00:00The government's planned rollout of a second 5G network puts mobile network operators at risk of breaking the law and being in a conflict of interest, said opposition MP Wan Saiful Wanjan.
00:14The Tasik Gelugor MP said the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 prohibits companies licensed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission from taking part in actions that diminish competition in the communications market.
00:29He said telecommunications companies collectively owning a 65% stake in Digital Nasional Berhad and vying to develop the second 5G network could create this conflict of interest.
01:00Wan Saiful also called the government's plan highly detrimental, illogical and incompetent, criticizing the Communications Minister for not carefully considering the impact.
01:17He is the second opposition MP to express concerns over the matter, with Macang MP Wan Ahmad Faisal Wan Ahmad Kamal also calling the move a blatant contravention of the law.
01:28Former Jaring Chief Executive Mohamad Awang Lah had also raised concerns, calling for DMP to be restructured to be independent of the industry.
