00:00Counter-attack and and you know England are England have played a kicking game and kept in the game with a kicking game
00:07But at the end CJ it was I mean England were very close to scoring a try right at the end of the game
00:12So well done to Northern Hemisphere teams that they've they're closing the gap fast
00:16The England's you can see Felix Jones is a bit of a flare coming in and defensive
00:21Well, I think that's what kept them in the game
00:23They England just kept on playing a key game and kept Australia. Sorry New Zealand out of it and Barrett coming in
00:28I think that was a big difference and that's what the the score points showed it then right as well
00:32There's no Australian action Joe Smith. So start is all beating Wales disappointing stuff. What's happening down and in Wales
00:39I think yeah, just no not convincing. I think they haven't won much I think from the World Cup
00:52We need us we need a good Australian right the Union team I think over the years when Australia is good
00:57You know, you've got to turn up
00:59And then now at the moment they need to turn that corner because the last couple years just hasn't been convinced
01:03The one thing about I'm so happy for Joe Smith, you know going there
01:07I think he was probably the only guy who's gonna turn around
01:09He's a guy who plays with structure and I think that's what Australia needed
01:12They want they needed someone to come and say right this is what we're gonna do. This is what I'm gonna make us win
01:17Yes, they're not playing the Australian rugby that we used to spring the ball
01:21But they're playing those small margins and obviously well, it's probably not the base of position
01:25But we need a strong Australia. We definitely do we look at the first two tries one came from a box kick
01:30which was recovered, you know to
01:33Contestable which bounced favorably for Gordon. He scored a try and the other one was really good by Hathaway
01:38he saw space at the back and chipped and courted himself hundred meter try but
01:44There's not a lot of difference between these two teams at the moment. They're down in sixth seventh eighth place
01:49So I still think that that you know on the world stage
01:54you've got South Africa at the top and you've got Ireland and France and
01:59and I think England and New Zealand all
02:02Very dangerous all capable of beating each other and us on on a day when things go well for them
02:07Nick let this be some insights
02:08I mean you coach at a national level at on the Southern Hemisphere and the Northern Hemisphere with actually and the Springboks the debate
02:15Again, the Northern Hemisphere teams coming to the end of their season. Are they tired?
02:20What's the story because last week it was the Southern Hemisphere that dominated?
02:23I mean, I think Scotland play someone like Spain. Yeah, it doesn't matter. I mean France was the only team that won in Argentina
02:30Again, what is the mindset? What is it like end of year for Northern Hemisphere team national size and us?
02:36Is that debate still there? I don't think so. I think I think that
02:40The quality of the national teams that are coming out. They're not sending B teams down there
02:45You know in the past the clubs used to run the contracts of the players and they said no
02:49No, we're gonna rest our player
02:50So, I mean I had the good fortune as a springboard coach of coaching against a Welsh team
02:54that we put 90 odd points against them, you know, it's they sent a second dish third team and
03:01It was it in at Loftus and they just it was like playing a club side. So I think now
03:08Island coming out here
03:09They came out with the same objective and that was to win the series like they managed to do against New Zealand a couple of
03:15Years ago, so it's much much tougher now than it was then it was in my time
03:21And and and I think that also the fact that you're getting coaches from Southern Hemisphere going and coaching over there
03:28Well, I spoke about it last week you you when you come down to South Africa, Australia
03:32We travel there a few times you want to go in when a series that is the ultimate goal because you want to go test
03:36Yourself against the best of the best and to win there, you know, you need to be at your best
03:40So if in fairness to the Northern Hemisphere teams, they started getting contracts central contracts to at the Union
03:46So the Union then decide who's rested and who's being played
03:49So as soon as you get two or three weeks before the playoffs you start seeing senior players getting rested and and that that mindset
03:58Goes into the that, you know
04:00Then when you arrive for for those test series that you need to be at your best
04:03But in saying that you said it earlier we spoke about it is a 12 month season at the moment
04:09So the URC has created to a sudden South African teams and I'll playing in the same league really isn't on them
04:15It's your team. So everyone is at the same level
04:17I just think Ireland has been playing the same team for week in and week out since since well
04:24Since the World Cup and the incident monster, so they have played a little bit more
04:28But I think now again, they had a great run in lofters
04:31There's a few new guys coming for Irish side for for injury. So there'll be a bit of freshness in that side
04:37I talk about lofters CJ last weekend. It is the Springboks were victorious by seven points 20 points to 27 points to 20
04:45Big debates post reviewing this match Nick people talk about innovation and springbok attack. Did you see it as a thing?
04:52Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely. We wouldn't have done this in
04:56You know certainly in 2018-2019
04:59Definitely not we've seen it from maybe a vallee-le-roo, but not from the first phase attack. Were you seeing the ball guard and
05:06See a 2-2 loose forwards see and Peter's Peter step to toy playing out in the wide channels and running I mean
05:13We're having teething problems
05:15We've we had lots of turnovers. We had a few passes were forced, but we did create many more opportunities than we usually do so
05:23There was a typical try by Colby, which is chasing the 1% you know charge on kick in the World Cup and then
05:31Chasing a possible ball that was flicked inside by low
05:34I mean extraordinary extraordinary that this guy has the mental strength to to literally chase lost causes
05:40You know and it's work for him and CJ Island never went away
05:43But I mean Nick talks about the 1% how was that crowd the national anthem?
05:49I mean it was just something else we spoke about uniting, you know
05:51And looking at that anthem is probably the first time what I've heard
05:55Saying straight through as loud as everyone can if they put off the mic there we probably could have heard in studio for sure
06:02And that is special and that is special about this country
06:04You know, we and I said rugby unites people and it's great to see lofters getting that game
06:09And then today the Hollywood Spit Park will probably bring up another level. I forget it yet today
06:14we're probably in trouble, but I don't think my ear can make it but
06:18It's it lifts the players
06:20100% lifts the players and brings a lot of excitement even for the touring side
06:23All right, even for the touring side rugby unites people. Let's unite ourselves right here with you at home and the guys in Durban
06:30And Yanni Schumachie, it'll take us through what you expect from the guys in Durban
06:36Finally, we're here. It's a fantastic day. The crowds coming in everyone's outside having a bit of a bright

13:43Durban Country Club the magnificent Moses Mbita Stadium and the rugby venue
13:48Affectionately known as the shark tank. They used to be the banana boys black and white and dynamite
13:55Under the watchful eye of the late great Mac the Sharks played a dazzling brand of winning rugby
14:01In what world do you see players mingling with fans and family just hours after battle of the 36?
14:09Springbok tests at this venue one stands out above the rest on their way to the
14:151995 World Cup triumph the box survived the French and a semi-final mud bath on this patch
14:21the world champions have also won in more pleasant conditions including their last two tests against Argentina and
14:29So on to today's second test against the Irish
14:33They met here once before a lifetime ago in 1981
14:37And if last week's battle at Loftus is anything to go by there'll be little love lost this afternoon
14:43Drama desperation and a dollop of Dublin in the Durban sunshine
14:55In what world is all that spell delight for the rugby connoisseur you ask?
15:03The world of champions, of course
15:05The stadium feature is proudly brought to you by every Sam proud partner to the springboks
15:14There it is the clock is ticking for the second test match between the world champions and
15:19Second-ranked team the six-nation champions Ireland and also Andy Farrell makes his way with his team inside a King's Park
15:28Doris Cailin Doris CJ. He's been good outstanding player
15:31Doris Cailin Doris CJ. He's been good outstanding player, but what's going through this Irish team now?
15:37Was they making their way and looking to bounce back?
15:39Yep
15:39Colin Cailin Doris is he's always been earmarked to be captain you can see took a bit of charge last week and especially they tried
15:45That's he scored it Murat kept up
15:48this team at the moment, I think
15:50Looking at the changes that mates take they coming here to start the game and started
15:54Well, as I mentioned earlier, they were a bit reactive on the weekend and the few would be disappointed by the mistakes they made
16:00So start the game well and
16:02Look after that set piece and that breakdown and stick into it from the start
16:06Are they on the decline because it happens with emigrate squad somewhere along the line. You're gonna go down. Yeah, exactly
16:11It's a I wouldn't say they're on the decline. They're probably on that curve now
16:14I mean if they've won the Six Nations
16:16They've just before that had a great year number one just the year before so they're probably on the on the verge there
16:23So again, that's where you need to make changes as soon as you get comfortable
16:27The you know, you're in trouble because you have to move and be better Nick, you know a great great
16:33Decision I think to put in this young captain
16:35I mean he's gonna be give a lot of energy to this team in the last game
16:38They've got a play in the season and the balance of this pack just seems better
16:41Tate burn is a blindside flanker getting a physical lock on
16:45It's it's gonna be a great test match and and if the packet starts can front up with us
16:52It's the guys off the bench. I'm worried about
16:54Talking about fronting up we're fronting up back to Durban John de Villiers with the team out there in Durban
17:00Let's find out the insights in terms of who's gonna start for Island. What are they expecting from the Irish?
17:05Can the Irish bounce back was at the end of the season have they got the grant to match the box up front?
17:24Yeah
17:27Yeah, we're down here in Hollywood Kings Park wherever you are in South Africa Durban is the place to be in the winter
17:35Unbelievable weather here in Durban. We are down on the field and we join you again your favorite
17:42Overaged boy band. I've got Hanyani, Shimangi, John Smith and Skull Burger with me
17:47We tried to figure out what will happen today
17:50What will the tactics be one guy that certainly do know what will be happening is
17:54Island coach Andy Farrell and Joel Stransky caught up with him earlier
17:59Andy welcome to Durban firstly. What's your week been like particularly after a tough weekend?
18:04It's been hot actually
18:06The weather's been fantastic. So
18:09It's been a different week. Actually, we've looked after the lads last game of the season
18:14Making sure we've all got it in our legs for for what's going to be a proper test match this afternoon this afternoon
18:21For changes to the side. I mean how tough a selection been for you
18:25It's always tough. I mean, that's how you want it, isn't it? You don't want it easy as a coach
18:30There's a couple of injuries that are thrown in there as well
18:32But we feel that this is a nice balance for this match the leadership side the captaincy side. It's a it's a slight change. Oh
18:41Yeah, but it's something that we've talked about and
18:45Used before we're always trying to grow that side of
18:49Our game. Anyway, the leadership group tend to work together. So
18:53I'm hoping
18:55Presuming that's going to be seamless. Anyway Springboks will be another big ask today. What are you expecting from them? Same again?
19:00Oh, no, I'm expecting them to be better
19:03We're expecting that of ourselves as well
19:06so therefore I'm looking forward to how we
19:10How we go about meeting our own expectations. What do you have to do to win today?
19:16Probably probably be at our best but we just we just need to attack the game. That's that's all we're after
19:23Showing a good account of ourselves
19:25Going out there being fearless and attack the game and I'm sure if we do that, we'll be in with a shout
19:31Thanks very much Andy. Good luck today. Thanks. Thanks very much
19:36Well, they
19:38Well there we've heard from Andy Farrell the coach of Ireland a couple of changes in the Irish team for this game
19:45He said that they will have to be at their very best to win this game
19:47Show me in terms of the changes that we see in that Island starting lineup
19:52Which player do you think will make have the most significant impact?
19:56About the Ford's I like
19:57You know take Burnett at Flanker the chains are obviously on one is a big influence
20:01But for me the damage has to be done up front of this island team wants to give themselves an opportunity
20:06They have to get on top of the box dominate the scrums and get into public like
20:11Talk about getting into proper business in terms of racks
20:14Generating quick pull so they can play this attacking game
20:16They have so obviously a smitty there's been a bit of a change in the in the loose Joe
20:20Yeah for Ireland because of that change of type and going to
20:25To the flank the leadership. I mean there's a change in leadership. Will it have an impact on this game?
20:30Will it have an impact on the team?
20:32Are they settled in terms of the group that they have been together for so long and obviously you see that change
20:36There must be part of that thinking from fans must be the fact that he needs to put far more pressure on the breakdown
20:42I mean you look at what came at them with see and Peter step on the wings
20:45The only way to stop that is actually not to get the ball there
20:48So he's obviously made those changes to try and put put a bit more heat on that breakdown
20:52So that's just more difficult for South Africa to get that ball into those wider channels
20:55Which is also become a newer trend with Tony Brown in there
20:58But it's been it's been an amazing way to see how this team's developed
21:02And I think I don't think it'll be a disruptive thing either the positive is you've got a leader like that coming on
21:07You know, he's he's he's part of that group
21:10He's obviously at the latter end of his career and they're building as well, but they've done this strategically
21:15They've gone with the best possible combination that they think is going to give them a result to draw the series
21:19And that's what we're going to be careful of is what kind of heat they're going to put on the print on the breakdown
21:24It's got a breakdown, you know a lot about the breakdown Josh van van der Vlier
21:27Was he as effective last week as we've seen in the past and also that combination?
21:32Kalen Dorris now at eight also pretty good game from him last week
21:36I like it like the last thing about having Josh van der Vlier is absolute workhorse
21:39He frees up Kalen Dorris to carry see in the in the second half
21:42Especially how effective he became on the ball tight burn fills in at blindside, you know
21:49Probably a Mahoney not suited to the game last week
21:52Obviously James Ryan steps in also a nice powerful all-game cutter
21:56But this is what you get from Josh van der Vlier typical open side flanker works his socks up in the 15s
22:02So effective we'll see it's turnover. He makes later
22:06Former world rugby player of the year, but like she mentioned earlier for me
22:10There's about a high effect of the box can be at the breakdown today
22:14Which is going to set our attacking platform apart because I know that Ireland
22:17Is that a big thing about the breakdown this week and the box focus will be on our attacking breakdown Dwayne for Milan
22:23Is that a few sessions on the box targeting threats securing the ball much better than we did last week in Pretoria?
22:30Yeah, a big issue also from Ireland last week is how narrow the words defensively
22:34That's how the box managed to get space in the wide channels. So I think that's probably one area
22:38I think the box took them by surprise, but there was so narrow Peter steps
22:41Yeah, all is that space in the wider channels?
22:43I get the feeling the box might be probably go for the shorter option probably a bit more direct
22:47And look for that space, but I think Island defensively have to improve this weekend
22:50That's the thing that we also haven't spoken about this week is we've got the two best teams
22:53But it is the two best coaches
22:54They've always got some kind of a plan and you can see
22:57Rusty and his team would have adapted
22:58Giving up a few feet like a P option in terms of being able to be able to play through those inside channels
23:03But faz is also he looks very calm looks very confident
23:06And he's got a huge belief in this group to be able to adapt in a week
23:09It's kind of Connor Connor Murray at nine and effectively the third choice now, you know so much experience
23:14You know he comes into the starting lineup
23:16Will there be you reckon there'll be a change in the way that Island plays because of that change at nine
23:21Yeah, I think so like he just doesn't have that natural ability through body type
23:25He's a little bit taller
23:27Gibson Park the way he scoots and scoops the ball up and accesses a blind with James Lowe the tempo which he plays with
23:33Connor Murray at this stage in his career great player great game manager
23:37But not quite as lively as the others still has a running threat when he does decide to he knows how to run those sheet
23:44Lines the rack just takes a little bit slower with them runners have to rush to get it was all spring box
23:49You know you look at the first 20 30 minutes. We actually didn't see island implementing the game plan
23:53I think that's going to be the big thing now
23:54The position based team short passes the build pressure at the ball and the general movements around the pack is very good
24:00Last weekend we didn't see much of it
24:02So probably from them is to actually implement the game plan and see how the box response to it
24:07Well lots to discuss from this Irish team can they can they be more effective in terms of their attacking play?
24:13Can they boss the breakdown for certainly South Africa will do their very best there as well. That's our views on Ireland for now. Oh
24:22Thank you so much to the guys in Durban will please take note as well that island haven't lost to two in a row test
24:28Matches since 2021 so they can bounce back as well 80 more minutes left in their season
24:34Gentlemen lots to talk about last week. We spoke about the innovation of the spring box
24:38What is it that the Irish team is going to improve on or work on for for this test match?
24:42Well, we we just took out the scrum scrums that that where they were very they were very good in the first half
24:48they were
24:49You know, they were competitive. They put
24:52Particularly on the on the Lucette side Porter put her behind a bit of pressure
24:56I've got a feeling that that perhaps you can help me out here CJ perhaps. He's a very good scrummaging hooker
25:01Yes, he seems to
25:04To assist his two props because to move to move our front row like they did in that first half
25:10Was very surprising from a South African from my point of view and and this is what the island have to do in this game
25:16but not just for
25:18Not just for 40 minutes 50 minutes. They've got to do it for 60 because for 80 I beg your pardon because when we bring on
25:26Bomb squad our front row
25:29The difference between our starting front row and the guys who come on is negative negligible
25:34Whereas with Ireland it really is a big difference
25:37I mean this I haven't seen a pack disintegrate like that at the international level
25:43For four years for years and that was that was the the reserves that came on
25:47so a key part of this game is going to be on forward dominance and
25:52Really interesting to see how Farrell manages that front row because we will definitely give our guys
25:59Maybe 30 minutes 30 minutes before the end of the game. How long is he gonna keep his front row?
26:04He's starting front row on to try and match our pack before bringing on the guys who he knows might let him down
26:10That is a big question. It all starts up front for Ireland. Can they build up on that scrum performance last weekend?
26:16Can they improve their line out break down? There is solid. We'll take a short break then focus on the world number one team
26:29You
26:35Would you bet on the man with a secondhand hamstring or the rookie with beast shoes to fill
26:41Would you bet on him?

28:38The bomb squad was a huge difference last weekend
28:41What will it be today in Durban Kozulu Natal as we see the Springbok captains here in picture as they warm up
28:49Getting ready for this crucial test match for South Africa remember as well under a sea respite
28:54We've always struggled against island. They've got our number. Can the guys turn it around today?
28:58Let's go back to the guys in Durban John de Villiers and the T Jana
29:09Yeah guys in what world do you have a springbok team where they can bring six fresh forwards on 60 minutes into a game and
29:16Not lose a beat at all
29:17We do the same down here on the field where we've replaced two springboks with another two Charles transkin odd one to Ghani
29:24Also joining skulking myself in what will do you do that?
29:26Well on the world of champions on super sport one champion that we do have in the springbok team as well as our doctor coach
29:33Rossi Rasmus earlier on just trans he caught up with him on his views for the game
29:39Rossi welcome to Durban great win last week same squad. Were you tempted to tinker with selection a little bit?
29:46No, not really. We really hope everybody will be fit and at the beginning see I just had a bit of a niggle
29:51but on Monday morning time fully so
29:55Lucky for the first time in probably eight years that view for the third time
29:59We've picked the same squad so we want we wanted to do that
30:02There's been a slight change in in the way you guys are playing and maybe the influence of Tony Brown
30:06Are you happy with it should trajectory right now? Is it is it all going according to plan?
30:11We always try to see what will track is doing and we're the one take the game
30:15So, you know when it was all scrum based and always we tried that
30:19You know when they wanted more open and running right we and took some free kicks away and stuff like that
30:26It sort of makes you to do that. Otherwise, we'll just die and think you've got brilliant game plan
30:32So yes, we're trying to adapt them, but we're not never will go away from what makes us tick what does make us tick?
30:39What's important today?
30:40To make it personal for a country and to make it personal for ourselves and to know not representing only
30:46Russia Ross Mr. Dwayne from Newland Hawks or whoever but also your family and your and
30:51Also the African and that makes us tick. I look forward to a good victory today. What are you expecting from the Irish more improvement?
30:59Yeah, I don't think they were bad last week. I think obviously altitude does play a role
31:04But they stuck into it and you could see that last few minutes when we were 28 up
31:09I mean we could have put them away, but it went the other way, you know, they they made it a little tough game
31:14So if they want to go on where they left off, it's gonna be a tough afternoon
31:19So we expect that tougher in the Durban heat as well. Yeah
31:24Good luck today. Thanks for chatting
31:26Yes
31:29Yeah, make it personal the box
31:30Hopefully they can do that today so much to play for and this guy Tony Brown has made an immediate
31:36Impact and effect on the scrim of team Joel. Yeah, very much
31:39So Sean and I love that as well by the way that he's made it personal to you. All of us are South Africans
31:45It's a really nice touch and the fans have come out to support them and they do weekend week out. So really nice
31:49I like what Tony Brown has done already. I thought last week Andre Pollard cops a bit of flack for the way he played
31:55Missed a few kicks, but he started implementing this new
31:59Layer tiered attack and you can call it 1 1 3 or 1 1 4 1 1 whatever the guys
32:05Technically could call it but there was a bit of space out wide. There was loose forwards running into different channels
32:11There was something new and exciting about the way the springbok team played
32:15We saw used to seeing them bully teams into submission. It was a real sophisticated guy
32:20They're that started to show its head lovely to see
32:23You speak about the 1 1 2 1 1 3 odd
32:26Why are you surprised that the box didn't have to call 9-1-1 more after that physicality that was shown on Saturday?
32:32No injuries same team selected again. I know I think you know
32:36It's not often that in the test match you get a clean fill of health from the team
32:40Especially with the way playing against a team like Ireland the game is always gonna be physical, but I think you know
32:46You talk about the attack the kind of play that they are showing now
32:49It's surprised not us, but it's surprised the Irish team as well and a lot of us South African fans
32:54They've been calling because of the quality of players that we have
32:57Let's give them a bit more ball
32:59But and I think now with a with the introduction of Tony and I think that's we start to see more of that guys like
33:04Chesley guys like Katie
33:05I don't think they've had to like kind of make something out of nothing before have to chase and catch a high balls
33:11But now they're actually creating and those guys out why they need that one-on-one, you know when they can finish those
33:17So it's exciting and I'm sure there's still so much more they can improve on it is about the evolution of the team's cult
33:23We speak about the wider attacking the wider channel
33:25Is it very much different attack or is it just using the same shape and different options in the same attack?
33:31I think it's the same shape and you wonder what Tony Brown wants to do is make us have skill execution on the game line
33:37He's going to challenge hundred Pollard more than he's done in the previous few years
33:41He wants to return to the hundred Pollard that dominated the game line when he was 20 years old playing for the box
33:46Think Ellis Park against all blacks
33:48But also every single player more passes and this spring-bock team that we've seen in the past your previous games if we put up 80
33:55Rucks, there would have been 90 passes this last weekend 70 rucks 160 passes
34:01Hence, we exposed the islands defense
34:03That was quite wide the one fix the island would be trying to get a bit more width on attack
34:08But with our shape now that brings on the soft shoulders inside the shorter options
34:12You can only do that when you run square hard and be nice and tight
34:16Guys, we've still got so much to talk about but we're running out of time so much going on here today at Hollywood Kings Park
34:22It is a massive game the battle to be the best South Africa's 1-0 up
34:27We saw a great performance last week and both these teams emulated again today and can South Africa get that win?
34:35Durbin certainly thinks so they've come out in their numbers
34:38Yeah, they've come out of numbers and you guys are in numbers as well
34:42Talk about numbers the most experienced team ever selected by the spring-bock
34:46990 caps for the box as well and congrats to Jesse Creel together Damon D
34:51I landed being the most kept combination in the centers of the spring-bock gentleman
34:56Plenty on offer so much improvements required and we saw some different things in the breakdown last week CJ
35:01Yeah, look at the breakdown as we all spoke about it. That's gonna be the key battle for this weekend
35:05If you look at the the Irish side
35:07They've they've got a few place players like being slow they're saying on the breakdown if the spring walks are not if when the spring
35:15Walks control that break on the speed of it and get that ball out to the edges. That's where we'll see the difference again
35:21I think it's gonna be a long afternoon for file and if that breakdown isn't slowed down
35:25There's a few times. Yeah, if you'll see Island has got a few lazy layers laying it tight furlong
35:31Then there's a turnover what they're trying to create is the referee to look at the lazy guy lying there
35:36Distracting him from the poacher going over the ball. Look at this one again lying down or getting post his daughter's legally
35:42I don't think so, but the referee is concentrated there on tight furlong
35:46So that's their tactic there the fairness the box quick break down there
35:49The ball goes to the edge and again if we get the ball to the edges as I said earlier on with C
35:54I'm Peter Steph running there. It's gonna be a long afternoon. Yeah, it was just a lot of one cleaners by the box
35:58Is it sufficient? Well, what that's a very good point
36:01You see as soon as you spread the ball, you don't get the immediacy of the clean out
36:06And there's a massive difference between the clean out from two loose forwards or a lock and a prop and and a wing and a full
36:11Back, I mean, so Billy LaRue doesn't come from the Bucky's boy to clean out school
36:15You know, he's he tends to get over the ball and hope for the best
36:18But but you need physicality there to hold on to the ball in the wide set. I see you later
36:23You'll come back and check us at halftime. Now. We're gonna take a break and then return to Durban with a spring box
36:30We'll take on on in the second test match Island last time visited
36:35Durbin was back in 1981. Can the box make it back-to-back wins against Island?
