00:00Angelique, the government will continue to strive to strengthen the workforce in the country.
00:10The government will continue to push for more jobs in the country.
00:14In a big press briefing earlier, NEDA and DOLE Secretaries Arsenio Balisacan and Bienvenido Lagresma said
00:22that the government will not stop working for the country.
00:26Angelique just confirmed the recent decrease in underemployment and unemployment of PSA.
00:56It is very encouraging because if we look further, we zoom into the data,
01:04we find that the increase in employment came from jobs opened up in manufacturing, in industry, and in services.
01:22The drop is really tremendous, 2.2 million April 2024 to May 2024.
01:29And that speaks a lot for us, the Department of Labor and Employment.
01:33It reflects that some of the efforts or the interventions being done by the Department of Labor and Employment
01:41through the collaboration and participation of the private sector,
01:46are bearing fruit now and this gives us encouragement.
01:51But according to two officials, the government will not just focus on the number of jobs, but also on its quality.
02:01Our focus as economic managers is not so much on the employment per se, but the quality of jobs that we are now focusing on.
02:13So we want to ensure that the quality of jobs would provide decent earnings for our workers,
02:25so that many of our poor people can graduate out of that poverty.
02:31Next, Angelique, NEDA assured that the approved 35 pesos wage hike will not affect the workers and employers.
02:42This is followed by the concern of some employers that they may not be able to afford the increase in wages.
02:48Anibalizakan, this will not change the views of the investors.
02:54They are not really that constraining when it comes to the economy.
02:59For so long as those wage adjustments are not too high to discourage investments, those adjustments are welcome.
03:12In Pogo Angelique's discussion, Anibalizakan once again gave his favor on this ban.
03:17Despite the fact that he may not be able to get the country's revenue, this is the only thing that the government will focus on.
03:25What we want is to have a reputation that criminals are here, things like that.
03:35The social cost, the way we view it, NEDA may not be worth those revenues.
03:51Because if we succeed in generating those jobs anyway, we will get much more than what we lost.
04:00While Dole is already profiling Pogo workers in case the government decides to ban it.
04:09In the meantime, we have already done profiling of those who will be affected in case, just in case, a decision is made to ban them.
04:21Because those who lost their jobs are not being let go by the Department of Labor and Employment.
04:28With the programs that it is implementing, it will focus on job facilitation.
04:35In partnership with the private sector, we have conducted job fairs.
04:40Last year, we conducted more than 2,000 job fairs all throughout the country in partnership with the PESO, Public Employment Service Offices.
04:49We will continue to look at upscaling, what will be the effect of retraining.
04:55And then the other component would always be, if they would like to have a livelihood project, we will be willing to support them.
05:04Angelique, if we talk about how many Pogo workers are here in the country,
05:10Dole said that the total number of workers here in Pogo is around 22,000.
05:16And this is what Dole and other government agencies are monitoring right now in case the Pogo operation here in the country is banned.
05:25And they assured that they will not be left behind and it is possible for them to shift their jobs to other sectors.
05:31Angelique.
05:33All right. Thank you very much, Kenneth Paciente.
