00:00Hi, this is the ɔɪ sound as in the words point, boy and voice.
00:14ɔɪ is a diphthong sound which means it's a combination of two vowel sounds that are
00:22produced within the same syllable.
00:25The ɔɪ sound is a combination of the ɔ and the ɪ.
00:35Like vowels the diphthongs are made through the mouth and are voiced, which means that
00:39you vibrate your vocal cords to make the sound.
00:43But unlike vowels or consonants, when you pronounce a diphthong sound your mouth will
00:48change position and shape as you say the sound, because they are a combination of two vowel
00:55sounds.
00:56So as you say the ɔɪ vowel sound your mouth will start on the position of ɔ and finish
01:04on the position of ɪ or ɪ.
01:07So the main difference here is that we are going from the rounded ɔ to the unrounded
01:14ɪ, ɔɪ, ɔɪ, ɔɪ.
01:24One of the most difficult things about learning English is the spelling.
01:29This is because spelling is often not phonetic, especially with the vowels and diphthongs.
01:34So you will find the ɔɪ sound spelled in many different ways, but the most common ways
01:41are with the letters OI or OY, as in the words join, oil, choice and enjoy.
02:04The ɔɪ sound is not very common, but there are a couple more examples that you should
02:09know about.
02:11They are avoid and employee.
02:23So that's it for the ɔɪ sound.
02:28We've also made videos on each of the phonetic sounds, which you can see by clicking on these
02:34links.
02:36We've also made videos on the groups of sounds, vowels, diphthongs, consonant pairs
02:42and single consonants, as well as a video explaining the overall phonetic chart.
