00:14Bukit Gelugor MP Ram Kapral Singh said, despite Teri Rudin's competence and the set precedent

00:18for the appointment of a former AG as a federal court judge, it was a great concern that an

00:23outsider could be considered for a senior judicial post ahead of judges who are more

00:27qualified.

00:29The former Deputy Law and Institutional Reform Minister was responding to reports that Teri

00:33Rudin may be appointed a federal court judge and eventually be made CJM, the third-highest

00:38post in the judicial hierarchy.

00:40He said there are qualified candidates among current federal court judges to fill the post

00:44of CJM, and that recommendations have been made by the Judicial Appointments Committee

00:48chaired by Chief Justice Tengku Maimuntuanmai.

00:51Ram Kapral questioned whether the current government should follow precedents set by

00:54previous administrations given its commitment to judicial reforms.

00:59He argued that the precedents should be abandoned to avoid the perception of government interference

01:03in senior judge appointments, which are ultimately made on the prime minister's advice under

01:07Article 122B of the federal constitution.
