00:00England who kick off and in just a matter of seconds all the waiting will be over
00:05and the action will be underway for England and for the Republic of Ireland
00:10in this 1990 World Cup
00:17England setting out to settle that score of two years ago in Stuttgart when the
00:22Republic won by Reyhavn's goal to nil
00:26and England are away
00:29and Ireland are in possession and it's the Manhattan again with Casperino
00:34chasing, Butcher closing quickly and the ball back with Peter Shilton
00:41Victory of course for England tonight would be an ample repayment of that
00:45score and put England firmly on the path to the second phase
00:50another defeat for England tonight for example and then a match that follows
00:55against Holland, well England's hopes would again be bleak
01:00remember two from each group go through plus the best four who finish third
01:06Holland and Egypt making up this group
01:12so victory must be the first objective avoiding defeat must be the next one
01:19Gascoigne with the free kick for England
01:25it long towards Butcher who'd gone up there but McCarthy made it well
01:30for the Republic of Ireland knocked on there by Paul McGrath playing in the
01:33midfield
01:35Pearce
01:38Lineker up front and Waddle as well, Sheedy couldn't gather
01:43it's with Waddle again
01:46there was quite a buzz around the England camp
01:50today that Chris Waddle, that's Gary Stevens, Chris Waddle might
01:54lose his place and that Steve McMahon might come in to
01:57give a real strong competitive edge to the midfield and maybe release Gascoigne
02:01a little more at the same time but Bobby Robson has
02:04resisted that temptation if that's what it was
02:08it's a throw to the Republic of Ireland Steve Staunton will take it
02:15no Mick McCarthy who's got a really good respectable long throw
02:22looking for the head of Casperino, Aldridge, Paul McGrath there as well for
02:26the Republic of Ireland Andy Townsend on the edge of the box
02:28Ray Houghton hovering as well there's that long long throw
02:32coming in towards Shilton, Townsend knocks it back in again but the whistle had gone
02:37what a great throw that was Ron very much so right into the heart of
02:41the goal mouth Peter Shilton under intense pressure and it's interesting to
02:45me because this is a one-off match isn't it there's not going to be another game
02:47like this in the tournament it's basically whatever look at this
02:51there's going to be plenty of this this afternoon
02:53long throw Casperino challenging all the people filling in the little areas
03:01England's free kick Gascoigne on the far side there
03:08Butcher's hovering in the box Gascoigne in there as Gascoigne then takes this
03:12free kick floated in just wide by Robson
03:17and the other Robson gives a wry smile there
03:20an opening goal for England in this early stage would have been such a
03:25blessing a good delivery from Gascoigne
03:28Staunton with the throw
03:39played in towards Leningrad it's a goal for England surely
03:44Gary Lineker
03:50Waddle's pass was important as well the start England wanted
03:55and Lineker the World Cup goal man does it again
04:01Ron Atkinson yeah there's magnificent ball here from Waddle he's picked him
04:04he's not just thrown that in he's picked him
04:06you would have to ask questions about the two defenders and maybe the goalkeeper
04:10ball watching full marks to Lineker brave as a lion
04:13he's got in as you say just the start they wanted and that
04:17detones for many of those misses he had he had a nightmare on that particular
04:21day in Stuttgart but he's put the record straight very very
04:24quickly yeah there's a time though you think
04:27McCarthy may just have got ahead of him but Lineker's lightning in that
04:30situation
04:34terrific strike by Lineker who course finished top scorer
04:38in the World Cup in Mexico with six
04:44eight minutes of the game had gone when Lineker made his strike
04:50Butcher
04:53McGrath Staunton Beardsley hustling him so's Waddle who hit a marvelous
05:00ball in for Lineker
05:09Gary Stevens
05:14with the throw
05:20Gascoigne
05:23Walker only half getting it away Cascarino's in there with a header
05:28and now Waddle and Gascoigne getting in each other's way
05:33and Waddle in the end strangling the ball into touch when really there was
05:39the opportunity of getting it away Houghton now to McGrath flicked in by
05:43Sheedy
05:47and just wide from Sheedy
05:51the Irish felt there was an infringement there they went chasing
05:54after the West German referee for a moment but England were
05:57tottering just for a moment there yes you've just seen two examples there
06:01first by Waddle and then by Des Walker of all people
06:04Ireland's throw they're waiting for Mick McCarthy
06:07he's coming up in fact to receive the ball
06:11Morris Houghton on the far side look for a good cross and we'll look for
06:16the head of Cascarino they had a good ball there for Morris
06:21they're a goal behind but they're looking bright
06:24now McGrath with a header Shilton good heavens I thought for a moment he'd
06:30made a meal of that one yes lovely little build-up play on the
06:34right-hand side wasn't it with Houghton McCarthy and Aldridge
06:38involved I think if you look here when he loves this I think Paul could have
06:41let this come back onto his chest and maybe
06:44we've seen him in volley and it's up to Barnes
06:47you know that's him at his peak in full flow it's up to Barnes and wants to try
06:51and go looking and finding space Pierce taking a short free kick
06:56Robson trying to yes makes a little break here
06:59the cross by Pierce Lineker's there again but this time it's over
07:05came off an Irish defender to give England the corner
07:12so Lineker predator waiting there once more
07:18Andy Townsend back number three Steve Staunton
07:21Terry Butcher's up at the near post maybe the little flick on
07:25Beardsley supplying the cross Gascoyne waited for it to drop and Aldridge
07:31wasn't prepared to allow that to happen but there's Gascoyne this time into
07:35touch
07:42so far so good for England leading by a goal to nil but such a long way yet to go
07:48and at this level the concentration has to remain
07:52so high for every second of the 90 minutes
08:02haven't really created anything apart from pressure situations long throws and
08:06their free kicks and things like that but nothing
08:08I think Shilton's had maybe one troublesome moment the header from
08:11McGrath maybe the long throw at the start
08:14England for their part have battled hard haven't really played
08:17with any control of the game which once again is understandable
08:21I would expect England now to show their mettle they'll have the win behind
08:24them hopefully they'll have a lead behind
08:26them and every advantage then now they've got to show or they will show
08:31second half their ability to play there's enough
08:34players with good control in the side that sort of thing won't be much use to
08:37them second half just welling it up in the air
08:40well that's the halftime whistle England leading by a goal to nil Gary
08:44Lineker's after nine minutes after some fine work
08:49by Chris Waller and the wind now behind them when they come out for the second
08:53half here in Calgary then it's England won
08:56the Republic of Ireland nil now let me tell you it's now pouring with
09:01rain here there's lightning flashing all around the
09:04Mediterranean and we're away in the second half up
09:08goes Aldridge
09:11and Sheedy trying to get in it was a last ditch clearance though by Gary
09:15Stephens
09:18Houghton started with a certain amount of venom in this second half of the
09:21Republic of Ireland but it's a goal kick
09:26well that's what it's like in Calgary at the moment
09:29tremendous storm is brewing and now the rain beginning to flood down
09:38and that comes on very good authority I'm told
09:42uh
09:46Sheedy with a throw for the Republic of Ireland Townsend
09:50Staunton Walker getting it away but only as far as McGrath long shot by McGrath
09:56just over the top
10:00oh we're playing a dangerous game Ron Atkinson
10:03you don't seem to be out as you say to get the ball out of her own half for any
10:06length of time and the Irish again looking the livelier of the two sides
10:11very much so great effort this from Paul McGrath but you notice there's not an
10:15England player won't closing at the last minute no
10:17we're nobody really contesting the ball
10:23but here's Pierce
10:31McGrath's header
10:33Barnes
10:37Pierce a long one that could have been difficult in fact it was a little
10:41difficult for Bonner
10:45substitution is about to be made yeah Alan McLaughlin yes
10:49of Swindon Town
10:58Morris Setters giving the instructions the pleasure of the result you're quite
11:03right Graham and uh as we were saying results are everything and at the moment
11:07it's going England's way by that slender margin of one to nil
11:15Cascarino battling with Butcher Sheedy playing it in again McMahon sitting in
11:21their team gets it away Sheedy
11:241-1
11:27given away I think by McMahon but Sheedy rattled that one in there with that famous
11:35left foot of his to make it 1-1 and England could have a real problem now
11:43Ron Atkinson yes well it was you said before it was coming
11:48we've invited pressure upon ourselves Sheedy doesn't quite show McMahon's
11:53mistakes not the first time an English defender's made a mistake
11:57get caught in possession around the edge of the box great strike from Sheedy
12:00great great left foot he's got but I think we I think we brought that
12:04upon ourselves we've sat and invited pressure we've invited the Irish to come
12:08and attack us they don't need too many second helpings
12:13Gascoigne being told both by the referee and his teammates to calm down it's a
12:17free kick to England the Irish are jubilant now and England
12:22might have a problem unless they can do something at this end of the field
12:25they are just holding it up for Butcher to get into that penalty area
12:281-1 the score Gascoigne with the free kick floated towards Terry Butcher on
12:33the far side just wide
12:41Shelton continues to exercise but it was Bonner who had the worry
12:45at the other end
12:48Gascoigne's free kick inch perfect actually for Butcher on that far side
12:56but why did the Irish goal great situation that wasn't a great
13:01situation lovely curling ball there again from Gascoigne
13:04whether whether it's the enthusiasm and never say die spirit of a Steve Ball
13:12but he hasn't got too many options I mean if if he
13:15if he does bring Bull on he's basically got to take one of the midfield players
13:18off maybe McMahon again
13:22Gascoigne, Gascoigne no foul comes to Barnes
13:28little chip by him to the far side towards Lineker
13:32knocked back again McMahon trying to play it in once more
13:35Robson was in there Barnes with a shot oh my goodness it was so close
13:41the flying leap by Lineker but not quite the connection that England wanted
13:51well there was more than a half chance here as
13:54Barnes hit that one in
13:57on the bench there as he talks to Peter Beardsley and crosses his legs in anger
14:01and just frustration as well
14:06and we're heading towards the first drawn game in this 1990 World Cup
14:11as we have just a few seconds left
14:19and Mick McCarthy throws the ball into the England bench
14:25and Ireland have come away with a draw after England had taken the lead with
14:29Gary Lineker, Jack Charlton and Bobby Robson
14:32shake hands there's still a lot of work for both
14:36these nations to do in this group Jack Charlton must be
14:42the happier of the two coming back from behind and looks it's
14:45Bobby Robson must be the more disappointed
14:48Ron Atkinson yes I think he's every right to he signalled his intent with
14:52the side he picked and the players have got to hold their
14:55hands up and take responsibility for that
14:57there was no purpose about them he didn't get the impression they had the
15:00belief my belief is they had 11 better players
15:03on the field on paper than than Ireland but that hasn't worked out we
15:07haven't we haven't we haven't done ourselves justice the Irish have been
15:10brilliant they've come here they've got a goal
15:13down they've stuck at the task for Marks and they've had the spirit to
15:17play you know the manager will obviously take
15:21flat tomorrow and I think he I don't think he's entitled to on that I
15:24think his players are going to take the responsibility
