00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're breaking down everything we know so that you know what
00:14you need to know before playing Game Science's Black Myth, Wukong.

00:33about our latest videos.
00:37Not a soul's like.
00:53Let's get something out of the way immediately.
00:55No, Black Myth Wukong is not another soul's like, and honestly, thank god.
01:03While the game will still feature many of the staples now familiar with the genre, i.e.
01:08bonfires, stamina bars, health flasks, or in this case, gourds, that's where most of
01:13the similarities end.
01:14The game is honestly more akin to Modern God of War than to Dark Souls proper.
01:19The game will, however, still offer those looking for a soul's like challenge plenty
01:24to live, die, and repeat for, but don't expect there to be the same repercussions upon death.
01:30Although you will still lose Will, this game's version of souls, if knocked out during combat,
01:36if you manage to collect enough and fill the bar to create a spark, which acts as skill
01:41points, it's yours even after death.
01:51Black Myth Wukong is based on one of the most popular and highly revered novels in
02:03Chinese history, Journey to the West, written in the 16th century.
02:08The novel has inspired countless other works of fiction, including more direct video game
02:13adaptations such as Ninja Theory's 2010 action-adventure game, Enslaved Odyssey to the West.
02:19It tells the tale of Sun Wukong, and the magical abilities and skills he learns as
02:24he travels searching for the secrets to immortality.
02:27Throughout the journey, Wukong is shown as brash and arrogant, which eventually leads
02:32him to clash with the heavens and eventually rebel against the gods themselves, before
02:37being beaten, humbled, and forced to reflect on his actions.
02:41While it's unlikely the game will follow this narrative even remotely, it does set up an
02:46exciting premise, and the world for players to explore and battle numerous foes as they
02:51grow into the strongest being on Earth, the Monkey King, beautifully unreal.
03:12Developer GameScience unveiled Black Myth Wukong to the world in August 2020, with a
03:17stunningly gorgeous reveal trailer that went on to blow up across social media.
03:22Since then, the developer has consistently pulled back the curtain on the game, revealing
03:26more and more gorgeous environments, animations, and character designs.
03:31In 2021, GameScience announced they were shifting the game over to Unreal Engine 5, and the
03:36results are somehow even more impressive.
03:39With interactive snowy mountain passes, lush, vibrant forests, and some incredible water
03:44effects, the game continues to impress, and it's aiming to accomplish all this incredible
03:49detail alongside 4K 60FPS presentation, as well as ray tracing and all the bells and
03:56whistles possible through Epic's increasingly powerful game engine.
04:11Crafty Crafting In addition to a skill tree, players will
04:15also be able to craft and equip armor sets that will grant the player special buffs and
04:19attributes depending on how many pieces of a specific set they have equipped.
04:25Crafting materials can be found within the environment, as well as from defeating enemies
04:29and bosses, and these armor pieces can even be upgraded as the game progresses.
04:34The armor system will be broken down into four categories, leg and chest, gauntlets,
04:40and helms, which players can mix and match to suit their playstyle or just their favorite
04:44look.
04:46Crafting is also an important part of potion creation.
04:49Potions can be used not only for health regeneration, but also to grant Wukong certain buffs that
04:55such as elemental resistance.
04:58Off the Beaten Path
05:06Although Black Myth Wukong appears to share quite a lot of DNA with the Souls series,
05:10it skews closer to the original Dark Souls games than FromSoft's recent Elden Ring.
05:15While players will be able to explore various biomes such as the prominently featured forests
05:20and snowy mountains, the game will guide players on a relatively linear path with numerous
05:24larger areas sprinkled in for the player to explore.
05:28Even though the game will be mostly guiding the player from one area to the next, there
05:32will be hidden paths and secrets hidden within the world for players to discover, including
05:37entirely missable bosses and areas full of valuable crafting resources.
05:42Players will also encounter NPCs and be able to take on side quests later in the game as
05:47the world slowly begins to open throughout the story.
05:57Transforming Skills
06:06Much like the novel that inspired it, Wukong's transformation abilities will aid him in combat.
06:11With the footage and gameplay GameScience has released, players have seen a few of the
06:16possible transformations Wukong will have available in his arsenal which will grant
06:20him special abilities and be especially useful against the mini-yaukai the Monkey King will
06:25encounter.
06:26Some of these bosses will grant Wukong new transformations which imbue him with the powers
06:31of the boss he just defeated.
06:33These transformations have their own dedicated health bar, and how long you can maintain
06:37the transformation sometimes depends on how much damage you take while others have a timer.
06:43These abilities are on a cooldown meter much like Monkey's other powers, but could end
06:48up being crucial to save you from death at the last second while also giving you the
06:52boost in power you need to come out on top.
07:00Speed is King
07:08Another vast departure from the Souls-like formula, Black Myth Wukong completely drops
07:13the traditional block and parry system in favor of faster combat focused on dodging
07:18rather than the slow, methodical combat of the genre.
07:22Think Bloodborne meets Devil May Cry.
07:24Likewise, this focus on dodging rather than parrying opens new possibilities for players
07:29to experiment with the game's many special attacks and abilities.
07:33That's not to say there isn't a block button at all however.
07:36Players will be able to hold down the trigger button and Wukong will spin his staff to block
07:40incoming projectiles.
07:43Just don't expect this move to save you in a pinch when a boss is coming at you full-speed.
07:47Wukong is a very agile fighter, but spamming the dodge button will result in a lengthy
07:52cooldown as players can only use the mechanic three times in quick succession before their
07:57stamina runs out.
08:05Combo Focusing
08:12Keeping in the tradition of an action RPG, Wukong's attacks will build towards his combo
08:17meter which will in turn allow him access to new and more powerful abilities from one
08:22of his three different stance forms which players are free to switch between at their
08:27own discretion.
08:28The first form is the Smash form, which rewards aggressive players who get up close and personal
08:33during encounters.
08:35The second is the Pillar form, which grows in strength the more the player essentially
08:39taunts their enemy.
08:41This form allows Wukong to climb to the top of his staff and the longer he remains there
08:45and avoids attack, the larger his staff grows, allowing him to unleash a devastating blow.
08:52The final form is the Thrust form, which can only be acquired after reaching level 20 and
08:58will allow players to deal heavy thrust attacks that can knock back even the biggest and baddest
09:03of bosses.
09:12Boss Rush
09:24The bosses of Black Myth Wukong have made up some of the best parts of the gameplay
09:28footage we've seen, and according to reports from those who have had hands-on time with
09:32the title, the game is absolutely stacked with them.
09:36While the odd basic enemy will still be able to give players a challenge, the bosses are
09:41where game science will separate the Monkey Kings from the Monkey Princes.
09:46It's reported the final game will have 160 different enemy types and 80 full boss encounters.
09:53All the bosses we've seen are visually distinct and come with their own moves and attacks
09:58and some will even have unique personalities.
10:01Players will need to learn and adapt on the fly if they want to emerge victorious.
10:05Some bosses will also have numerous phases which can only be triggered if the player
10:10either whittles down their health or defeats them within a certain time limit.
10:25Learning the Basics
10:32Game Science recently revealed the long-awaited release date for Black Myth Wukong will finally
10:37be on August 20th, 2024 alongside numerous editions of the game both physical and digital
10:43and will be available on PS5 and PC.
10:47While there is currently an Xbox Series X and S version planned, there has been no confirmed
10:52release date for this edition of the game at the time of writing.
10:55Those who pre-order Black Myth Wukong will receive a number of additional pieces of content
11:00although most of it can be acquired during normal gameplay.
11:03Those who prefer physical copies of the game will be disappointed they will only include
11:07a downloadable code for the game instead of a disc, although Game Science is reportedly
11:12looking for solutions for future physical copies.
11:15There is also a Deluxe Edition and a Collector's Edition, the latter of which comes with a
11:20fully detailed statue of the Monkey King himself.
