Mizu Yokan Tasty Thing in Japan

00:00Hey guys, welcome to another video from our Food and Eating in Japan playlist.
00:04So this week we were given this present which was actually very nicely gift wrapped on the
00:09outside and on the inside.
00:10So we've removed all the wrapping so that we can show you just the box and the contents.
00:18So this is yorkan and what we have there is mizu yorkan.
00:23So yorkan is made with red bean and sugar and something else and the mizu version is
00:31more wet.
00:32It's a sort of a softer, wetter version of a yorkan.
00:37So interesting container isn't it?
00:39That's what sort of triggered the video, I was like oh this is different because sometimes
00:44it's just wrapped in plastic, there's all sorts of different ways that it comes.
00:47So at this particular type, at one end it has this removable plastic so you peel it
00:52off and then you turn it upside down and at the other end there's a couple little plugs
01:00when you squeeze them together that lets air in there and that allows the thing to move
01:07out of the container.
01:08So you just pop them together, that just lets a little bit of air in there, just enough
01:13so that when you pick it up, it sort of allows it to slide out the bottom.
01:24There it is.
01:27So it's fairly typical of the red bean type desserts, it's sort of a dessert, it's sort
01:34of a, not a pudding but it's a snack, it's supposed to be a snack food and it's fairly
01:42typical of the red bean snack foods, it's fairly mild taste, it is tasty, it's had sugar
01:47added so it's slightly sweet.
01:51So if you like red bean, the other versions of red bean, there's lots of different ways
01:56the red bean are processed and presented and eaten, so if you enjoy the red bean you'd
02:01probably enjoy this too.
02:04So it's sort of a mild taste, very soft and usually it's cut into slices, not big slabs
02:14like that, usually a more elegant little slice, on a more elegant little plate is usually
02:21how it's served, not usually like a big slab like that on a big plate, that was purely
02:28for demonstration purposes.
