00:00Grammy winner and Grease actress Olivia Newton-John has died at the age of 73
00:04after a three-decade long battle with cancer. Earlier today flowers and
00:08tributes were placed on her star at the Hollywood Walk of Fame. CBS2's Alice
00:13Gaynor here in studio now with more. Alice. Olivia Newton-John died at her
00:18ranch in Southern California this morning surrounded by family and
00:21friends. She was famously known for Grease and her music but she also did a
00:25lot of charitable work.
00:31Olivia Newton-John shot to stardom as Sandy in the 1978 movie adaptation of
00:37the musical Grease. She played opposite John Travolta in the biggest box-office
00:45hit of the year and it's still popular today. Born in England Newton-John moved
00:53to Australia at the age of five and returned to England in her teens. She
00:57placed fourth in the Eurovision contest in 1974.
01:05Kevin Frazier of Entertainment Tonight spoke with the star many times over the
01:09years. She was considered a pop star and as a matter of fact a country music star
01:14in the early 70s. She was a four-time Grammy winner. Newton-John's title single
01:22off her double platinum album Physical spent ten weeks at number one on the
01:26Billboard Hot 100. It was banned on some video channels and radio stations
01:31because it was too racy. Off-screen Newton-John was a longtime activist for
01:36environmental and animal rights issues. She was first diagnosed with breast
01:40cancer in 1992. Cancer returned for a third time in 2017. In 2019 she spoke
01:47with Gayle King for CBS Sunday Morning describing the pain. Really bad yeah
01:52crying kind of pain. Her spirit though remained unbreakable. I don't know what
01:56my time is but I had need to enjoy my life so I'm gonna eat a cookie if I
02:00want it and I'm gonna have a cup of tea if I want it and if I want to have a
02:03little bit of wine I'm gonna do that. She dealt with another crisis in 2005.
02:07Her boyfriend Patrick McDermott went missing during a fishing trip off the
02:11California coast and was never found. The pain will always be there I'll always
02:14miss him I love him. Newton-John poured her energy into her own healing and
02:18raising money for her Cancer Center in Australia. She was made a dame in 2020
02:23for her service to charity cancer research and entertainment. Her daughter
02:27Chloe posted this photo tribute on Instagram. Days prior she wrote in a post
02:32I worship this woman my mother my best friend.
02:42And in addition to her daughter the Grammy winner is survived by her
02:46husband sister and brother as well as nieces and nephews. Maurice and Christine.
02:50Alice thank you a John Travolta posted a touching tribute on Instagram saying my
02:56dearest Olivia you made all our lives so much better your impact was incredible I
03:02love you so much we will see you down the road and we will all be together
03:06again yours from the first moment I saw you and forever your Danny your John. We
