Fish, onions, peppers, burgers, jerk chicken, pork, sausages...

00:00The overall barbecue and alfresco eating market in 2023 was worth just over ÂŁ1.9 billion.
00:09Over the last few years, there's been a clear gastro-grilling move, the sausage to swordfish
00:14and burger to brioche evolution in the style and type of food cooked at a barbecue.
00:19So the question is, what belongs on a barbecue and what really doesn't?
00:26I don't think I'd like fish on the barbecues, not really. I like beef burgers.
00:34What belongs? Onions, peppers and chicken, pork. What doesn't? Popcorn. I eat popcorn.
00:47That's a funny question because this week I've been trying to go a bit vegan for, not
00:52overboards, but I'm surprised I have vegan chicken and it actually tastes just like chicken.
00:58So but if I'm being old school me, then definitely your meats and then a little bit of onions
01:05and spices to make things up. Maybe a bit of jerk chicken if you're going for something
01:09really good, yeah.
01:10Well, I should say beef burgers and sausage belong on a barbecue.
01:14Oh, the salads and fruit. Yeah. I'm not mentioning drinks.
01:21God, to be honest, I'm quite easily pleased when it comes to food, so not much.
01:26Despite overall slowing of the plant-based or meat-free market, vegetarian or vegan options
01:31are still increasingly in popularity on the barbie, in line with continuing trends towards
01:36a more flexitarian offer in the choice of barbecued food. It's estimated around 31%
01:42of all barbecues in 2023 contained a primary plant-based or meat-free base.
01:47As more and more people are working from home, the dynamics of after-work barbecues have changed,
01:52with around 29% of barbecues now being midweek. However,
01:56weekend barbies are still the most popular.
