00:09Aces are fantastic, and so is a king.
00:14But when they come in pairs, disaster they bring on Kutchox.
00:21And here's the host of Kutchox, Jim Perry!
00:27I'm going to get a head start. Thank you, Jack.
00:29Hello, there. Welcome to Card Sharks.
00:32Thank you for joining us at home
00:33and a nice group here in the studio.
00:35Gene Wood, you're very kind.
00:38And a nice opening poem sent in by Anne Young
00:41of Yucaipa, California, watching us on KNBC Channel 4.
00:44Thank you, Anne. Now we're going to open up the board
00:46and get to those cards. Go ahead.
00:49And Janice and Christian, if you will,
00:50start loading in the cards, and we'll meet our Card Sharks.
00:54Toby Smith, our champion. Hi, Toby.
00:56Good to see you again.
00:57I'm glad to be here. I'm glad to be here.
00:59I got a little reminder about you.
01:00Well, I'll tell you, my name is Toby Smith.
01:02I live in Long Beach, California.
01:04I am a sales manager by profession.
01:08Wintertime, I like to ski.
01:09Summertime, I like to play tennis,
01:10and I like to play Card Sharks.
01:12Well, I can't blame you because you play it very well.
01:14Toby's won $3,100 in cash with his challenger, Julie Williams.
01:19Hi, Julie. Nice to see you.
01:20Hi, Jim. Nice to see you, too.
01:21And again, a little reminder about you.
01:23My name is Julie Williams, and I'm from Pacifica, California.
01:26I'm an airline stewardess.
01:27I have a husband, three children, a horse, a dog,
01:31a bird, and a cat.
01:33That's definitely a full crowd.
01:35She's also a very good player because she won Game 1
01:38and our best two out of three.
01:39And we're gonna pick up where we left off.
01:41You both got the cards, of course?
01:42We sure did.
01:43Then let's pick it up.
01:44As I say, two out of three, and Julie won Game 1.
01:46So, we have dealt out the same two decks of cards.
01:48We're about to start Game 2 with a question and answer.
01:52Let's start Game 2 with a question to Julie.
01:54Julie, we found 100 geniuses.
01:57These are all people whose IQ is above the genius level.
02:00And we asked them, did you ever flunk out of school?
02:04How many geniuses said, yes, they did flunk out of school?
02:08Well, I think that's got to be, well, maybe a medium number
02:12because some of them are going to imply themselves,
02:14but school, for some, is just boring.
02:17And so, they're not gonna pay attention.
02:18They're gonna play around.
02:19And so, the teachers are gonna think they're stupid,
02:21and so, they're gonna flunk them.
02:22So, that's kind of a middle-of-the-road number.
02:24So, I'm gonna have to say, oh, 40.
02:2640 out of 100 geniuses who flunked out of school.
02:28Well, I agree for logic.
02:29I agree for logic because, you know,
02:30geniuses, sometimes your brain's so going,
02:32you don't concentrate on what you're doing.
02:34But I don't think they want to admit that.
02:36I think they're gonna be a little lower.
02:37I think they're gonna be a little lower.
02:38You say lower.
02:39Well, if it is lower, you'll play your cards, Toby.
02:41If not, it'll be Julie with hers.
02:43And the actual number of geniuses who flunked out of school is 15.
02:47Yeah.
02:48Toby's right, it is lower.
02:50However, if 15 geniuses flunked out,
02:52there's hope for the rest of us.
02:53And Toby starts off Game 2 with a 3.
02:55Yes.
02:56Gotta be higher.
02:57Gotta be higher.
02:58Higher than a 3.
02:59Yes, a 7.
03:00Oh, we gotta hold.
03:01We gotta hold.
03:02Freeze.
03:03And we move over to the Freeze Bar,
03:04protecting that position for Toby.
03:05Question 2 to you, Toby.
03:06All right.
03:07We asked 116-year-old girls,
03:08if a crazy new law said that a mother got to choose
03:12her daughter's husband,
03:14would your mother choose a real turkey for you?
03:17How many 16-year-old girls said,
03:19yeah, their mom would choose a real turkey for them?
03:22I think a 16-year-old, you still think your mom is out of it.
03:25She doesn't have a clue.
03:26And I bet you about 20 of those girls thought their mother was all right,
03:31but only 20.
03:33So you're saying that 80 of them said mom would pick a real turkey?
03:36No, I'd say only 20 of them.
03:37Oh, 80.
03:38I'm saying right.
03:39You're right.
03:4080 would say it would be turkeys.
03:41Okay.
03:4280 out of 116-year-olds said,
03:43yeah, mom would pick a turkey.
03:45That has got to definitely be lower.
03:49My mom was a great mom.
03:50I remember when I was 16 years old and she was always with it.
03:53And she would have never picked a turkey for me.
03:55So I'm going to say lower.
03:56You're going to say lower.
03:57That's right.
03:58Who would want to be married to a turkey anyway?
04:0180 for Toby, lower for Julie.
04:03The actual number of 16-year-old girls who said their mom would choose a real turkey for them is 39.
04:08Julie's right.
04:09It is lower.
04:10Yeah.
04:11Moms do know a thing or two.
04:13And Julie starts this game with a two.
04:15Good card.
04:16Let's go higher.
04:17Higher than a two.
04:18A five.
04:19Let's go higher.
04:20Risking it higher.
04:21It is a six.
04:22Three.
04:23Now we move over the freeze bar and Julie takes the advantage by one card.
04:27Question three to you, Julie.
04:29We asked 100 psychiatrists, in your opinion,
04:32can a person who has a sex change operation find true happiness as a member of the opposite sex?
04:40How many psychiatrists said a person who has a sex change operation can find true happiness?
04:45I think that's going to be a high number because before they had the sex change,
04:49they were unhappy and they were unhappy with themselves.
04:52So any change is going to be for the better and they can find real happiness.
04:55I'm going to say that's got to be a high number.
04:57It's going to be 69.
04:5869 of the 100 psychiatrists said, yes, they can find true happiness.
05:02I'm sorry I can't relate to that question, but I'm going to say 69 is a little high.
05:08They were unhappy with themselves to get the sex change operation,
05:11but just by changing yourself still doesn't change your mind.
05:15So I'm going to say it's a little lower.
05:16You say lower.
05:17They want their mind.
05:18Actually, I was thinking as you said that they possibly could relate to both sides of the question.
05:22That's 69 for Julie and lower for Toby.
05:24The actual number of psychiatrists who said a person who has a sex change operation can find true happiness is 43.
05:30All right.
05:31It is lower and Toby has it.
05:32Interesting.
05:33Okay.
05:34Change the card and make them good.
05:35Now winning the question, he has the right to change it.
05:37And a jack is a good change.
05:38Yeah.
05:39Boy, I tell you, those jacks have been bad to me today.
05:41I'm going to have to go lower.
05:42I'm going to stay with the odds.
05:43Lower?
05:44Yes.
05:45They've been good.
05:46I'm going to go higher.
05:47Definitely.
05:48A four.
05:49A nine.
05:50Yes.
05:51I'm going to freeze.
05:52Now we move over the freeze bar.
05:53Toby needs one card.
05:54Julie needs two cards.
05:55Sudden death.
05:56Someone has to win this game on this play of the cards.
05:58Toby, we surveyed 100 women who are married to U.S. congressmen in Washington, D.C.
06:04And we asked them, does your husband ever ask your advice on which way to vote?
06:1080 wives of congressmen said yes, their husband does ask their advice on how to vote.
06:14Oh, I think watching the media, they always talk about when they ask a candidate, they say,
06:18well, my wife said, and I think they agree a lot of times with what their wives say.
06:22I'm going to say they want to protect their wives, stay good at home.
06:25I'm going to say 80 of them said yes, they do talk of their people.
06:2880 out of 100.
06:29Julie?
06:30I think that's going to be a lower number, Jim.
06:32A lot of them ask their wives' opinion, but I don't think it's going to be quite that high.
06:37I'm going to say lower.
06:38You say lower.
06:40You had control in sudden death.
06:41The actual number of wives of congressmen who said their husband does ask their advice on how to vote is 39.
06:47Very much lower.
06:48Julie, you're right.
06:49Julie, it is sudden death.
06:51You had control with a 6, you could play it for two cards.
06:54Toby near the middle with a 9, but he needs only one card.
06:57Your decision, play or pass?
06:58I think I'll pass it to Toby.
06:59Then it comes down to one and all.
07:00Toby, if you called this right, you've tied up the match.
07:02If you called it wrong, we have a new champion.
07:04Hey, I've been going up higher all day long, got to go higher.
07:07And again, he goes against the odds.
07:09He's waiting in to play it up.
07:13That is exactly what happened on our last show when he went against the odds to tie things up coming from behind.
07:19And now each player with one game and $100, we set up for the tiebreaker.
07:23Three cards up there.
07:24Three questions here.
07:25Julie, we start the tiebreaker with you.
07:27Julie, we asked 100 people.
07:29If money could buy time and a millionaire offered to buy five years of your life for $1 million,
07:39would you sell?
07:40How many people would sell five years of their life for $1 million?
07:45Jim, that's going to be a low number.
07:46I know I wouldn't sell five years of my life for any amount of money.
07:49Life's too precious.
07:50So I'm going to say that's got to be real low.
07:5311.
07:5411 out of 100 people would.
07:56You know, I tell you, I like your logic.
07:57I think it makes sense.
07:58But, you know, we're asking 100 people, and I think there's got to be more than 11 people who would like to get a million bucks for five years.
08:05Wouldn't bother them a bit.
08:06I'm going to say higher.
08:07You say higher.
08:08The actual number of people who would sell five years of their life for $1 million is 12 by 1.
08:14It is higher.
08:15Wow.
08:16Both players were right around it, and Toby comes out on top with 2.
08:20Higher.
08:21Higher than a 2.
08:22An 8.
08:23Or lower.
08:24For the championship.
08:25Lower.
08:26Lower.
08:27Yes.
08:28Toby wins it.
08:29Coming from behind.
08:30My goodness.
08:31Julie, we have to say goodbye.
08:32You've got one game, $100, and a lot of nice parties.
08:35Thank you, Jim.
08:36I enjoyed it.
08:37Toby, come on down here.
08:39I think this is the third time in a row you've come from behind with two in a row.
08:44And this time, I hope she tops it off with some great money cards coming at you right after this.
08:49Oh, three times in a row.
08:57Do you remember when all your favorite songs were on the radio?

10:57Yes, I did. I'm ready.
10:58All right, come on, Toby.
10:59Let's get up there and kill him.
11:00Let's go.
11:03Let's get him really hot for a while, Toby.
11:05I hope you gave him a great cut.
11:06$200 in new money.
11:07Oh, I hope I did.
11:08Three cards.
11:09Your decision how you bet them.
11:10Move up to the second level.
11:11We have another $200 of betting money,
11:13and we give you three more cards.
11:15Minimum bet's $50 until you get to the top card,

11:21Come on, $200.
11:22Okay, okay.
11:23And remember, Toby,
11:24you can change the base card on each level if you need to.
11:26Thank you, Kristen.
11:27We'll start, Toby, with...
11:28Yeah!
11:29$200 down.
11:30Whole thing, $200.
11:31Whole thing.
11:32That this is lower than an ace.
11:33And it is.
11:34Yeah.
11:35Okay, I'm gonna say $50 lower.
11:36$50 minimum bet.
11:37Lower than a 10.
11:38He's right again.
11:39Yeah, all right.
11:40I'm gonna say...
11:41I'm gonna say $300 up.
11:42$300 is higher than a 3.
11:43No.
11:44You and your doubles over here, Toby.
11:45Doggone.
11:46It's all right.
11:47But we're gonna give you the other $200
11:48when we move up the 3.
11:49It is a good card.
11:50And you've got $350.
11:51Okay, I got $200.
11:52It says higher.
11:53$200.
11:54Higher.
11:55Three 3s.
11:56It's all right.
11:57I gotta win one of these, don't I?
11:58I hope it's this one.
11:59I hope so, too.
12:00Okay, $150.
12:01It's gotta...
12:02No, $100.
12:03$100 is gonna be higher.
12:04$100.
12:05Higher.
12:06Higher.
12:07Higher.
12:08Higher.
12:09Higher.
12:10Higher.
12:11Higher.
12:12Higher.
12:13Higher.
12:14Higher.
12:15Higher.
12:17That is the first time, and I don't think I'm mistaken,
12:21it is the first time in over two years on the show
12:24that four in a row have come up.
12:26Doesn't that make you feel better, Toby?
12:28Hey, that's great.
12:29Come on, you got $50 and a 3.
12:32Well, I know I gotta win, right?
12:33All of it up.
12:34Well, it could be a 2, but let's not see one.
12:36Higher.
12:37A 4.
12:38Yes.
12:39Whoo.
12:40And we move up the 4.
12:43Toby, with your luck, be careful.
12:46My luck is changing.
12:48$100 all the way.
12:49I gotta win it.
12:50All right, come on.
12:51I gotta win it.
12:52Give this man $200, please.
12:53Yes.
12:54Yes.
12:55I can't believe that.
12:56Oh.
12:57You know, you play so well,
13:00and you have such terrible luck over there.
13:03Oh, my goodness.
13:04Nonetheless, inching along, $3,500 is not bad for inching.

16:42Just stand there in front of the mic, sir. Nice to have you here.
16:46Morrie, you got a lot of friends. Isn't that nice?
16:48How do you like that?
16:50Won't you tell us about you?
16:52Well, a little bit about me. I'm a senior citizen, as you can see.
16:56And I've been married about a quarter of a century more than you have, Jim.
17:01How do you know that?
17:03Oh, come on. Don't you think people listen to your show?
17:06Oh, yes. Well, yeah. As you mentioned, yes. I just had my 21st wedding anniversary.
17:10And incidentally, a lot of people, I mentioned it casually, a lot of people sent in cards and congratulated my wife and I.
17:16We thank you. It was very kind of you to do so.
17:18But you've been married a quarter of a century longer than that?

23:08Well, from the way the prisoners get out and wind up back in again,

23:17The parole boards have been very lenient
