00:00:00The airplane involved was a Beechcraft Bonanza single-engine aircraft.
00:00:06On board, pilot Bruce Guernon had two passengers, his father and business partner.
00:00:12They took off from Andros Island in the Bahamas and headed northwest for the Florida coast.
00:00:18It was December 4, 1970.
00:00:21If you draw up a map, trace a line connecting the island of Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Miami,
00:00:27and back to Bermuda, what do you get?
00:00:29Yes, it's a triangle, a sinister polygon known for mysteriously swallowing over 2,000
00:00:36ships and 200 aircraft over the centuries.
00:00:39Bruce Guernon's plane was within its hungry grasp.
00:00:44But this was a typical flight Bruce had made dozens of times before.
00:00:48The trip usually took about an hour and a half, with no hiccups or mysterious phenomena
00:00:53whatsoever.
00:00:54The men were no more concerned than you would be during your daily commute to work.
00:00:59Oh, but this time would be different.
00:01:02They would face very unusual circumstances indeed.
00:01:06Bruce took off and started gaining altitude.
00:01:09Strange things started happening right from the get-go.
00:01:13At an altitude of about 1,000 feet, he noticed a small cloud up ahead.
00:01:18But it kept growing.
00:01:20Right from the plane getting closer, this thing was actually getting bigger in size.
00:01:25Bruce had to fly through it, and he came out the other end just fine.
00:01:30Another mysterious cloud appeared at 11,500 feet.
00:01:34This one was massive, and Bruce had no other choice but to fly through it too.
00:01:39So he concentrated, took a deep breath, and in they went.
00:01:44At that moment, it got dark as night all around the aircraft.
00:01:48But a single sliver of sunshine got through.
00:01:51But this wasn't a storm cloud, and it wasn't raining.
00:01:55Bruce was starting to get worried, and then, bam, he saw flashes of white light.
00:02:00They would appear and vanish quickly like lightning.
00:02:04But this pilot knew this certainly was no lightning.
00:02:07The flashes were so bright, they lit up the whole space around them.
00:02:11Bruce kept flying for another 30 minutes, when he realized this was the same cloud he
00:02:16had gone through earlier when he started to climb.
00:02:20But now the cloud was cylindrical, and the plane was flying through its center.
00:02:25It was about one mile wide and seemed endless.
00:02:28Bruce thought he could never get out of that trap.
00:02:31But a minute later, he saw light at the end of the tunnel.
00:02:35He kept that yoke straight ahead.
00:02:37He was almost out of this nightmare.
00:02:40But all of a sudden, unexplainable things started happening again.
00:02:44The walls of the cloud tunnel began to narrow.
00:02:47They were closing in on the plane.
00:02:50The navigational instruments started wigging out.
00:02:53The compass was spinning by itself counterclockwise.
00:02:57The electronic instruments were all malfunctioning.
00:03:00It was like the plane was being operated by something else, or it was moving inside some
00:03:05kind of current.
00:03:07All of Bruce's attempts to take control were to no avail.
00:03:11He kept flying through that tunnel, bound and determined to get out of this thing and
00:03:16live to tell the tale.
00:03:18The walls kept narrowing, smaller and smaller, wrapping like a vortex.
00:03:23Bruce was running out of time.
00:03:25He had to get out of this place fast.
00:03:27The next 20 seconds were the most intense of his life.
00:03:31But then, he burst out of this foggy trap.
00:03:34As Bruce described later, he felt weightless for 5 seconds as his plane left the tunnel.
00:03:40The clouds dispersed, and now the aircraft was in a grayish haze.
00:03:45The men let out a big sigh of relief.
00:03:48He immediately grabbed the radio and contacted ground control.
00:03:52Bruce wanted them to determine his location.
00:03:55But when the dispatcher looked at the green screen, his face became contorted with confusion.
00:04:01Bruce's plane wasn't on the radar.
00:04:04It was as if the thing was invisible.
00:04:06But then, the dispatcher said the aircraft was already in Miami airspace.
00:04:12Bruce was utterly shocked by this information.
00:04:15It just couldn't be true.
00:04:17The distance the Beechcraft was supposed to cover was about 250 miles.
00:04:21Remember, the whole trip usually took around 90 minutes.
00:04:25But this time, it took just 47 minutes to get to the destination.
00:04:30This model of aircraft can only cruise at about 180 miles per hour.
00:04:35Do the math, and anyone would understand that this was physically impossible.
00:04:40The dispatcher must have made a mistake.
00:04:43But when the clouds parted, Bruce saw that he really was over Miami.
00:04:49The plane landed safely, and it was time to try and solve this mystery.
00:04:53So what happened on that flight?
00:04:56Bruce checked the remaining fuel in his watch.
00:04:59After a short calculation, he was only more confused.
00:05:02The plane hadn't gone through the amount of fuel it should've.
00:05:06Bruce couldn't have been wrong.
00:05:08He was a very experienced pilot.
00:05:11By his early 20s, he already had 600 hours of flight under his belt.
00:05:15And he was all too familiar with this airspace he'd flown countless times.
00:05:20All the evidence in hand seemed to indicate that Bruce's plane just skipped over almost
00:05:26half the entire distance.
00:05:28The man thought about this bizarre occurrence for a long time.
00:05:32He even consulted with professors and experts.
00:05:35But none of them could give an exact answer to what happened that day.
00:05:40So he came up with his own theory, and even wrote a book about it.
00:05:44Bruce thought it all came down to this electric fog with white flashes.
00:05:48Others, however, theorized that dark energy was responsible for this time leap.
00:05:54Yes, that same dark energy responsible for the expansion of the universe.
00:05:59This energy could've curved time-space like a black hole, forming this strange tunnel.
00:06:06Bruce accidentally hit it, but he was lucky to get out of there.
00:06:09That's how he got into Miami airspace so fast.
00:06:13But dark energy is just a theory attempting to explain the unexplainable.
00:06:19To this day, there is no real answer for how Bruce was able to travel that distance in
00:06:24such a short time.
00:06:25But some details still can be explained.
00:06:29Archive records show that 84 sunspots were recorded that day, as well as a huge solar
00:06:34wind moving almost 440 miles per second.
00:06:38This would cause disturbances in the Earth's magnetosphere that could throw off the plane's
00:06:43instruments and radars.
00:06:45So Bruce's version that he was in an electronic fog could be right.
00:06:50And about these weird clouds.
00:06:52The thing is, they're pretty commonplace things in this area.
00:06:56Planes with low and high pressure are constantly colliding there.
00:07:00The result?
00:07:01Storm clouds.
00:07:02Perhaps that cloud growing before Bruce's eyes was simply two massive air currents crashing
00:07:07into each other.
00:07:09But so far, no one has been able to explain how the plane got to Miami so fast.
00:07:15Well, maybe in the future the truth will be revealed.
00:07:18In the meantime, it remains another mysterious riddle of the Bermuda Triangle.
00:07:24But it's still, by far, not the most shocking incident there.
00:07:28In 1945, a total of 5 planes went missing in the Bermuda Triangle all at once.
00:07:34On December 5, some Navy student pilots were training in the area.
00:07:39The day's lesson?
00:07:40Navigation.
00:07:41Ironically enough, they couldn't find their way back to the base and got lost.
00:07:46Many people assume they ran out of fuel.
00:07:49This is likely to have caused the incident, but the circumstances were very strange.
00:07:54The students were under the supervision of an experienced lieutenant who had 2,500 flight
00:08:00hours.
00:08:01He would never let a bunch of newbies go so far that they'd get lost.
00:08:05The incident was called Flight 19.
00:08:08Even now, there's a debate about how it could have happened.
00:08:12Three years later, a passenger jet headed to Miami from Puerto Rico disappeared in the
00:08:17same area.
00:08:18There were 29 passengers and 3 crew members on board.
00:08:22The weather was clear throughout the flight.
00:08:25But experts believe that when the plane was about 50 miles off the coast of Miami, it
00:08:30could have been hit by a strong wind that knocked it off course.
00:08:34Years later, divers found a similar-looking plane in the waters.
00:08:38But since it was lacking certain details and registrations, no one could confirm that it
00:08:43was the missing Miami-bound aircraft.
00:08:46The next month, in January 1948, another plane went missing in Bermuda.
00:08:5225 passengers and 6 crew members just vanished somewhere between Azores and Bermuda.
00:08:59The mystery of this plane's disappearance, along with countless others, remains unsolved.
00:09:06Hmm, can we estimate how many ships and airplanes were lost in the Bermuda Triangle?
00:09:12Have their disappearances resulted from human error or weather phenomena?
00:09:15Let's try to find out.
00:09:18We have a curious story of the SS Cotopaxi.
00:09:21This ship vanished in 1925, traveling from Charleston, South Carolina, to Havana, Cuba.
00:09:28It never reached its destination.
00:09:31Years later, in the 1980s, a wreck was found 40 miles off St. Augustine, Florida.
00:09:37Since specialists could not precisely determine what and where it came from, they nicknamed
00:09:42it Bear Wreck.
00:09:44It took many additional years of work, done mainly by marine biologists, to identify that
00:09:49this ship was indeed the missing SS Cotopaxi.
00:09:54This was confirmed in January 2020.
00:09:57How did the ship just reappear?
00:09:59And how did it get there, since this mysterious shipwreck isn't even in the Bermuda Triangle?
00:10:05Now, let's see who came up with this term, Bermuda Triangle.
00:10:10Can you actually pinpoint the triangle on a map?
00:10:13No, it's not an officially recognized location either.
00:10:16The Bermuda Triangle does not appear on any world map.
00:10:20Nobody has agreed on its exact boundaries.
00:10:23There are only assumptions with approximations of the entire area, ranging between 500,000
00:10:30and 1.5 million square miles.
00:10:32By all approximations, the region has a vaguely triangular shape.
00:10:38In 1964, an American author named Vincent Hayes Gaddis first came up with the idea when
00:10:44writing an article for Argosy magazine.
00:10:47He used the Bermuda Triangle to describe a triangular region that has destroyed hundreds
00:10:53of ships and planes without a trace.
00:10:56It is pretty hard to get the number of lost ships and planes because some ships and aircraft
00:11:01have gone missing without leaving a trace.
00:11:04Their wreckage in the region has not been recovered.
00:11:07The recorded story should help us.
00:11:10Legends about the Bermuda Triangle date back to the 15th century, like that of the Italian
00:11:16explorer Christopher Columbus.
00:11:18When sailing through the Atlantic waters, he passed by this location in the late 1400s.
00:11:24In what we now know as the Bermuda Triangle, he saw a huge flame that seemed to just crash
00:11:30into the ocean.
00:11:31Later, he saw an unusual light flashing in the distance at the exact location.
00:11:36Like many other sailors since then, his compass had severe malfunctions.
00:11:42Flight 19, a Navy plane on a routine schedule back in 1945, also started the Bermuda Triangle
00:11:49legend.
00:11:50It was commanded by Lieutenant Charles Taylor, and it's recorded that he just got lost
00:11:55in the triangle for no reason.
00:11:57Since pilots had no GPS back then, they had to trust their compasses and keep track of
00:12:02how long they'd been flying in a specific direction and their speed.
00:12:07Shortly after completing the task, both of the compasses on board stopped working correctly.
00:12:13Records found after the plane's disappearance also indicate that Taylor didn't have a
00:12:17watch on that particular day.
00:12:20The initial report stated that pilot error was to blame for this unfortunate event.
00:12:26However, because people weren't satisfied with this outcome, it was changed to causes
00:12:31or reasons unknown after several reviews.
00:12:36One surviving pilot named Bruce Guerin suggested he went through an electronic fog while passing
00:12:41above the triangle, making him travel through time.
00:12:46In 1970, when this incident happened, he was flying his aircraft when it was surrounded
00:12:51by two huge clouds that formed a whirlpool and spiraled.
00:12:56Like many others before him, he noticed that his navigation devices were malfunctioning.
00:13:01When he eventually made it out of those clouds, he discovered that his flight had only taken
00:13:0635 minutes.
00:13:08It should've taken 75 in total.
00:13:11Since he had no other reasonable explanation for what he went through, he believed he must
00:13:16have been pushed forward in time.
00:13:18It's not only strange-looking clouds that have been seen above the Bermuda Triangle.
00:13:23In 2014, a pilot recalled almost colliding with a flying object that he could not identify
00:13:30whatsoever.
00:13:31Some of these strange encounters were even caught on tape.
00:13:35It's the case of an early 2015 flight whose passengers noticed a curious object just floating
00:13:41over the ocean.
00:13:43The pilots have yet to figure out what they actually saw back there.
00:13:47Okay, not all of the possible explanations have been this unusual.
00:13:52Oceanographers, for example, have also tried to explain why ships disappear around here.
00:13:58So they recently came back to one of their old theories – rogue waves.
00:14:03These are immense walls of water that just pop up suddenly.
00:14:06If multiple such waves rise simultaneously, they overlap like a wave sandwich.
00:14:13If one single wave can reach over 30 feet tall and happen simultaneously, it can create
00:14:18a rogue wave that can surpass 100 feet high.
00:14:22These types of waves can quickly overtake even the biggest of ships.
00:14:27Meteorologists came up with their own explanation too – hexagonal clouds.
00:14:32These unusual types of clouds can generate winds of up to 170 mph, and they're pretty
00:14:38significant too, some reaching 20 to 55 miles across.
00:14:44As such, waves inside these wind giants can go as high as 45 feet.
00:14:50The Earth's own magnetic force might also have something to do with it.
00:14:54In the Bermuda Triangle, compasses point to True North, the geographic North Pole, rather
00:15:00than Magnetic North, the shifting magnetic North Pole.
00:15:04Some have even explained that, since these two perfectly overlap in the Bermuda Triangle,
00:15:10it can cause a magnetic phenomenon that could make navigational devices malfunction.
00:15:15It's called the agonic line.
00:15:18The problem is that scientists have discovered that this line moves each year.
00:15:22Wind might have passed through the Bermuda Triangle at one point, but it's now through
00:15:26the Gulf of Mexico.
00:15:29Other strange natural phenomenon found along the coast of Norway could help explain why
00:15:34the Bermuda Triangle has claimed so many ships.
00:15:37There are some deep craters there, measuring up to half a mile wide and are 150 feet deep.
00:15:44Scientists believe they were created by methane gas bubbles.
00:15:48This gas seems to be leaking from deposits hidden deep in the seabed.
00:15:52Once the gas reaches a certain quantity, it bursts to the surface and causes eruptions.
00:15:58So, do pilots and ship captains actually avoid this area today?
00:16:04Could this explain why there are fewer ships that get lost there nowadays?
00:16:09But if you've ever flown from Miami to San Juan, Puerto Rico, you probably know that's
00:16:14not true.
00:16:15As for ships, if people would avoid the Bermuda Triangle, nearly all Caribbean vacations would
00:16:21be spoiled.
00:16:22To this day, there are a lot of flights that go over the Bermuda Triangle, so it's clear
00:16:28nobody is avoiding it.
00:16:30This place is one of the most heavily traveled shipping lanes in the world.
00:16:34Nowadays, the Bermuda Triangle has heavy daily traffic, both by sea and air.
00:16:40But the Bermuda Triangle is indeed subject to tropical storms and hurricanes that happen
00:16:45very often.
00:16:46Let's also keep in mind that the Gulf Stream, a strong ocean current that causes sharp changes
00:16:52in local weather, passes through the Bermuda Triangle.
00:16:55Besides, the deepest point in the Atlantic Ocean, the Milwaukee Depth, is also located
00:17:01in the Bermuda Triangle.
00:17:03The Puerto Rico Trench reaches almost 27,500 feet at the Milwaukee Depth.
00:17:09So, if you think about it, the whole mystery is a perfect combination of human error, bad
00:17:15weather, and a lot of ship traffic.
00:17:18This was confirmed by data provided by the U.S. Coast Guard.
00:17:22If you look at percentages, the number of ships or planes that go missing in the Bermuda
00:17:26Triangle isn't different from anywhere else.
00:17:30Disappearances do not happen more often than in any comparable region of the Atlantic Ocean.
00:17:36Local statistics say around 50 ships and 20 airplanes have vanished while traveling
00:17:41through this region.
00:17:42So, that's another reason why the total number is so hard to pinpoint.
00:17:48Nobody could describe its rescue in official records if a boat was reported missing.
00:17:53There are also some events that, it turns out, didn't happen at all, adding to those
00:17:58false reports.
00:18:00Take that of a plane crash back in 1937 off Daytona Beach, Florida, that local papers
00:18:06surprisingly revealed nothing about.
00:18:11The legend of the Bermuda Triangle.
00:18:13It's one of the few mysteries we still can't solve.
00:18:16Let's rewind back about 600 years.
00:18:19The story begins with an Italian man.
00:18:23He wanted to sail across the ocean to reach Asia, a continent rich with spices, silk,
00:18:28minerals, you know, that kind of stuff.
00:18:30Getting there by land would take ridiculously long, so he figured, hey, why not to build
00:18:35some sturdy ships, gather a couple of sailors and set off to Asia?
00:18:40What could go wrong?
00:18:42That man was Christopher Columbus, by the way.
00:18:45In 1492, with a little help from Spain's royal family, he embarked on his journey.
00:18:51Everything was going well, I mean, apart from totally going the wrong way.
00:18:55But as he got to the end of his voyage, he noticed something very strange.
00:19:00He didn't know it at the time, but he was sailing through the infamous Bermuda Triangle.
00:19:05The BT, the point of no return, the scary place between Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and Florida.
00:19:12There are loads of stories of ships, boats, and planes disappearing into this mysterious
00:19:17realm.
00:19:18Some were found years later, and some disappeared off the face of the earth, lying undiscovered
00:19:24at the bottom of the ocean.
00:19:26Maybe.
00:19:27We know one thing for sure, we have no clue what's going on over there.
00:19:32People have been trying to figure it out for years, but nothing, zip, nada.
00:19:38So what was it that Christopher Columbus saw that fateful evening?
00:19:42What freaked him out so bad?
00:19:44According to his logs, Columbus saw a huge flash in the sky.
00:19:49I don't care how tough you are, if you're sailing around with no clue where you are,
00:19:53and you see a massive flash right in front of you, you'd find me hiding below deck, chewing
00:19:58on a lemon or something.
00:20:01That's not the only sea mystery out there, not by a long shot.
00:20:04Heard of the Kraken?
00:20:06A giant squid that can swallow a whole ship?
00:20:09No?
00:20:10You're lucky.
00:20:11Imagine cruising on a ship, wind in your hair, hands on your hips like, you know, those old
00:20:16pirate movies, then a huge squid creeps up on you from deep down in the cold, dark water.
00:20:22It wraps its tentacles around the ship and drags the whole thing to the bottom of the
00:20:26ocean.
00:20:27Good thing you packed a life raft.
00:20:30How about a colossal sea serpent chasing your boat at full speed looking for a midday snack?
00:20:36That thing is called a leviathan, and you better hope it's not real.
00:20:40Or sirens, mean but beautiful creatures of the sea.
00:20:45They like to hang out on rocks and sing karaoke.
00:20:48Their magical voices attract sailors who sail their ships right into the sharp rocks.
00:20:53Now, mermaids, on the other hand, totally awesome.
00:20:57They like karaoke, too, but they're not into the whole ship smashing thing.
00:21:02Good old mermaids, they're real, right?
00:21:06And let's not forget peg-legged pirates, arrr, looting, raiding, saying arrr every two seconds,
00:21:12arrr.
00:21:13What else do those guys do all day?
00:21:16So back to our Italian friend, Columbus.
00:21:19Maybe he just saw a thunderstorm.
00:21:21Duh!
00:21:22Why didn't he think of that?
00:21:23Well, I'm not 600 years old, and I wasn't there.
00:21:27How on earth would I know?
00:21:29Weird thing is, he never mentioned any huge waves or heavy rain.
00:21:33No strong winds, either.
00:21:35Just a single flash in the sky.
00:21:37Maybe some dolphins were setting off fireworks or something.
00:21:41After the flash, Columbus wrote that his compass needle started dancing all over the
00:21:45place.
00:21:46This keeps getting weirder and weirder.
00:21:49His report ends with a friendly turtle with sunglasses jumping out of the water, pushing
00:21:53the three ships to shore, and everyone went out to get hot dogs.
00:21:58Only kidding.
00:21:59So what happened?
00:22:02Scientists now think they've got the answer.
00:22:04Drum roll, arrr, an asteroid crashed into the ocean.
00:22:09Case closed.
00:22:11But wait, what about that stuff with the compass?
00:22:13What does that have to do with an asteroid?
00:22:16Asteroids come in all different shapes and sizes, but they're like chocolate eggs, the
00:22:20best parts on the inside.
00:22:22They're packed full of minerals and metals worth trillions of dollars.
00:22:27Scientists are even trying to figure out how to land on a big one and mine it.
00:22:31It'd have to be a really big one.
00:22:33I'm talking about an asteroid the size of Rhode Island.
00:22:36Why?
00:22:37Chances are, it'd have a magnetic field around it, making it way easier to land on.
00:22:43Scientists think that the magnetic fields around some asteroids can last for millions
00:22:47of years.
00:22:49Mystery solved.
00:22:50Maybe.
00:22:51Captain Christopher Columbus' compass went cuckoo crazy because of an asteroid crashing
00:22:57right in front of him.
00:22:59That actually might explain some other strange Bermuda tales.
00:23:03About a hundred years ago, the USS Cyclops left Barbados on its way to Baltimore and
00:23:09sailed right through the middle of the Bermuda Triangle.
00:23:12It never arrived.
00:23:13Search teams spent ages looking, but they couldn't find anything.
00:23:18It just vanished, just like that.
00:23:20In 1945, five military planes vanished without a trace.
00:23:25They flew right over the Bermuda Triangle.
00:23:29So if there is an asteroid sitting at the bottom of the sea somewhere, why is it still
00:23:33causing problems 500 years later?
00:23:37Radar and old-school compasses rely on the Earth's magnetic field.
00:23:41Radar's how they track flights all around the world.
00:23:43A faulty radar reading?
00:23:45That would be a problem.
00:23:47Try putting a magnet near a compass and see what happens.
00:23:51The compass needle is its own little magnet, always pointing north.
00:23:55But if you put it next to a strong enough magnet, the needle will spin around to face it.
00:24:00What if that compass is all you've got to guide you to shore?
00:24:05Chinese ship captains were the first to invent compasses.
00:24:08Before that, people used to sail along the shore, or just to islands that they could see.
00:24:13Having compasses meant those early sailors could write down where they went, so other
00:24:18people could get there too.
00:24:20So now that we have all this new tech, the question is, is that asteroid even still down there?
00:24:27How would we get down there to find out?
00:24:30It wouldn't be the first-ever deep-sea dive.
00:24:32We've already been down the Mariana Trench, the deepest one on Earth.
00:24:36The Mariana Trench makes climbing Mount Everest look like a joke.
00:24:41Only two people have ever been down there.
00:24:44Because it's so deep, the water pressure is insane.
00:24:47The only way down is in a high-tech tank, something that won't crush in on itself under
00:24:52pressure.
00:24:53And that kind of thing doesn't come cheap.
00:24:56Down there?
00:24:57Just a lot of darkness, quiet and beauty, and a bunch of weird animals.
00:25:02The Bermuda Triangle isn't as deep as the Mariana Trench, so we might get down there
00:25:07one day.
00:25:08We might see that asteroid that Columbus saw, this time with millions of tiny fish on it
00:25:14who've made it their home.
00:25:16All those lost ships and planes that disappeared should be down there somewhere.
00:25:21Or we might see something we were never expecting.
00:25:25We might find ancient species of squid, sharks, and turtles with special skills like night
00:25:31vision.
00:25:32We might find gold.
00:25:34Loads of ships full of gold and silver sank on their way back to Europe from the Americas.
00:25:40Some wrecks had evidence of fire.
00:25:42Some were split in two.
00:25:44Most of them are still out there.
00:25:47Japanese divers once found an ancient underwater pyramid-looking thing.
00:25:51They don't even know for sure if it was natural or man-made.
00:25:56Up in the Baltic Sea, someone snapped a bizarre sonar image of… a spaceship?
00:26:02Or just a strange-looking rock?
00:26:05A Swiss lake was hiding a sweet vintage car.
00:26:09After it was dragged to shore and cleaned, it was sold for over $350,000.
00:26:14And the tires still had air in them!
00:26:17Japanese fishermen once found a small round boat that had a glass top on it.
00:26:21There was a red-haired woman inside.
00:26:24Some thought it was a fairy tale come true.
00:26:26Some thought she was a magical creature.
00:26:28And some thought she was a spy.
00:26:31The Bermuda Triangle sounds scary, but the islands near it are awesome.
00:26:37Bermuda is a tiny island where they speak English, and the other points of the triangle
00:26:41are the tip of Florida and the American island of Puerto Rico.
00:26:46More than 50 ships and 20 planes have disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle since the middle of
00:26:50the 19th century.
00:26:52This region isn't put on any paper map, and is not an official region of the Atlantic.
00:26:58This massive water area is located not far from the southeastern coast of the U.S., and
00:27:03still scares many sailors.
00:27:05But you aren't afraid, and want to prove that there is nothing special in this place.
00:27:10You sail to the center of the Bermuda Triangle on a small fishing boat.
00:27:14You turn off the engine and wait.
00:27:19Several hours pass.
00:27:21The sun goes below the horizon.
00:27:23Night comes.
00:27:24You're about to return to the shore, but suddenly it becomes too quiet.
00:27:29Then you hear a splash of water.
00:27:32You look overboard and see hundreds of fish swimming to the surface.
00:27:37Something big scared them away, something that comes straight from the depths.
00:27:42The next second, you notice big sparkling eyes and long tentacles reaching for the boat.
00:27:48It seems that one of the most terrible myths about the Bermuda Triangle turned out to be
00:27:53true.
00:27:54A huge squid, dragging ships to the bottom.
00:27:57Stories about these squids appeared long before the emergence of the Bermuda Triangle
00:28:01myths.
00:28:02For centuries, sailors from Norway and Greenland told stories about a scary sea monster, the
00:28:08Kraken.
00:28:09In those stories, the Kraken broke the decks of ships with its giant tentacles and dragged
00:28:14them to the bottom.
00:28:15The approach of this creature is impossible to see since it's coming to you not from the
00:28:19side, but from below.
00:28:22But all these were just stories.
00:28:24Only in the 19th century, scientific evidence of the existing of these monsters appeared.
00:28:29A beak of an unknown squid was found on the coast of Denmark.
00:28:33The size of the find was about 3 inches in diameter, which is about the size of a human
00:28:38palm.
00:28:39Then, it became clear that the Kraken was real, and it's just one variety of giant squid.
00:28:45Since then, more than 21 species of giant squid have been described, but the first video
00:28:51with this monster was recorded in 2004 in the waters of North Atlantic.
00:28:56Not far from the Bermuda Triangle, marine biologists used a lure to draw the squid out
00:29:00of the depths.
00:29:02The huge monster was about 30 feet long, which is about half a subway car.
00:29:06It suddenly appeared out of the ocean darkness and quickly attacked the lure, squeezing it
00:29:11with its tentacles.
00:29:13After that, many cases of squid have been recorded on photos and video.
00:29:18Large squids were washed up on the shore, swam past ships.
00:29:22According to some records, the largest monster ever found was 59 feet long and weighed almost
00:29:27a ton.
00:29:28This is the size of a big bus.
00:29:30Some scientists believe that giant squids can reach 150 feet in length, which is almost
00:29:36twice the size of a basketball court.
00:29:38But the big size is not enough to sink a ship.
00:29:41The first thing that helps squids do this is the surprise effect.
00:29:45Squids come from the depths, which means they can be seen from the deck.
00:29:48But the monster can see a boat from afar.
00:29:51It has the biggest eyes in the world.
00:29:54One eye is about the size of a basketball.
00:29:56The eyesight of a giant squid allows them to see prey in the black sea depths and from
00:30:00a big distance.
00:30:02Most sea creatures on the planet can't see in such conditions.
00:30:05So, the squid notices your ship and decides that it's food.
00:30:09It quickly approaches the boat and attacks with its tentacles.
00:30:13The squid has eight limbs and two extra longer tentacles the monster uses to bring food to
00:30:18the beak-shaped mouth.
00:30:19The others are covered with dozens of suction cups filled with sharp teeth.
00:30:23Nothing can escape if the squid grabs it.
00:30:26The squid wraps its tentacles around your boat, with the teeth on each arm.
00:30:30It bites the deck.
00:30:32Two long tentacles can grab you while you're running around in panic.
00:30:35The squid can rock the ship from side to side until one of its parts sinks in the water.
00:30:40You fight off two long tentacles and fall off your feet.
00:30:44The squid's eight arms are squeezing stronger.
00:30:47You can hear the boat's hull cracking.
00:30:49The squid is big, but still can't sink a large metal object.
00:30:53Possibly, it couldn't have sunk huge ships that disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle.
00:30:58You see how the squid swims away into the depths.
00:31:01You're lucky this time, but you definitely wouldn't handle two such monsters.
00:31:06The existence of giant squids was proven more than 150 years ago.
00:31:10But people still don't know anything about them.
00:31:13The fact is that they are some of the most elusive creatures on Earth.
00:31:16They swim fast, spending most of their time at depths of 1,300 to 3,000 feet.
00:31:21To descend there, people need sturdy submarines and bulky equipment that create a lot of noise.
00:31:26The squid will notice them much earlier and swim away.
00:31:30Scientists don't know anything about their behavior, social life, habits, or a distance
00:31:34they swim during the day.
00:31:36And most importantly, we don't know how many of them are hidden in the water.
00:31:40The ocean is only 5% explored.
00:31:43It's possible that millions of giant squids swim in the sea depths.
00:31:47Just imagine hundreds of giant tentacles reaching out to a group of ships sailing through the
00:31:51Bermuda Triangle.
00:31:52In the past centuries, they could easily sink an entire fleet, since the ships were made
00:31:57of wood and were lighter.
00:31:59Squids wrapped decks with their strong tentacles, made holes in the ships' bodies with their
00:32:03sharp beaks.
00:32:04Toothy suction cups could break the mass and tear the sails.
00:32:08The water was filling the holes and slowly rising to the deck.
00:32:12The ships sank in a matter of minutes.
00:32:15Survivors reached the shore and told everyone about huge monsters.
00:32:19This is how the legends of the Kraken appeared.
00:32:21Fortunately, now people have sonars and equipment for monitoring the sea space.
00:32:26You start the engine to swim to the shore and notice that about 30 tentacles are reaching
00:32:31out to you from the water.
00:32:32Three giant squids squeeze the boat from all sides and pull it down.
00:32:36It looks like there's no way out.
00:32:38You look overboard and see black eyes looking right at you.
00:32:42At this moment, you find a solution.
00:32:44Squids spend their whole life in darkness and are afraid of the light.
00:32:48Fortunately, you have a signal rocket.
00:32:51You use it to scare the monsters away.
00:32:53Squids go back down into the water, but apparently not for long.
00:32:57You release a few more rockets into the ocean and scream in fear.
00:33:01The red light illuminates the sea darkness and you see hundreds of moving tentacles.
00:33:06They quickly swim away from the fire to a safe distance.
00:33:09At full throttle, you're sailing to the shore and releasing all the signal fires into the
00:33:13water.
00:33:14You don't give the squids a chance to get close to you.
00:33:17Finally, you get to land, confident that you will never return to this place.
00:33:22The bad news is, these creatures swim not only in the Bermuda Triangle.
00:33:27People found giant squid in the oceans all over the world.
00:33:30Yeah, it's possible the giant squid is the main reason for the disappearance of ships,
00:33:35but this doesn't make the Bermuda Triangle a unique place.
00:33:38Boats and cargo ships disappear all over the Atlantic Ocean.
00:33:42The triangle is not even included in the top ten of such places.
00:33:46Also, this area is one of the most popular shipping routes of the Atlantic.
00:33:51And the more ships sail in one place, the more ships are lost.
00:33:55Many scientists believe the reason of the disappearances here is strong storms and hurricanes.
00:34:01Bermuda is located in an area of high pressure, which diverts thunderstorms towards the triangle.
00:34:07The waves reach such sizes here that they can turn ships over.
00:34:11Thunder and frequent flashes of lightning disable planes.
00:34:15The Earth's magnetic field is weakened at the location of the triangle.
00:34:19This field works as a shield, which repels solar particles.
00:34:22Here, solar radiation passes through the upper layers of the atmosphere and can negatively
00:34:28affect the electronics operation.
00:34:30Also, there is a theory that says that the Bermuda Triangle is the center of a magnetic anomaly.
00:34:37But scientists made many checks of the magnetic map of this region and haven't found any oddities.
00:34:44If you draw up a map, trace a line connecting the island of Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Miami,
00:34:50and back to Bermuda, what do you get?
00:34:53The infamous triangle, known for swallowing thousands of ships and aircraft over the centuries.
00:35:00But there's a new mystery to this already enigmatic place.
00:35:04Something's lurking deep in the waters below, and it's leaving bizarre clues of its existence.
00:35:11Splash!
00:35:12Your submarine hits the water's surface.
00:35:15You descend 100, 1000, 2000, 3000 feet.
00:35:20It's getting darker.
00:35:22The sub's walls creak as the pressure grows.
00:35:26Over 1400 PSI.
00:35:28It's like the weight of a grand piano squeezing every square inch of your body from all sides.
00:35:34You've made it to your destination.
00:35:37All that's left is to spot the beast.
00:35:41Just in time.
00:35:42Among the black void, you see a bright green glow off in the distance.
00:35:47It's getting closer.
00:35:49As it approaches, it gets bigger.
00:35:51This is it!
00:35:52The creature that's been leaving strange circular markings on fish,
00:35:56dolphins, whales, and even other sharks.
00:36:00Behold!
00:36:01The cookie cutter shark!
00:36:03Don't let its size fool you.
00:36:05It may be no longer than a bowling pin, but this creature is a parasite.
00:36:10It attaches itself to other marine animals using its neatly arranged serrated teeth.
00:36:16With one bite, it fills its belly, detaches, and goes on about its day.
00:36:22Its mobile snack also swims away with its life.
00:36:27The only evidence of this rendezvous, a cookie-shaped mark on its body.
00:36:33Don't assume you're safe in your submarine.
00:36:36These bold little guys have been known to go after subs too.
00:36:40You decide not to risk the shark punching a hole in the only thing
00:36:44keeping you from being squished to a pulp by the surrounding water.
00:36:47You journey on to meet other bizarre creatures lurking in the Bermuda Triangle.
00:36:53At twice the depth, you'll find the dragonfish.
00:36:57Unlike other deep-water inhabitants, these things produce light in the infrared range.
00:37:02Blue and green is what other fish stick to.
00:37:06This gives the dragonfish a huge advantage.
00:37:09It provides itself with light that other marine dwellers just can't perceive.
00:37:14Things that want to eat the dragonfish can't detect this light,
00:37:18as well as the critters the dragonfish likes to feed on.
00:37:22A truly unique deep-sea dweller is the vampire squid.
00:37:27Neither vampire nor squid, or octopus, this thing is a unique species of its own.
00:37:34It has the largest eyes compared to body size of any animal on the entire planet.
00:37:40When the vampire squid feels threatened,
00:37:42it curls its arms up and around its body.
00:37:45Essentially, the thing turns itself inside out.
00:37:50Another animal to avoid down here is the terrifying bobbit worm.
00:37:55It buries itself in the seafloor, leaving a small part of its body out.
00:37:59It waits for dinnertime with its pincer-like mouthparts open.
00:38:04What's on the menu?
00:38:06Other worms and fish that can be seven times bigger than the bobbit.
00:38:10It uses its five antennas to sense when lunch is close enough to snap.
00:38:16In an instant, the worm launches forward and grabs its lunch with its mouthparts.
00:38:22It's not done yet.
00:38:23Once it's got its jaws locked onto its lunch,
00:38:26the worm injects it with venom and pulls it down into the burrow to feast.
00:38:32One of the deepest trenches in the Bermuda Triangle is the tongue of the ocean.
00:38:37This is also the secret breeding grounds of tiger sharks.
00:38:41You'll instantly recognize them,
00:38:43thanks to those darker gray tiger stripes on their sides.
00:38:47They're the second largest predatory shark species after the great white.
00:38:52And with a big size comes a big appetite.
00:38:55Marine mammals, smaller sharks, stingrays, and green turtles are all on the menu.
00:39:02If you ever come face-to-face with a tiger shark,
00:39:05hopefully not,
00:39:06remember this.
00:39:07You can tell the fish's age by looking at its stripes.
00:39:11They fade over time,
00:39:13so the younger the shark, the more pronounced its stripes.
00:39:17There's plenty of zooplankton in the Bermuda Triangle.
00:39:21These are, usually, small organisms that are essential to the ocean's food chain.
00:39:27But get this, if nothing ate them and they were left to grow out of control,
00:39:31zooplankton would cover the entire world in layers and layers in just four months.
00:39:37Oh, and the largest type of zooplankton is the jellyfish.
00:39:42Jellyfish were around long before dinosaurs.
00:39:45You probably know your body is 60% water.
00:39:48A jellyfish is 95%.
00:39:51So if it gets washed onto the shore,
00:39:54after a few hours, most of its body just evaporates into the air.
00:39:58There's also a jellyfish that lives forever.
00:40:02The immortal jellyfish can revert itself back to its polyp stage and then grow again.
00:40:08Sounds like something from another planet, but it's no space jelly.
00:40:13Those do exist, by the way.
00:40:15Back in the 1990s, NASA raised jellyfish in space to see what zero gravity does to them.
00:40:22They were just fine living up there in the cosmos.
00:40:24When they came back down to Earth, though, they had trouble adjusting.
00:40:29The European eel hasn't been to space, but it is quite a globetrotter.
00:40:34It travels all the way from Europe to the Sargasso Sea, where the Bermuda Triangle is located.
00:40:40In the larval stage, it just drifts around the ocean for as long as three years sometimes.
00:40:46It's also the chameleon of the sea.
00:40:49It's also the chameleon of the sea.
00:40:52Over the years, the European eel changes color,
00:40:55going from translucent to yellow to metallic silver.
00:40:59They're nocturnal and secretive,
00:41:02pretty much the ideal companion to have when you rate the fridge at midnight.
00:41:07A giant squid over half the length of a football field once washed up on a Florida beach.
00:41:14Researchers suspected this behemoth came from the Atlantic Ocean near the Bermuda Triangle.
00:41:21Giant squids are the longest invertebrates, meaning they have no backbone.
00:41:25They also have the biggest eyes on Earth, ever.
00:41:29They're as large as a soccer ball.
00:41:32Another creature found near the Bermuda Triangle is starer's cave shrimp.
00:41:37They were so good at keeping to themselves
00:41:40that no one knew these creatures even existed until 2011.
00:41:45Some female cave shrimps carry an impressive number of eggs along with them.
00:41:49Scientists discovered one female had around 2,000 eggs attached to her body.
00:41:56The Bermuda petrel is the national bird of, yes, you guessed it, Bermuda.
00:42:01It's the second rarest seabird on the planet.
00:42:04In fact, people thought it was extinct until 1951
00:42:08when they spotted a few on the island.
00:42:11It has an eerie cry that'll send shivers down your spine.
00:42:17The Nassau grouper can only be found on the coasts of South Florida.
00:42:22This fish lies in wait and ambushes its lunch of other fish, crabs, and lobsters.
00:42:28It's sort of like a vacuum cleaner because it inhales its food through its huge mouth.
00:42:34The fish has a cool defense mechanism, too.
00:42:37Like the chameleon, it changes color when it feels it's in danger.
00:42:42Sometimes it takes on a lighter or darker shade of its own color to blend in with the environment.
00:42:48So you may spot a Nassau grouper, or you may not.
00:42:54If you happen to visit the Bermuda Triangle, you'll probably see a hammerhead shark.
00:42:59They use that iconic hammer-shaped head to pin their lunch, stingrays, onto the ocean floor.
00:43:07The shape of their head also gives them better vision.
00:43:10They can see almost 360 degrees all around, above and below them.
00:43:16Well, save for one blind spot right in front of their nose.
00:43:22The hawksbill sea turtle may not look intimidating,
00:43:25but this guy will eat anything it can get its bird-like beak around.
00:43:29Sea sponges, algae, and even venomous jellyfish.
00:43:34A lot of the stuff on their menu is inedible for most,
00:43:37but their body fat can absorb the venom and toxins, so they go unscathed.
00:43:44The Bermuda Triangle is also home to green glowworms.
00:43:48They're not really worms, but larvae.
00:43:51They produce that bright light from an organ near their tail.
00:43:55This light makes smaller creatures come toward them,
00:43:58making it easy for them to catch their lunch.
00:44:01Most of the time, they look pretty ordinary, but they have an oddly fixed schedule.
00:44:06Every third night, after the full moon, during the summer,
00:44:10at an exact time, the glowworm lights up.
00:44:14But back to more nightmarish creatures of the Bermuda Triangle.
00:44:18There's the goblin shark.
00:44:21Known as a living fossil because it's the only one left of its animal family.
00:44:27It's only about the length of your forearm and looks like nothing special.
00:44:32But watch closely as its lunch gets too close.
00:44:36Boom!
00:44:37The shark's jaw shoots out of its mouth and grabs onto the unlucky creature.
00:44:43Once the teeth have locked in, the jaw goes right back in the shark's mouth.
00:44:48And yes, you share the planet with this thing.
00:44:54The voyage started just like any other.
00:44:56The cargo ship SS Cotopaxi is making another journey to Havana, Cuba, to deliver coal.
00:45:03It's November 29, 1925.
00:45:06For Captain Meyer and his crew, leaving Charleston Port, South Carolina,
00:45:11it will be the last trip the ship ever makes.
00:45:14Its route ran through the Bermuda Triangle.
00:45:17Two days into the trip, the Cotopaxi sent out a distress signal.
00:45:21It had got caught up in a strong tropical storm and turned over on its side.
00:45:27The wind was very strong, and there was powerful lightning as well.
00:45:31Rain gradually filled the ship's hold.
00:45:33Then there was a bright white flash, and the ship disappeared without a trace.
00:45:39Later, its wreckage was found in the Gobi Desert,
00:45:42which is in a completely different part of the world.
00:45:46All 32 crew members, including the captain, were missing.
00:45:51Of course, the part about the Gobi Desert is fictional.
00:45:54For one of his movies, Steven Spielberg came up with the idea
00:45:57that the ship was moved there by aliens.
00:46:00Still, in real life, the ship was never found, and its crew really did disappear.
00:46:06It was officially declared missing a month afterward, and nobody could find the wreck.
00:46:13It seems like a classic case of mysterious things going on in the Bermuda Triangle.
00:46:19But most mysteries are solved sooner or later.
00:46:22In 2020, the Cotopaxi was found.
00:46:25A man named Michael Barnett had moved to Florida to study shipwrecks off the coast.
00:46:31One wreck in particular really caught his attention.
00:46:34It was much larger than the others, and the locals called it the Bear Wreck.
00:46:39It was about 40 miles from St. Augustine in northern Florida,
00:46:43but no one had ever managed to identify the rusty hull.
00:46:47So Michael started to do some detective work.
00:46:50He measured the size of the shipwreck and started working through all the information he could find.
00:46:56He researched hundreds of old newspapers, leafed through insurance records,
00:47:00and looked at artifacts found on the wreck.
00:47:03After hundreds of hours of hard work, Michael was sure it was the Cotopaxi.
00:47:09But a few years before, there had been a rumor that the same ship had been found
00:47:13off the coast of Cuba.
00:47:15The Coast Guard found the wreck of a cargo ship about the same size
00:47:19that looked a lot like the one lost in 1925.
00:47:22Michael was sure they were wrong, so he teamed up with some science journalists
00:47:27and kept investigating.
00:47:29Soon, they discovered something that seemed to confirm Michael's belief.
00:47:33Divers found brass valves with the letters SV on them in the wreckage of the ship.
00:47:39Michael suggested these initials referred to Scott Valve Manufacturing Company.
00:47:44The headquarters of this company was in Michigan,
00:47:46not far from where the Cotopaxi had been built.
00:47:50The company had probably supplied parts for the Cotopaxi.
00:47:53So the puzzle seemed to be solved.
00:47:56The bear wreck was really the missing cargo ship.
00:48:00But Michael still needed to work out why the ship had sunk.
00:48:03Did something mysterious really happen to the Cotopaxi in the Bermuda Triangle?
00:48:09Later, Michael found the testimony of the ship's carpenter among some old papers.
00:48:14The carpenter claimed that the hatches covering the coal on the ship
00:48:18had been in a terrible condition before it sank.
00:48:21Repair work on the covers wasn't finished before the crew got the order to sail to Cuba.
00:48:27So if the hatch covers were still broken during the trip,
00:48:30water could've easily gotten on board.
00:48:33This water probably flooded the hull during the tropical storm.
00:48:37This was the real reason why the Cotopaxi went down.
00:48:41There was really nothing mysterious about it.
00:48:43It was just a mistake made by ordinary people.
00:48:47But this is just one example out of dozens, or even hundreds,
00:48:52where ships and planes have gone missing in the Bermuda Triangle.
00:48:56We still can't explain some of these incidents.
00:48:58It seems like there really is something weird going on there.
00:49:03One of these strange events happened in 1948.
00:49:07A passenger jet was headed for Miami from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
00:49:12It disappeared in the same area as the Cotopaxi.
00:49:15The 32 people on board vanished without a trace.
00:49:19The weather was clear throughout the flight,
00:49:22but experts think that when the plane was about 50 miles from the coast,
00:49:26it could've been hit by a strong wind that knocked it off course.
00:49:31Years later, a similar plane was found in the area of the Bermuda Triangle.
00:49:35But because no one could work out the registration,
00:49:38it was impossible to say for sure if it was the same one.
00:49:43Something even stranger occurred not long before, in 1945.
00:49:48Five planes went missing all at the same time.
00:49:51Some trainee pilots were practicing their navigation skills.
00:49:55But when they'd finished, it seems they couldn't find their way back home and disappeared.
00:50:01Many people assume they just ran out of fuel.
00:50:03This seems likely, but still, the circumstances were really strange.
00:50:08The trainees were being supervised by an experienced pilot who had 2,500 hours of flight time.
00:50:15He would never have let a group of newbie pilots get that far away from their base.
00:50:20Even now, people still debate what could've happened.
00:50:23Some insist the pilots ran into something supernatural out there in the Bermuda Triangle.
00:50:29But who knows?
00:50:32And here's another freaky thing that happened there which no expert has been able to explain.
00:50:37Time travel.
00:50:39In 1970, Bruce Gurnon was flying a plane from Andros Island to the Florida coast.
00:50:45When he was at 11,500 feet, a giant cloud appeared in front of him.
00:50:50It kept getting bigger and bigger, and he had no choice but to fly through it.
00:50:55As soon as he did, the plane was surrounded by darkness.
00:50:59It was as if the day had turned to night in a split second.
00:51:03Suddenly, Bruce began to see white flashes of light around him.
00:51:07They were so bright that they lit up the entire sky.
00:51:10But they weren't lightning bolts, although he couldn't really explain what they were.
00:51:15The plane continued through the strange cloud for almost a half an hour.
00:51:20Bruce noticed that the cloud changed shape during this time.
00:51:23The space around the plane turned into a tunnel.
00:51:26Then the tunnel started narrowing.
00:51:28Bruce became really tense as he tried to cope with the plane's controls.
00:51:33All his instruments and navigation equipment were going crazy,
00:51:36and the electronics stopped working.
00:51:39Then a white light appeared at the end of the tunnel.
00:51:42Just like in the movies, the plane escaped the closing cloud tunnel at the very last second.
00:51:48Everything was fine, but now Bruce found himself in some white fog.
00:51:52He had no idea where he was.
00:51:55Then he managed to contact ground control.
00:51:58He was shocked when he learned that his plane was already in the airspace above Miami.
00:52:04It seemed that something impossible had happened.
00:52:07Bruce was meant to cover a distance of about 250 miles during the flight.
00:52:11This usually took one and a half hours.
00:52:14But he had managed it in just 47 minutes.
00:52:17Almost two times faster than normal.
00:52:19When Bruce landed, he went to check the amount of fuel left in the tank.
00:52:24It turned out he'd used up a lot less than the normal amount of fuel as well.
00:52:29Could there be a logical explanation for the time-traveling plane?
00:52:34Well, records show that a large number of sunspots were detected on the surface of the sun that day.
00:52:39And there was a strong solar wind.
00:52:42This could easily have made the electronics and devices on the plane go crazy.
00:52:46But what about the mysterious cloud?
00:52:49The Florida coast is a place where two large air currents meet.
00:52:53One has a high pressure and the other is a low pressure one.
00:52:57This causes a lot of storm clouds in the area.
00:53:00But people still debate how Bruce was able to cover the distance so quickly.
00:53:05Some people say that some kind of mysterious dark energy was involved.
00:53:10Others say it was a gravitational anomaly that curved space and time.
00:53:15Others think that Bruce is just a fraud.
00:53:18We still don't know the truth.
00:53:20So, is there really something supernatural about the Bermuda Triangle?
00:53:25Or is it all just coincidences and made-up stories?
00:53:29The truth is that no more planes and ships disappear in the Bermuda Triangle
00:53:34than anywhere else in the world.
00:53:37April 10th, 1912.
00:53:40You're on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in a small port town.
00:53:44Hundreds of people, and you among them, are going to board the huge majestic ship.
00:53:49It's three times as long as the Statue of Liberty is tall.
00:53:53The ship is considered the most advanced and unsinkable watercraft of its time.
00:53:57You can see hundreds of luxury cabin windows on its deck
00:54:01and the Titanic inscription on the magnificent iron hull.
00:54:05This day, the famous superliner set off on its first and last voyage
00:54:10from Southampton to New York.
00:54:12But now, you'll see an alternate story.
00:54:15You can hear a crew member announcing the start of the Titanic's trip.
00:54:19The ship sails from Africa to Bermuda,
00:54:22and the cause of its catastrophe will not be an iceberg at all.
00:54:26For four days, Titanic sails through North Atlantic waters.
00:54:30The sun warms the ship so much that during the day,
00:54:33all the passengers sit inside the ship.
00:54:35In the evening, when a cool breeze descends on the ocean,
00:54:39all the people go up on deck to watch the beautiful red sunset.
00:54:43Midnight, April 15th.
00:54:45You're sitting in your cabin reading a book.
00:54:47You're usually asleep at this time,
00:54:49but right now, you're just flipping through page after page.
00:54:53You close the book and look around the cabin.
00:54:55You feel like someone's watching you.
00:54:58You get up and break out into a cold sweat.
00:55:01An inexplicable feeling of anxiety permeates your body and causes goosebumps.
00:55:06You look out the cabin window where the ocean spray is banging the glass,
00:55:10but you can't see anything.
00:55:12There's a thick fog outside.
00:55:14You leave the cabin.
00:55:16In addition to you, several passengers also left their beds
00:55:19because of a heightened sense of danger.
00:55:22They greet you and ask what's wrong, but no one knows.
00:55:25You head to the stairs to go out on the deck to see the situation.
00:55:29At this point, the floor goes out from under your feet.
00:55:33A strong push makes you fall.
00:55:35A rumble reverberates through the Titanic.
00:55:38You get up and see more and more people going out from their cabins.
00:55:42You run up the stairs and meet a crew member.
00:55:44He doesn't tell you anything, but his eyes are wide with fear.
00:55:48You go up on deck and can hardly see anything.
00:55:51A thick, wet fog has settled over the ship.
00:55:54Several passengers are holding their heads as if they have a headache.
00:55:58You see the captain and ask him what happened.
00:56:00The captain admits that he has no idea where you are.
00:56:04You see a compass in his hand.
00:56:06The arrow turns in different directions.
00:56:08It's impossible to determine where exactly the ship is now.
00:56:12Interestingly, there was no such thing as the Bermuda Triangle before 1964,
00:56:17but the first reports of missing ships in this area
00:56:20date back to the middle of the 19th century.
00:56:23Another push.
00:56:24This time, you've managed to stay on your feet.
00:56:27It felt like something big just hit the ship.
00:56:29You run to the railing at the edge of the deck and stare overboard.
00:56:33Through the white fog, you notice a huge shark fin.
00:56:37You haven't seen the full size of the shark,
00:56:39but from what you've seen, it must be as long as a train car.
00:56:43The shark swims away, but after a few seconds, you can see its fin again.
00:56:47It quickly approaches the ship and grabs the iron hull with its huge jaws.
00:56:52The deck is shaking.
00:56:54You can hear the grinding of metal.
00:56:56It seems this huge predator just made a hole in the hull.
00:57:00Only one creature on the planet can do this.
00:57:03The Megalodon.
00:57:04It's an ancient marine predator that measured almost 60 feet in length.
00:57:09Megalodon had no competition in the ocean.
00:57:11It was at the top of the food chain.
00:57:13It's believed the shark disappeared millions of years ago,
00:57:16but the ocean is only 5% explored.
00:57:20Here, it's alive and swimming in the mysterious waters of the Bermuda Triangle.
00:57:26Everyone aboard the ship is panicking.
00:57:28People from the lower decks are running upstairs.
00:57:31The Titanic slowly sinks and tilts to the side.
00:57:34Everyone goes to the lifeboats,
00:57:36but no one dares to get in them while the huge ancient monster is around.
00:57:41The ship's bow submerges under the water.
00:57:43You stand on the left side of the deck and see the Megalodon bite off pieces of the iron hull.
00:57:49You shout to the people in the stern section that the Megalodon is busy
00:57:53and they have time to evacuate.
00:57:55The first rescue boats with passengers go down on the water.
00:57:58Some passengers just jump overboard.
00:58:01Fortunately, the water is much warmer than the place where the Titanic actually sank.
00:58:06You put on a life jacket and jump too.
00:58:09The Megalodon attacks the ship and drags it deeper into the water.
00:58:13The smell of the Titanic's kitchen must have attracted it.
00:58:16You find yourself among the ship's flotsam and lifeboats.
00:58:19The fog's finally rising.
00:58:21The starry sky and the moon illuminate the sea's surface.
00:58:25People help you to climb on board a rescue boat.
00:58:28Everyone tries to sail as far away from the sinking ship as possible.
00:58:32You see the huge shark swimming around the Titanic.
00:58:35At this moment, something distracts it and the predator goes away.
00:58:39More than half of the ship is already under the surface.
00:58:42The second part looks like a candle sticking out of the water.
00:58:45The ocean is calm.
00:58:46The sky is clear and cloudless.
00:58:48There's no wind.
00:58:50From the side, you see a huge wave growing behind the Titanic.
00:58:54It's about 50 feet high, like a five-story building.
00:58:57It knocks the ship down as easily as if it was made of paper.
00:59:02The monster wave dissolves in the water as quickly and unexpectedly as it appeared.
00:59:07You've just witnessed a rogue wave.
00:59:10This phenomenon occurs all over the world.
00:59:13Enormous waves suddenly appear, demolish ships, and disappear without a trace.
00:59:18Scientists still can't determine their exact nature.
00:59:21But according to the most popular theory,
00:59:24these waves are formed by kinetic vampirism.
00:59:27Under certain natural conditions, waves accumulate and exchange kinetic energy.
00:59:33Among all the waves out there,
00:59:35there is one vampire wave that absorbs the energy of all the others.
00:59:39When a lot of energy is accumulated, a huge wave grows and splashes it all out.
00:59:45Some believe the frequent disappearance of ships in the Bermuda Triangle
00:59:48occurred because of rogue waves.
00:59:51The people on the boats calm down.
00:59:53Someone sends a flare into the sky.
00:59:55You look at the ocean and see the triangular fin of the Megalodon emerging from the water.
01:00:01It's the size of a sailboat, and it's coming your way!
01:00:05You row the oars as fast as you can.
01:00:07People are screaming and calling for help.
01:00:09There's no chance of escape.
01:00:11The legendary monster is getting closer and closer.
01:00:15The shark's head peeks out from under the surface.
01:00:17It opens its huge maw filled with hundreds of sharp teeth.
01:00:21Each of them is the size of your palm.
01:00:24The boat will fit entirely inside the shark's mouth.
01:00:27It can swallow you whole.
01:00:29The shark stops and closes its mouth at arm's length from the boat.
01:00:34You can see the water bubbling around you.
01:00:36From the ocean depths, several giant tentacles lash out and wrap around the Megalodon.
01:00:43They pull the shark down.
01:00:44You look over the side and see a purple glow with a black circle in the center.
01:00:49Someone on the boat notices it too.
01:00:52People start screaming,
01:00:53It's looking at us!
01:00:55A woman shouts.
01:00:56After a second, you get goosebumps, and a shiver runs through your entire body.
01:01:01This purple glow is something's eye, and the black circle is the pupil.
01:01:07The creature that is looking at you right now is so big that the boat seems like a grain of rice to it.
01:01:13It's the Kraken!
01:01:16The giant squid, an ancient monster that sank hundreds of ships,
01:01:20but whose existence has not been proven by anyone yet.
01:01:24Fortunately, the boat you're sitting in is too small to interest the Kraken.
01:01:28You can see its eye moving deeper away.
01:01:31Huge tentacles pull the struggling Megalodon into the depths.
01:01:36An hour passes, and another big superliner arrives at the wreck of the Titanic.
01:01:41All the passengers are rescued.
01:01:43You look back at the calm sea, at the place where the Titanic recently sailed.
01:01:47You climb aboard the rescue ship and promise yourself never to go on a sea voyage again.
01:01:57In 1945, five TBF Avenger aircraft took flight for a routine training exercise
01:02:04around the Bermuda Triangle.
01:02:06In the middle of the exercise, the planes were struck by intense rain and heavy winds,
01:02:11despite the clear weather forecast.
01:02:13The pilots became extremely disoriented,
01:02:16and radioed the base to report that their navigational equipment had stopped working.
01:02:21The last thing the base heard was,
01:02:23when the first plane drops below 10 gallons, we'll all go down together.
01:02:28And then, static.
01:02:30The five planes and their 14 crew members were never seen or heard from again.
01:02:36On his very first voyage to the New World in 1492,
01:02:40Christopher Columbus sailed through the Bermuda Triangle.
01:02:44Columbus reported that, one night, when he was on the deck of the ship,
01:02:48he noticed a giant light appear in the distance, unlike anything he'd ever seen before.
01:02:53Columbus looked at his compass for direction, and it gave off erratic readings.
01:02:58You might've noticed that the Bermuda Triangle doesn't appear on any world map.
01:03:02This is because official institutions refuse to acknowledge that the area actually exists.
01:03:09A popular theory suggests that rogue waves are responsible for the many disappearances.
01:03:15Rogue waves are called extreme storm waves by scientists.
01:03:18They occur when different weather patterns take place at the same time
01:03:22and cause large, unexpected waves.
01:03:25Witnesses say that the waves look like giant walls of water.
01:03:29These waves could explain why ships go down fast and without leaving any trace.
01:03:34The Bermuda Triangle is home to some pretty intense and unexpected weather.
01:03:40Storms build up quickly and unexpectedly, then disappear soon after.
01:03:45If you blink, you might miss it.
01:03:47This could explain why few distress signals are issued.
01:03:50Pilots and sailors never saw the weather coming.
01:03:54No one knows exactly how many ships and planes have disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle.
01:03:59The rough estimate is 50 ships and 20 planes.
01:04:03Most of the time, the disappearances had no explanation,
01:04:06and no wreckage has ever been left behind.
01:04:10Another bizarre theory trying to solve the Bermuda Triangle mystery comes from Charlie Berlitz.
01:04:16He insists that the area is home to the lost city of Atlantis.
01:04:20The missing ships and planes and malfunctioning equipment, according to him,
01:04:24were all caused by rays of energy let out by the special energy crystals that power Atlantis.
01:04:31While this sounds silly, Berlitz's theory was convincing enough
01:04:34that over 20 million people bought his book worldwide.
01:04:39In the year 1800, a large sailing vessel called the USS Pickering
01:04:43departed from the U.S. on its way to the West Indies.
01:04:46The ship sailed into the Bermuda Triangle along with its 90-man crew and was never heard from
01:04:52again. The USS Pickering was the first ever confirmed ship to vanish in the Bermuda Triangle.
01:04:58It's believed that the ship was taken out by a storm,
01:05:01but because no wreckage was ever found, we'll never know for sure.
01:05:06When the TBF Avenger planes went missing, a massive search operation was conducted.
01:05:12Boats and planes searched the Bermuda Triangle for any signs of the aircraft.
01:05:17One of the boats searching was a PBM-5 Mariner airboat. The airboat took flight at 7.27 pm
01:05:24and called in a routine radio message 3 minutes later. Then, it was never heard from again.
01:05:30No trace was ever found of the rescue airboat or the five Avenger aircraft.
01:05:35An enormous investigation was launched into the disappearance of all these vehicles,
01:05:40but nothing was ever discovered.
01:05:42This particular area of the ocean is one of the most heavily traveled shipping routes in the
01:05:47world. Some skeptics believe that this fact solves the mystery. Statistically, the busier the area,
01:05:53the higher the frequency of accidents and disappearances. While this makes sense,
01:05:58it's not the frequency of disappearances that's responsible
01:06:01for the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. It's the lack of explanation or wreckage found.
01:06:08On the ocean floor, decomposing organisms let off large concentrations of methane gas
01:06:14that gets trapped under the water. This gas can build up until, boom, it ruptures.
01:06:20The gas surges up to the surface and erupts. If a ship was in the area of one of these ruptures,
01:06:25the water would become much less dense and cause the ship to sink rapidly and without warning.
01:06:31Scientists believe this could be the cause of the many disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle.
01:06:36While this theory makes a lot of sense, it doesn't seem too likely.
01:06:40The U.S. Geological Survey has stated that no large releases of gas are believed to have
01:06:46occurred in this area for the past 15,000 years. The ocean floor is made of rocks containing a lot
01:06:54of magnetite. It's more like iron. Magnetic fields react to high concentrations of magnetite on the
01:07:01ocean floor, which may start a sort of conflict between the two. It can often lead to various
01:07:06weather anomalies and, as a result, navigation issues. And, naturally, any changes in the ocean
01:07:13floor or the Earth's magnetic fields influence the Bermuda Triangle a lot. Since the magnetic
01:07:19field is constantly moving, it might be also taking the Bermuda Triangle with it. Now that
01:07:26people know where the triangle is, it's easy to avoid it. It supposedly moves eastward together
01:07:32with the magnetic poles. But scientists still can't answer where exactly it will be in a couple
01:07:37of years. Some people blame all the disasters on the extraterrestrial paranormal activity.
01:07:43Others suppose it's all about raging natural phenomena.
01:07:48There's another triangle in Lake Michigan. Just like the one near Bermuda, the Michigan
01:07:53Triangle got its shady reputation for some disappearances. The first recorded one dates
01:07:59back to 1679. A large vessel, one of the largest of that time, set out on an expedition. Yet,
01:08:06once it got in the sinister triangle, it never came back. Much later, an aircraft disappeared
01:08:13in this triangle. The skies are usually very clear there, but back in 1883, some people
01:08:19witnessed abnormal things in the area. Some claim to have seen large blocks of ice falling
01:08:25from the skies, and the crew even managed to save one as hard proof. Meanwhile, the Pacific
01:08:31Ocean Mystery Area is another sinister triangle. Off the south coast of Japan, not far away from
01:08:37Tokyo, there's a sea where plenty of ships met their doom, disappearing without a trace in these
01:08:43waters. They call it the Devil's Triangle. Some scientists believe the cause of anomalies
01:08:50is the environmental changes. Also, there's a really high concentration of methane hydrates
01:08:55on the bottom of the ocean in the Pacific Triangle area. You're deviating from your original course
01:09:02and sailing in the wrong direction. There's the Caribbean Sea near the triangle, peppered with
01:09:08small islands. The seafloor here isn't deep. The ship can get in shallow waters. And now,
01:09:13the ship is stuck on a shoal, and you have no idea where you are. If this were the 21st century,
01:09:20the ship's captain would be able to reach the shore using GPS and other modern navigation. But
01:09:26the most interesting thing is that the compass would work correctly this time, since the magnetic
01:09:31north pole hasn't already coincided with the true one for a long time in the territory of the
01:09:37Bermuda Triangle. The agonic line is somewhere far away from here. There are no problems with
01:09:43navigation now, but for some reason, this is where ships disappear. In fact, not just here,
01:09:50throughout the Atlantic Ocean, there are places where many more ships were gone. The Bermuda
01:09:55Triangle is not even in the top 10 of such places. One of the main reasons why many ships are lost
01:10:01here is that one of the most popular shipping routes in the Atlantic passes through the Bermuda
01:10:06Triangle. And the more ships in one place, the more shipwrecks. Simple probability. Then, it just
01:10:13starts getting weird. Other theories say that there's a space-time rift in this region. Ships
01:10:19and planes fall into this rift and end up in the past or the future. But for some reason,
01:10:25there's not a single proof of this myth. There's no reason to think that the rift is hidden somewhere
01:10:30here. The base of an extraterrestrial civilization is located in the Bermuda Triangle. Visitors from
01:10:37other galaxies steal sea vessels along with the crew, so no one finds the wreckage of the ships.
01:10:43This is also a popular myth that has no scientific justification.
01:10:48The Kraken lives somewhere in the Triangle. It's a huge squid that sinks ships and also is a legend
01:10:54that sailors tell each other. However, gigantic squids live in the depths of the ocean. They can
01:11:00grow to the size of half a train car, but no cases have ever been recorded where they sunk a large
01:11:05vessel. And in the area of the Bermuda Triangle, they have never ever been seen. People in the
01:11:12past didn't know about the existence of these creatures, so when they saw them for the first
01:11:16time, they described them as huge, terrible monsters. Giant squids are some of the most
01:11:22elusive creatures on Earth, and scientists had to use sonar equipment to find them. They don't
01:11:27like to leave the dark depths and are likely to be afraid of the sound of any ship. So,
01:11:33that should squash the squid as a suspect. The Bermuda Triangle is one of the most heavily
01:11:40traveled shipping routes in the world. Some skeptics believe that this fact solves the
01:11:44Bermuda Triangle mystery. Statistically, the busier the area, the higher the frequency of
01:11:49accidents and disappearances. While this makes sense, it's not the frequency of disappearances
01:11:55that's responsible for the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. It's the lack of explanation or wreckage
01:12:00found. On his very first voyage to the New World in 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed through the
01:12:08Bermuda Triangle. Columbus reported that one night, when he was on the deck of the ship,
01:12:13he noticed a giant light appear in the distance unlike anything he'd ever seen before. Columbus
01:12:19looked at his compass for direction, and it gave off erratic readings. You might've noticed that
01:12:24the Bermuda Triangle doesn't appear on any world map. This is because official institutions refuse
01:12:30to acknowledge that the area actually exists. No one exactly knows how many ships and planes
01:12:37have disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle. The rough estimate is 50 ships and 20 planes. Most
01:12:43of the time, the disappearances had no explanation and no wreckage has ever been left behind.
01:12:49When the TBF Avenger planes went missing, a massive search operation was conducted.
01:12:55Boats and planes searched the Bermuda Triangle for any signs of the aircraft.
01:12:59One of the boats searching was a PBM-5 Mariner airboat. The airboat took flight at 7.27 pm
01:13:05and called in a routine radio message 3 minutes later. Then, it was never heard from again. No
01:13:12trace was ever found of the rescue airboat or the five Avenger aircraft. A huge investigation
01:13:19was launched into the disappearance of all these vehicles, but nothing was ever discovered.
01:13:25The Bermuda Triangle is home to some pretty intense and unexpected weather. Storms build up
01:13:30quickly and unexpectedly, then disappear soon after. If you blink, you might miss it. This
01:13:36could explain why few distress signals are issued. Pilots and sailors never saw the weather coming.
01:13:42A popular theory suggests that rogue waves are responsible for the many disappearances.
01:13:47Rogue waves are called extreme storm waves by scientists. They occur when different weather
01:13:52patterns take place at the same time and cause large unexpected waves that reach up to 100 feet
01:13:58tall. Witnesses say that the waves look like giant walls of water.
01:14:03These waves could explain why ships go down fast and without leaving any trace.
01:14:09Just off the coast of Japan, you'll find the Bermuda Triangle of the Pacific Ocean.
01:14:14They call it the Devil's Triangle. Between 1950 and 1954, 9 ships disappeared in this area without
01:14:21leaving a trace. The ship Kaio Maru 5 was sent to investigate these unexplained disappearances
01:14:27when it also vanished. After this incident, the Japanese authorities
01:14:31labeled the area as a danger zone, and sailors were encouraged to avoid it.
01:14:38Some people blame all disasters on the extraterrestrial paranormal activity.
01:14:43Others suppose it's all about raging natural phenomena. Some scientists believe the cause
01:14:48of anomalies is the environmental changes. Also, there's a really high concentration
01:14:53of methane hydrates on the bottom of the ocean in the Pacific Bermuda area.
01:14:58This gas tends to set off, and when it happens, bubbles start forming on the surface of the water.
01:15:04These gas eruptions can interrupt the ability to float and can easily sink a ship. Because
01:15:09of this chemical reaction, there won't be even a trace left. Underwater volcanoes are said to be
01:15:16another possible explanation for the Japanese Dragon's Triangle. In fact, they can take down
01:15:22even small islands. Luckily, nobody lives there. It's a pretty common thing in this area
01:15:28that some of them disappear underwater and others appear out of the blue because of seismic
01:15:33activity. You'll never find the Dragon's Triangle on any official map of the world,
01:15:38so nobody's quite sure about how large it is in reality.
01:15:43In July 2015, two teenagers disappeared after setting sail off the coast of Florida. There's
01:15:50some mystery about what the two teens were really getting up to. They told their parents
01:15:55that they were just going to fish. But they told their friends that they were crossing to the
01:15:59Bahamas. Shortly after they left, a line of thunderstorms moved towards the area, and the
01:16:05boys were never heard from again. A massive search was conducted, but sadly, nothing was found.
01:16:11One year later, the pair's boat was found off the coast of Bermuda with a broken iPhone
01:16:16and some personal effects left inside. One of the most popular and bizarre theories
01:16:23trying to solve the Bermuda Triangle mystery comes from Charles Berlitz. He insists that
01:16:28the area is home to the lost city of Atlantis. The missing ships and planes and malfunctioning
01:16:34equipment, according to him, were all caused by rays of energy let out by the special energy
01:16:39crystals that power Atlantis. While this sounds silly, Berlitz's theory was convincing enough
01:16:45that over 20 million people bought his book worldwide. Previously, the compass wouldn't
01:16:51work well in the Bermuda Triangle since the lines of the two poles coincided here,
01:16:56true north and magnetic north. But if you fall into this line, your compass will behave strangely.
01:17:03But the magnetic north is constantly shifting, and now it's far beyond the triangle.
01:17:08No legend says pirates of the last centuries operate in the Bermuda Triangle, or that the
01:17:13flying Dutchman makes other ships disappear. A popular theory is that ships travel to the
01:17:19distant past or future through a time portal in the Bermuda Triangle. Fortunately, these are all
01:17:25myths. Just imagine hundreds of giant tentacles reaching out to a group of ships sailing through
01:17:31the Bermuda Triangle. In the past centuries, they could easily sink an entire fleet since the ships
01:17:37were made of wood and were lighter. Squids wrapped decks with their strong tentacles, made holes in
01:17:42the ships' hulls with their sharp beaks. Toothy suction cups could break the masts and tear the
01:17:47sails. The water was filling the holes and slowly rising to the deck. The ships sank in a matter of
01:17:53minutes. Survivors reached the shore and told everyone about huge monsters. This is how the
01:17:59legends of the Kraken appeared. Fortunately, now people have sonars and equipment for monitoring
01:18:04the sea space. They say the main reason why this place is so enigmatic must be the magnetic fields
01:18:10that form this ominous triangle. Ocean floor is made of rocks containing a lot of magnetite.
01:18:17It's more like iron. Magnetic fields react to the high concentration of magnetite on the ocean floor,
01:18:23which may start a sort of conflict between the two. It can often lead to various weather anomalies
01:18:29and, as a result, navigation issues. And naturally, any changes in the ocean floor
01:18:35or the Earth's magnetic fields influence the Bermuda Triangle a lot. Magnetic fields
01:18:42tend to shift their position, so do tectonic plates and even the continents, even though we
01:18:47never notice it. The skies are usually very clear there, but back in 1883, some people witnessed
01:18:55abnormal things in the area. Some claim to have seen large blocks of ice falling from the skies,
01:19:01and the crew even managed to save one as hard proof.
01:19:04Seems like the Bermuda Triangle has an alternate not only on Earth, but even in space. Spacecraft
01:19:11usually don't disappear into thin air, though, like there's no air. This anomalous area is
01:19:16really large and stretches right above the South Atlantic. It occupies the area from Chile to
01:19:21Zimbabwe and sits right at the point where Van Allen radiation belts are the closest to the
01:19:27surface of our planet. The Earth has two such belts, which come in handy trapping the particles
01:19:32that shoot in from the Sun. They do a great job protecting the Earth from radiation. The magnetic
01:19:38field there is lower, so it allows the Earth's radiation belt to come closer to the surface.
01:19:43Whenever a satellite passes by, it will be exposed to radiation, which might lead to
01:19:48serious damage. So, no satellite can take pictures of it. The South Atlantic Anomaly
01:19:54is part of the Earth where natural radiation just flows out of control. Still, there is little
01:20:00evidence that all these triangles are really dangerous. Many believe the Bermuda Triangle
01:20:05itself has been proven time and again to be nothing but a work of fiction. In fact, some
01:20:11shipwrecks, such as the Ellen Austin, gained popularity in the middle of the 20th century,
01:20:16while nobody even thought of drawing a triangle in the Bermuda area before that. The mystery was
01:20:22popularized by science fiction writers and became a common myth, while no serious research proved it
01:20:28any more dangerous than other parts of the world's ocean. So, the crew of the Ellen Austin back in
01:20:331881 weren't even aware of the Bermuda Triangle back then, let alone afraid of it. What do you think?
01:20:43Ships and planes disappearing without a trace. Passengers never seen or heard from again.
01:20:49Reports of strange lights in the sky.
01:20:53No, these aren't scenes from an upcoming Hollywood blockbuster, but some of the strange
01:20:57occurrences reported for over a century in an area ominously dubbed the Graveyard of Lake Ontario,
01:21:04also referred to as Canada's Bermuda Triangle or the Marysburg Vortex. It stretches across a
01:21:11portion of Lake Ontario from Kingston to Prince Edward County in Canada and down to Oswego,
01:21:17New York in the U.S. The tales about this area can be as chilling as the frigid lake water on
01:21:23which they took place. The most unsettling story involves the schooner called the Bavaria. It was
01:21:291889 and the ship was being towed across the lake. Rough waters severed the tow rope and the Bavaria
01:21:36floated away. Luckily, the schooner was later found safe and fully intact, but there was one
01:21:43thing missing, the crew. Not a single person was found on board. What makes the story even more
01:21:49bizarre is that the dinner table was set, a loaf of bread was discovered, freshly baked, and the
01:21:55captain's money and his papers were fully accounted for. There was even a pet canary happily chirping
01:22:01away as if nothing was amiss. What happened to the crew? We may never know, and this was not a unique
01:22:08incident. Just over a decade later in 1900, three ships, the Annie Minis, the Picton, and the Acacia
01:22:17were sailing across the lake, but only two would make it to their final destination.
01:22:22The third one, the Picton, was speeding ahead of the others when it simply vanished. According to
01:22:28a cook on the Annie Minis, we were well out into the lake and making good time when all of a sudden
01:22:34we saw the Picton's top sails coming off, and then her lower sails settled, and then while we stood
01:22:40and watched, the Picton just disappeared. It's possible that the ship sank, as there was some
01:22:46wreckage later seen in the water, but the ship itself was never found and none of its crew ever
01:22:51located. A few weeks later, a bottle with a note inside was discovered in Sackett's Harbor, New York.
01:22:58The note was from Captain Sidley of the Picton. Have last Vessi to me with heaving line, so that
01:23:04we will be found together. Vessi was the captain's 12-year-old son. The note creates more questions
01:23:10than answers. If the witnesses were correct, the ship's disappearance was quite quick. When did
01:23:16Captain Sidley know he was in danger? Why not signal for help if he had any warning? And when
01:23:21did he have time to write a note, bottle it, and tie himself to his son? It truly is a mystery.
01:23:28And it was not just ships that ran afoul of the strange forces in the area.
01:23:32Planes also struggled to make it through in one piece. In 1975, Ron Scott flew out from the Picton
01:23:40Airport in his Cessna 172. As he entered the Marysburg Vortex, his plane banked to the side.
01:23:47For several seconds, he was unable to right the plane, but once he did, the same force banked him
01:23:53to the other side. Again, he was stuck there for a few seconds, unable to control his plane.
01:23:58A skilled pilot, he had never experienced anything like it before. He was certainly
01:24:04luckier than Royal Canadian Air Force pilot Barry Allen Newman. Newman was at the same spot back in
01:24:101952 when he lost control of his jet and crashed into the lake. To this day, his body has not been
01:24:17found. In total, over 270 ships and at least 40 planes have met a tragic end in this area.
01:24:25And adding to the mystery, sometimes people report a series of bright lights or orbs or a
01:24:31dark ship hovering in the sky. These are even harder to explain. Witnesses willing to report
01:24:36them are adamant they are true. Sid Wells said he watched a strange shape like a multifaceted diamond
01:24:44slowly spinning in the sky, and then it just disappeared. Others claim to have seen it too.
01:24:50Of course, the Marysburg Vortex is just one of several places around the world
01:24:55known as Vile Vortices, a term coined by biologist and writer Ivan T. Sanderson.
01:25:01He discovered 12 other equally spaced areas on the surface of Earth where funny things happen.
01:25:07The best known of these, of course, is the dreaded Bermuda Triangle.
01:25:12Situated in the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda, Florida, and Puerto Rico, it has been blamed for
01:25:17the disappearance of thousands of people. They went in, on boats or in planes, but they never
01:25:22came out. Even the explorer Christopher Columbus experienced the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle
01:25:28during his first voyage to America in 1492. He said the compasses pointed in the wrong direction,
01:25:35the sea levels seemed to change dramatically, and he even spotted strange lights in the sky.
01:25:41In 1918, the USS Cyclops, which was one of the U.S. Navy's biggest fuel ships, disappeared there.
01:25:48Since the 309 crew members were declared lost at sea when the Cyclops vanished,
01:25:53it's seen as the largest loss of life in the history of the U.S. Navy in a single incident.
01:25:59At the time, the weather was good. The one message sent that day from the ship
01:26:04indicated no issues or concerns, and a distress signal was never sent.
01:26:09A thorough naval investigation followed. Its conclusion? Many theories have been advanced,
01:26:15but none that satisfactorily accounts for the ship's disappearance. In other words,
01:26:20the investigators were stumped. There's also the Dragon's Triangle,
01:26:24located in the Pacific Ocean. The most disturbing story involves a group of Japanese vessels that
01:26:30disappeared in the 1950s. When researchers were sent to investigate what happened,
01:26:35they too disappeared. In each case, it's impossible to truly know what occurred,
01:26:40and it's easy to get caught up in stories of giant sea monsters lurking beneath the waves.
01:26:45Who doesn't like a good scare? And Sanderson was willing to accept the possibility of such
01:26:51stories being true. He believed the vile vortices that he studied could be explained by anything
01:26:57from a wrinkle in the space-time continuum, to magnetic abnormalities, to underwater people.
01:27:03Of course, Sanderson was not only a huge fan of strange places. He also wrote about strange
01:27:08creatures, like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster. His skills as an impartial scientist are questionable,
01:27:15though. In 1948, he claimed that some three-toed footprints found at Clearwater Beach in Florida
01:27:21were proof of 15-foot-tall penguins, arguing that they were impossible to fake.
01:27:26In 1988, Tony Cingerini revealed that he and his friend, attaching some cast-iron feet to
01:27:33his high-top sneakers, were behind the giant penguin hoax. So, maybe Sanderson isn't the
01:27:38most reliable source after all. But there are also some very compelling and wholly natural explanations.
01:27:46Let's look specifically at the Marysburg Vortex. It's entirely possible that ships like the Bavaria
01:27:52and the Picton were done in by a mix of bad luck and bad weather. Unsettled weather is certainly not
01:27:58uncommon on Lake Ontario, and flash storms on the open water can prove dangerous to the most
01:28:03skilled sailor. And even today, with advances in weather forecasting, we get it wrong all the time.
01:28:10Back then, there was no way to predict that a storm was just around the corner.
01:28:15And the weather was just one issue. Historian Mark Seguin said that the area was always known
01:28:21to be dangerous, as the lakebed quickly becomes shallow along the eastern shore. There are also
01:28:26small rocky islands and shoals scattered throughout the area, making sailing a risky venture,
01:28:32especially for larger vessels or those weighed down by heavy cargo. By the mid-20th century,
01:28:38modern weather forecasting and improved shipbuilding alleviated most of the hazards of
01:28:42the Great Lakes' shipping, resulting in fewer losses. The last major shipwreck in any of the
01:28:47Great Lakes was that of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank off the coast of Lake Superior in 1975,
01:28:54with 29 crew members going down with it. It seems the vortex is no match for human progress.
01:29:01And as for lights or images in the sky? In most cases, it's the result of an interesting phenomenon
01:29:07called thermal or temperature inversion. When this happens, a layer of warm air becomes trapped under
01:29:13cold air. This can result in mirages or reflections. So, a light on the ground that is
01:29:19miles away can be reflected in the sky, giving the impression of a flying object. Other parts of the
01:29:25mystery may be solved with a little time. Lake Ontario's freshwater and frigid temperatures
01:29:31help preserve the ships and planes that came to rest there. As divers and researchers continue
01:29:35to explore the area, maybe we'll finally learn the fate of the Bavaria, the Picton, Captain Sidley,
01:29:42and his son. In 1945, five TBF Avenger aircraft took flight for a routine training exercise
01:29:51around the Bermuda Triangle. In the middle of the exercise, the planes were struck by intense rain
01:29:58and heavy winds, despite the clear weather forecast. The pilots became extremely disoriented
01:30:04and radioed the base to report that their navigational equipment had stopped working.
01:30:09The last thing the base heard was, when the first plane drops below 10 gallons, we all go down
01:30:15together! And then, static. The five planes and their 14 passengers were never seen or heard from
01:30:22again. On his very first voyage to the New World in 1492, Christopher Columbus sailed through the
01:30:29Bermuda Triangle. Columbus reported that one night, when he was on the deck of the ship,
01:30:35he noticed a giant light appear in the distance, unlike anything he had ever seen before.
01:30:41Columbus looked at his compass for direction, and it gave off erratic readings. You might have
01:30:47noticed that the Bermuda Triangle doesn't appear on any world map. This is because
01:30:52official institutions refuse to acknowledge that the area actually exists. In March 1918,
01:31:00carrying a crew of 306 people, the USS Cyclops left Barbados and headed home to Baltimore.
01:31:07The ship passed through the Bermuda Triangle on its journey and was never seen again. The Cyclops
01:31:13never issued any distress signal and disappeared without any explanation, making it the largest
01:31:19ship to go missing in the Bermuda Triangle. No wreckage has ever been found. No one exactly knows
01:31:27how many ships and planes have disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle. The rough estimate is 50 ships
01:31:33and 20 planes. Most of the time, the disappearances had no explanation and no wreckage has ever been
01:31:40left behind. In the year 1800, a large sailing vessel called the USS Pickering departed from the
01:31:48U.S. on its way to the West Indies. The ship sailed into the Bermuda Triangle along with its 90-man
01:31:54crew and was never heard from again. The USS Pickering was the first ever confirmed ship to
01:32:01vanish in the Bermuda Triangle. It's believed that the ship was taken out by a storm, but because no
01:32:08wreckage was ever found, we'll never know for sure. William Shakespeare's famous play, The Tempest,
01:32:15was inspired by the Bermuda Triangle. Sailors returned home to England to tell stories of
01:32:21treacherous waters near the Bahamas where ships mysteriously disappeared. These stories made it
01:32:27back to the Bard himself and inspired his final play about a storm at sea transporting a ship to
01:32:34a mysterious land. The shipwreck in Shakespeare's play is based on the 17th century ship, Sea
01:32:41Venture. The ship was carrying supplies from England to Virginia when it was struck by a massive
01:32:47storm in the Bermuda Triangle. Sea Venture was battered by the storm for three days and barely
01:32:53made it to the shore. Survivors of the wreck were stranded on a desolate stretch of Bermuda for nine
01:32:59months. When the TBF Avenger planes went missing, a massive search operation was conducted. Boats and
01:33:07planes searched the Bermuda Triangle for any signs of the aircraft. One of the boats searching was a
01:33:13PBM-5 Mariner airboat. The airboat took flight at 7 27 pm and called in a routine radio message
01:33:21three minutes later. Then, it was never heard from again. No trace was ever found of the rescue
01:33:28airboat or the five Avenger aircraft. A huge investigation was launched into the disappearance
01:33:34of all these vehicles, but nothing was ever discovered. Because the Bermuda Triangle isn't a
01:33:40recognized place, no one knows its exact location or size. Some people believe it covers around
01:33:47500,000 square miles around the Bermuda area. Other people believe the Triangle is as big as 1.5
01:33:55million square miles. The Bermuda Triangle is one of the most heavily traveled shipping routes in
01:34:01the world. Some skeptics believe that this fact solves the Bermuda Triangle mystery. Statistically,
01:34:08the busier the area, the higher the frequency of accidents and disappearances. While this makes
01:34:13sense, it's not the frequency of disappearances that's responsible for the mystery of the
01:34:18Bermuda Triangle. It's the lack of explanation or wreckage found. The Bermuda Triangle is home
01:34:24to the deepest point in the Atlantic Ocean, the Milwaukee Deep. The area has a maximum depth of
01:34:30over 27,000 feet. This is one of the deepest points in the ocean floor, but still not close
01:34:37to the massive 35,000 feet of the Mariana Trench. But the huge depth might explain how such little
01:34:44wreckage has been found. The Bermuda Triangle is home to some pretty intense and unexpected weather.
01:34:50Storms build up quickly and unexpectedly, then disappear soon after. If you blink, you might miss
01:34:57it. This could explain why few distress signals are issued. Pilots and sailors never saw the weather
01:35:03coming. In the year 1800 again, the ship USS Insurgent was on patrol when it stopped briefly
01:35:12at a coastal base before heading back out to sea. That was the last time USS Insurgent was ever seen.
01:35:19A severe storm reportedly struck the West Indies around that time. It's believed that storm was so
01:35:25powerful it could have caused the sinking of both the USS Insurgent and USS Pickering, which vanished
01:35:32around the same time. Like the Pickering, no wreckage of the Insurgent was ever discovered.
01:35:39A popular theory suggests that rogue waves are responsible for many disappearances. Rogue waves
01:35:46are called extreme storm waves by scientists. They occur when different weather patterns take place
01:35:52at the same time and cause large unexpected waves that reach up to 100 feet tall. Witnesses say
01:35:59that the waves look like giant walls of water. These waves could explain why ships go down fast
01:36:05and without leaving any trace. Joshua Slocum was an extremely talented sailor. He was the first
01:36:12person to ever sail single-handedly around the world. But sadly, he was no match for the Bermuda
01:36:19Triangle. In November 1909, Slocum said goodbye to his wife and set off on one of his usual winter
01:36:26voyages to the West Indies. Slocum's wife reported him missing after several months passed without
01:36:32any contact. It's said that he called in at Miami to resupply before vanishing into the Bermuda
01:36:38Triangle. Just off the coast of Japan, you'll find the Bermuda Triangle of the Pacific Ocean.
01:36:45They call it the Dragon's Triangle. Between 1950 and 1954, nine ships disappeared in this area
01:36:53without leaving a trace. The ship Kaio Maru 5 was sent to investigate these unexplained
01:36:59disappearances when it also vanished. After this incident, the Japanese authorities labeled the
01:37:05area as a danger zone and sailors are encouraged to avoid it. On the ocean floor, decomposing
01:37:12organisms let off large concentrations of methane gas that gets trapped under the water.
01:37:17This gas can build up until, boom, it ruptures. The gas surges up to the surface and erupts.
01:37:25If a ship was in the area of one of these ruptures, the water would become much less dense
01:37:31and cause the ship to sink rapidly and without warning. Scientists believe this could be the
01:37:37cause of the many disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle. While this theory makes a lot of sense,
01:37:43it doesn't seem too likely. The United States Geological Survey has stated that no large
01:37:49releases of gas are believed to have occurred in the Bermuda Triangle for the past 15,000 years.
01:37:56In July 2015, two teenagers disappeared after setting sail off the coast of Florida.
01:38:02There's some mystery about what the two teens were really getting up to.
01:38:06They told their parents that they were just going to fish, but they told their friends that they
01:38:11were crossing to the Bahamas. Shortly after they left, a line of thunderstorms moved towards the
01:38:16area and the boys were never heard from again. A massive 15,000 mile search was conducted,
01:38:23but sadly nothing was found. One year later, the pair's boat was found off the coast of Bermuda
01:38:30with a broken iPhone and some personal effects left inside. One of the most popular and bizarre
01:38:36theories trying to solve the Bermuda Triangle mystery comes from Charles Berlitz. He insists
01:38:43that the area is home to the lost city of Atlantis. The missing ships and planes and
01:38:48malfunctioning equipment, according to him, were all caused by rays of energy let out by the special
01:38:54energy crystals that power Atlantis. While this sounds silly, Berlitz's theory was convincing
01:39:01enough that over 20 million people bought his book worldwide.
01:39:08Some people are still afraid of sailing through this region because more than 50 ships and 20
01:39:13planes have disappeared here since the mid-19th century. You won't find this place on a regular
01:39:19paper map as it's not an official region of the Atlantic Ocean. It's just an imaginary area of
01:39:25water in the shape of a triangle near the southeastern coast of the U.S. Right now, we're
01:39:31going there to debunk all the myths and fairy tales about this place. The most popular theory
01:39:37says that the ancient city of Atlantis was once located where the Bermuda Triangle is now.
01:39:42It was inhabited by a more advanced civilization than the rest of the people on Earth.
01:39:47In this area, some mysterious crystals were installed that generated infinite energy and
01:39:52powered the entire city. Then the city sank and its ruins still lie on the bottom of the Atlantic.
01:39:59But among its ruins, there are still places where crystals work. They're the reason for most
01:40:05disappearances. Crystals randomly release beams of energy towards the surface and disable the
01:40:10electronics of planes and ships. There are no facts to support this theory. Someone once wrote
01:40:17this legend in a book about the Bermuda Triangle, and some people have been supporting it ever since.
01:40:22However, there's some oddity associated with electronics. Astronauts of the International
01:40:28Space Station noticed the Earth's magnetic field is weakened in the Bermuda Triangle area. This
01:40:34field is a shield that protects us from solar radiation. Above the triangle, the particles of
01:40:39the sun's rays move faster than in any other part of the planet. This causes unstable work in the
01:40:46electronics of satellites flying in the atmosphere of Earth. It doesn't apply to ships and planes,
01:40:51though. There's also a theory that the Bermuda Triangle is the center of a magnetic anomaly
01:40:57causing navigation errors, but regular checks of the magnetic map of this region don't reveal any
01:41:02issues. You arrive at the place, the water is calm, and there's no coming storm in sight. You look at
01:41:08the compass and see the arrow moving from side to side. Oh no, it's begun! Panic rises within you,
01:41:16and you quickly turn the steering wheel of the ship to sail away from this place.
01:41:20Oh stop, there has long been an explanation for the strange compass behavior in this area.
01:41:26The Bermuda Triangle is one of the rare places on the planet where True North and the Magnetic One
01:41:32are in the exact same direction. True North is the geographic North Pole of our planet.
01:41:37Magnetic North directs to the North Magnetic Pole, which constantly wanders around the Earth.
01:41:43Sometimes, these poles coincide, and the straight line that connects North and South
01:41:48is called the agonic line. If you fall into this line, your compass will behave strangely.
01:41:54It won't point exactly to the North. Imagine that you're the captain of a ship
01:41:58sailing in the Bermuda Triangle at the beginning of the 20th century. You need to know where North
01:42:04is to get to the shore. You look at the compass, and it points incorrectly. You're deviating from
01:42:10your original course and sailing in the wrong direction. There's the Caribbean Sea near the
01:42:15triangle, peppered with small islands. The sea floor here isn't deep. The ship can get in shallow
01:42:21waters. And now, the ship is stuck on a shoal, and you have no idea where you are. If this were the
01:42:2721st century, the ship's captain would be able to reach the shore using GPS and other modern
01:42:33navigation. But the most interesting thing is that the compass would work correctly this time,
01:42:39since the magnetic North Pole hasn't already coincided with the true one. For a long time
01:42:44in the territory of the Bermuda Triangle, the agonic line is somewhere far away from here.
01:42:50There are no problems with navigation now, but for some reason, this is where ships disappear.
01:42:56In fact, not just here. Throughout the Atlantic Ocean, there are places where many more ships
01:43:01have gone. The Bermuda Triangle is not even in the top 10 of such places. One of the main reasons
01:43:07why many ships are lost here is that one of the most popular shipping routes in the Atlantic
01:43:12passes through the Bermuda Triangle. And the more ships in one place, the more shipwrecks.
01:43:17Simple probability. Other theories say there's a space-time rift in this region.
01:43:23Ships and planes fall into this rift and end up in the past or the future. But for some reason,
01:43:29there's not a single proof of this myth. There's no reason to think that the rift is hidden
01:43:34somewhere here. The base of an extraterrestrial civilization is located in the Bermuda Triangle.
01:43:41Visitors from other galaxies steal sea vessels along with the crew, so no one finds the wreckage
01:43:47of the ships. This is also a popular myth that has no scientific justification.
01:43:53Sunken ships are not found here, as there's one of the deepest trenches in the world.
01:43:57Any sinking ship will sink to a depth of about 19,000 feet. The enormous pressure and distance
01:44:04makes it difficult to find the ships. Also, the Puerto Rico Trench is nearby. In some spots,
01:44:10it's as deep as 27,500 feet. The Kraken lives somewhere in the Triangle. It's a huge squid
01:44:18that sinks ships and is also a legend that sailors tell each other. However, gigantic squids live in
01:44:25the depths of the ocean. They can grow to the size of half a train car, but no cases have been
01:44:30recorded where they have sunk a large vessel. And in the area of the Bermuda Triangle, they've never
01:44:36even been seen. People in the past didn't know about the existence of these creatures, so when
01:44:42they saw them for the first time, they described them as huge, terrible monsters. Giant squids are
01:44:48some of the most elusive creatures on Earth, and scientists had to use sonar equipment to find them.
01:44:54They don't like to leave the dark depths and are likely to be afraid of the sound of any ship.
01:45:00A more realistic hypothesis about the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle is methane. Large deposits
01:45:06of this gas can be found under the seafloor of this region. From there, methane is released into
01:45:12the water. It takes the form of huge bubbles that quickly rise to the surface. Then, the gas makes
01:45:18the water almost boil, creating waves that sink ships. The theory is quite realistic, but numerous
01:45:25studies still haven't confirmed the presence of an increased concentration of methane in the region.
01:45:30Last time this phenomenon occurred was 15,000 years ago. Another credible theory implies the
01:45:37appearance of rogue waves. Imagine a clear, calm sea without wind. Suddenly, you hear a loud hum.
01:45:45In just a few seconds, a huge wave 100 feet tall appears from the calm surface and falls on your
01:45:51ship. Some scientists believe rogue waves are created by a surface sea current colliding with
01:45:57a strong headwind. There's a version claiming the wave is born because of the collision of warm and
01:46:03cold currents. But the most interesting theory says the waves are formed by kinetic vampirism.
01:46:10Under certain natural conditions, waves can exchange kinetic energy, and among all the waves,
01:46:16there will be one, the vampire, that gets the energy of all the others. When it accumulates
01:46:22enough energy, the vampire wave spills it out. This explains the force of the impact and its
01:46:28sudden disappearance. This phenomenon is observed in all the waters of the world's oceans, but there's
01:46:34no evidence that it occurs most often in the Bermuda Triangle. If rogue waves appeared there,
01:46:39it was not during a calm. A restless sea is the main reason for ship disappearances in the Bermuda
01:46:46Triangle. Severe storms and hurricanes are a frequent thing there, because the Bermuda Islands
01:46:52is an area of high pressure that diverts thunderstorms towards the Triangle. Huge waves
01:46:57simply overturn ships, and thunder and lightning flashes disable planes' electronics. There's
01:47:03nothing mysterious about this. Storms and ship disappearances occur in all oceans, but a lot of
01:47:10legends were made exactly about the Bermuda Triangle. It all started in the middle of the
01:47:1520th century, when a book was published that tells us that Atlantis lies in the waters of the Triangle.
01:47:22No proof was given, but people liked this mysterious theory so much, they began to build
01:47:27upon it. They started making documentaries about it, and writing new books. Each material devoted
01:47:33to the fantastic nature of the Triangle was based not on facts, but the theories of other written
01:47:39books and films. And when a topic is popular, you can make money on it. Readers enjoy it, and authors
01:47:46are rewarded. Oh, hey there! Today you're going on a round-the-world trip. And even though Phineas
01:47:56Fogg was able to make this trip in 80 days, you know, like in the Jules Verne book, I can't promise
01:48:02you will return safely. The fact is that the world is now chock-full of unknown anomalies.
01:48:08They used to be observed only in the Bermuda Triangle, but now they're found everywhere.
01:48:20We start the journey from New York, and our first destination is Los Angeles. The best way to get
01:48:26there is by plane. But while even an ordinary plane is designed to withstand severe storms,
01:48:32yours is special. Your very own Iron Eagle has a reinforced hull, an enlarged fuel tank,
01:48:39and a rescue capsule that will ensure your survival in an emergency. Okay, you take off
01:48:45into clear sky. White clouds, bright sun, and no turbulence at all. But suddenly, this piece
01:48:52is shattered by strong winds, black clouds, and bolts of lightning. One cloud looks especially
01:48:58sinister. It seems to be alive and growing in size. You have no choice but to fly through it.
01:49:05You take a deep breath. As soon as you fly in there, everything plunges into absolute darkness.
01:49:12You can only see white flashes. They brightly illuminate black clouds for a couple of moments,
01:49:18but are nothing like lightning. The turbulence is increasing, and you can hardly hold the
01:49:23controls in your hands. Suddenly, the cloud begins to change its shape. It gradually forms
01:49:29some kind of tunnel, and you fly dead center of this ring. But now, the tunnel walls begin to
01:49:36close down on you. The only way out is to fly to the light at the end of the tunnel. So, you increase
01:49:43thrust and focus. All the electronics of the plane are squeaking and warning of the danger.
01:49:49The engine is at its limit. You're sweating from tension. The walls of the tunnel almost
01:49:55touch the wings of the plane and… you did it! You left this dark cloud just at the very last moment.
01:50:03You can exhale with relief. Now, you're in a dense gray fog. You don't see a gap in it for
01:50:10miles around. Your radar is malfunctioning and can't show you where you are. It's time to
01:50:16contact ground control and determine your location. And when you hear the ground control's
01:50:21reply, your eyes become like bowling balls in surprise. Turns out you're already in Los Angeles
01:50:28airspace! What? But this is just impossible! Usually, this trip takes about 5 hours. But now,
01:50:35you've traveled about 2,500 miles twice as fast! To understand this, we need to open an encyclopedia
01:50:43of Bermuda anomalies. It's quite popular among travelers today. You flick through to the chapter
01:50:49of time travel, and… here it is! In December 1970, experienced pilot Bruce Gurnon fell into
01:50:57a similar anomaly in the Bermuda Triangle. He managed to survive and shared his experience.
01:51:04Scientists were able to explain most of the strange events he saw. But the journey through
01:51:08time is still a mystery. And now, there's a lot of these sky tunnels around the world.
01:51:14Wow, this anomaly seems even useful! You've saved quite some time and fuel. It's time to land the
01:51:21plane, change transport, and head to your next destination – Japan! This time, you'll be
01:51:27traveling by ship. A voyage through the Pacific Ocean should be calm and peaceful. And you'll
01:51:33be able to rest after a difficult flight. In a couple of weeks, the captain of the ship comes
01:51:39down from the bridge and reports a terrible fact. You're lost at sea. The passengers are shocked.
01:51:47Some people start shouting at the captain, accusing him of incompetence. In response,
01:51:53he shows a compass that was supposed to help him in navigation. The device has gone crazy.
01:51:59Its hand is spinning like the second hand of a watch. Suddenly, a thought occurs to you. You
01:52:05must've entered another anomalous area – the Devil's Sea. This is as mystical a place as
01:52:11the Bermuda Triangle, and it's marked with a red dot in your anomaly encyclopedia.
01:52:17Between 1950 and 1954, many ships and hundreds of crew members were lost there without a trace.
01:52:24In 1955, Japan sent its research ship Kaio Maru No. 5 here to find the cause of the
01:52:31disappearances. Unfortunately, that ship also went missing without a trace.
01:52:37But now you know there's a geomagnetic anomaly in this place, which drives all compasses crazy.
01:52:44This is because of high metal content in the ground underwater. The magnetic compass arrow
01:52:49is very sensitive to such things. So you take the situation into your own hands
01:52:55and suggest you use other navigation methods. Neither radio nor satellite navigation works
01:53:00either. So you raise your eyes to the sky and just watch the sun. The sunset is to the west,
01:53:07and it's exactly the direction you need. Pretty soon, you finally step on solid ground.
01:53:14Welcome to Japan! A couple of souvenirs, and on to the airport. This time, you're heading to the
01:53:20east coast of India. The flight is going fine, no turbulence or malfunction of the plane's tools.
01:53:27You observe the night sky through the window, and suddenly see a strange light. It's small
01:53:33and moving up and down. Other passengers don't even pay attention to it. For them, it's a common
01:53:39thing. When you open your encyclopedia, you quickly learn that the first person who described
01:53:44this anomaly was Christopher Columbus. He said it was like a candle moving upwards.
01:53:50He also wrote that a flame suddenly burst out in the sea. It all happened just as he was sailing
01:53:56through the Bermuda Triangle area on his first journey to the New World. But now, these lights
01:54:02are a common sight around the planet. In India, you buy a ticket for a cruise
01:54:07liner that goes to Florida. This route is popular among tourists as it goes through many interesting
01:54:13anomalies. It's more of sightseeing now. The first of them is a ghost ship. The hunt for it lasted
01:54:19for weeks. Each time the cruise ship got close to the ghost, a thick fog fell on the water.
01:54:25Tourists stood on viewing platforms and looked for the mast of the ship in the distance.
01:54:30But it appeared and disappeared like a shark fin. Finally, you manage to get closer to the ship.
01:54:37But everyone is asked to stay on board the liner and not attempt to come aboard the ghost ship.
01:54:43All tourists know the sad story of when this ghost was first found. In 1880, the Ellen Austin
01:54:50found a drifting schooner in thick fog. The captain sent a few people to scout there.
01:54:55They found a lot of valuable cargo and personal belongings of the crew. But there was no trace
01:55:01of other people. It looked as if the entire crew of the ghost ship simply disappeared.
01:55:07The captain of the Ellen Austin decided to tow the ghost to the port to sell its cargo.
01:55:12But as soon as they started their voyage, a strong storm divided the ships and the ghost
01:55:18disappeared. The crew spent several days looking for it. They managed to find the schooner again,
01:55:24but the prized crew on it was gone, just like the original crew of the ghost ship.
01:55:29So you continue your journey, and after a while, you enter the most mysterious place on the planet,
01:55:36the Bermuda Triangle itself. This zone is considered the birthplace of all anomalies.
01:55:43All the tourists gather on one side of the ship. The place they're looking at is like a giant
01:55:48bubble bath. The captain of the ship makes an announcement. Any kind of open fire is
01:55:53strictly prohibited here. This anomaly is, in fact, a source of natural gas. Methane bubbles
01:56:00burst out of the Earth's crust and rise to the top. These deposits are responsible for the loss
01:56:06of many ships. Of course, if you light a match next to such bubbles, well, kaboom!
01:56:12The last stretch of the journey from Florida to New York will be very intense. There are extreme
01:56:18weather changes in this area. For the moment, the sun is shining and there is no wind at all.
01:56:25But in a second, there's a sudden strong storm. Lightning strikes literally every second,
01:56:31and the sky is completely covered with black clouds. And in another minute, the sun's rays
01:56:37disperse the clouds and the storm ends. This is another anomaly caused by the Gulf Stream Current.
01:56:43Huge masses of warm air meet with colder ones. This provokes instant weather changes and violent
01:56:49storms. Many sailors and pilots were not ready for such conditions, and this led to entire ships and
01:56:56crews disappearing without a trace. But now, when these anomalies are everywhere, they're well-studied
01:57:02and shouldn't be feared. You get home safe and sound, and you can boast that you have experienced
01:57:08the most brutal anomalies of the Bermuda Triangle. But please, can you lose the Bermuda shorts?
01:57:15It's just too much.
01:57:21The notorious Bermuda Triangle in the North Atlantic Ocean makes people, ships, and airplanes
01:57:27vanish into thin air. Some experts blame bad weather conditions. Others are sure the reason
01:57:34is heavy traffic in the area and human error. Many people believe in conspiracy theories.
01:57:42Aliens, the lost city of Atlantis, or even a massive meteorite lying on the ocean floor.
01:57:47There are also those who deny there's anything unusual about the triangle. And still, the mystery remains.
01:57:57But few people know that the South Atlantic Ocean has an enigma of its own.
01:58:01Well, not the ocean itself, but a patch of space above this area. It's dubbed the Bermuda Triangle
01:58:09of Space, or the South Atlantic Anomaly. There, Earth's protection against solar radiation is much
01:58:17weaker than anywhere else. When spacecraft get into this region, all kinds of serious problems
01:58:23occur to them. For example, their equipment can fail or break down out of the blue.
01:58:29When NASA was launching its $2.5 billion Perseverance rover in July 2020, the space agency
01:58:36planners had to do their best to avoid the space Bermuda Triangle. Otherwise, it could have easily
01:58:42wreaked havoc on the spacecraft headed for Mars. This bizarre region stretches from Zimbabwe to
01:58:50Chile. The anomaly itself seems to be connected with one of the two Van Allen radiation belts.
01:58:58These belts are zones of intense radiation that comes from the solar wind. Charged particles get
01:59:05caught by our planet's magnetic field. They form two rings that surround Earth, stretching from 400
01:59:11to 36,000 miles above the surface. The inner Van Allen belt is made up of mostly protons,
01:59:18while the outer is mainly electrons. By trapping the particles,
01:59:23the two belts protect you and our planet from getting harmed by solar radiation.
01:59:29The South Atlantic anomaly lies in the region where the inner Van Allen belt comes very close
01:59:35to the planet's surface. In this place, Earth's magnetic field is especially weak. Nothing
01:59:42prevents cosmic rays from reaching as far as a mere 120 miles above the surface. The more solar
01:59:48radiation, the more high energy particles gather over the South Atlantic Ocean. The problem is that
01:59:55this radiation hotspot sits so low that many satellites have to travel through it while
02:00:00following their orbits. There, they get bombarded by protons at a speed of 18,000 hits per square
02:00:07inch per second. No wonder it affects all the electronic systems on board the spacecraft.
02:00:13For example, the Hubble telescope passes through the Space Bermuda Triangle
02:00:17more than 10 times a day, and it can't collect information when it's in that region.
02:00:24If the equipment isn't put into safe mode, all spacecraft systems can fail. Plus, the more
02:00:30complicated electronics become, the more problems occur in the area of the South Atlantic anomaly,
02:00:36and the more costly the damage is.
02:00:39The SpaceX CRS-1 Dragon spacecraft almost went out of control in October 2012. Attached to the
02:00:46International Space Station, it had serious problems while passing through the magnetic anomaly.
02:00:52Luckily, those issues were short-lived.
02:00:56In March 2016, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency lost contact with its satellite Hitomi.
02:01:04It was launched about a month before to study processes happening in the universe.
02:01:09Later, it was found out that the spacecraft had broken into pieces and crashed down to Earth.
02:01:16One of the motion sensors reported that the satellite was rotating, but in reality,
02:01:22it was stable. When the control system tried to prevent the unwanted
02:01:26and non-existent spin, the spacecraft fell to pieces.
02:01:31This accident cost almost $280 million and three years of preparation.
02:01:37But returning to the Earth's magnetic field, why is it weaker above the South Atlantic Ocean?
02:01:43Rather than being a perfect sphere, our planet bulges in the middle. If you measured Earth's
02:01:49diameter at the equator, it would be 27 miles wider than the pole-to-pole one. In the areas
02:01:56where there's a dip, charged particles from space can get closer to our planet's surface.
02:02:02The magnetic field is created when liquid metals flow in our planet's outer core. This generates
02:02:08electric currents and also gives Earth its south and north poles. But these poles aren't constant,
02:02:15because our planet's magnetic field is constantly shifting. Sometimes it's getting weaker, and
02:02:22at other times, it's growing stronger. Right now, the Earth's magnetic field is weakening.
02:02:29This process started more than 1,000 years ago. Scientists don't deny that one day,
02:02:36Earth's magnetic poles might flip. Then, the north pole will become the south, and vice versa.
02:02:43Such a phenomenon has been happening all the way throughout the history of our planet.
02:02:47The last time, it occurred around 780,000 years ago. Experts are still unsure if such a flip
02:02:56is going to happen this time. After all, it's not an instant change. This long process can even
02:03:03reverse all of a sudden. Something like that happened 40,000 years ago. At that time, Earth was
02:03:10really close to renaming its north magnetic pole to the south. But that brisk event turned out to
02:03:15be not a full reversal. While scientists were trying to figure out how long the South Atlantic
02:03:23Anomaly had been around, they made a curious geological discovery. It showed what our
02:03:29planet's magnetic field looked like several thousand years ago. The Bantu people were a
02:03:35tribe of ancient Africans who lived about 1,000 years ago in the region of the Limpopo River
02:03:41Valley. Nowadays, this area is inside the South Atlantic Anomaly. Bantu people had an odd ritual.
02:03:49During droughts, they burned their own clay huts. They hoped such a sacrifice would make it rain.
02:03:56But when clay burned at high temperatures, the magnetic minerals in it aligned with Earth's
02:04:01magnetic field. That's why when the substance cooled down, the minerals showed the planet's
02:04:07magnetic field pattern. It helped the scientists learn that the process of the weakening of the
02:04:13magnetosphere started long ago. The clay patterns even specified certain periods of time when the
02:04:21process was especially active. 400 to 450 CE, 700 to 750 CE, and 1225 to 1550 CE. Even better,
02:04:33the researchers likely found the answer to the mystery of the Space Bermuda Triangle.
02:04:38They noticed there was something unusual about the boundary lying between our planet's silicate
02:04:44mantle and its liquid iron-nickel outer core. This region is almost 1,800 miles beneath Earth's
02:04:51surface, and that's where a huge reservoir of super-dense rock sits. Some experts state that
02:04:58the thing might be tens of millions of years old and thousands of miles wide. It's not 100%
02:05:06clear how a rock, even if it's that big, can interfere with the magnetic field of the entire
02:05:12planet. It might be because it's located right between Earth's boiling outer core and the mantle,
02:05:19which is much stiffer and cooler. The enormous boulder might be disturbing the layer of iron,
02:05:26and it's the very thing that helps to form our planet's magnetic field.
02:05:31Whatever the reason is, exactly under Africa, the magnetic field is reversed,
02:05:37and that's what's likely to cause the anomaly that affects spacecraft.
02:05:42At first, the scientists thought their discovery meant the magnetic field was about to flip again.
02:05:48If it was true, our planet would go through several catastrophic events. The continents
02:05:53would start to lurch in different directions. It would trigger catastrophic earthquakes,
02:05:58lead to the disappearance of many species, and provoke climate changes.
02:06:05Luckily, there's no evidence that the consequences of the pole reversal
02:06:09would be that bad. Even better, it might not happen at all.
02:06:15After more research, it became clear that the Bermuda triangle of space
02:06:20isn't a sign of an upcoming pole reversal. The events taking place under the continent
02:06:25are more likely to be part of a bigger-scale pattern.
02:06:30But the South Atlantic Anomaly is scary enough on its own. If this area keeps growing,
02:06:36it'll cause problems not only in space, but also on Earth. Computers and other
02:06:41electronic equipment will fail or stop working altogether. Right now, the radiation is less
02:06:48intense in the lower layers of the anomaly than in its upper part. But over the past 150 years,
02:06:55the magnetic field in the region has lost more than 15% of its strength. It doesn't mean Earth
02:07:02will be left unprotected from the sun's radiation in the nearest future. Experts are sure this won't
02:07:07happen for at least another billion years. Plus, some kind of magnetic field always existed during
02:07:14the times of the magnetic pole's reversal, even though it was weaker and more complicated than the modern one.
