00:00A day in the life of Warren Buffett Warren Buffett is a man who needs no introduction.
00:07The CEO of Berkshire Hathaway is a successful man on all fronts.
00:13At 89 years old, Nebraska's true son is considered one of the best investors the world has ever
00:20seen.
00:21A frequent guest to Forbes' wealthiest people magazine, he has a net worth of $88.9 billion
00:28thanks to his conglomerate that owns and operates over 60 companies.
00:32How is it possible that one man can be able to execute all these responsibilities?
00:38If you need an answer, stick with us.
00:41We are about to slit open the daily routine of the world's fourth richest man.
00:47Morning Routine
00:49Success is not accidental.
00:52This business magnate, philanthropist, and super tycoon is one hell of an organized man.
00:58He is so organized that his best friend is, guess who, Microsoft's big boss Bill Gates.
01:06The Oracle of Omaha spends 80% of his time reading.
01:10He is a devoted book lover and always protects this habit to the bone.
01:15He wakes up every day at 6.45am, not as early as most successful people do.
01:22He has over the years reiterated that waking up at night is not his cup of tea.
01:26I have no desire to work at 4am in the morning, he said.
01:30Maybe this is due to his age, but still, his management method keeps getting better.
01:36Warren works out for about an hour and doesn't take breakfast at home.
01:40The billion dollar super investor is a lifelong customer at McDonald's.
01:44He has a regular menu here and decides which one best suits his appetite every day.
01:49He drives to McDonald's every single day for breakfast.
01:52He takes five minutes to order either two sausage patties and an egg or a cheese sandwich.
01:58He prefers paying in cash.
02:00Therefore, he tells his wife to put enough money for breakfast in the car before he leaves.
02:06A confessed junk lover, Warren says he eats like a six-year-old.
02:10I checked the actuarial table.
02:12The lowest death rate is among six-year-olds.
02:15This he said in an attempt to defend his undying love for strawberry milkshakes.
02:20Warren is also a dedicated client to one of the companies he partly owns, Coca-Cola.
02:25He takes five cans of the beverage every single day.
02:29From McDonald's, the billionaire heads straight to the office.
02:33Work Routine
02:35The chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway arrive typically at the office at 9.30am when
02:40the stock market is open.
02:42That is where his heart lives, the stock markets.
02:46Donning one of his 20 pairs of suits made by the same designer, Madame Lee, all of which
02:51he doesn't pay for, by the way, reason being, well, I don't know too.
02:57He walks to his desk, which he has used for over 50 years.
03:01Once in the office, much of the time he spends reading.
03:04He reads five newspapers every morning, starting with his favorite, Omaha World Herald, a company
03:10he bought back in 2011.
03:13Asked about his obsession with reading, he said,
03:15Read 500 pages like this every day.
03:18That's how knowledge works.
03:20It builds up, like compound interest.
03:23All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will do it.
03:27Warren reads and reads.
03:29He barely sends or receives email.
03:31Neither does he spend time looking at his phone.
03:34He says reading helps him avoid impulsive decisions in business.
03:38His reading materials are separated impressively, financial statements, newspapers, and books.
03:45His system completely shuts down except for his reading instincts.
03:48He switches off television, doors, and windows and gets in the zone.
03:53Some of the books he credits his success to include The Wealth of Nation by Adam Smith,
03:59The Intelligent Investor, and Security Analysis, both by Benjamin Graham.
04:04Warren is not a big fan boardroom meeting either.
04:07He gave him two options when at the office.
04:09First, he'd choose reading.
04:10The final option would be, guess what, reading.
04:15Bill Gates may be his best friend, socially, financially, and economically,
04:21but Warren has a sad story to tell about Microsoft.
04:25He has only sent one email in his life, which apparently ended up in federal court.
04:30Warren in 1997 responded to an email from Jeff Rakes, an executive at Microsoft.
04:37His response was published in a Wall Street Journal article, marking the end of him sending
04:41emails at work.
04:43As stated above, the staunch believer of long-term investment doesn't enjoy meetings at work,
04:49and if he has to attend, it better be very brief and straight to agendas.
04:54He tags along with his favorite snacks in the meetings, candies, and chocolate walnut fudge.
05:00After Work Routine
05:02After a busy day of reading and analyzing stock market behaviors, the legendary investment
05:07icon drives his old Cadillac DTS back home.
05:11Mr. Buffett is a man who loves to play, and he is an avid bridge player.
05:16He enjoys playing this card game with his billionaire buddy, Bill Gates.
05:20It is a game you can enjoy when you are in your 90s, and you are seeing a different intellectual
05:25challenge every seven minutes.
05:28It is the best exercise there is for the brain, he said.
05:31There you have it.
05:33If you thought it was just an ordinary game, then you just got damned.
05:36It is a mind-cracker, limited for critical thinkers only.
05:40Warren Buffett spends about 12 hours a week playing this game he really loves.
05:45In fact, he once sponsored a bridge competition in 2006 and named it Buffett Cup.
05:50The jewel of Omaha adores this game so much that he once cheekily quoted,
05:55If I'm playing a bridge and a naked woman walks by, I don't even see her.
06:00Another billionaire-like hobby Warren subscribes to is playing ukulele.
06:05In his free time away from work, the business magnate likes pulling the strings of this
06:09musical instrument.
06:11His relationship with ukulele started way back on somewhat shaky grounds.
06:16A woman he once had a crush on as a teen was dating a guy who owned a ukulele, so Warren
06:21thought it wise to learn the skills of playing and acquire his own.
06:25Unfortunately, the lady ended up snubbing Buffett to stay with his guy.
06:30We all know she missed a chance of a lifetime, but I guess it is true, choices have consequences.
06:37Thanks to her, the man behind many companies' success is a skilled player of this lute
06:43family instrument.
06:45Sometimes Buffett performs at meetings, during interviews, and in conventions.
06:50Warren Buffett is not quite the money-spender type of billionaire.
06:53Typical of any investor, his money barely sees the light of day for luxurious tweets.
06:58He'd rather donate to charity than buy a fleet of expensive cars and spend on magnificent
07:03mega mansions.
07:05I mean, here's that guy.
07:07He also enjoys his golf, but not in a Porsche golf club.
07:11I can be a member of every golf club that I want to be a member of, but I'd rather be
07:16playing golf here with people I like than at the fanciest golf course in the world,
07:20he told Q&A.
07:22Come to think of it, Buffett's most expensive venture has to be the private jet he bought
07:27for the sake of constant business travels.
07:30A dedicated lifelong fan of Nebraska football, Warren attends matches when he is in a position
07:35to.
07:36He loves this sport so much that he invented a competition amongst his employees back in
07:412014.
07:43He challenges them to guess all 16 teams that would participate in the NCAA March Madness.
07:50And for anyone who gets it right, he promises to pay $1 million yearly for the rest of his
07:55or her life.
07:57That's now what we call a baller move.
07:59Unfortunately, no one has even come close to winning the contest in its six years' existence.
08:05The last day of the week that is Sunday, the business magnate developed quite a thoughtful
08:10hobby.
08:11He treats a dozen of kids to an ice cream party at Dairy Queen, which is part of his
08:15attractive investment network.
08:18Most of these kids are his grandchildren and their friends.
08:21He, however, complains that immediately after getting their orders, the kids spend time
08:26sticking their heads to the phones.
08:29Warren loves his sleep.
08:30After a long day of playing with figures, he retires to bed daily at 10.45pm and follows
08:36that bedtime routine religiously.
08:38A decent sleep for eight hours.
08:41That is how the Nebraska native legendary investor spends his time, both at work and
08:46at home.
08:47Final thoughts
08:49Like everybody else, Warren Buffett has had several setbacks in life, both as a business
08:54mogul and as an ordinary man.
08:57But his way of life is a blueprint to emulate for people seeking to reach greater heights.
09:02From being rejected to Harvard Business School, to his father-in-law predicting he would fail
09:06in his business quest, Warren teaches us the modesty and self-drive that most people in
09:11business lack.
09:13His business acumen makes it valuable to all the companies he has toiled to build.
09:17The biggest lesson that can be learned from this godfather of business is patience.
09:22It is no doubt that that patience is not the ability to wait, but how you act while
09:27you're waiting.
