Trump Says Taiwan Should Pay the U.S. For Its Defense, Claiming It 'Doesn't Give Us Anything'

  • last month
Donald Trump said he thinks Taiwan should pay the U.S. for its defense, claiming that Taiwan "doesn't give us anything." Trump appeared to link this to Taiwan's semiconductor industry, saying Taiwan took "about 100%" of America's chip business with companies like TSMC. TSMC is the world's largest chipmaker and produces chips for major U.S. tech companies like Apple and Nvidia. The U.S. was once a major chip manufacturer but Taiwan now produces about 66% of the world's most advanced chips. Shares of TSMC fell 2% on the Taiwan stock exchange following Trump's comments.
