Wait, did you see that? Rewind it! Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for those movie moments that had the audience hitting those rewind and pause buttons just to confirm what they were seeing.
Transcript
00:00I've always had a fondness for white silk scarves. They're good for all occasions.
00:04Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for those movie
00:09moments that had the audience hitting those rewind and pause buttons
00:13just to confirm what they were seeing.
00:18Number 30. Car Wash. Cool Hand Luke.
00:21There's just something about a beautiful woman washing a car that has always been,
00:25and will always be, appealing.
00:28Whether it's Paris Hilton in a Carl's Jr. commercial,
00:31or Cameron Diaz in Bad Teacher, we can't help but be drawn in by all that sex appeal.
00:36As true as that is today, it was also true back in 1967 when Cool Hand Luke hit theaters.
00:48If the prisoners on that chain gang had a pause button,
00:51there's no doubt they would have used it. And the same goes for the movie.
00:54There's no doubt they would have used it.
00:56And the same goes for audiences in the intervening five-plus decades.
01:01Oh boy, she knows exactly what she's doing. She's driving us crazy and loving every minute of it.
01:06Number 29. The Map. Iron Man 2.
01:09Beginning with Iron Man in 2008, the MCU has been a blockbuster series,
01:14dominating the cinematic zeitgeist for over 15 years. One of the reasons was that,
01:19from very early on, the franchise created a specific and intricate roadmap of films
01:24and characters.
01:25Who the hell are you?
01:28Nick Fury. Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.
01:31Huh.
01:32A roadmap made partially available to audiences in an awesome Easter egg from 2010's Iron Man 2.
01:38The scene in question involves a meeting between Tony Stark and Nick Fury.
01:43I don't think I want you looking at that. I'm not sure it pertains to you anymore.
01:48While their conversation is important to the film,
01:50it's a map in the background that caught many fans' attention.
01:54As it sneakily indicates numerous areas the MCU would get to in the coming years,
01:59from Captain America to Wakanda.
02:01Wakanda forever!
02:04Number 28. A Delicious Breeze. The Seven-Year Itch.
02:08Yes, two years prior to the release of The Seven-Year Itch in 1953,
02:12there were nude photos of Marilyn Monroe published in the first issue of Playboy magazine.
02:17However, that didn't stop audiences from wanting to pause her dress flying up in the aforementioned
02:22film.
02:23Oh, do you feel the breeze from the subway?
02:26Isn't it delicious?
02:27To see if maybe the camera panned down just a moment late,
02:30and if anything more than Monroe's beautiful naked legs were ever visible.
02:34Here comes another one!
02:36It would be decades before the technology was available for us to pause said moment,
02:40but once it was...
02:42Well?
02:43My faith in the integrity of American advertising is somewhat restored.
02:47You see?
02:48Number 27. The Vanisher. Deadpool 2.
02:51If you go to Brad Pitt's IMDb page,
02:54you'll see he has an acting credit for 2018's Deadpool 2.
02:58I just want to say how proud I am of this team.
03:00This may come as a surprise to some folks who saw the film,
03:03but can't remember seeing Pitt in it.
03:05Well, he was. Very briefly.
03:07Remember when Deadpool and his band of misfit super-folks jump out of the plane?
03:11One of those skydiving superhumans is the Vanisher,
03:14who is invisible for most of his time on screen.
03:17Vanisher!
03:18Maybe the wind can't blow what it can't see.
03:21That is, until he parachutes into electrical wires and is shocked to death.
03:25Shocking many an audience member when his face is very briefly revealed as Brad Pitt.
03:32Really?
03:33Number 26. Wayne Enterprises. Man of Steel.
03:36While everyone knows that director Christopher Nolan rebooted the Batman series in the 2000s,
03:42some may have forgotten that he was involved in the reboot of another superhero.
03:45What's the S stand for?
03:46It's not an S. On my world it means hope.
03:57Well, here it's an S.
04:00Nolan was a producer on 2013's Man of Steel,
04:03and also developed the story with screenwriter David S. Goyer.
04:06But while this movie was a Superman reboot,
04:09that didn't stop them from getting a little Batman reference in there.
04:12We don't know if it was Nolan's idea or not,
04:14but when Superman is fighting in space,
04:16there just happens to be a satellite with the Wayne Enterprises logo on it.
04:26We smell a crossover. A highly divisive crossover.
04:30Number 25. The Red Bikini. Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
04:34While there are undoubtedly many women who have worn red bikinis,
04:38to anyone who came of age in the early 1980s, there's really only one that matters.
04:45That is, of course, Phoebe Cates in 1982's Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
04:51Hi Brad. You know how cute I always thought you were.
04:55Director Cameron Crowe helped all of the audience members and their raging hormones
04:59get a better look by giving them a slow-mo view of Cate's bikini-clad bod.
05:04There's no denying all of the VHS pause buttons that got a workout
05:07when she undoes the bikini top in Brad's fantasized scenario.
05:12Number 24. The Cameraman. The Matrix.
05:15Have you ever wondered how they get shots in movies with reflective surfaces
05:18without the cameraman being seen? Well the truth is they don't always.
05:22Try not to think of it in terms of right and wrong.
05:25Sometimes the guy filming the scene actually ends up in the shot,
05:28as was the case with the I can only show you the door shot in The Matrix.
05:32I told you I can only show you the door. You have to walk through it.
05:36It happens pretty fast, so without pausing it's easy to miss.
05:40But freeze the frame and there he is. Sure he's covered in a coat and a tie
05:45that matches what Morpheus is wearing in an attempt to camouflage as much as possible,
05:50but they can't hide that camera lens.
05:52Number 23. Spit in Food.
05:55Anchorman. The Legend of Ron Burgundy.
05:57If like Ron Burgundy you don't speak Spanish,
06:00then you most likely missed this little gem of a joke the first time you saw Anchorman.
06:06Come again?
06:07You know I don't speak Spanish. In English please.
06:12However, for Baxter the Dog and all of the Spanish-speaking members of the audience,
06:16the restaurant name Escupimos en Su Alimento was probably quite LOL-inducing. No pausing needed.
06:23For the rest of us, it required a pause button and a couple of weeks of Duolingo or our Google
06:28Translate app to learn that Escupimos en Su Alimento means we spit in their food.
06:34Number 22. Jimmy Buffett Cameo.
06:37Jurassic World. This paused moment is what we like to call a two-for-one.
06:41Amongst all the action and destruction of people fleeing from the flying dinosaurs
06:46in Jurassic World, there's one man who stands out from the rest.
06:53At first, we all probably just paused this moment to confirm that, yes indeed,
06:57there was a guy who grabbed his two drinks before running. Right there,
07:01a guy more concerned with saving his drinks than himself is pause-worthy.
07:08But hold that pause screen a little longer and take a closer look,
07:11and you'll see that it isn't just any guy. That's Jimmy Buffett. And those aren't just
07:16any drinks either. Buffett is double-fisting two margaritas. Totally worth it.
07:25Number 21. Subliminal Demon Face.
07:28The Exorcist. Do you know what the demon that possessed Reagan in The Exorcist looks like?
07:33How long are you planning to stay in Reagan?
07:36Until she rots and lies stinking in here.
07:38If you've seen the film, then you do know, even if you don't think you do. That's because the
07:44face of the demon flashes on screen multiple times throughout the film, albeit for only
07:48about an eighth of a second each time. Sure.
07:51The amount of times it happens depends on what cut of the film you're watching.
07:55But while it's often easy to spot the image flash and be totally creeped out,
07:59the pause button is probably needed to really make out what the demon face truly looks like.
08:04Although be warned, once you've seen it, it isn't a face you'll be able to easily forget.
08:11Number 20. Where's Ron? Ghostbusters.
08:14This is it! This is the sign!
08:17Yeah, it's the sign, alright! Going out of business!
08:21Believe it or not, the stay-puffed Marshmallow Man isn't the most random
08:24character who pops up in this comedy classic. When our heroes are forced to
08:28shut down their protection grid, a horde of ghosts are released. As all hell breaks loose,
08:33numerous onlookers gather around the firehouse. If you've seen your fair share of adult films,
08:38one particular New Yorker might stand out.
08:41Sporting his signature mustache, adult film star Ron Jeremy gazes up with his mouth agape.
08:47Sprinkled amongst a crowd of extras, it's easy to miss the hedgehog.
08:50And you may need to zoom in to get a good look.
08:53Number 19. The Diggler. Boogie Nights.
08:57It's only fitting that we'd transition from Ron Jeremy to a film about the adult film industry.
09:02Jeremy didn't shed any skin in Ghostbusters,
09:05but the artist formerly known as Marky Mark bears all in Boogie Nights.
09:09I got a feeling beneath those jeans there's something wonderful just waiting to get out.
09:13Okay, not really.
09:14Nowadays, it's common knowledge among cinephiles that Mark Wahlberg's 13-inch
09:19penis was phony baloney. Back when the film was first released on home video, though,
09:23this scene had many pausing their TV sets to investigate the authenticity of Dirk Diggler's
09:28Diggler.
09:29This thing was like down past my knee.
09:31What makes this moment especially pause-worthy is that the size of his
09:35penis had been built up throughout the film, literally, ahem, teasing the audience.
09:40You know my reputation.
09:4213 inches is a tough load. I don't treat you gently.
09:45It isn't until the end that we're given a peek at his manhood in all of its prosthetic glory.
09:50Number 18. The Shield. Iron Man.
09:53Let's face it, this is not the worst thing you've caught me doing.
09:56When Nick Fury appeared in the post-credits scene for 2008's Iron Man,
10:00it became clear that this wasn't just the launching point for a potential trilogy,
10:04but an entire cinematic universe.
10:06Even before Fury showed up, there were signs that Marvel had bigger plans in mind.
10:11In Tony Stark's workshop, Captain America's incomplete shield resides on his desk.
10:15The star-spangled shield would make a more obvious appearance in Iron Man 2,
10:19and within the next year, Chris Evans made his cinematic debut as the first Avenger.
10:24Cap's shield was one of the first Easter eggs to foreshadow what Marvel had in store for us,
10:29demonstrating early on that no detail is too small in the MCU.
10:33Number 17. I'm Taller. Speed.
10:36Where's Paine?
10:39He lost his head.
10:40Speed more than lives up to its title, delivering high-octane thrills around every turn.
10:44The film is so fast-paced that you can't blame viewers for overlooking
10:48one of the most obviously fake decapitations in blockbuster history.
10:52Duking it out atop a subway train,
10:54it appears the villainous Paine has the upper hand over Jack Travon.
10:58I'm the guy with the plan, because I'm smart as ghosts.
11:01Paine enters a world of pain, however, when he's beheaded by an overhead light.
11:06Considering how Paine prides himself on being the smartest man in the room,
11:09this is an ironic way for him to go out,
11:11and Travon's cool one-liner only makes his demise more memorable.
11:18Yeah, well, I'm taller.
11:23When you rewind, slow down, and hit pause, though,
11:25it becomes increasingly apparent that Dennis Hopper has been replaced with a lifeless dummy.
11:30In an era where comedies generally played it safe with a PG-13 rating,
11:41There's Something About Mary went all out with the hard R humor.
11:51So when Ben Stiller's Ted gets his junk trapped in a zipper,
11:54the filmmakers don't refrain from giving us an up-close-and-all-too-personal look.
12:00Based on how the characters describe this ghastly sight,
12:05the audience is able to paint a graphic picture in their heads,
12:08but whatever you're imagining can't prepare you for the real deal.
12:15Like a train wreck, you simply can't look away from the veiny bubble popping out of Ted's trousers.
12:20Even after we hit the pause button,
12:22it's hard to tell how Ted managed to get his beans over his Frank.
12:27Perhaps we're better off not knowing.
12:30Number 15.
12:31Roller Undercarriage
12:32V for Vendetta
12:36In David Lloyd and Alan Moore's original graphic novel,
12:39a couple of panels find protagonist Evie in the nude.
12:42Natalie Portman didn't go topless for the 2005 screen adaptation,
12:46but the movie did deliver a little fan service for eagle-eyed viewers.
12:50In order to assassinate a clergyman-slash-predator, V sends Evie in to seduce him.
12:55Although she tries to warn the bishop,
12:57he fails to catch on and gets kicked in his frankincense.
13:06As Evie rolls off the bed to escape,
13:08there's an ever-so-brief glimpse of what she's wearing underneath.
13:12Number 14.
13:13Thong – The Backup Plan
13:15Jennifer Lopez's butt has essentially become part of her brand,
13:19and it's seemingly on full display in this romantic comedy.
13:23Playing a woman who finds true love after being artificially inseminated,
13:26Lopez observes her changing body in the mirror.
13:29Assuming you weren't watching the film with your significant other,
13:32there's little doubt that you rewound and pause
13:34to further examine Jen's curvy rear in a thong.
13:43As Lopez revealed in an interview,
13:45she actually had a body double stand in for her.
13:47Lopez claims it was her idea to include this scene, saying,
13:50quote,
13:51We should have a real pregnant lady double do it.
13:53Oh well, it's not like you can't see J.Lo's legendary booty elsewhere.
13:57Number 13.
13:58Topless Frames – The Rescuers
14:06At first glance, The Rescuers is another innocent family romp from the House of Mouse.
14:10When the film was released on home video for the second time in 1999, however,
14:15attentive viewers noticed something a tad risque about this G-rated flick.
14:19Hitching a ride on the Orville,
14:20Bernard and Bianca fly past the image of a topless lady in the New York background.
14:25Of course, you'd never spot the scantily clad woman unless you paused with perfect precision.
14:29Chances are we'll never know who was responsible for sneaking this bit of nudity into the film.
14:34All we know is that Disney had to recall over 3 million videos to correct the controversy.
14:39Number 12.
14:40Legendary Cameo – Man of Steel
14:43Christopher Reeves sadly didn't live long enough to see Henry Cavill assume the mantle of Superman.
14:48This 2013 film does feature a symbolic passing of the torch though,
14:52which also serves as a tribute to the actor who originally made us believe a man could fly.
15:02As General Zod plots to terraform the planet, Clark Kent transforms right before our eyes.
15:07Skyrocketing towards the world engine,
15:09Reeves' face begins to shine through, if only for a fleeting instant.
15:13Being faster than a speeding bullet,
15:15you'll need to pause to catch Reeves briefly taking over Cavill's face.
15:19Let's just be grateful it's more seamless than Cavill's removed mustache in Justice League.
15:32Number 11.
15:34Mrs. Robinson – The Graduate
15:38This scene is intended to be sexy and uncomfortable all at once.
15:41Director Mike Nichols achieves this through clever editing
15:44that puts the audience in Benjamin Braddock's shoes.
15:47Making it clear that she's indeed trying to seduce Benjamin,
15:50we get a glimpse of a naked Mrs. Robinson in the reflection of her daughter Elaine's photograph.
15:56Standing right in front of her, Benjamin does his best to avert his eyes,
16:00but ultimately catches a couple of peeks of the topless Mrs. Robinson.
16:04These bits of nudity fly by so quickly that the audience may second guess what they just saw.
16:12With the ability to pause the film however,
16:21you can see clearly everything that Mrs. Robinson was offering.
16:25Number 10.
16:26Horror History – The Cabin in the Woods
16:35This whole movie is basically a love letter to the horror genre,
16:38packing in both subtle and blatant references everywhere.
16:42Unless you're a speedy reader, a pause button is necessary to fully appreciate this scene.
16:47Betting on what will plague the titular cabin,
16:49an underground organization lists a series of monsters on a whiteboard.
16:53In addition to obvious creatures like zombies, vampires, and mummies,
16:57the board also includes more obscure creatures like dismemberment goblins, snowmen, and mermen.
17:03Evil Dad even gets a couple shout-outs with deadites and an angry tree present.
17:10There's one particular name on the board that remains clouded in mystery though.
17:14Who exactly is Kevin?
17:16Is he from We Need to Talk About Kevin or a slasher version of Home Alone?
17:23Number 9.
17:24Extra from an Extra – Teen Wolf
17:26When a film stars Michael J. Fox as a teenager who transforms into a basketball-playing werewolf,
17:31you can expect to see some bizarre imagery.
17:34The film's strangest moment, however, apparently wasn't even intentional.
17:37In the end, Scott Howard wins the big game, shares a passionate kiss with Booth,
17:42and they all live happily…
17:43Whoa, wait a second.
17:44Is that an Extra's fly down?
17:51Contrary to what Family Guy will tell you,
17:53it turns out the Extra in the crowd isn't a guy,
17:56but a woman whose face can be seen in the film's full-frame version.
17:59Christina Haggerty, another Teen Wolf Extra,
18:02provided further insight into this wardrobe malfunction,
18:05suggesting that the women's pants were probably unzipped or unbuttoned because they were too tight.
18:10Number 8.
18:11Commando Cartoons
18:12Who framed Roger Rabbit?
18:19Jessica Rabbit could be a playboy bunny,
18:21and not just because her husband is a literal rabbit.
18:23This cartoon dame is one of the most overtly sexual temptresses ever put to paper,
18:28so much so that she might have snuck her private parts past the censors.
18:35When the film was released on Laserdisc,
18:37reports surfaced that Jessica can be spotted going Commando when she's flung out of Benny the Cab.
18:42At 24 film frames per second, this moment goes by in a flash, and in more ways than one.
18:48Although this scene has been paused time after time,
18:50it's still heavily debated if Jessica really exposed herself.
18:53In any case, the scene was altered in future releases to avoid further controversy.
18:59Number 7.
19:00Give Up the Ghost
19:01Three Men and a Baby
19:04There are several movies that supposedly experienced paranormal activity on set,
19:08but you wouldn't expect Three Men and a Baby to be one of them.
19:20In what seems like a pleasant scene between Ted Danson,
19:22his mother, and his infant daughter, a mysterious figure is visible in the background.
19:29As if that's not eerie enough,
19:30a rumor surfaced that a nine-year-old boy took his own life in the house
19:33where the film was shot years earlier.
19:35There's actually a reasonable explanation for all of this.
19:39The image in the window is just a Ted Danson cutout,
19:42and the scene was really shot on a soundstage.
19:54Considering that Leonard Nimoy directed the film, though,
19:56you can't blame people for wanting to believe something supernatural was afoot.
20:01Number 6.
20:02The Munchkin Hanging – The Wizard of Oz
20:04As Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Man set out to meet the wizard,
20:08an unidentified munchkin prepares to meet his maker.
20:11At least, that's how the urban legend goes.
20:14According to an age-old rumor,
20:15this otherwise cheerful musical number features a munchkin
20:18hanging himself between some trees in the background.
20:20The scene had conspiracy theorists everywhere pausing their TVs
20:24until the film received a remastered release,
20:26revealing that the silhouette was really a stork stretching its wings out.
20:30Yet, some continue to argue that the bird was merely edited into later versions as a cover-up.
20:35Could there be something more sinister going on behind the emerald curtain?
20:39Number 5.
20:40Secret Surprises – Tron
20:43Disney is known for working hidden Mickeys into their movies,
20:46causing audiences to constantly freeze-frame.
20:48One of the most elusive examples can be found in this 1982 sci-fi adventure.
20:53In most cases, hidden Mickeys are subtly integrated into the background.
20:57This one, however, practically engulfs the entire screen as the solar sailor flies by.
21:02You'd think this would be easy to spot,
21:04but Mickey's distinctive mouse ears would evade most people if it weren't for the pause button.
21:08Mickey isn't the only one who makes a cameo,
21:10as Pac-Man somehow wandered out of his maze and into the grid.
21:14It's a shame Wreck-It Ralph wasn't around,
21:16since he happens to know both Tron and Pac-Man.
21:23Cut it!
21:24Number 4.
21:25Disney debauchery – The Lion King
21:27Ever wonder what those sparkly dots are up there?
21:31If you thought Can You Feel the Love Tonight had sexual undertones,
21:35be prepared to have your mind blown.
21:43Collapsing by a cliff,
21:44Simba releases a cloud of dust that appears to spell out the letters S-E and X.
21:49Hey, when you're a growing lion without a mate,
21:51you're bound to have some pent-up sexual frustration.
21:54To be fair, Disney animator Tom Saito claims it actually spells out SFX
21:59in reference to the special effects crew.
22:01You can pause the scene all you want,
22:03but there will likely never be a definitive answer
22:05as to whether this is just a case of sloppy penmanship,
22:08or if Simba is sending a subliminal message about his animalistic urges.
22:12Number 3.
22:13A headbangin' good time – Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope
22:17Star Wars is one of those films that audiences can continually rewatch
22:21without ever growing tired of it.
22:22The same can be said about this scene, which has given countless fans pause.
22:26Entering a room with a squad,
22:28a clumsy stormtrooper bumps his head on the door above.
22:32The head-bumping stormtrooper is so infamous
22:34that he even has his own Wikipedia page.
22:37George Lucas even decided to embrace this happy accident,
22:40amplifying the sound effect for the film's 2004 DVD re-release
22:44and paying homage to the scene in Attack of the Clones
22:46when Jango Fett bumps his head.
22:50Considering that stormtroopers are clones of Jango,
22:52we guess their head-bumping habit is hereditary.
22:55Their lack of spatial awareness may also explain why they never hit their targets.
22:59Number 2.
23:00Brad Pitt flashes – Fight Club – In this cult classic,
23:04Edward Norton's narrator mentions that Tyler Durden
23:06likes to sneak his own contributions into movies
23:09while working as a projectionist.
23:11That's when you'll catch a flash of Tyler's contribution to the film.
23:14It appears Tyler also had some fun in the editing room for this movie
23:17as he splices himself into four scenes before properly introducing himself.
23:22Nobody knows that they saw it, but they did.
23:24In addition to these subliminal frames,
23:26Tyler is also present in a TV ad dressed as a waiter,
23:29which could be alluding to his other job peeing into soup at a hotel.
23:33Ingeniously foreshadowing Tyler's true identity,
23:36moments like these demonstrate why Fight Club merits repeated viewings,
23:39with the remote on standby.
23:41Even a hummingbird couldn't catch Tyler at work.

24:00Sexy double-cross – Basic Instinct
24:14Audiences were completely caught off guard when Catherine Tramiel exposed her nether regions,
24:26and apparently, so was Sharon Stone.
24:28The actress claimed she originally wore underwear for the steamy interrogation scene,
24:33but complied with director Paul Verhoeven's request to take them off.
24:36Stone assumed the nudity would be simply hinted at
24:39until she saw the film with a test audience.
24:41Although Verhoeven has denied these accusations,
24:44Stone allegedly slapped him for misleading her.
24:47In any case, the final product forever solidified Catherine's status as the ultimate femme fatale.
24:52While Catherine's dialogue is mostly comprised of seductive one-liners,
24:55it's her crossed legs that do all the talking here.
24:59As one of the raciest moments ever filmed,
25:01it's only natural that this would also be the most paused.
