00:00What is a water footprint?
00:07It's all the fresh water we use, not just in drinks and showers, but in everything we consume.
00:14We use water to make food, clothes, cars and more.
00:19One cotton t-shirt takes 2,700 liters.
00:23A kilogram of beef uses 15,000 liters.
00:27And a kilogram of chocolate takes more than 17,000 liters.
00:32Some industries consume more water than others.
00:35Agriculture has the highest water footprint.
00:38We use water to grow crops, many of which are then used to feed livestock,
00:43plus drinking water for animals, processing and packaging.
00:48Energy production is also highly intensive.
00:51Water is used for cooling in power plants, biofuel plants and in hydroelectric power.
00:57Growing cotton and dyeing fabric use immense quantities of water too.
01:02And technology, like smartphones and data centers, also have high water footprints.
01:08The EU has two corporate sustainability directives,
01:11which oblige companies to address their environmental impact,
01:15including their water footprint,
01:17and lessen any negative effects like excessive water use or damage to ecosystems.
