On the shores of Lampedusa, Italy's southernmost island, host Jamie Owen discovered a boat washed up on the rocks.

According to Luca Marelli from a non-governmental rescue organization, the boat had carried 30 migrants.

Many people who try to reach Europe have to be plucked from the sea when their boat capsizes or sinks. #riseofthefarright

00:00We found this boat washed up on the rocks on Lampedusa.
00:05Most migrants make the crossing in terrible conditions on dangerous seas
00:10in overcrowded wooden or inflatable boats.
00:14If just one of the tubes of the rubber boat starts leaking,
00:19then it deflates and then you find yourself in the water, basically,
00:23because the rubber boat deflates and you're there.
00:26And the other risk is the bottom of the rubber boat breaking up
00:30and all the people finishing into the water.
00:35This boat was spotted by one of our aircraft, Seaboard, two days ago.
00:40It had around 30 people on board.
00:43There were 30 people on board this boat?
00:45Yeah, exactly. So you can imagine, 30 people on this small boat,
00:48it's clearly a distress case, so that's why when we spotted the boat
00:52we immediately alerted authorities because it's a distress case at sea
00:56and needs to be rescued as soon as possible.
00:59Then in the area there was also our ship, Aurora,
01:03which was there to assist eventually boats in distress that were there.
01:09So we also contacted Aurora that arrived on scene.
01:13We distributed life jackets to the people that were on board
01:16because you have to imagine that people on that boat didn't have life jackets,
01:19they didn't have food, they didn't have water,
01:21so as soon as we arrived on scene we distributed these to the people on board
01:26and then we waited with them until the Italian Coast Guard arrived
01:30and rescued the people and brought them here to Lampedusa to disembark.
