00:00The only exciting thing about 2002 is that it's a palindrome.
00:04Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today, we're counting down our picks for the best teen movies from the year 2000 up to now.
00:11Just don't be so weird! God, why are you so awkward?
00:15Number 30, Dope.
00:17I could write about the typical, I'm from a poor, crime-filled neighborhood, raised by a single mother, don't know my dad, blah blah.
00:26It's cliche.
00:27This coming-of-age story does so much more than follow the outcast geek as he gets mixed up with the cool kids.
00:33This teen gets mixed up with a drug dealer.
00:35We watch as Malcolm tries to navigate this new connection while maintaining what's important to him,
00:40his friendships, good grades, and hopeful future.
00:43Um, this is dumb we're talking about.
00:46We're not going to a drug dealer's birthday party, that's, you're tripping.
00:51With a star-studded cast including Zoe Kravitz, A$AP Rocky, and Tyga, among some other familiar faces,
00:57this movie credibly showcases the life of black youth dwelling in a high-crime neighborhood.
01:02Cleverly written and full of 90s culture, this movie never loses its sense of humor or grittiness amid its many twists and turns.
01:10Lily! Lily! Get up! Oh! Oh, Lily!
01:14It's a stop sign! It's a stop sign! Lily, stop! Stop! Stop!
01:18Number 29, Hairspray.
01:21The story itself may not be entirely fresh, since it's adapted from the 2002 musical, which was based on the 1988 film,
01:29but us 90s and early aughts kids grew up with this cast.
01:46It's so star-studded we won't even bother trying to highlight anyone in particular.
01:50When Tracy Turnblad, a plus-sized teen, decides to audition to be a dancer on the Corny Collins show,
01:55she brings with her a change in the status quo.
01:57Hey, seaweed! Want to do Peyton Place for Corny?
02:00Are you crazy? You gotta dance with your car and I gotta dance with mine.
02:03Why?
02:04It's just the way it is, Tracy.
02:05But it's your dance!
02:06How about you go bar in for a second?
02:08Really?
02:09Go get it, girl!
02:11Known for its favorable representation and the beating heart at its center,
02:15Hairspray gives us a story about self-love, celebrating diversity,
02:18and going for what you want out of life, no matter the obstacles stacked against you.
02:23Never dance on TV again.
02:25If I can't dance with seaweed in Little N.S., then I don't want to dance on TV at all.
02:30I just want tomorrow to be better.
02:32Number 28, any of the Spider-Man trilogies.
02:35Is that a knife? Is that a real knife?
02:37Yes, it's a real knife.
02:38My weakness.
02:39It's small knives.
02:40Just let me go.
02:41Anything but knives!
02:43Oh, it's so simple.
02:44We're not here to argue about which Spider-Man is best.
02:46We love them all.
02:47And they're all great movies for both teens and general audiences.
02:51Peter Parker's whole thing is that he's just a normal kid
02:54given the chance to do some real good in the world.
02:57But the reality is, no one needs superpowers to do good in the world,
03:01and we all have a little responsibility to do the right thing.
03:04You have a gift.
03:07You have power.
03:08And with great power, there must also come great responsibility.
03:13The story's main message hits home every time,
03:16and it's a nice reminder for young adults
03:18as they gain more agency in the real world.
03:20These are the years when a man changes into the man he's going to become the rest of his life.
03:27Just be careful who you change into.
03:29Beyond that, these movies have everything.
03:32A protagonist we love to root for,
03:34nail-biting stakes,
03:36and of course,
03:37they wouldn't be complete without a little high school romance and drama.
03:45I know what you are.
03:49Say it.
03:54Out loud.
03:55Twilight was peak teen and pre-teen culture in the mid and late aughts.
03:59Beyond the vampire versus werewolf discourse of the time,
04:02it offered us fantasy, intensity,
04:04and characters who ultimately stay forever young.
04:07While its plots don't necessarily offer the most depth or meaningful morals,
04:11we don't need any of that to enjoy it.
04:13You better hold on tight, spider monkey.
04:15It's unapologetically self-indulgent and a fun world to escape into.
04:20Plus, you know, the casting doesn't hurt either.
04:23The Twilight movies have since seen a resurgence in pop culture
04:26due to their campiness and meme ability,
04:28which means all of us who were once big fans
04:30get to relive the hot supernatural creature glory days.
04:38Number 26.
04:39The Duff
04:40Okay, you need to start dressing more like you
04:42and less like Wreck-It Ralph.
04:43Self-esteem is a major theme among adolescents and young adults,
04:47and this movie touches on it beautifully.
04:49When Bianca discovers that she's considered
04:51the least attractive and least popular of her friends,
04:54she decides it's time for a change.
04:56She employs Wesley, her neighbor-turned-hateable acquaintance,
04:59to help up her social standing,
05:01and the two enter a mutually beneficial agreement.
05:04You got the easy part.
05:05You get past science in your sleep.
05:07I have to reverse Duff you.
05:08Are you wearing pajamas?
05:10This is peak teen storyline, comedy, and romance,
05:13right down to the homecoming scene at the end.
05:15You get every stereotype you could want out of the Duff,
05:18and a nice reminder that what's on the inside
05:21will always count more than any pretty face.
05:23So might be my favorite yet.
05:25It's not that bad.
05:28Okay, perfect. Hold that pose.
05:30Number 25, The Spectacular Now.
05:33Hello. Hi. Hi. Hi.
05:37Oh, my God, you're alive.
05:39A24 does it again.
05:41Yet another charming, down-to-earth, and impactful movie,
05:45The Spectacular Now gives us something raw and real.
05:48Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller have impeccable chemistry
05:51as they portray Amy and Sutter,
05:54two teens from different circles
05:55who begin to fall for each other.
05:57What's your thing?
05:58I don't know.
05:59I'd like to think that there's more to a person
06:01than just one thing, you know?
06:03Of course, their blossoming relationship
06:05is not without its ups and downs.
06:07These are teenagers we're talking about,
06:09and they are wonderfully flawed.
06:11Well-written, sincere, and anything but neat,
06:14this movie surpasses the cliches
06:16often found in young adult romances
06:18and goes straight for the nitty-gritty of it all.
06:20She's just a character from those books.
06:22Really stupid.
06:23No, it's not stupid.
06:24If you like it, it's not stupid.
06:25Number 24, Five Feet Apart.
06:28After The Fault in Our Stars,
06:30more on that soon,
06:31we have trouble trusting any romance
06:33featuring adolescents who are ill.
06:35Still, Five Feet Apart is so captivating
06:37right from the jump,
06:38we don't have much say in the matter.
06:40We're pulled right in.
06:41Stella, you need to lighten up.
06:46It's just life.
06:48It'll be over before you know it.
06:50Stella and Will both have cystic fibrosis,
06:52which prevents them from getting any closer than six feet.
06:55Despite their differing outlooks on their genetic disorders,
06:58the two inevitably begin to form a close bond,
07:01one where physical connection is out of the question.
07:04What are you doing here?
07:06I thought this was the bathroom, honestly.
07:08It's both refreshing and affecting
07:10to watch these two navigate romance
07:12without so much as holding hands.
07:14Hi.
07:16Hi.
07:17Number 23.
07:1813 Going on 30.
07:19Hi, sorry we missed your call.
07:21Dad?
07:22Well, we're not that sorry
07:23because we're cruising in the Caribbean.
07:24So we'll be back on the 18th,
07:26so call us then.
07:27Have a good day.
07:29You went on a cruise without me?
07:31This one is such a classic.
07:33And while it's generally loved by all rom-com audiences,
07:36we're not about to ignore that 13 in the title.
07:39Just because you don't look like these girls
07:41in Poise magazine
07:42doesn't mean that you're not beautiful
07:44in your own way.
07:45I don't want to be beautiful in my own way.
07:47I want to look like these people.
07:49Jennifer Garner perfectly embodies the age
07:51as she portrays a young teen
07:53who suddenly finds herself in an adult body.
07:55The movie's concept is a clever way
07:57to captivate both age demographics,
07:59who will each pick up on different details.
08:01Show me your tongue.
08:02Come on, I showed you mine.
08:03Showing you my tongue?
08:04Show me your tongue.
08:05Come on, Matt, I showed you mine.
08:06Well, it has to see yours.
08:08Matty, I need to see your tongue.
08:12It also makes the re-watching experience
08:15as an adult that much more rewarding.
08:17With several Teen Choice Award nominations,
08:1913 Going on 30 has been cemented
08:21in the teen pop culture canon
08:23for over 20 years now.
08:28What's your name?
08:29Agnes Everdeen.
08:32Well, I bet my hat that was your sister,
08:34wasn't it?
08:36Yes.
08:37As far as dystopias go,
08:39The Hunger Games took the world by storm
08:41in the late aughts
08:42with a highly successful novel trilogy.
08:44As violent and heavy as the content is,
08:46you know, a bunch of kids
08:48forced to kill each other in an arena,
08:50the theme of rebellion among adolescents
08:52has been around forever.
08:54It becomes incredibly empowering
08:56to watch the 16-year-old who,
08:58with all the odds stacked against her,
09:00rises to overthrow her corrupt government.
09:02One of us has to die.
09:03They have to have their victor.
09:06No.
09:08They don't.
09:11Why should they?
09:14Trust me.
09:15As standalone films,
09:16the casting,
09:17direction,
09:18and music are all phenomenal,
09:20but possibly the highest praise from fans
09:22is how faithful they are to the books.
09:24Peeta!
09:26Peeta!
09:27Are you okay?
09:28I heard the cannon.
09:30That's night lock, Peeta!
09:32You'll be dead in a minute!
09:33I didn't know.
09:34You scared me to death.
09:36Damn you.
09:38Number 21.
09:39Harry Potter franchise.
09:41Before you head to the comments
09:43about Harry Potter being targeted towards kids,
09:45hear us out.
09:46While the first few installments
09:48may have been primarily made
09:49with younger viewers in mind,
09:50the characters rapidly age
09:52into their teen years
09:53just as the series takes a darker tone shift.
09:55You didn't leave him.
09:57Not that.
09:58It's all right, Harry.
09:59It's all right.
10:01He's home.
10:02You both are.
10:04By the goblet of fire,
10:05we're seeing our favorite trio
10:06worried about things like their appearance
10:08and who they might attend the Yule Ball with.
10:10Of course,
10:11there isn't a ton of time
10:12to concern themselves
10:13with the typical high school dilemmas
10:15since they have a wizarding world to save.
10:17Come on, Tom.
10:18Let's finish this the way we started.
10:20Together.
10:25Number 20.
10:26Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.
10:28While some of the movies on our list today
10:30are going to be lighthearted high school romps,
10:32this isn't one of them.
10:34Rachel's been diagnosed with leukemia.
10:36They just found out.
10:38Despite the fact that it deals
10:39with a teen-facing terminal cancer, though,
10:41Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
10:43actually has much more levity
10:44than you would imagine.
10:46What is that noise?
10:48It's a regretful polar bear.
10:50It's a sweet coming-of-age film
10:51that looks at the typical experience
10:53of being a teenager
10:54with the added gravity
10:55of being confronted with mortality.
10:57It'll make you laugh,
10:58it'll make you cry,
10:59and you'll definitely be thinking about it
11:01long after it's over.
11:03Get out of here, Craig.
11:04You've done your time.
11:05You don't have to hang around
11:06with a sick girl anymore.
11:09How can you even say that to me?
11:11Number 19.
11:13She's the Man.
11:14Who knew that William Shakespeare's
11:16comedic play Twelfth Night
11:17would make the perfect background
11:19for a hilarious teen romance movie?
11:21I just don't want to see you get hurt.
11:23We are so full of...
11:25Back to practice!
11:27In this 2006 film,
11:28Amanda Bynes plays Viola Hastings,
11:30a girl who loves playing soccer
11:32but is dismayed when her team is cut.
11:34She decides to take matters
11:36into her own hands
11:37and disguise herself
11:38as her twin brother Sebastian
11:40and play for the guy's team
11:41instead to prove a point.
11:43Al-Hakalugi.
11:47I'm so proud.
11:49This movie is, of course,
11:50full of laugh-out-loud hijinks,
11:52especially when Viola finds herself
11:54falling for one of her teammates.
11:56You and Viola...
11:58I mean...
12:00be magic.
12:02I don't know.
12:03Number 18.
12:04A Cinderella Story.
12:06Some of the movies on our list
12:08are critically acclaimed films
12:09that received Oscar nominations.
12:11But this one didn't exactly
12:13fare well with the critics,
12:14receiving a dismal 12%
12:16on Rotten Tomatoes.
12:18And you thought they didn't even know you existed.
12:22But critics aren't the only ones
12:24with opinions,
12:25and we love this charming
12:26modern-day fairy tale
12:27starring Hilary Duff
12:28and Chad Michael Murray.
12:29Don't you know who I am?
12:31Of course I do.
12:33You're Princeton girl.
12:34You're the girl I've been waiting to meet.
12:35I know exactly who you are.
12:36Does it make sense
12:37that Austin doesn't recognize Sam
12:39just because she's wearing a small mask?
12:41No.
12:42But do we care?
12:43Definitely not.
12:45Of course, this movie has
12:46a picture-perfect happily ever after,
12:48and we wouldn't have it
12:49any other way.
12:51Number 17.
12:52Sing Street.
12:53This low-budget production
12:55was a collaboration between Ireland,
12:57the U.S. and the U.K.,
12:58and the result was
12:59a perfect teen movie
13:01about a Dublin adolescent
13:02in the 80s
13:03who starts a band
13:04with the goal
13:05of getting his crush
13:06to fall for him.
13:07You lied?
13:10No.
13:11I'm trying to give up.
13:12The movie even received
13:13a nomination
13:14for Best Motion Picture Musical
13:15or Comedy
13:16at the Golden Globe Awards.
13:17Can you really not swim?
13:19No.
13:20So why'd you do that then?
13:22For our art, Cosmo.
13:24If you're a music fan
13:25looking for something uplifting
13:26that'll leave you
13:27wanting to sing along
13:28with the characters,
13:29look no further
13:30than this sadly underrated movie.
13:33Drive it like you're stolen
13:39Drive it like you're stolen
13:41Number 16.
13:428th Grade.
13:43We never could have imagined
13:45that comedian Bo Burnham
13:46could have created
13:47such a heartfelt film
13:48about a young teenage girl
13:49living in the social media era.
13:51But in 2018,
13:52he did just that,
13:53impressing critics
13:54and viewers
13:55in the process.
13:56Thank you guys
13:57for watching this video.
13:58I hope some of you guys
13:59found it helpful
14:00and make sure to subscribe
14:02to my channel.
14:03Elsie Fisher shines
14:04as the desperately
14:05awkward protagonist Kayla,
14:06who you can't help
14:07but root for
14:08throughout the story
14:09even if you're
14:10busy cringing
14:11and covering your eyes
14:12while remembering
14:13your own uncomfortable
14:14middle school experiences.
14:19This movie will
14:20break your heart
14:21and leave you wishing
14:22you could see Kayla
14:23living her best life
14:24all grown up.
14:25So the thing about
14:26growing up is that
14:27it's going to happen
14:28so don't fight it.
14:29Number 15.
14:30Freaky Friday.
14:31Before Lindsay Lohan
14:32became known
14:33for her antics
14:34in the tabloids,
14:35she was starring
14:36in adorable teen comedies
14:37like Freaky Friday.
14:38Excuse me.
14:39Is this yours?
14:41Thanks.
14:42The premise
14:43is that she's a rebellious teen
14:44who doesn't see eye to eye
14:45with her mother
14:46about anything
14:47until they inadvertently
14:48switch bodies one day.
14:50You're not my mother.
14:51Yes, I am.
14:54Get away,
14:55you clone freak!
14:56Don't you use
14:57that tone with me.
14:58Both Lohan
14:59and Jimmy Lee Curtis
15:00do a remarkably good job
15:01of impersonating
15:02each other's mannerisms
15:03and the film comes
15:04to a surprisingly
15:05emotional conclusion.
15:07Not to mention
15:08this movie made
15:09little rocker chicks
15:10out of many of us
15:11when we saw it in high school.
15:12You're the kind of friend
15:13who always spends
15:14when I'm broken.
15:16Number 14.
15:17Juno.
15:18Has there ever been
15:19such a hilarious look
15:20at unintentional
15:21teen pregnancy?
15:22I'm pregnant.
15:23Oh God.
15:24When it was released
15:25in 2007,
15:26Juno was a massive
15:27critical and commercial success.
15:29Making $231 million
15:31on a budget
15:32of under $10 million.
15:33This is the most
15:34magnificent
15:35discarded living room
15:36set I've ever seen.
15:41It looks at the story
15:42of a 16-year-old girl
15:43who decides
15:44to give her baby
15:45up for adoption
15:46after becoming
15:47pregnant by mistake.
15:48And while the movie
15:49starts off as quirky
15:50and full of comedic relief,
15:51it takes a more
15:52serious and unexpected
15:53turn as the action progresses.
15:55Leading to a conclusion
15:56that is both
15:57surprising and
15:59poignant.
16:01Number 13.
16:02Bring It On.
16:032000's Bring It On
16:04opens with a bang
16:05as we see
16:06Torrance Shipman
16:07have a cheerleading
16:08nightmare dream sequence.
16:13What follows
16:14is a movie
16:15that keeps up
16:16an exciting pace,
16:17shows us fun
16:18cheer routines,
16:19a bit of romance,
16:20and even tackles
16:21racism and
16:22class disparity.
16:27While some movies
16:28from this era
16:29don't hold up
16:30well 20 years later,
16:31this one is
16:32just as likable
16:33as it was upon
16:34its release.
16:35While it may not
16:36have been
16:37initially critically acclaimed,
16:38it has achieved
16:39cult classic status
16:40in the years since.
16:45Number 12.
16:46Booksmart.
16:47The elevator pitch
16:48for this movie,
16:49which was directed
16:50by Olivia Wilde,
16:51could have been
16:52super bad
16:53but with girls.
16:54But the end result
16:55was so much more.
16:56Beanie Feldstein
16:57and Caitlyn Deaver
16:58star as two
16:59high school seniors
17:00who have spent
17:01their last few years
17:02focusing on academics
17:03rather than
17:04having a good time.
17:16They set out
17:17to have one epic
17:18night out
17:19before graduation
17:20and end up getting
17:21much more than
17:22they bargained for.
17:27It's laugh out
17:28loud funny
17:29and manages to be
17:30silly while also
17:31being pretty woke.
17:37Number 11.
17:38Love, Simon.
17:39Love, Simon
17:40was notably
17:41the first time
17:42that a major
17:43Hollywood studio
17:44made a teen movie
17:45focusing on a
17:46gay protagonist.
17:47But beyond
17:48its historical
17:49significance,
17:50it's also
17:51a deeply enjoyable
17:52film.
17:55While many
17:56LGBTQ plus
17:57narratives
17:58told in the
17:59mainstream
18:00look at the
18:01perils of being
18:02gay,
18:03this one takes
18:04a somewhat
18:05lighter
18:06though still
18:07realistic look
18:08at what a
18:09teenager's
18:10experience
18:11might be like
18:12coming out
18:13today.
18:14It features
18:15a sweet
18:16romance
18:17and a
18:18cast of
18:19likeable
18:20characters
18:21that make
18:22us think
18:23this will
18:24soon become
18:25a
18:26real
18:27thing.
18:29Number 10.
18:30The Sisterhood
18:31of the Traveling
18:32Pants.
18:33It's always
18:34tough to adapt
18:35a book that
18:36has such a
18:37loyal following
18:38but they
18:39nailed it
18:40with the
18:412005 movie
18:42version of
18:43The Sisterhood
18:44of the Traveling
18:45Pants.
18:49The story
18:50is about four
18:51friends who
18:52are very
18:53different from
18:55the same
18:56pair of
18:57second-hand
18:58jeans so
18:59they use
19:00the pants
19:01to keep
19:02them together
19:03even when
19:04they're
19:05apart.
19:06The
19:07all-star
19:08cast is
19:09what carries
19:10this movie
19:11with Amber
19:12Tamblyn,
19:13America Ferrera,
19:14Blake Lively
19:15and Alexis

19:18of heart to
19:19their sections

19:21story.

19:26Doesn't
19:27everyone dream
19:28of suddenly
19:29finding out
19:30that they're
19:31in fact the
19:32princess of
19:33a small
19:34little-known
19:35country?
19:36We sure
19:37did.
19:38The
19:39modern fairy
19:40tale told
19:41in The
19:42Princess
19:43Diaries is
19:44tons of
19:45fun as
19:46we watch
19:47Anne Hathaway
19:48play the
19:49hapless Mia
19:50Thermopolis,
19:51a clumsy
19:52and decidedly
19:53naive girl
19:54living in
19:55San Francisco.
19:56When she
19:57finds out from
19:58her grandmother,
19:59played flawlessly
20:00by Julie Andrews,
20:01that she's
20:02actually the heir
20:03to the kingdom
20:04of a fictional
20:05country called
20:06Genovia,
20:07she has to
20:08quickly learn
20:09how to walk
20:10and talk
20:11like royalty.
20:12We'll rewatch

20:22A Walk
20:23to Remember
20:24introduces us
20:25to Jamie,
20:26a minister's
20:27daughter who
20:28seems too pure
20:29for this world,
20:30and Landon,
20:31a bad boy
20:32who's part
20:33of the wrong
20:34crowd.
20:35When they're
20:36thrown together,
20:37Jamie makes
20:38Landon promise
20:39that he won't
20:40fall in love
20:41with her,
20:42which he
20:43takes as
20:44some kind
20:45of joke.
20:46But they
20:47do fall
20:48in love,
20:49only for
20:50their
20:51happy ending
20:52to be foiled
20:53by the fact
20:54that Jamie
20:55has been hiding
20:56her terminal
20:57illness from him.
20:58You'll need

21:03Easy A
21:04Inspired by
21:05the events
21:06of Nathaniel Hawthorne's
21:07The Scarlet Letter,
21:08Easy A stars
21:09Emma Stone
21:10as a high schooler
21:11who lies
21:12about losing
21:13her virginity
21:14to get her
21:15friend
21:16off her
21:17back.
21:18The casual
21:19fib spirals
21:21out of control
21:22and she finds
21:23herself helping
21:24her peers come up
21:25with equally
21:26untrue stories
21:27about their
21:28own sexual
21:29histories.
21:30Considering
21:31it came out
21:32a decade
21:33ago,
21:34the film
21:35does a
21:36remarkably
21:37good job
21:38of tackling
21:39the issue
21:40of slut
21:41shaming
21:42that wasn't
21:43nearly as prevalent
21:44in the cultural
21:45dialogue at
21:46the time.

21:55teenagers
21:56battling
21:57cancer
21:58who fall
21:59in love
22:00is going
22:01to be depressing,
22:02well,
22:03you'd be
22:04right.
22:05There's
22:06no sugar
22:07coating it.
22:08The Fault

22:10Stars
22:11is certainly
22:12not a
22:13fun-filled
22:14romp,
22:15but it
22:16is a
22:17fun-filled
22:18romp.

22:39have taken

22:48big screen,
22:49but when
22:50it finally
22:51did, fans
22:52were rewarded
22:53with an
22:54emotionally
22:55evocative
22:56film that
22:57did justice
22:58to its
22:59source
23:00material.
23:01That
23:02should
23:03come as no
23:04surprise
23:05considering
23:06the fact
23:07that Schbosky
23:08actually penned
23:09the script
23:10and directed
23:11the film
23:12himself.
23:13The
23:14story,
23:15just trying
23:16to make
23:17it through
23:18each day,
23:19is both
23:20tragic and
