00:00Summer's always busiest time for RSPCA officers. We're always braced for an influx of calls.
00:06There's lots of reasons for this. One is just because we have better weather,
00:10so I think there's probably less places for cruelty to hide. People who are outside,
00:14they might be seeing more instances of cruelty and animal neglect in general and report this to us.
00:21Unfortunately, there are sometimes some more sinister reasons as well. We know that,
00:26unfortunately, we have had reports across the board where people go away on holiday,
00:31which is obviously more common in the summer, and are leaving their animals behind,
00:34they're abandoning animals, as perhaps some of those costs of things like boarding
00:40of their pet come to light. This is something that we're even more concerned about this year
00:46on the back of the pandemic a few years ago, where we saw a real boom in animal ownership,
00:53coupled with the cost of living crisis, where some people had maybe got an animal where they
00:57were not necessarily ready for that massive commitment. We're worried that some of those
01:01costs bite. In some of the more extreme cases, people might take drastic measures.
01:07Fortunately, we know most people are brilliant animal owners. Kent is a county full of animal
01:12lovers, and that is the important thing to remember, but it is going to be a tough,
01:17tough summer season ahead for the RSPCA.
