick off the BBC Prom season and we're so happy about that.
00:01:02Over the next eight weeks we'll be bringing you an incredible line-up from some of the world's best performers,
00:01:08orchestras, soloists and conductors.
00:01:11There are so many exciting concerts ahead.
00:01:14We've got much-loved works like Holst's The Planets and Beethoven's Ninth as you've never heard it before.
00:01:20We've got pop royalty Florence Welch and Sam Smith.
00:01:24Superstar cellists Yo-Yo Ma and Sheku Kanamason.
00:01:28And we've even got a disco prom this year.
00:01:31And all that is just the tip of the iceberg.
00:01:34Well, tonight you have the best seat in the house because with us are comedian and broadcaster Sandy Toksvig

00:02:00I just can't deal with the size and scale of the venue and just the whole feeling is overwhelming
00:02:07and I cannot wait to hear that first sound of live music.

00:02:16I mean, we were here in the same position last year, Clive, first night of the proms.
00:02:19The programme's different. The excitement is exactly the same.
00:02:21The orchestra tuning, that packed audience chattering, fabulous.
00:02:24Wonderful. Coming up, the BBC Symphony Orchestra give us a right royal welcome
00:02:29with the ultimate crowd pleaser starting us off with a bang.
00:02:32See what I did there? It's Handel's firework music.
00:02:35Then soprano Sophie Bevan and pianist Isata Kanamason
00:02:39will give us powerhouse performances with Bruckner's Psalm 150 and Clara Schumann's piano concerto.
00:02:46And after that, no introduction needed.
00:02:51Beethoven's simply iconic Fifth Symphony.
00:02:54What a line-up and it's only the first night. Incredible, eh?

01:21:47So, quite rightly soaking up the appreciation of the audience here at the Royal Albert Hall.
01:22:00Niamh Chan and the BBC Symphony Orchestra and of course, the BBC Singers.
01:22:08And the concertmaster there, Neil Ferris.
01:22:17My word. Nikki, come on now. That was incredible.
01:22:27That was captivating. It was a textural feast whilst being incredibly moving in many, many places.
01:22:40But it was also sort of cleansing. Do you know what I mean?
01:22:44There's a wonderful quote by Baron Boyman. He said that music never just laughs or cries, it laughs and cries at the same time.
01:22:51And I've never heard that more than in that one piece.
01:22:54I think it would have been fine, whatever the manners of the audience, to laugh out loud, I think would have been fine.
01:22:59And then I found myself strangely moved by it as well. It did both things.
01:23:03Truly wonderful. Well, it's here. Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.
01:23:08Now, I have to say, if you ask anyone to name a composer, nine times out of ten, a classical composer, they will mention Beethoven.
01:23:17In their first breath. Why do you think that is?
01:23:19Surely it's the first four notes of this particular piece, do you not think?
01:23:23It's so iconic. I find it hard to believe anybody would not know it.
01:23:28Known by everybody, Nikki.
01:23:30I mean, some people just speak across time. They have a transcendental spirit. That is Beethoven.
01:23:35That is Beethoven, absolutely. Eileen Chan loves this work. She's performed it on a number of occasions.
01:23:42And here she is to tell us why she loves it.
01:23:45Beethoven's Fifth is a really monumental piece.
01:23:50And I always ask myself, why do we need to hear this again?
01:23:55Why is it so famous? Because I think it really touches and shocks everyone from the beginning to the end.
01:24:01This whole journey from darkness to light. Who doesn't love a good journey? Who doesn't love a good story?
01:24:07And I think this, you know, universal human struggle from, you know, confusion, frustration, which we have a lot today.
01:24:15And how do we find hope? How do we find solace and triumph?
01:24:20I think that's what I really want to put in my interpretation as well. And we shall see.

01:55:08her first night debut, and what a cracker it's been.
01:55:17Everyone on their feet here at the Royal Albert Hall.
01:55:32It is, of course, one of the most recognisable pieces in the classical repertoire,
01:55:37yet Sandy, in the hands of the right orchestra, it never gets tired.
01:55:43It doesn't, and also in the hands of the right conductor.
01:55:47She was so expressive, it felt as if she was sculpting the music out of the air.
01:55:52I've rarely seen a more joyous way of conducting an orchestra.
01:55:57Absolutely wonderful.
01:55:58And Nikki, Eileen Chan, her work tonight, impeccable.
01:56:03Oh, she has just been explosive.
01:56:05She's done a fantastic job the entire evening.
01:56:08I know her personally, I love her.
01:56:10She is a beautiful person, but don't be fooled by this smile.
01:56:16She is absolutely laser-focused in such a serious position.
01:56:20It's, yeah, it's absolutely a privilege to watch.
01:56:24Have you worked with her?
01:56:25Yes, yeah, we've worked together a few times and will do many times in the future.
01:56:32And members of the orchestra now, deservedly getting to their feet for their performance.
