00:00:00It's 0-0 at halftime here in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin in the Eurofinal between Spain and
00:00:13England.
00:00:14Chances at a premium.
00:00:15This, the only one on target from England, right on the stroke of halftime, a half chance
00:00:19for Phil Foden.
00:00:21No more than that.
00:00:22Roy, we can feel the tension.
00:00:23What's your assessment of the break?
00:00:24Yeah, there's plenty of tension.
00:00:25Brilliant players on the pitch, but showing a bit of lack of quality, particularly in
00:00:29the final third, but that's, players know what's at stake, so there's a bit of nervousness
00:00:33there.
00:00:34England are, they're hanging in there.
00:00:35What we've seen throughout the tournament, again, we mentioned before the game, they
00:00:38just have to do a bit more in possession.
00:00:40Kane needs to be a bit sharper, but defensively I think England do well.
00:00:43They're forced for a while in dealing with the crosses, and as we've seen throughout
00:00:46the tournament, Garrett knows it just needs one moment or somebody off the bench.
00:00:50What about Luke Shaw then, coming in for his first start since you saw him play a league
00:00:53game in February, what would your assessment be of how well he's played?
00:00:57I think defensively he'll be really happy, obviously against Jamal, who's been the player
00:01:00of the tournament without a shadow of a doubt, and he's probably had one of the quietest
00:01:04his first half so far.
00:01:05I mean, England have been poor in possession, but they've been poor throughout the tournament
00:01:09in possession.
00:01:10It's been typical of how we've been playing, but we are staying in the game, and in a 1v1
00:01:14situation, Shaw's been strong.
00:01:16We know actually he's become a really good defender.
00:01:18When he was younger, you would question that a little bit, but he actually has got a lot
00:01:21of power.
00:01:22He's good in the air, he can play against players one on one, and this one he tooks in
00:01:25really well, which is a great position for the opposite left back.
00:01:30This one he gets forward, I mean, this is when he is at his best, and Manchester United
00:01:34and England have missed him in this tournament at his best.
00:01:36I think what we saw there as well with one of those is the cross-field pass, if we could
00:01:40get that quicker to Saka, I think we could cause even more problems for him.
00:01:44But you can see him, like Dico said at the start, he's got on top of him very early as
00:01:49a young player, and he's really staying on top of him.
00:01:51Yeah, but fatigue will be a problem for Shaw, again, he's not played for a number of months
00:01:54and they're defending a lot, so you have to keep an eye on that.
00:01:57Is the elephant in the room, I'm afraid, again, Harry Kane.
00:01:59He's on a yellow card now because he was stretching for it, and was clearly a yellow card.
00:02:04What sort of decision does Gareth Southgate have to make, and at what stage does he make
00:02:08that?
00:02:09Look, it's a struggle for Harry Kane.
00:02:10We look like a team that's going to have a counter-attacking strategy, but without a
00:02:13counter-attack on the pitch.
00:02:15Maybe Saka can on that right-hand side, but if you had Watkins up front, if you had maybe
00:02:19Gordon or Palmer on the other side, you'd have the ability to be able to break from
00:02:22deep positions, and we haven't got that at the moment.
00:02:24I don't think Spain are going to change, they're going to keep on pushing us back, so I think
00:02:27at some point, maybe 10, 15 minutes in, we may see Watkins come on for Kane.
00:02:31We've seen a couple of occasions where we've gone long, and there's not enough support
00:02:35around, and the ball's coming straight back.
00:02:38I'd like to see us, really, if we're going to do that, I'd like to see people try and
00:02:41get up and support, because I do believe if we can get that going, we will start getting
00:02:45them on the back foot, because I think it's their centre-halves in that space, the centre-halves,
00:02:49the left-back, is where we can cause them problems.
00:02:51In defensive games, some of the service up to him hasn't been great, but a few that he
00:02:54has got hold of, it's not been good enough.
00:02:57It's a difficult decision when he's your captain, when he's your talisman, isn't it?
00:03:00He came off in the 80th minute against the Dutch.
00:03:02Yeah, but if Garratt don't throw the torn, but Garrett won't be panicking, he'll be staying
00:03:04calm and probably waiting about 15 or 20 minutes to go before he makes that change.
00:03:08Garrett will be calm about that.
00:03:09Do you think England got a little bit calmer in possession, it was very frantic the first
00:03:1315, 20, do you think to any extent they calmed down a little bit with the ball?
00:03:16A little bit, a little bit, but do you remember those little bouncy balls you used to have
00:03:20as a kid that used to pop up, it was like that for us in the first 15, 20 minutes, we
00:03:24were really nervous on the ball, but it's a big occasion, and look, we've been here
00:03:27before, three quarters of that team have played in this match before, but it's still a lot
00:03:31and Spain we know are technically excellent.
00:03:33The problem is when you chase the ball, sorry, you chase the ball that so much when you do
00:03:37get to it, you're so tired, you're looking at options, the players are having a breather
00:03:40just again at the wrong time, that's why it's so tough for them.
00:03:43You've seen on some occasions we've got the ball and we're running, I saw Jude on this
00:03:46side, we've had four players coming across him, there's not enough support for him, we
00:03:50need to, once we do get it, we need people showing, we need people to show pass, pop
00:03:54it off, get out maybe the other side and have a go down the other side.
00:03:58And they'll know that at half-time England will be kicking towards their fans, towards
00:04:02us in this second half, before that a last chance to win our competition, and we've added
00:04:07an extra £10,000 to the prize fund with the current total now over £68,000.
00:04:14Do you want to score loads of tax-free cash thanks to Shaw, Dubman and Lynx?
00:04:18One of you will bank a huge £30,000, plus for every goal scored during the tournament
00:04:23we're adding £250 to the prize pot.
00:04:26More goals means more cash, and that prize is now over £50,000.

00:04:59Good luck!
00:05:13More live international football on Tuesday.
00:05:15England's Lionesses travel to Sweden for a key Euro 2025 qualifier.
00:05:19They need a draw to avoid the playoffs and qualify automatically.
00:05:235.30 ITV1 and STV, and in September we're delighted to be back with England's men as
00:05:29they start their Nations League campaign in Dublin.
00:05:32Will they go to Dublin as European champions?
00:05:35That's the big question.
00:05:37Spain are making a change.
00:05:38I'll get Sam to talk us through that in a second.
00:05:42Gary, England are obviously a counter-attacking team, so the question is, who and when?
00:05:45Because he's got a lot of options off the bench.
00:05:47The best counter-attacking players we've got that you could think he would bring on
00:05:50would be Watkins, obviously a centre-forward.
00:05:52And probably on the left-hand side, I would say Gordon would be the one that you think
00:05:55about who's got the most pace, who can get from back to front quickly.
00:05:58Ian, what do you think?
00:05:59No, I'm probably going to leave it for another 15 minutes before you do that, because
00:06:03he knows that he's got the capability of bringing those guys on.
00:06:06But I think that we haven't done enough.
00:06:09I think that these players can still do something right if we can get hold of the ball.
00:06:12If we can get hold of the ball.
00:06:13Yeah, just a bit more quality.
00:06:14But it's been tough going for them, I tell you.
00:06:16They've been slowing the game down for free kicks and goal kicks.
00:06:19It's tough going for them out there, but they just need that bit more quality in possession,
00:06:22which is very difficult when you're chasing it.
00:06:24And up till now, Gary, throughout the championship, to be fair,
00:06:27I don't want to tempt fate from an England point of view,
00:06:29they've defended well, haven't they?
00:06:31This is a typical performance.
00:06:32You can't just play like we have for three and a half weeks
00:06:34and expect that we're going to play wonderful football today.
00:06:36It was never going to happen.
00:06:38I was thinking we was going to go.
00:06:40But what you would say is that these lads,
00:06:41they've got the most talented players out on the pitch
00:06:43that we've got in those front six positions.
00:06:45And they're defending really, really well, as you say.
00:06:47This game is panning out exactly the way we thought it would be.
00:06:49And again, it'll be just one moment.
00:06:51No doubt about it.
00:06:52Our, of course, options off the bench.
00:06:54Right.
00:06:55Well, there is a change.
00:06:56Martin Zubemendi is coming on.
00:06:58It'll be very interesting to see who is coming for.
00:07:00He's coming off for Rodri.
00:07:02Wow.
00:07:03If I were an England player, quickly you'd be going, wow, Rodri's on Peckinsville Roost.
00:07:07Let's talk about England getting luck in certain situations.
00:07:09That is another slice of luck there.
00:07:11He's the most important midfield player in the world at this moment in time.
00:07:14And he's just gone off the pitch.
00:07:15It is a big stroke of luck.
00:07:16He has to be properly injured to be off the pitch.
00:07:17Wow.
00:07:18Injured just before halftime.
00:07:19Luiz de la Fuente going through his instructions to Zubemendi
00:07:22as we go back to Lee Dixon, Ali McCoys and Sam Atterface.
00:07:26Well, when it dawned on us about a minute and a half ago
00:07:29that Rodri was not going to emerge for the second period,
00:07:34I think exactly what Raiti and the rest of the boys in the studio did.
00:07:38Wow.
00:07:39Yeah, absolutely.
00:07:40Whenever you want to see the back of someone, it's him.
00:07:43And that record goes with him now he's gone off the pitch, obviously.
00:07:47One that defeated 80 games for club and country.
00:07:51Martin Zubemendi of Real Sociedad, 25 years of age, his 10th cap tonight.
00:07:56He's a chess-playing midfielder who is one of the best in Spain in his position.
00:08:00He's very good, too, at controlling the tempo.
00:08:03On the game.
00:08:05And he comes up for Rodri at halftime.
00:08:09England and Spain have history.
00:08:11Euro 96.
00:08:13Stuart Pearce's redemption moment.
00:08:16The games between the two in the Nations League six years ago were superb.
00:08:19Seville was one of the standout moments of the first half
00:08:22of Southgate's tenure.
00:08:24Sterling on form, Rashford scoring a breathtaking goal in the first half.
00:08:29But this second half now has just taken a bit of a twist, Ali.
00:08:32With the absence of Rodri.
00:08:33Well, absolutely.
00:08:34You've got to be quite frank about it.
00:08:36If you had one player you wanted not to come out in the second half of Spain,
00:08:41I would suggest Rodri would be top of the list.
00:08:44So it's a break, it's a bonus.
00:08:46It doesn't win you the game.
00:08:50Zubemendi getting on the ball nice and early.
00:08:54England's last visit to this stadium ended in last-minute glory.
00:08:59A 3-2 win over Germany.
00:09:00They came from 2-0 down in that game.
00:09:02And Eric Dier, thumping header.
00:09:04That was eight years ago.
00:09:07John Terry scored a winner here in 2008.
00:09:10Going back further to the fifties.
00:09:13No-one here well.
00:09:14This is Yamal getting to the edge of the box.
00:09:16There's a bit of space for Williams here.
00:09:18And Williams has spotted the space in the corner past Pickford.
00:09:23And put Spain in front.
00:09:26One minute and 13 seconds into the second half.
00:09:31They may have changed the midfield, but they haven't changed the threat.
00:09:35And England find themselves a goal down again.
00:09:39Williams with the strike.
00:09:42And once more England will need to summon those comeback powers again.
00:09:48Well, when we see this again.
00:09:50First time Shaw has just got out of position.
00:09:52Just look at him.
00:09:53He gets caught.
00:09:54The man inside and behind him.
00:09:56And he can't catch up.
00:09:58He nearly fouls him there.
00:09:59He thinks about it.
00:10:00But that pass is a killer pass.
00:10:02And he's in his stride.
00:10:04He doesn't have to do anything.
00:10:05He runs onto it, Williams.
00:10:07And passes it in that far corner.
00:10:09But it's the first time Shaw's been out of position.
00:10:11And that's because he got caught with two players.
00:10:17I've just won a good declaration.
00:10:18I helped him a little bit.
00:10:19I'll take the goal at self-lead.
00:10:21Barry Ulmo makes a fantastic run.
00:10:24It's only a five-yard run forward.
00:10:26He takes Stones with him.
00:10:28He brings Walker in.
00:10:29The ball comes to Williams.
00:10:31And it is an absolutely superb composed, keep-the-shot-down finish.
00:10:37Excellent finish.
00:10:42Well, it's not an unfamiliar situation.
00:10:44England were a goal down to the Netherlands and won.
00:10:47They were a goal down to Switzerland.
00:10:50And on penalties.
00:10:51They're considering the first goal against Slovakia.
00:10:54Comebacks have been their thing.
00:10:57But that's the worst possible start to a second period.
00:11:00Also, a 17-year-old's not supposed to know what full-backs don't like.
00:11:05And they don't like it when you just wander on the inside of them.
00:11:08Because he had a man outside him, Shaw, he just got caught in two mines.
00:11:13And that's all it needs.
00:11:14Once he's that side of you, you can't catch up.
00:11:17I did think about clipping him on the edge of the box.
00:11:20I wish he had done now.
00:11:22Carvajal again.
00:11:23Williams has got a bit of space to motor into.
00:11:26It's a good touch by Omo.
00:11:28And he's twisted and turned and shot beyond the goal.
00:11:32Unfortunately for England, he's missed the target.
00:11:34He's got it in the target.
00:11:35That's a brilliant touch there.
00:11:36Because Walker thinks he's got it.
00:11:38Continues his run.
00:11:39He's a lovely ball on his feet.
00:11:40He takes a great touch with his right foot to take John Stones out of the game.
00:11:43He's opened up.
00:11:45Let's be brutally honest.
00:11:46He snatches at the finish.
00:11:48Thanks for England's point of view, he doesn't meet it cleanly at all.
00:11:52But what a chance that is.
00:11:53He could be over and done right there.
00:11:56And he'll know that as well.
00:11:58England having a little bit of a wobble.
00:12:02Need to regather their composure.
00:12:04Defended so well in that first 45 minutes.
00:12:07It was tight, it was tense.
00:12:10It's kind of taken a grip of it now.
00:12:16And Ali, from your point of view, as a striker and goal scorer,
00:12:25look how calm was Williams when he just put that past it into that far corner.
00:12:29That's exactly what he did.
00:12:30Lee, magnificent.
00:12:31Just a left foot, side foot.
00:12:33He just takes it right across.
00:12:35Uses the pace on the ball and just composes himself.
00:12:38Fires it back across.
00:12:40Beautiful finish.
00:12:41Absolutely beautiful finish.
00:12:44We see Dani Almo create himself a wonderful opportunity and do the opposite.
00:12:48Just kind of panics at the last minute and snatches.
00:12:50Which is surprising for him because he's having a fabulous tournament.
00:12:55England looking to respond.
00:12:56Bellingham.
00:12:58Now Shaw.
00:12:59Perfect ball to Luke Shaw.
00:13:01And Dani Carvajal is able to see it now.
00:13:04Bellingham knows as well, as you said, sorry to Shaw.
00:13:06Because that's not a difficult pass.
00:13:09And he just gives Carvajal everything in his favour.
00:13:13Dave Seaman.
00:13:19Frankie's wife's not a keeper and that was said last week.
00:13:22I thought it was you.
00:13:23I'm joking.
00:13:24I know you are.
00:13:25I clearly knew that.
00:13:27Was it not Jens Lehmann?
00:13:28It was, yeah.
00:13:29Thanks very much.
00:13:30Good points.
00:13:33They've got a clitsman as well.
00:13:40It's going to be a really important period in the next few minutes for England.
00:13:43They've just got to compose themselves, get themselves back in the game.
00:13:47It's that little five minute period.
00:13:49Right at the start of the second half, dear me.
00:13:52Mean second.
00:13:53Trying to get the better of Kukere.
00:14:01Nice.
00:14:04Now Shaw.
00:14:07Bellingham.
00:14:10Bellingham.
00:14:13Stones feeds it into the back of Sackler once more.
00:14:16And the X goes to Mason.
00:14:18Will he make it?
00:14:21It's now Spain's turn to defend it.
00:14:23Bellingham.
00:14:25Trying to find it for a cross from Walker, but it's too big.
00:14:30Shaw will keep it in on this side, will he?
00:14:32Not quite.
00:14:33Well, it's not like him, I have to say.
00:14:36He's got so much time on that right-hand side as well.
00:14:38Just to pick out the right ball.
00:14:41Just try to whip it.
00:14:42Sometimes when you're trying to whip it in so fast with a lot of pace,
00:14:46you've only got to get the angle of your foot on the ball slightly wrong,
00:14:50and it does that.
00:14:53Goals usually are the premium in the European Championship final.
00:14:58Only two to feature more than three goals, 76 in 2012.
00:15:03Spain won the latter, now four goals to nil.
00:15:07It's never been five goals in a final.
00:15:10One goal has been enough to decide three of the last five.
00:15:17Only three times in the last 40 years have both teams scored.
00:15:28They've got some trends to back.
00:15:30Simon's ball has found its way to Morata.
00:15:33It's in an ending.
00:15:34Trying to get away from Jon Stones, and he's successfully done that.
00:15:38A beautiful ball.
00:15:39Goalkeeper up to Morata, holds it off well.
00:15:43Makes a run off Stones.
00:15:47This is the yellow card, free-kicking the yellow card.
00:15:51They're going to do it again, aren't they?
00:15:53They've been doing it for a while.
00:15:56They're going to do it again, aren't they?
00:15:58They're going to make us wait right to the end.
00:16:04Well, we always thought it was going to be that way, didn't we?
00:16:13Kicker has gone down.
00:16:14It's a free-kick.
00:16:15Referee not forthcoming this time.
00:16:17Referee who is a part-time bailiff, by the way.
00:16:26The reason he's been handled in this difficult situation to deal with.
00:16:31Morata.
00:16:33Zuba bending.
00:16:55Carvajal.
00:17:05Carvajal.
00:17:10Back by Ronald.
00:17:12Looking for Tony Carvajal.
00:17:15He read it.
00:17:17Now he's trying to get it away, but hasn't been able to do that.
00:17:20It's back with Morata.
00:17:21And look at the space for Williams again.
00:17:23Morata didn't spot it.
00:17:25Yeah, and he should have.
00:17:26I'll tell you right now, I know he's taking the option,
00:17:28and normally I wouldn't be critical of somebody having a positive goal.
00:17:31But Williams is in a far better position.
00:17:33They're coming in off the left-hand side.
00:17:35Good block again.
00:17:36Gay.
00:17:37Mark Gay has just gone round and given Foden and Bellingham
00:17:40a piece of his mind.
00:17:42Urging a bit more from his team.
00:17:44Yeah, they're getting into wide areas now in Spain
00:17:46because they're breaking that midfield press
00:17:49and then they're running at the centre-halves
00:17:51and they're just getting narrow.
00:17:53And when that happens, the space opens up outside.
00:18:03It's Yamal again, and he's trying to find Morata.
00:18:05He has found Morata, and he's slipped it past the goal.
00:18:08Stones was there to cover it anyway.
00:18:10It wasn't going on target.
00:18:11Carvajal, back to Lamine Yamal.
00:18:14Spain having a spell.
00:18:19Bellingham takes it away for England,
00:18:21but again, difficult to find the way.
00:18:24The route clear of his own half.
00:18:28Ruiz.
00:18:29Now Williams, trying one from distance
00:18:32and flashing it past the right-hand upright.
00:18:35Another warning sign for England.
00:18:38It takes a touch, doesn't it?
00:18:40On his right foot, goes through the defender's legs,
00:18:43John Stones, and that is not far away.
00:18:46It's a lovely strike.
00:18:48That's the ball from Lamal.
00:18:51Morata does brilliantly.
00:18:55It's a brilliant run,
00:18:57but the ball is a little ball into the inside right position.
00:19:01No-one within five yards of Yamal.
00:19:05He's just turning,
00:19:06and that's why the centre-halves have to come really narrow.
00:19:09It was interesting in the game against France,
00:19:12the wingers came in very narrow.
00:19:14They gave the win to Koukourea and Navas,
00:19:16who were the full-backs that night.
00:19:18Against Germany, the wingers stayed really wide,
00:19:20especially in the first half.
00:19:22That ball in the inside channel has caused England a problem
00:19:25in the last 10 or 15 minutes or so.
00:19:28Well, you can see he's changed his position ten yards infield.
00:19:32First half, he was more or less hugging the touchline.
00:19:36He's at least ten yards further inside.
00:19:38Step over by Bellingham, the return doesn't sneak through.
00:19:42Bellingham thought he was blocked off.
00:19:46Knights fell on deaf ears.
00:19:51Sturms by Yamal.
00:19:57England warming up.
00:19:59Substitutes down in front of us, away to our right,
00:20:01quite vociferously.
00:20:03One of them is Karl Palmer.
00:20:10Ezri Konza is down there as well.
00:20:13We hear that Oli Watkins is about to emerge.
00:20:20We just saw him getting changed there, so he is imminent.
00:20:31Right, some depression.
00:20:40They need something, something different.
00:20:43We know they won't panic anyway.
00:20:45He is coming on.
00:20:48But they do need something.
00:20:49They just need to have a little word from Maino.
00:20:51Reiss needs to get hold of him a little bit.
00:20:53Just say, just sit next to me for ten minutes.
00:20:55Just block that space up.
00:20:57It's where they're coming and running at us, down the middle.
00:21:00Then they're going wide.
00:21:02Just block that off and stop it, and then you can go again.
00:21:08I can totally understand the substitution,
00:21:10but what they also need, guys,
00:21:12they need more from their influential players.
00:21:14And by that I mean Bellingham and Foden.
00:21:16They need a lot more from their creative players.
00:21:18A lot more.
00:21:44Congratulations to Oli Watkins from Gareth Southgate.
00:21:49Watkins who provided the moment of the semi-final.
00:21:55Morata, linking the play well.
00:21:58Olmo, back to Morata again.
00:22:00Shaw intervened.
00:22:02Did block up that inside channel.
00:22:04Second time he's made that run, Morata.
00:22:07Just the blind side of the left-centre back gate.
00:22:10He likes that space in there.
00:22:12He's got it covered up.
00:22:14That little wall pass, Zidane has pulled all the strings in that midfield already.
00:22:19Rodri is not being missed at the moment.
00:22:34Saka.
00:22:39Walker.
00:22:41Then on to Foden. Bit of space for him.
00:22:43No-one really in the penalty area to get a cutback.
00:22:49Mainu.
00:22:51Kukurea tried to thwart him.
00:22:53Stuck to his guns.
00:22:55Komi Mainu.
00:22:56He's been helped out by Saka too.
00:23:00That's just lifted the England crowd.
00:23:11Here's the change then. Who's it going to be?
00:23:14Harry Kane.
00:23:21The captain lasts just an hour.
00:23:30He's often criticised for not making the bold changes.
00:23:34To take your captain off after an hour is pretty bold.
00:23:37But needs must. England need to come from behind.
00:23:41Absolutely is a must.
00:23:43Because like I said at half-time, he's not dull enough.
00:23:49He's just got to put some legs on.
00:23:51Just got to try and stretch his back foot.
00:23:54He'll certainly do that.
00:23:57Mainu.
00:23:58Lovely little body swerve.
00:24:00Almost got away.
00:24:01Bellingham.
00:24:08Kane.
00:24:12Shaw.
00:24:31Now Saka.
00:24:37A bit better from England.
00:24:39He thought it was upended by Williams.
00:24:41And the referee agrees.
00:24:44Yeah, well, he was, wasn't he?
00:24:47Kukurea is getting involved over on the far side.
00:24:50And Morata has just been pushed away.
00:24:52Walker having words too.
00:24:54He's the captain now.
00:24:56Walker just forcibly took the ball off Kukurela.
00:25:03Good position, this.
00:25:04Foden's left foot.
00:25:05Tight on it.
00:25:06Going towards that far post.
00:25:11Just blocks him, doesn't he?
00:25:12Right arm comes across.
00:25:13Free kick.
00:25:14Simple decision for the referee, that.
00:25:16But you're right, Lee.
00:25:18Now, this free kick.
00:25:20Because it's wide and because it's quite up the pitch,
00:25:22it's perfect for an inswinger.
00:25:24Just aim for between the penalty spot and the back post.
00:25:27Take your chances.
00:25:28Get the boys to attack it.
00:25:32Watkins.
00:25:34In between.
00:25:35Lenormat and Zubimendi.
00:25:36Stones up from the back.
00:25:39Sakhar in there.
00:25:40Gehi in there.
00:25:41Stones coming round the back post.
00:25:44Reiss and Walker lurking on the edge.
00:25:47Spain with everyone back.
00:25:50Foden's delivery.
00:25:52Just a bit too high for Gehi.
00:26:03Good looking for Foden.
00:26:06He's trying to cause problems for Kukerea.
00:26:08He has caused a problem for Kukerea.
00:26:12Space developing.
00:26:13Sakhar into Bellingham.
00:26:15Lovely turn.
00:26:16Still going.
00:26:17Bellingham!
00:26:18Narrowly wide.
00:26:19He's given a free kick.
00:26:20What a touch it is.
00:26:21What a touch in the half-term from Bellingham.
00:26:23They've given him a little bit of space to hit the left foot short.
00:26:25This here, that's brilliant.
00:26:27Opens it up for him.
00:26:28He takes another top corner.
00:26:30That's brilliant.
00:26:31Opens it up for him.
00:26:32He takes another touch with his left foot.
00:26:35Great skill.
00:26:36Just great skill.
00:26:48Just couldn't get enough whip on it to bring it in.
00:26:51He wouldn't have counted anyway
00:26:52because the referee had given a foul in the build-up to it.
00:26:57I actually thought he'd given the foul.
00:27:00On Bellingham, but clearly not.
00:27:03The replay didn't look much of a foul.
00:27:05No.
00:27:06I think he's given the goal kick now,
00:27:07but beautiful take.
00:27:08As I say, it took two or three players out with the one half-term.
00:27:11Takes another touch with his left foot short.
00:27:13Probably, the strike's clean enough
00:27:15and he's got enough time.
00:27:16He should be hitting the target with that,
00:27:17making the goalkeeper work.
00:27:21Luke Shaw's had a little word with him as well
00:27:23because he was just about sliding free as a bird.
00:27:28Stance.
00:27:30Shaw.
00:27:31Bellingham.
00:27:32Nice.
00:27:36A bit more of the ball now, England.
00:27:42Walker.
00:27:43Drifting one into the channel for Watkins.
00:27:44Almost.
00:27:46Almost.
00:27:47Do you know something?
00:27:48He's unlucky.
00:27:49I think he's right.
00:27:50I think the defender just takes a touch
00:27:51because I think Ollie Watkins was dying
00:27:53to just swing a left foot at that.
00:27:56Give him a call on the wrong foot.
00:28:00I'm feeling for it.
00:28:01Well, it flicked the top of his head,
00:28:03but you're right.
00:28:04Just stretching.
00:28:0765 minutes gone.
00:28:12Spain themselves have shown good resilience.
00:28:14They've got their clear way of playing.
00:28:17It's helped them be incredibly consistent.
00:28:19We can argue about extra-time results,
00:28:21but 90 minutes,
00:28:24they became the first team to taste victory
00:28:28in six successive games in the finals
00:28:31on Tuesday evening when they beat France
00:28:34by two goals to one.
00:28:46Williams.
00:28:49Space for Yamal, who's got him behind Shaw here.
00:28:52Shaw's got backing time as he's kicked,
00:28:54but he's had to make a big save.
00:28:56Well, he thought, Shaw, they'd done enough,
00:28:58but you never can take your eyes off Yamal.
00:29:01That position again.
00:29:03Just look at him there,
00:29:04he's trying to get back from possession.
00:29:08Eventually, Yamal just gets the shot.
00:29:11That's a brilliant save.
00:29:12Could that come behind Shaw's feet as well?
00:29:15Pickford seeing that late.
00:29:18I feel a little bit for Shaw there, Lee,
00:29:21because I think he half thinks because
00:29:23they've got good possession in football,
00:29:25he can take care of Yamal,
00:29:27and all of a sudden it breaks down like that
00:29:29and he's under pressure to get back in.
00:29:30That's supposed to be the flexibility of that role.
00:29:34Here's the corner.
00:29:35Laporte trying to cause damage.
00:29:37Fogan trying to bring it away.
00:29:40Maneu protecting it.
00:29:42Morata causing him grief.
00:29:43That's going to be a Spanish throw,
00:29:45they're going to make a change here.
00:29:46Oyuthabo about to come on.
00:29:54Morata coming off the pitch now
00:29:56to be replaced by Oyuthabo.
00:30:03A Sociedad striker who
00:30:05had a really good second half of the season.
00:30:12Morata taking the applause from the Spanish fans.
00:30:15He's done his job.
00:30:17Have Spain done theirs?
00:30:20The English fans will hope that's not the case.
00:30:22Spain did come into this tournament in rare form.
00:30:24They won 16 of Luis de la Fuente's 20 games in charge.
00:30:29The only teams to beat them,
00:30:32Colombia and Scotland.
00:30:36What?
00:30:38I was going over of the goal actually.
00:30:40It was a 2-0 comfortable job.
00:30:44Rodri wasn't happy with that.
00:30:53Union want to be third on that list.
00:30:56They're going to come from behind.
00:31:1014th goal from Spain.
00:31:12It's a record equaling goal for the Euros.
00:31:15He's in the way by Stones.
00:31:18He levelled the French's record at the 84 Euros.
00:31:25Union keen to ensure they don't get any more.
00:31:28He's enjoying himself now, which is not ideal.
00:31:32He's picking up the ball wide.
00:31:34He's picking it up in the 10th position.
00:31:37Flicking it here, flicking it there.
00:31:40Cole Palmer's going to come on.
00:31:42He's definitely going to come on.
00:31:43Cole Palmer's going to come on.
00:31:45He's definitely become more central in the second half.
00:31:47Absolutely without a doubt.
00:31:51Neymar's delivery.
00:31:52Pickford with a punch.
00:31:56Dani Almo.
00:31:58It's a deep cross this time and Pickford's got to get there again.
00:32:03Williams ahead of Saka.
00:32:05Cole Palmer imminent.
00:32:08Zubi Mendy.
00:32:09He's had a good start to his inclusion.
00:32:12He had to get across there.
00:32:15Fabian Ruiz.
00:32:17Snatched at it.
00:32:19But they had Pickford interested.
00:32:22Just need him back, doesn't he?
00:32:23If Devin wanted to, he can't get his knee over it.
00:32:26You can see what he's trying to do, can't you?
00:32:27They're coming at all angles, that ball in from this side.
00:32:31Over Mendy, absolutely brilliant.
00:32:33Pickford called upon twice with the fist.
00:32:42Kobi Meinu is the one who makes way for Cole Palmer.
00:32:47Who has provided England with a bit of X-factor off the bench.
00:32:52He's relaxed but highly technical.
00:32:57He plays and as always plays like a kid in the playground.
00:33:01He's a proper gem.
00:33:02Watkins almost escaping past Carvajal.
00:33:06He's got the ball.
00:33:07Watkins almost escaping past Carvajal.
00:33:13A mistake there by Danny Carvajal.
00:33:20Interesting to see how England rejig it now.
00:33:23Palmer looks like going over to that far side.
00:33:29He just pointed to Foden and said,
00:33:31you go inside left and I'll go inside right.
00:33:34Saka.
00:33:36Couldn't protect it.
00:33:51Thomas has got a bit of a bigger job on his hands now,
00:33:53because obviously Ballyman will want the ball.
00:33:56He won't be too keen about defending just in front of that back line.
00:34:03England, they need a goal.
00:34:09They have to gamble.
00:34:10They have to risk.
00:34:11There's no point in dying wondering what might have been.
00:34:19Left side flag is up.
00:34:24Left side position just prior to that move.
00:34:27Intense discussions taking place on the England bench.
00:34:32Steve Holland and Gareth Southgate
00:34:35trying to wrestle back control of this game,
00:34:37which has certainly swung in favour of this Spanish team.
00:34:44Those rare skirmishes that England were hammering in the first half
00:34:47have kind of disappeared.
00:34:50Can't afford to give the ball away like that.
00:34:53Can't afford to give the ball away like that.
00:34:55Zoubi Mendy,
00:34:56looking to feed the ball to Oyafalba.
00:34:58It's a tight angle.
00:34:59Oh, I tell you, that was a real bonus.
00:35:02There was too much on that pass from Zoubi Mendy,
00:35:05because you could have given him a lot easier.
00:35:07Saka's onside here.
00:35:09Charging at Lepore.
00:35:13Makaia Saka feeding Bellingham,
00:35:15touching it back.
00:35:16Palmer with the end!
00:35:18Cole Palmer off the bench.
00:35:22To bring the X-Factor again.
00:35:25England's Mr Brightside
00:35:27sends the whole country
00:35:29into a state of bliss.
00:35:34Well, we've all been waiting for him to come back on the pitch.
00:35:37He's an absolute joy to watch.
00:35:41Just the calmness.
00:35:42We talk about passing the ball into the...
00:35:44back of the net.
00:35:45This is the epitome of that.
00:35:47It's a really good break.
00:35:50Wants to get it out to Saka.
00:35:52He just draws Lepore towards him.
00:35:55Just look at Palmer.
00:35:56Bobby, your screen.
00:35:57Just wandering.
00:35:58Edge.
00:35:59Lay back.
00:36:00Pass.
00:36:01Absolutely brilliant.
00:36:08Watch how beautifully composed finish that is.
00:36:11Takes the slightest of deflections.
00:36:14He won't mind, though.
00:36:16He starts the move by giving it to Saka.
00:36:18Times he's run perfectly.
00:36:19Beautiful lay-off.
00:36:20Way to the pass.
00:36:21And the finish.
00:36:22Executed.
00:36:23You don't have to blast it into the net.
00:36:25Just pass it into the net.
00:36:26Southgate's a genius.
00:36:32Two minutes and 23 seconds
00:36:35after coming on as a substitute.
00:36:37Koltava makes an instant impact.
00:36:42Just when England needed it the most.
00:36:53It was really interesting, guys,
00:36:54because literally ten seconds before it,
00:36:57Zoubim ended a real opportunity to play a pass through
00:37:01to Arsenal.
00:37:02And he over-hit the back of the net.
00:37:05And he over-hit the pass.
00:37:07And all of a sudden, England were counting on him.
00:37:12Bellingham.
00:37:13More space for Parma.
00:37:16Saka.
00:37:19Three in the box to Amat.
00:37:20Takes on Kukerea.
00:37:21It's a low cross which is cleared away by Laporte.
00:37:25Listen to this crowd.
00:37:27The noise has gone through the roof.
00:37:31Pickford is playing conductor.
00:37:35Bellingham.
00:37:37Bellingham.
00:37:45Talked about Gareth,
00:37:46talked about Bellingham,
00:37:47it looks like he's ruled his race.
00:37:49Yeah.
00:37:51I could get into a spate.
00:37:53It hasn't really gone at all today, I don't think.
00:38:34going long and Walker is on the chase. I don't think even he is going to be able to get hold
00:38:44of that. He's explaining, you know where I want it.
00:38:55The vibe's completely changed. Like you've no idea.
00:39:04Bellingham might look like he is running on empty but it was his deft touch back to the
00:39:11edge of the area which set up Cole Palmer for that equalising goal.
00:39:16Yeah and it was beautifully weighted, you're right to mention that because Palmer didn't
00:39:20have to break a stride at all, Sam. And as I say, the most composed of finishes.
00:39:25Interesting to see whether it took a little bit of deflection, it might or might not,
00:39:28it doesn't matter. Beautiful finish.
00:39:35Ruiz forward.
00:39:39He's raised the concentration levels for England again which have lapsed just a little bit.
00:39:45Applying Gerhi to get in one or two faces and raise their hackles.
00:39:53They're back in the game now.
00:40:15Ziggy Mendy.
00:40:37Carvajal into the box. Missed by Walker but missed by Williams too.
00:40:45Williams' delivery into the near post.
00:40:50Mendy was lurking at the back post and when a far ball was causing problems it's going to be a corner.
00:40:56He did well there, Williams, because he just squared Walker up.
00:40:59He was kind of on the swivel ready for the little trick.
00:41:03Once you square a full-back up you can take him inside.
00:41:08Scone's a lot of fun looking either, if you get the opportunity.
00:41:15Corner kick.
00:41:18Grounded penalty area. Bellingham with the header away.
00:41:21Mike Ford to Fabian Ruiz.
00:41:23Trying to get it back into the box.
00:41:25Palmer taking no chances at all.
00:41:28Lofting it clear.
00:41:32You can see he was a comfortable team, not a forced team there.
00:41:37Half-foot ball.
00:41:38You can see he was a comfortable team, not a forced team there.
00:41:44How football can change so very quickly.
00:41:54It's been a feature of the way that England have played their games.
00:41:59Clawed their way back into another knockout tie.
00:42:08It's been a feature of the way that England have played their games.
00:42:11FANS SHOUT OUT
00:42:32Moyazama.
00:42:35He will just allow it to wander out.
00:42:38Sensible defending by him.
00:42:40How good is he, by the way, in this tournament?
00:42:42He really made a mark.
00:42:45Gives him a lot of nudges, a goal.
00:42:48Difficult to see from that angle.
00:42:50My money's on it.
00:42:52Takes a little bit of deflection, maybe off Zoubamendi.
00:42:55As I say, it doesn't matter.
00:42:57It's all about the technique.
00:42:59He should have told the lady with that one.
00:43:08Maybe he's thinking with Garry Sapko, England are in safe hands.
00:43:16Yes, he did just say that.
00:43:18Yeah, I couldn't believe it myself, actually.
00:43:29FANS SHOUT OUT
00:43:53Sitting back in that low blocking,
00:43:55the difference is now we've got Palmer on the pitch,
00:43:58but when you do win the ball back,
00:44:00there's a break on.
00:44:04Foden, poking it through to Bellingham.
00:44:06Watkins has made a dart down the left channel.
00:44:08England can't get away.
00:44:10It's been turned over well by Zoubamendi.
00:44:12Now Williams is hustling forward.
00:44:17Omo.
00:44:19And back to Omo again.
00:44:20It comes to Lamin Yamal.
00:44:22Stopped by Pickford.
00:44:24It's another huge stop by Jordan Pickford.
00:44:27You better believe it as he's got his score.
00:44:29I cannot believe it.
00:44:30Excellent move.
00:44:32Intricate pass in and around the box.
00:44:36And the ball breaks to the youngster.
00:44:38He's got to be finishing that, but great save.
00:44:45I don't know how many lives England have had,
00:44:47but they're running out of them.
00:44:52That's a massive miss from the youngster, it really is.
00:44:54The goal just opened up for him on that far side.
00:44:57Or he can just hook it to that near post.
00:45:00Any of them would have done.
00:45:02It's more or less straight at Pickford.
00:45:06Omo had a chance just prior to that as well.
00:45:08Come down for him.
00:45:12Looks like Nacho is going to come off the bench for Spain.
00:45:18Eight minutes to go.
00:45:19Walker trying to get clear after pinching the ball from Williams.
00:45:23It's going to be an England goal kick.
00:45:27Change at the back, Robin Le Norma.
00:45:30He's finished for the night and on comes Nacho.
00:45:37Just look at that, he just misses it completely.
00:45:39He's just trying to wrap his foot around it, Ali,
00:45:41and he's not quite...
00:45:43He's a bit square on with it, isn't he?
00:45:45He's got to finish that.
00:45:48As you see, he just started outside the far post.
00:46:01Some time ago, those Spanish fans thought they were heading
00:46:07to another European Championship victory,
00:46:09but England have just given them pause for thought.
00:46:18Catcher.
00:46:22Bringing the ball out of defence.
00:46:26Shifting it on to a deep pass.
00:46:30And it's a goal.
00:46:34And it's a goal.
00:46:36And it's a goal.
00:46:38And it's a goal.
00:46:40And it's a goal.
00:46:44And it's a goal.
00:46:46Shifting it on to a deep Danielmo.
00:46:53Yamal.
00:46:56Carvajal finding Ruiz.
00:46:58England dropping deep.
00:47:02Jordan with the block this time.
00:47:11Good touch by Williams, he might get it back here.
00:47:13Interjected, and it's pushed behind and away for another corner.
00:47:17Bright as a button, Danielmo there.
00:47:20Shaw does well to come in and cover that.
00:47:37Spanish legends up there, WPL,
00:47:39Chavi as well, just behind.
00:47:41As that ball comes in.
00:47:45Saka away.
00:47:54England dealt with that corner.
00:47:57It's the tenth of the night for Spain.
00:48:01Yamal's on the march again.
00:48:05Drifts it into the centre, Pickford came.
00:48:08And intervened.
00:48:10Just got caught out, Saka, ended up at left back.
00:48:14He wasn't quite sure what was behind him.
00:48:16It was Yamal.
00:48:25England will make a couple more alterations.
00:48:27It looks like
00:48:29Karne Gallagher and Kieran Trippier
00:48:31are stripped and ready to enter the fray.
00:48:38Gallagher will certainly give them
00:48:40energy.
00:48:42Trippier has just actually picked up his bib
00:48:44and sat back down again.
00:48:57Clearly Southgate still a little bit concerned.
00:48:59This is Olmo,
00:49:01or Yotharbal.
00:49:03Walker's going to get there, is he not?
00:49:05No, it's come through to Yotharbal!
00:49:08And he's tucked it in
00:49:10in front of the Spanish fans.
00:49:14And as quick as a flash,
00:49:16Yotharbal
00:49:18has put Spain in front
00:49:20with four minutes to go.
00:49:22England will be hoping
00:49:24that an offside ruling comes in here.
00:49:28They'll be praying an offside ruling comes in here.
00:49:30Otherwise,
00:49:32Spain are on their way.
00:49:34Listen, Sam, it's really tight.
00:49:36My first instinct was
00:49:38it was just off.
00:49:40Time will tell. Let's talk about the goal.
00:49:42A beautiful move
00:49:44down the left-hand side from Spain.
00:49:46A fantastic delivery
00:49:48and a wonderful, wonderful
00:49:50first-touch finish.
00:49:52Yes, as the ball came in,
00:49:54my first thought was, he's off.
00:49:56Please be off. Please go ahead
00:49:58of the defender.
00:50:00Perfectly placed.
00:50:02He's on.
00:50:04But what a pass.
00:50:06Just into an area
00:50:08for a follower to attack.
00:50:10Get across your defender.
00:50:12The goalkeeper's got to come up himself.
00:50:14It's a beautiful finish.
00:50:16It's very, very close.
00:50:18But what a lovely, well-worked goal.
00:50:22Kristina Runkle is in our booth
00:50:24in Berlin.
00:50:26There's not going to be a VAR check.
00:50:29Semi-automated
00:50:31offside technology will be implemented
00:50:33here to see whether or not
00:50:35how tight it is. If it is, it's going to be one of those
00:50:37that people dislike, the tonial
00:50:39offside. But as they review it,
00:50:41the technology is incredibly accurate
00:50:43and will confirm whether or not it is.
00:50:49Well, there's no review
00:50:51and England have no reprieve.
00:50:53And Ivan Toni
00:50:55prepares
00:50:57to come into
00:50:59the final few seconds of this final.
00:51:01Needing to perform
00:51:03a rescue act.
00:51:05Here is Watkins, trying to turn.
00:51:07Just couldn't take it in.
00:51:09He's in as well.
00:51:11Brilliant
00:51:13ball into him.
00:51:15And he just gets away from it.
00:51:17That ball from Bellingham
00:51:19takes it on his left on the inside
00:51:21He didn't really have control of it.
00:51:23It's just run away from him.
00:51:25That's exactly what happens in the half-turn there.
00:51:27It takes a heavy touch on his left foot.
00:51:29Anything in and around his feet, he'll get a strike away.
00:51:37Toni is on.
00:51:41Off comes Phil Foden.
00:51:43Another change incoming for Spain.
00:51:45Raquel Moreno, who scored the winner
00:51:47against Germany, is about to come on
00:51:50for the mean Yaman.
00:51:5289 minutes.
00:51:54England have
00:51:56mere seconds now
00:51:58to save themselves again.
00:52:00They need a big intervention.
00:52:04They need one of their big players to come to the fore.
00:52:08Cole Palmer with a set-piece.
00:52:20Needs a perfect delivery.
00:52:22They're attacking at the far post.
00:52:24Rice is there, and it's off the line.
00:52:26It comes back in again, and Rice can't convert it.
00:52:28They've just about
00:52:30saved themselves.
00:52:32I think it's Danny Olmo.
00:52:34I mean, what a save that's on the line.
00:52:36It is.
00:52:38Danny Olmo from Marguerite.
00:52:40Declan Rice has two goals in it.
00:52:42Bounces to him, and then...
00:52:44He's just jumping at the last one.
00:52:46That's a comfortable save.
00:52:48This is brilliant from Danny Olmo.
00:52:50That saves a certain goal.
00:52:52And he just can't get enough
00:52:54inches. Rice to go up and
00:52:56redirect that final header.
00:52:58All those behind the goal.
00:53:00Harry Kane on the bench, feeling the pain.
00:53:02How did it not go in?
00:53:06That's what he's there for.
00:53:08To take that goal at all costs.
00:53:10Four minutes, guys.
00:53:12Four minutes.
00:53:14A goal required. An onslaught
00:53:16needed.
00:53:22We don't normally need four minutes. It's okay.
00:53:26And the Spain team think they're getting
00:53:28over the line. Look at them at the bottom of that picture.
00:53:30But he's on now.
00:53:34To supplement the attack for England.
00:53:40Scurrying to retrieve it.
00:53:46Into the air by Laporte.
00:53:48Saka will get there.
00:53:50Now Watkins fouled on the edge of the box.
00:53:52Nacho's gone down.
00:53:54That's clever.
00:53:56I'm not sure there's a lot of contact.
00:53:58We'll see in a minute.
00:54:00But there's no way
00:54:02that he's not going down after that.
00:54:04Because he sees the challenge coming.
00:54:06And he's not going down.
00:54:08And he's not going down.
00:54:10And he's not going down.
00:54:12And he's not going down.
00:54:15And he's not going down.
00:54:17And he's not going down.
00:54:19And he's not going down.
00:54:21And he's not going down.
00:54:23And he's not going down.
00:54:25And he's not going down.
00:54:27And he's not going down.
00:54:29And he's not going down.
00:54:31And he's not going down.
00:54:33And he's not going down.
00:54:35And he's not going down.
00:54:37And he's not going down.
00:54:39And he's not going down.
00:54:41And he's not going down.
00:54:43Injured.
00:54:45Not able to take part tonight.
00:54:47Watching from the sidelines.
00:54:49The rest of his teammates
00:54:51trying to get Spain over the line.
00:54:55Nations League winners.
00:54:57They think they're on the verge of winning this.
00:54:59But England will still believe
00:55:01there's one more chance.
00:55:05They will hope there's one more chance.
00:55:09Rice forward.
00:55:13There will be a desperation about England now
00:55:15to try and get it forward.
00:55:17To force it into their opponent's half.
00:55:19And have a free kick.
00:55:21Quickly taken.
00:55:23He wasn't alive to it.
00:55:25He has just about kept hold of it.
00:55:27He did. I don't think he wanted it.
00:55:29He didn't know a lot about it.
00:55:31But I tell you what, he reacted well.
00:55:33Ends up getting a free kick.
00:55:35And the ball will now go where it should have gone
00:55:37two seconds ago.
00:55:3990 seconds of stoppage time to play.
00:55:41Watch it.
00:55:43Into the opposition penalty area.
00:55:45There will be a scramble.
00:55:49Pickford's delivery.
00:55:53It's a Spanish head that gets first contact.
00:55:55Saka.
00:55:57I don't know what he did there.
00:55:59But Kukere has made the most of it.
00:56:01He's just stuck his hand out to protect himself.
00:56:03Because Kukere
00:56:05is a lot smaller than him.
00:56:07He's probably just caught him in the face.
00:56:09It's just there.
00:56:13This is the goal.
00:56:15This is the ball.
00:56:17It's the knee.
00:56:23But the quality of the ball.
00:56:25The move down the left-hand side.
00:56:27Proper strikers finishing.
00:56:29Getting across the front post.
00:56:31Just getting a surface on it.
00:56:33Means despair for Gareth.
00:56:35And his team.
00:56:40We may not have seen them coming
00:56:42pre-tournament.
00:56:43But Spain have been in the last two Nations League finals.
00:56:45Winning the last one on penalties.
00:56:47Maybe they were underestimated.
00:56:49Discounted a bit before the tournament started.
00:56:59Newfoundland's got it.
00:57:01But this time he is offside.
00:57:03England do have it again.
00:57:05Pickford wants to get it upfield again.
00:57:09Spain are European champions.
00:57:11And in the end.
00:57:13The best team
00:57:15probably won it.
00:57:19But how many times
00:57:21is your heart going to break?
00:57:27Sometimes
00:57:29a picture can say more
00:57:31than a thousand words.
00:57:33And the look on Gareth Southgate's face
00:57:35tells it all.
00:57:4158 years of hurt.
00:57:43It never stops you dreaming.
00:57:45But you just have to wonder
00:57:47whether those dreams
00:57:49will ever come true.
00:57:53Spain have been the best team in the tournament.
00:57:55And they have won the tournament.
00:57:57But England kept it close.
00:57:59They have pipped England
00:58:01at the post.
00:58:05England struggled to remember their lines early on.
00:58:07But slowly they found their role
00:58:09in this European Championship.
00:58:11But tonight they are just a supporting cast again.
00:58:13The first team to lose
00:58:15back-to-back European Championship finals.
00:58:17The centre stage
00:58:19belongs to Spain.
00:58:21And they have won it.
00:58:23The first team to lose
00:58:25back-to-back European Championship finals.
00:58:27The centre stage
00:58:29belongs to Spain.
00:58:31They are European champions.
00:58:33Yeah, you've got to feel for them.
00:58:35There's some broken hearts out there.
00:58:37There's some broken hearts
00:58:39in the stadium as well.
00:58:41You're right, Sam.
00:58:43The best team did win the tournament.
00:58:45The best team probably won tonight.
00:58:47They spluttered
00:58:49tonight.
00:58:51They had no control of anything.
00:58:53Any part of it.
00:58:55Spain were just too good for them in the end.
00:58:57And it is disappointment.
00:58:59Certainly for the team.
00:59:01But for Gareth,
00:59:03if this is to be the end,
00:59:05then what a sad way to go out.
00:59:07It was meant to be a lot different than this.
00:59:11Yeah, congratulations to Spain, guys.
00:59:13Seven wins in a row
00:59:15in the tournament tells you all you need to know.
00:59:17Deserved champions.
00:59:19Not the best half at all.
00:59:21But for me, they were slightly better second half
00:59:23and deserved a victory.
00:59:25Three classic finishes, I've got to say.
00:59:27I loved every one of the goals we saw.
00:59:29Particularly the one from Spain.
00:59:31The move down the left-hand side, the cross.
00:59:33The run from the striker
00:59:35getting across the front post.
00:59:37A good finish.
00:59:39England had a good tournament.
00:59:41There's no doubt about it.
00:59:43But the best team in the tournament won the tournament.
00:59:45History has been written in Berlin,
00:59:47the Southgate wanted this chapter to end.
00:59:51But England's search for glory
00:59:53is becoming a never-ending story.
00:59:57It's finished in Berlin.
00:59:59Spain 2, England 1.
01:00:05Thank you, Sam, Lee and Ali
01:00:07for all your great work throughout this European championship.
01:00:09Congratulations to Spain,
01:00:11the first team to win the European title
01:00:13four times.
01:00:15Roy, let's be magnanimous.
01:00:17The best team, certainly in the championship,
01:00:19won.
01:00:21Did the better team win tonight?
01:00:23The best team won tonight, the best team won the tournament.
01:00:25A record over the last 12 months.
01:00:27It's been fantastic.
01:00:29They've got a lovely mix.
01:00:31They've got Spain, they've got counter-attack,
01:00:33they've got pace, they've got youth, they've got experience.
01:00:35They've beaten Germany, they've beaten France,
01:00:37they've beaten England for all the talent they've got.
01:00:39I tell you, they've worked their socks off.
01:00:41They've got fight, they've got desire,
01:00:43tough on England,
01:00:45but without a doubt, Spain deserve it.
01:00:47Gary, what do you say?
01:00:49Because the frustration is, when Cole Palmer
01:00:51equalised, you really felt that
01:00:53even momentarily, that momentum
01:00:55was with England for a period.
01:00:57Mark, that's the most impressive thing about
01:00:59Spain tonight, is that you thought the momentum
01:01:01was with England, you thought that the floodgates would
01:01:03open at this end of the pitch, but for them to respond
01:01:05in the way in which they did, get control of the game
01:01:07back, and then go and take a winner,
01:01:09was absolutely fantastic. They were the best team
01:01:11in the tournament, they were the best team tonight,
01:01:13but Mark, it's incredibly tough
01:01:15and painful for England fans, for us,
01:01:17because it feels like, I think
01:01:19Sam said it, a never-ending story,
01:01:21where we just can't get over the line.
01:01:23And maybe we didn't deserve to get over the line,
01:01:25in fact, we didn't do tonight, and through the tournament,
01:01:27because we didn't play as well as we could do in Spain,
01:01:29have been very good, and performance in the end
01:01:31has just caught us out.
01:01:33It doesn't detract from the fact it's crushingly disappointing.
01:01:35Fantastic England support here,
01:01:37and throughout the Championship,
01:01:3999% of which have behaved impeccably,
01:01:41and added to the colour.
01:01:43Look at some of the Spanish greats,
01:01:45look at those legends there, Xavi, Iniesta
01:01:47and Villa. It doesn't take
01:01:49away from that deep, desperate
01:01:51sense of disappointment.
01:01:53We've just come up a bit short, right at the death there.
01:01:55Obviously, we've done
01:01:57unbelievably to get here, and
01:01:59the way we played throughout the tournament,
01:02:01we thought maybe it might have been for us,
01:02:03the luck was playing with us, but in the end,
01:02:05I think, yes, Spain have
01:02:07shown they are the best team in it, but
01:02:09there was a period in that
01:02:11game where I thought we just
01:02:13needed
01:02:15a little bit more.
01:02:17I don't know what to say
01:02:19in respects of playing,
01:02:21we didn't have enough in the first half,
01:02:23we didn't create enough chance in the first half,
01:02:25we didn't put them under enough pressure,
01:02:27and the pressure we did put them under, they were able
01:02:29to weather it, and then their quality came
01:02:31through again. Gareth Southgate is beckoning
01:02:33the players together, and he's had to go round in the
01:02:35horseshoe, and we're at the point
01:02:37of it, as it were, at six o'clock of it,
01:02:39to thank all the fans for their fantastic
01:02:41support. We can
01:02:43talk about Gareth Southgate's future long
01:02:45into the night, to be honest with you. That is
01:02:47for him to tell us, and he's taken
01:02:49England to two European Championship finals,
01:02:51a World Cup semi-final, and a World Cup
01:02:53quarter-final, and has undoubtedly
01:02:55elevated England, in the sense
01:02:57of international status.
01:02:59But you chaps all know, you play at the very, very
01:03:01highest level, and it's one thing to go
01:03:03from C to B, can I put it that way,
01:03:05but B to A, the top spot is
01:03:07the hardest of all. I think England have underlined that.
01:03:09Yeah, you can see that. It's the
01:03:11biggest step for players,
01:03:13for a manager. If you look at the process,
01:03:15a lot of England's young players
01:03:17this tournament have been fantastic. Why can't they
01:03:19quite do it? I know it's a tough essay
01:03:21question. Why can't they quite do it? Well, they lack
01:03:23quality. They lack quality,
01:03:25maybe, throughout the tournament. It was probably that fight
01:03:27and desire, options off the bench, that got them to
01:03:29this final. But when you're watching it,
01:03:31and I've always said, top level sport is brutal.
01:03:33It really is. We've lost
01:03:35big games.
01:03:37The opposition are just better than you. Spain
01:03:39were excellent. We're talking about options off the bench.
01:03:41The Spanish boys done okay, listen, when they came off the
01:03:43bench, and they deserved it, to win seven
01:03:45games in a row. They've obviously won seven in a row
01:03:47from the qualifying, having lost to Scotland the first game.
01:03:49So it's amazing. You have to,
01:03:51again, it's sport. You have to step back and be
01:03:53humble. It's great to win, but also say, listen, we've been
01:03:55beat by the better team. Take your medicine,
01:03:57and regroup, and go again.
01:03:59I think you look at that game,
01:04:01and you have to pick out
01:04:03Jordan Pickford in this game,
01:04:05because as much as Spain,
01:04:07yes, they probably were the better side on the night,
01:04:09but Jordan Pickford helped us in that game.
01:04:11Could have been a lot worse for us. Absolutely
01:04:13could have been a lot worse for us. They had four good
01:04:15chances at 1-0, and then they had another
01:04:17chance at 1-1, that Yamal chance.
01:04:19They had a lot of chances.
01:04:21They could have won the game. We got back into
01:04:23it, but they could have been 2-0 before that.
01:04:25I have to say that,
01:04:27not control the biggest games
01:04:29has been a problem for England teams in many,
01:04:31many, many tournaments, and to have to play
01:04:33from behind the ball and move your whole team up the pitch
01:04:35from the edge of your box to the other end of the pitch,
01:04:37it's very difficult. You can win
01:04:39the odd game doing that. You can win two or three
01:04:41games, but eventually you'll play against a team
01:04:43that just got too much quality, and that's what
01:04:45we found here tonight. As a footballer, the biggest
01:04:47challenge I've always found, when you play
01:04:49against Spain, when you play against a top
01:04:51club team, when you have that possession,
01:04:53it is draining. It is
01:04:55draining, and when you get it, I go back to it, you're
01:04:57thinking, where's your options?
01:04:59The English players
01:05:01are dead on their feet. They are shattered.
01:05:03They're giving everything. It's just a little...
01:05:05It looked dizzying at times, didn't it?
01:05:07That's what they do to you. Side to side,
01:05:09bam, bam, bam. And we're looking at Bellingham here.
01:05:11Bellingham's a top-class player.
01:05:13He's out on his feet. He's out on his feet.
01:05:15He's shattered. That goal as well, Mark.
01:05:17Again, you've got... The winning goal.
01:05:19The movement. The ball
01:05:21from Kukerea, the movement is
01:05:23what we've lacked, I think,
01:05:25in this tournament. Somebody
01:05:27who's ready to make those moves
01:05:29in the box when the ball's coming in.
01:05:31The run, obviously,
01:05:33he'll be praying for it to be offside,
01:05:35but look at that ball, look at that run. He's got himself
01:05:37in between. He's
01:05:39hoping for a good ball in there.
01:05:41And you're saying as a striker, just put it in that channel,
01:05:43I'll finish it off. And a good centre-forward
01:05:45will be making the run in between
01:05:47defenders, and he will finish
01:05:49that. And that is what, unfortunately, we've
01:05:51lacked in this tournament. And we're talking about this
01:05:53brilliant Spanish team. It's a cross,
01:05:55it's a one-touch finish, it's a good ball into the right
01:05:57area. Again, throwing out another, it's
01:05:59a brilliant cross. Cause you all sorts
01:06:01of troubles when you're running back, facing your own goal.
01:06:03Brilliant. One-touch finish.
01:06:05Brilliant. And also, we talk about
01:06:07Spain. They've lost their best player at half-time,
01:06:09by the way. And they've come out there and
01:06:11performed like that in the second half without him.
01:06:13So, look,
01:06:15our lads are absolutely, as Roy's just
01:06:17said... They lost Pedry in the Germany
01:06:19It was a terrible challenge for them to put us early on.
01:06:21Two of the best three midfield players.
01:06:23And our players are absolutely devastated.
01:06:25And I remember, four tournaments ago,
01:06:27when they played Croatia in the semi-final, I said,
01:06:29I wonder whether you'll ever be here again, lads.
01:06:31And they've been here again,
01:06:33and they've been here again. And I have
01:06:35no words for them, to be fair, because they
01:06:37must be absolutely devastated.
01:06:39The fans in this stadium, by the way, behind this goal
01:06:41are devastated. This feels like
01:06:43one time too many for us, I have to say.
01:06:45It just feels like, how long can this go on?
01:06:47It feels like, also, if your players
01:06:49like Declan Rice and Harry Kane and Carl Walker
01:06:51have now lost two finals,
01:06:53how do you begin to ascend
01:06:55the mountain once more? Because you must get
01:06:57to base camp and go, we've got to go
01:06:59all the way back up there again. And we know when we get
01:07:01there, the chances are we've got to go a bit further.
01:07:03But that's the rollercoaster you're on.
01:07:05Last week, too, it was a massive fight for the players.
01:07:07Gareth mentioned it. And then tonight,
01:07:09what you do is you go home, you see your family,
01:07:11they're back pre-season in a couple of weeks.
01:07:13You have to go again.
01:07:15That is the nature of the beast.
01:07:17It's not about determination,
01:07:19dedication, desire, willpower,
01:07:21hard work. This is about being able to
01:07:23control a football match at the highest level
01:07:25against the best teams. And we
01:07:27fail to do it on a regular basis.
01:07:29And that's not a criticism of these lads
01:07:31because I've played in England teams down the years.
01:07:33I'm sure Roy's played in Irish teams where we've been
01:07:35chasing around the ball where they feel like they've got 13
01:07:37and we've got 11. And you're thinking, what's
01:07:39going on here? Where are they? Who do I pick up?
01:07:41And it's happening again. And with them
01:07:43lads out on that pitch tonight,
01:07:45it felt like Spain had an extra player.
01:07:47I think the only frustration for England will be,
01:07:49they've given all, but after a game
01:07:51when you get beat, you go, did we really give it up?
01:07:53Were we at our best? And they've not been at their best
01:07:55for the last few games. They've got away with it.
01:07:57But the point is, at 1-1, again, I go back
01:07:59to that momentum, a little momentum shift.
01:08:01We're behind the goal where Palmer equalised,
01:08:03where the England fans are. And you did feel for a second
01:08:05or two, didn't you?
01:08:07I'll come back to that in a second. Harry Kane,
01:08:09the England skipper, is with Gabriel Clarke.
01:08:12Harry, commiserations.
01:08:14A step too far.
01:08:16Yeah, tough game. You know, it's hard
01:08:18to put into words
01:08:20how we're all feeling right now, but
01:08:22yeah, tough game.
01:08:24We've done well to get back into the game
01:08:26at 1-1, and then
01:08:28we struggled to build on that, really.
01:08:30Yeah, I mean, to concede
01:08:32late on is obviously a really painful
01:08:34one to take.
01:08:36Yeah, I don't know what to say. When Cole Palmer
01:08:38equalises, do you think, here we go again?
01:08:40Yeah, I mean, we've been coming from behind
01:08:42all tournaments, so
01:08:44we know we've got that in the locker room.
01:08:46We know the resilience that we've shown, but
01:08:48yeah, ultimately,
01:08:50once we got back into the game, we did take the
01:08:52next step and go on to win the game,
01:08:54of course.
01:08:56Yeah.
01:08:58Did the comebacks over the last couple of weeks
01:09:00take their toll, maybe, emotionally
01:09:02and physically? Did we see that?
01:09:04I'm not too sure. I think
01:09:06in the first half, especially, we struggled,
01:09:08but everybody in Spain played well
01:09:10and had us under pressure, and we couldn't quite keep the ball
01:09:12like we wanted to. Second half was
01:09:14a little bit better, and then, of course, we got the goal, and
01:09:16we felt like we had the momentum, but
01:09:18we couldn't keep it,
01:09:20and then, obviously, we got caught
01:09:22with a cross there, and
01:09:24yeah, that's the final.
01:09:26Does it feel like an opportunity
01:09:28missed? Obviously, it does.
01:09:30But you also look at this as history
01:09:32made, a first final on foreign
01:09:34soil. No, it's an opportunity missed.
01:09:36Yeah, they're not easy to get to
01:09:38these finals. We've shown unbelievable
01:09:40resilience and character to get to where
01:09:42we are, but ultimately,
01:09:44you have to take it when it comes,
01:09:46and we haven't done that again, so
01:09:48yeah, it's extremely painful.
01:09:50It's going to hurt for a long, long time,
01:09:52and yeah, all we can say
01:09:54is thanks to the fans, thanks to everyone who believed
01:09:56in us, and we'll be back.
01:09:58Many of these players will go again, of course,
01:10:00but maybe not with Gareth.
01:10:02No, that's not for now. That's Gareth's decision.
01:10:04We'll go away and take time on that, but
01:10:06yeah, it's disappointing
01:10:08that we couldn't win it for him.
01:10:10We wanted so badly to win it for him, so
01:10:12we'll see. Thank you, Harry.
01:10:16Just want to come back to this point
01:10:18before we do the presentations.
01:10:20You mentioned it there, Ian, Harry Kane.
01:10:22Can you just nail down for everybody at home?
01:10:24Having equalised at 1-1,
01:10:26why were England unable to
01:10:28take advantage of what seemed to be
01:10:30a momentum shift?
01:10:32What you need,
01:10:34you do need
01:10:36a forward who's in...
01:10:38Obviously, you want to be in good form.
01:10:40You want to be sharp. We don't know what's happened to Harry.
01:10:42Hopefully, it's not an injury
01:10:44he's got, but he doesn't look sharp.
01:10:46We didn't have, at any stage during this
01:10:48tournament, in the games that he started,
01:10:50a focal point.
01:10:52Whether he's playing well enough, whether he
01:10:54can keep the ball at the top of us, we could not
01:10:56keep the ball in an area where we could
01:10:58keep the pressure on the opposition,
01:11:00and I think that waiting for an
01:11:02hour to maybe bring somebody on
01:11:04is a lot of pressure on whoever's
01:11:06got to come on and try to do it.
01:11:08And Gary, at 1-1, was it just the Spanish who went,
01:11:10OK, they feel they may be on top.
01:11:12That's the way that we draw their stick.
01:11:14Absolutely, Mark.
01:11:16I think we played quite well just after
01:11:181-1 for a couple of minutes, and all of a sudden
01:11:20the game just swung back again, but that's
01:11:22the sign of a really top team because that's
01:11:24hard to do. Trust me, to get control
01:11:26of a game where you think a team are coming at you
01:11:28and obviously they score a goal, we thought
01:11:30at that point, probably all of us, that Spain
01:11:32had missed chances, England get a goal,
01:11:34but honestly they proved what a fantastic team
01:11:36they were when they got back in the game
01:11:38the way they did. But we shouldn't be surprised by the spirit
01:11:40of the Spanish. We saw against Germany, they
01:11:42conceded the last-minute equaliser in Germany
01:11:44against Germany, and the rest of that back by
01:11:46winning the last minute of extra time.
01:11:48So it should be no surprise
01:11:50that the Spanish are capable of wrestling the game back
01:11:52and getting that momentum back into their own game.
01:11:54And it was just a brilliant bit of quality.
01:11:56As we say, just their belief in their own
01:11:58game. OK, they feel they're on top.
01:12:00We'll keep the ball for a bit, and then we can
01:12:02reassert ourselves in terms of...
01:12:04They never lost heart.
01:12:06I thought Luke Shaw
01:12:08and Kyle Walker done very well
01:12:10against their wingers, but their wingers kept doing what they
01:12:12do. We saw
01:12:14Jamal come inside,
01:12:16when it weren't going for him outside,
01:12:18he came inside, got involved and made things happen.
01:12:20You change, you adapt,
01:12:22you adapt, you go again.
01:12:24It was that once we played against a really top
01:12:26team, that this would happen.
01:12:28Yeah, he's young player of the tournament.
01:12:30Jamal is the young player. So congratulations.
01:12:32What a 17th birthday present.
01:12:34The trophy and a win. Fantastic.
01:12:36And he thoroughly deserves it. He scored that
01:12:38wonderful goal, didn't he, against the French?
01:12:40Well, it might be.
01:12:42That's the King of Spain giving him a hug.
01:12:44Gareth Southgate.
01:12:46I said about the players looking at the top
01:12:48of the mountain. He must think, have I really
01:12:50got it within me to go again
01:12:52and try and win the World Cup? First to qualify
01:12:54and then win the World Cup in the USA.
01:12:56I think that's a big question.
01:12:58Something doesn't feel and sit right inside
01:13:00me talking about Gareth's future right now
01:13:02because of what he's done in the last six
01:13:04or seven years. But I would think
01:13:06he'll take a long, hard look in this next week
01:13:08and so I wonder whether it's now the right time.
01:13:10The sentiment during this tournament
01:13:12has been tough for him at times. I think he's been
01:13:14sort of, he's called it an unusual environment
01:13:16earlier on in the competition and he knows about
01:13:18this and Rodri is one player of the tournament, which is
01:13:20fully deserved as well.
01:13:22Rodri, player of the tournament, of course.
01:13:24Rodri's lost one match going back
01:13:26to March 2023, as we said, which is the
01:13:28FA Cup final, which just shows what
01:13:30a magnificent player he is and they played the second half without him.
01:13:32Yeah, again,
01:13:34the strength of the Spanish
01:13:36squad, shall we say. He wasn't really missed,
01:13:38was he, in the second half? No, he wasn't.
01:13:40I remember thinking, what a huge loss
01:13:42and that's what the squad of players does. If you get
01:13:44on with it, you don't miss that type of player.
01:13:46You must have some good players coming through.
01:13:48I'm not going to go on lots
01:13:50about Gareth Southgate. Suffice to say,
01:13:52if he wants to step down, that is his own choice,
01:13:54his own village. He's done a fantastic
01:13:56job. Nobody on the FA have said as much.
01:13:58I'm going to ask him. He's earned the right to do
01:14:00what he wants to do. Absolutely.
01:14:02It is what he wants to do,
01:14:04having taken England so far
01:14:06that they cannot quite get over the line.
01:14:08Spain, for the fourth time in the
01:14:10men's game, have won the European Championship.
01:14:12A penny for his thoughts. I'm sure we'll hear from him.
01:14:14He always fronts up, always talks to Gabriel
01:14:16and we'll get the thoughts of Gareth Southgate
01:14:18later after this 2-1
01:14:20defeat for England against Spain.
01:14:22Referees going up next, I have to say, I thought the referees
01:14:24did a good job on the big stage, don't you think?
01:14:26Yes, he tried to let the game flow.
01:14:28I think the three teams, including
01:14:30the officials, did a good job. Yes, absolutely.
01:14:32We didn't notice them too much. That's always a good sign
01:14:34that they have done what
01:14:36they were supposed to do.
01:14:38Okay, it's Spain's evening.
01:14:40It's bitter disappointment for England
01:14:42and in a moment we
01:14:44will see Spain raising the European
01:14:46Championship trophy and we'll go back to Sam
01:14:48Matterface for that.
01:14:50He is the youngest ever
01:14:52referee to take charge of a European
01:14:54final. And alongside
01:14:56his assistant Cyril
01:14:58Mounier
01:15:00and Mehdi Ramouni.
01:15:04Fourth official, Simon Marciniak.
01:15:06He picks up the
01:15:08medal for commemoration of taking
01:15:10charge of a major tournament final.
01:15:12Alexander Seferin, the UEFA president
01:15:14doing the duties alongside the UEFA
01:15:16General Secretary.
01:15:18Pedro Rocha from the Spanish FA.
01:15:20Debbie Hewitt is involved
01:15:22as well.
01:15:24And King Felipe of Spain.
01:15:28England about to come up in the next
01:15:30few moments.
01:15:34I mentioned about the England age group teams
01:15:36having success. There's a lot of parallels
01:15:38with Spain. Luis de la Fuente
01:15:40won with the Spanish under-19s,
01:15:42the Spanish under-21s
01:15:44for the silver medal at the Olympics.
01:15:46Now he has led them to their
01:15:48first major trophy
01:15:50in 12 years at a senior
01:15:52men's level.
01:15:54Spanish teams
01:15:56just don't lose
01:15:58major finals.
01:16:00But England have lost two.
01:16:02It is another
01:16:04now familiar tale of England
01:16:06watching on as the opponent that has
01:16:08their hopes and dreams goes up to get
01:16:10the winners' medals and the trophy
01:16:12that they crave. But they know
01:16:14that Spain have won.
01:16:16They have won it.
01:16:18Rather than England have lost it.
01:16:20Yeah, absolutely.
01:16:22We said all along we think this
01:16:24Spanish team is going to go deep in the tournament.
01:16:26They look the most excited.
01:16:28The print really well organised
01:16:30at the back. We're not sure whether they've
01:16:32been tested enough at the back.
01:16:34But they've all come through. Cucurello
01:16:36who we've questioned before
01:16:38has been outstanding in this tournament
01:16:40at left back. Questions about him
01:16:42tonight. About Saka
01:16:44and what he was going to do to him.
01:16:46He played a really good game, put that ball
01:16:48in to win the game
01:16:50for Spain. But they have been the best
01:16:52team. And they've got an exciting
01:16:54youth about them that
01:16:56is only to be admired.
01:16:58And something that
01:17:00we look at with envy when we see how they
01:17:02play. And that's what England
01:17:04have to aspire to.
01:17:06That excitement, that drive.
01:17:08They've got the drive and the hunger.
01:17:10It's just matching it all together with that
01:17:12top quality and the ability to
01:17:14be able to put it all into
01:17:16one game and get over
01:17:18this line. The line that's been the one
01:17:20that they've struggled.
01:17:22And it's sad. It's a sad day for them.
01:17:24But they'll, as Roy said,
01:17:26just got to get on with it.
01:17:28Prince William is there to
01:17:30apply the commiserations. It is a
01:17:32tough game. They do have to get over it.
01:17:34But some of these players might not get a chance
01:17:36again to play in a major final.
01:17:38No, that's very true.
01:17:40And it will hurt.
01:17:42There's no getting away from it. It will hurt.
01:17:44I would imagine the rest of the summer.
01:17:46They'll look back and they'll think, what if
01:17:48that sport, that's particularly football,
01:17:50finals. The one thing you've got
01:17:52to back up is saying
01:17:54you're looking at a Spanish team that have
01:17:56beaten Italy, Germany,
01:17:58France, England
01:18:00and have won seven games in the tournament.
01:18:02Now, I happen to think that's quite
01:18:04remarkable to tell you the truth.
01:18:06And they've done it by
01:18:08overcoming mishaps. Pedri,
01:18:10Iosif Perez, who couldn't take part tonight.
01:18:12Gabi, who you saw a shot of earlier, is out of the squad
01:18:14because of the injury
01:18:18that he sustained. He's here to support the squad.
01:18:20And he, like
01:18:22his manager
01:18:24and King Felipe, would have
01:18:26watched on as they beat Croatia,
01:18:28Italy, Albania, Georgia, Germany
01:18:30and France. They only conceded four goals
01:18:32at the tournament. It's a stellar list
01:18:34and they deserve it.
01:18:38And they've overcome a couple of years of upheaval
01:18:40really. A decade which
01:18:42has been a barren one for Spanish
01:18:44national team football.
01:18:46Luis Enrique's reign
01:18:48enveloped in tragedy.
01:18:50World Cup dejection after
01:18:52Euro's promise.
01:18:54They were the surprise team to be knocked
01:18:56by Morocco. A change
01:18:58in the dugout to the
01:19:00unheralded Luis De La Fuente
01:19:02promoted from the youth ranks and then
01:19:04this Nations League
01:19:06and European Championship
01:19:08back to back.
01:19:10They've done it with
01:19:12some younger members
01:19:14of the Spanish football elite
01:19:16but there is a link to the past as well
01:19:18as Pedri
01:19:20and Yamal and Williams
01:19:2239-year-old
01:19:24Jesus Navas, the last remaining
01:19:26of the old great Spain teams
01:19:28of the last decade
01:19:30at the back of that queue
01:19:32and there's no doubt
01:19:34that
01:19:36they are
01:19:38in possession
01:19:40of an exciting future and some young
01:19:42exciting talent that has
01:19:44really burst onto the scene.
01:19:46Well, you look
01:19:48at the talent we saw tonight, not just
01:19:50you know, from both sides
01:19:52effectively. Youngsters coming
01:19:54through. It's been a fabulous
01:19:56ending to the tournament I would suggest
01:19:58guys. I thought it was a little bit of a slow
01:20:00bummer, slow start. You speak for yourself.
01:20:02Yeah, I know
01:20:04and I can feel your disappointment guys
01:20:06and obviously
01:20:08I know how the lads
01:20:10will be feeling but at the same time
01:20:12we saw some magical
01:20:14football particularly in the knockout
01:20:16stages for me of the tournament
01:20:18and some of the young guys, Yamal, Williams
01:20:20Menou, boys like that
01:20:22it's been superb. It really has
01:20:24as I say, a little bit slow to get going
01:20:26knockout stages of them.
01:20:28Luis de la Fuente becomes
01:20:30the first coach to have won the Euro
01:20:32at under 19, level under 21
01:20:34and now the senior category.
01:20:36He called on his team to embrace the moment
01:20:38but Spain
01:20:40are going into the top tier of European
01:20:42winners. The hope was
01:20:44that Berlin was going to be white but
01:20:46Spain have quite
01:20:48differently painted
01:20:50the town red.
01:20:56Alvaro Morata, the captain
01:20:58lifts the trophy
01:21:00into the sky and
01:21:02Spain are European
01:21:04champions for a record
01:21:06fourth time.
01:21:10The best team at the tournament
01:21:12the top scorers at the
01:21:14tournament are the champions
01:21:16of the tournament.
01:21:36Plenty more to come from us
01:21:38here in Berlin. We'll hear from Gareth
01:21:40Southgate and we'll also catch up with
01:21:42Gajska Medveta and get his
01:21:44thoughts on Spain's
01:21:462-1 win against England here at the
01:21:48Olympic Stadium. Back in a moment.
