Permanent flood defences are to be installed to protect homes and businesses in Ironbridge Gorge.

00:00For the last few years the community down here in Ironridge Gorge has been at the mercy of the
00:04River Severn with more frequent and more severe flooding. The temporary barriers along the
00:09wharfage do a fantastic job of protecting those businesses and homes along the wharfage but so
00:14many properties are left undefended from the flooding that we've experienced recently.
00:19Since the major flooding in 2020 we've been lobbying government for more investment to
00:23help protect all those other properties. Thankfully we've now been awarded 1.2 million
00:28pounds and that will help protect around 40 properties. Now whilst this isn't an
00:32insubstantial amount of money we know that it's not quite enough to fully protect all
00:36of the properties at risk of flooding. So we're working with the Environment Agency
00:39to look at their flood modelling data, looking at all of our own historical records and also
00:44talking to those communities that are most affected by flooding so that we can get the
00:48best value out of this funding and have the most impact. We'll also be working with the
00:52new government to ensure we get more investment to address flooding across the whole of Telford
00:56and Reikin as we continue to protect, care and invest to create a better borough.
