00:00The monument of Benavidez, of course, is because he was the founder of the university.
00:18So why are there four lions? Why are there eight elephants?
00:22First, what do those animals symbolize?
00:26If we look at the different books, the elephant and the lion signify stability, loyalty, strength.

00:41He was the first academic institution and the oldest academic institution,
00:48not only in the Philippines, but also in the whole of Asia.
00:53The four lions symbolize the Dominican institution as the U.S.T.A.
01:01under the Dominicans, the emblem of Manila as it is in the city of Manila,
01:07the seal of Holy See as it is a pontifical,
01:11and the coat of arms of Spain as it is also considered a royal university.
01:17The Benavidez statue was originally placed in Intramuros and was built in 1891.
01:29After the war, it was transferred to our present institution.
01:35If you look at the Benavidez statue, you will see bullet shots in the head and neck
01:44that show that it was transferred from the original location to the new location of the university.
01:56Although, it cannot be said that it is only new because before the war,
02:03there were two universities of Santo Tomas, one in Intramuros and one here in Sampagos.
