00:00This summer has felt a little short of ideal when it comes to sunshine but now
00:06the Sun is well and truly out in fact I've actually come into the woods to get
00:10a bit of shade it's so hot so what can we do to cool down well I can't think of
00:15a better way to do it than ice cream and today I'm heading to Calendios Gelato
00:20in Kentish Town it's been dubbed the best ice cream in the capital so much so
00:26that it was recently ranked as the number one scoop spot in London by
00:30timeout so let's go and see what this ice cream is all about
00:40we're in Kentish Town in North London we specifically came to this area because
00:47so Maclean's family the other half of the business who are the Calendios
00:53they came over from Naples in Italy in the 1800s the earliest census we
00:59find them on is 1890 we know that we're here a little bit before that and they
01:04set up as gelato makers and confectioners in Clerkenwell so when we
01:09knew we wanted to start the parlour up again they traded up to about 1950 when
01:16we knew they wanted to we wanted to start the sort of family history again
01:20as it were and we decided to draw a bit of an egg around anywhere that was
01:26within the area and we did a little bit of research and really liked Kentish
01:30Town's vibe so you wouldn't be allowed to use them nowadays but no so Mick and
01:40I both trained in Italy and in the UK always with Italian chefs we've kept
01:45everything very traditional with what we do and you'll see I think most Italians
01:49that come in realize the feel of the place is quite typically Italian I think
01:54we've kept the Kentish Town vibe with the street art and whatnot we use shout
02:00out to Dominique who's our artist she's another North London lass. Do you have
02:05any favourite flavours yourself? I personally love the you've got the
02:10Eton Mess there I love the Eton Mess and I tend to be a bit you know sweeter
02:14chocolatey we do a really great Rolo as well which is like chocolate caramel
02:19or whatnot yeah so we source from wherever we think is going to give us
02:22the best product so for example our pistachio we import directly from the
02:26farmer in Sicily but for us people are coming here for the gelato it's the main
02:31event for us so yeah it's it's going from strength to strength from us here
02:36in in in North London and you know we love the fact that we're residential
02:40we've got a lot of regulars but at the same time tourism is starting to really
02:45pick up in London and we're seeing a little bit of that effect as well so so
02:49yeah generally really positive for us and we love we love being in Kentish
02:53Town it's a great location for us
