France’s surprising second round of snap elections

It was an election full of surprises. Against all odds, France's left-wing Nouveau Front Populaire alliance came out on top in the second round of snap legislative elections with 182 seats, ahead of the presidential coalition and its 168 seats. In third place, the far-right Rassemblement National won 143 seats, well below poll estimates between the two rounds. Le Monde tells the story of France's electoral evening.
