00:36First of all, when I walked into the first dressing room, it wasn't my dressing room, but there was a baby doll.
00:41Her hair was beautiful.
00:44I was like, who baby doll is that?
00:46And I was like, I'm taking the baby doll. I didn't want you to know. I wasn't going to steal it.
00:52But I thought about it.
00:53My daughter, I have two girls, and the little kid in me still comes out at times.
01:00So, when I saw your baby, the fact that you've given me one, I wanted to walk out with your product,
01:06because I wanted you to see that I'm going to promote you.

01:17because that's what we have to do as businesswomen.

02:06I was screaming and hollering, because my grandmother, back in the day, I used to hate my name, Jabari.

02:16My grandmother used to order Crystal, and she named all of us, and she came across the name Fantasia.
02:22But when I was young, you know when you walked into the gas stations and they had the name tags?
02:26They never had Jabari.
02:27They never had Jabari either?
02:29No.
02:30Never had Fantasia.
02:31And I was young, and I'm thinking, man, I'm going to change my name when I get older.
02:35And my grandmother used to tell me, no, baby girl, God told me to name you that, because you're going to be a star.
02:40And there it goes.
02:41And so in the back, I just kept thinking.
02:46Yeah.
02:47You have these angels that come into your life like this, right?
02:49When we was on the phone, you know, you have the nail lady telling you God's listening to you.
02:53You know, you have your grandmom saying it, and now here you are, a star in yourself.
02:58Yeah.

03:03Yeah, but it wasn't easy getting here, so let's talk about it.
03:08And I know you're holding it in.
03:09I know you are.
03:10You don't want to mess up your makeup, but I know you're holding it in.

03:18Everything that you've been through.

03:27We were on the phone last week, and I asked you.
03:30I said, you know, listen, if you had to name or give one of your songs that defines your life right now, right, what was it?
03:38And you said, I'm going to think about it.
03:40What song is it?
03:41And I still didn't find one because I think there's a new song being made.
03:44Oh, I like it.
03:47That was my past, but was so necessary to get me to here right now.
03:52Yeah.
03:53So there's a new song.
03:55There's a new sound that I have to put into this season.
03:59And so it hasn't been made yet.
04:01But trust me, I just told my team in the back.

04:05He's so fine.

04:13I was just telling them.
04:14I was like, you know, I need to go back and get after that announcement.
04:19You know, because I'm on Purpose Street and not so there's two different streets.

04:33I took the announcement today and I said, now it's time for me to get into the studio.
04:38I could sit back and my friend was messing with me.
04:40She was like, oh, let me get you a glass.
04:42You a star.

04:44I was like, girl, I'm a king's king.
04:47I thank him for what he's adding.
04:50For what he's adding to my list.
04:53For the things that he's doing.
04:55But I still got to stay in a certain posture for purpose.
04:59Or else I'm going to get in the way.
05:02Man, don't let me start.
05:04No, start.
05:06Start.
05:07You know, well, listen, you're going to be making some new music, right?
05:10And it's still independent, right?
05:11And I want to kind of start there because, you know, I want to dive into Fantasia, the businesswoman, right?
05:16What is that process like and being independent?
05:18I know I was hearing you on recent interviews and you said, hey, I get the freedom to choose how I want to roll it out now.
05:23And there's a power in that.
05:24What's it been like for you?
05:25It's been great.
05:26You know, I've taken control.
05:28I won Idol when I was 19.
05:3020 years ago this year.
05:32Well, I think it's 21.
05:3421?
05:35I'm about to be 40.
05:44I was waiting on 40.
05:45I'm ready for 40 because I know what I want and what I don't want.
05:50I know how to say no.
05:53In a nice way.
05:55But it's been great.
05:59It's been great because now I can look back and say all of the work that I put into this.
06:05And, of course, everything that I went through was necessary.
06:08And we're going to speak about failure in a minute because I used to run from failure.
06:12Now I think it's kind of like my cool friend.
06:16Why is that?
06:18You want to talk?
06:19Yeah, let's talk.
06:21Without failure, I wouldn't be here.
06:24That's right.
06:25Without failure, I wouldn't have learned all the things that I've learned.
06:30I'm in school right now at Central State.
06:32That's right.
06:33Studying business.
06:35The business has taught me all I need to know if I don't go no further.
06:43So without failure, I wouldn't be here today.
06:47We run from failure, especially as strong black people.
06:50We don't want failure up under our names.
06:53We don't want nobody to say, oh, she failed that.
06:55Oh, he failed that.
06:57But actually, if we look at it different, without failure, none of us would be sitting in this room.
07:05So I make it my little friend.
07:07I don't want it to sit right here.
07:10Stay over there in the corner.
07:13But it gives me time to look over there and figure out, okay, I don't need to make that move or that move.
07:19I probably need to go this way.
07:21Right.
07:22Because failure is telling me, we've been here before.
07:25We've been down this road.
07:27Now what you going to do with it?
07:28Yeah.
07:29So I made it my little friend.
07:30Yeah.
07:31I don't run from it.
07:32I don't hide from it.
07:34Everything that I went through was necessary and was setting me up for where I am now.
07:40So to be independent, whew, feels so good.
07:44Yeah.
07:45Because now I know that when I leave home from my children, I'm going to work, but I've set it up to where I get to see my stuff come home.
07:54I don't have to keep giving it out to everybody.
07:57My grandmother used to say, you have a gift, but don't let nobody prostitute it.
08:01You told me that on the phone.
08:02I was ready to record that one.
08:04Yeah.
08:05At the time, I was like, I don't even understand what she's saying, but what she's saying is,
08:09why must you get up out of your bed, get on a plane, leave your children, go out, do these tours?
08:15You're away, you're away, you're on stages, you're on stage, you get home and you ain't got nothing.
08:22What you doing?
08:23You're wasting time.
08:26So that's when I decided I'm going to go independent.
08:28I went independent first, before I started Rock Soul Productions.
08:32And I said, you know what?
08:34I love labels.
08:35I'm not here to trash them.
08:36I'm not here to bash them.
08:38But they're taking away everything that I should be bringing home.
08:41Yeah.
08:42So I created my own.
08:43Yeah.
08:44Well, let's dive into that, right?
08:45Rock Soul Productions.
08:46I know we talked about it.
08:47Based in North Carolina.
08:48Yeah.
08:49Right, where you grew up at.
08:50Yes.
08:51What's in store for the production company?
08:52And I know you've already made changes.
08:53Like, what did you find out about being the CEO of a production company now?
08:57And I know you're probably like, damn, I thought I learned.
08:59But what did you learn and what are you learning in this process?
09:01It's only been a few months.
09:02Yeah, I'm forever learning.
09:03You guys have to forever be students.
09:06You have to forever be a student.
09:08You will never know it all.
09:10And I don't want to know it all.
09:12I will learn from some people in this room.
09:14You will learn some things from me.
09:16That's called connections.
09:18Right?
09:19So starting the business, I didn't know it was going to be as hard as it is.
09:25But it's been a journey.
09:27I never, ever sent out an email.
09:31I was the artist.
09:32I had people to do that for me.
09:35Let them do all the work.
09:36You count the money, you do the email, and you do it.
09:39Then I realized, you got them doing it and you don't know what's going on.
09:45So you don't know what's coming in and coming out.
09:48You're just only trusting what everybody is saying.
09:51You have to stand up, Fantasia, and now it's time for you to become a business woman.
09:56So now I'm emailing.
09:57And I didn't realize that emails, you got to talk a certain way.
10:00You got to approach it a certain way, you know.
10:05Do I answer now?
10:06I answer later.
10:07Let it breathe.
10:11I learned that, though, from my team and from my husband, who's my partner.
10:17And I'm getting up in the mornings.
10:19I have a schedule, and it ain't easy, but I'm emailing.
10:23I'm checking my bank account.
10:25No, I'm serious.
10:27Girl, I see $100, and I'd be like, can I ask you a question?
10:30Will you send out $100?
10:32Where did it go?
10:34But I have to do that because for a while, I just let everybody else run havoc.
10:40And people say, I got your back.
10:43Come on, y'all.
10:44We're living in a world now where I just got to find the right words.
10:47I got your back.
10:48I love you.
10:49You so good.
10:51And nor do I lead with my hurt.
10:55You can't run a business with your hurt.
10:57You can't run a business with emotions.
11:00So I ran into somebody that was working for us for a small period of time.
11:05And I started realizing that they were just running havoc, leading with hurt,
11:12leading with what they had been through, and bringing it on to Rock Soul Productions.
11:17And I said, OK, when you run a business, it's like a game of chess.
11:22You got to make the right moves.
11:24I had to sit back.
11:25I couldn't just let them go.
11:27But I had to give them chances and speak to them about some of the things that I was seeing.
11:33And so about on that third, fourth, I think it might have even been a fifth,
11:40I said, OK, I have to remove it.
11:42Because it's going to mess up.
11:44This ship is sailing.
11:46And one rotten apple or one person could sink this ship.
11:51And God gave it to me.
11:53So I'm going to have to remove it because it doesn't match with the rest of my team.
11:57When you're hiring people and you're starting businesses, make sure they match who you are.
12:02Because sometimes when you can't show up, they may have to show up on your behalf.
12:06And they need to represent and reflect who you are.
12:08You get what I'm saying?
12:10So it wasn't quite.
12:17Yeah, I kept.
12:18Yeah, I kept trying and it just wouldn't fit in any spot, any area.
12:23And I had to let them go.
12:25But what I did tell them on my way out is I'm praying for you.
12:31And I hope that you can let go of all the things that you've been through in the industry.
12:34So that you can move forward with what I see God has given you, which is a vision.
12:39But until you forgive, let go and move on.
12:43Not use your emotions to get back at everybody through your business.
12:47Then you'll be good.
12:49Yeah.
12:50Well, let's dive back and see it passes.
12:52I remember, you know.
12:54See that hit, that just caught it.
12:56I'm going to run that back.
12:58You can't start up a business to get back at anybody.
13:01You get what I'm saying?
13:03God gives you something.
13:05You like.
13:06Okay.
13:07Yeah, I'm gonna go out there.
13:08I'm out to prove such as wrong about a proof.
13:10It ain't about them.
13:12That's success.
13:13We talk about purpose.
13:17Now, it hit.
13:18You could tell you a star.
13:19Are you pick it up?
13:22So that's why I said, you know, you got to take out all of that when you start.
13:27If God gives you something or you have a vision.
13:29You got to remove all of that.
13:31So you can see clearly because now you're bringing on life's people that you got to pay.
13:36You got to take care of.
13:38It's got to all work out and you can't manage it with your emotions.
13:43So you said before interviews that, you know, you have developed a voice for healing.
13:50Right.
13:51Like and my colleague, Erica Speed, when we got that call, she was ecstatic, you know,
13:55and couldn't wait to see you in here.
13:57But I even heard it when we was talking that voice for healing.
14:00How did you develop that?
14:02The voice.
14:03Yeah, the voice of healing.
14:05When you sing, you seem to be able to heal people.
14:07Right.
14:08How did you develop?
14:10Oh, that's crazy that you asked me that because I think it came from a lot of my own pain.
14:18I was a God uses me to get through a lot of pain.
14:22God uses me to get through other people.
14:26But if I don't feel what they feel, then how can I open my mouth and it come out?
14:31Which sometimes like, man, that's not fair.
14:33Lord, that ain't fair.
14:35Now you got to fix this.
14:37But my grandmother used to tell me too much is given, much is required.
14:41Anything worth having is worth fighting for.
14:44So he gave me this gift.
14:46And when I was, I think, five or six years old, we were singing churches.
14:50And this older mother came up to me and she said, you got something.
14:58God has given you a healing voice.
15:02When you open up your mouth, people are healed.
15:04And at the time, I was six.
15:06I was like, yes, ma'am.
15:08OK, good, great.
15:10But now I realize it.
15:12So I have to go through what I go through.
15:14And all of the greats who came before me, when you watch their documentaries, they have stories.
15:18They have stories.
15:20They are vessels being used to be able to go out amongst other people and bless them.
15:25It's bittersweet.
15:27Ooh, ooh, ooh.
15:32You got it.
15:34You got it.
15:36It's bittersweet.
15:38But that's that thing when you say, OK, God, I surrender.
15:42I surrender all.
15:45I surrender all.
15:48I ain't even.
15:50All to thee, my blessed savior.
15:55I surrender.
15:58Not a little bit, not a part of it, not.
16:00Oh.
16:05You healing me.
16:08Talk about that transition.
16:10You're going through music.
16:12Right.
16:13You're learning in the industry.
16:15You hear from artists all the time how it's just a mess.
16:17But then you transition into acting.
16:19And you told me on the call how Celie, playing the character Celie, how that helped.
16:25You see.
16:27That helped you.
16:31Right.
16:33It repaired you in a way.
16:35Right.
16:36Explain what you mean.
16:38So I didn't want to play Celie.
16:40I had already played her years ago on Broadway.
16:41And I was like, I can't take on that.
16:44It was a lot, especially when I played it on Broadway.
16:47I was still a broken girl playing a broken woman's part.
16:51So that wasn't easy.
16:54I wanted far, far away from that.
16:57And I did it for a year on Broadway.
17:00And so when they came back and asked me, PTSD, I was just like, wait a minute.
17:06And I told them, I said, y'all got to give me a second.
17:10Let me pray about it.
17:12Because in anything that you do, make sure your heart is in it.
17:17Make sure it's something you actually feel like you can put your time in and give your all to.
17:23Because if not, it's just going to fail.
17:26And so I was like, y'all give me a second.
17:29Let me pray.
17:31I prayed.
17:33And I prayed.
17:35I talked to my family.
17:37And I just knew that, okay, you have to do this in this season for all the young girls.
17:43Like Zoe.
17:45For all of these young, black, beautiful girls, you got to do it.
17:48Because your story, not only are you playing a part, but after you play the part and you sit down and speak about it,
17:53your story is going to match up to why you played the part.
17:56And now they're going to take you really serious.
17:58And so I did it.
18:00Six months, right here in Atlanta.
18:02Six months.
18:03And I thought it was going to be very, very hard.
18:06Everything I thought, sis, didn't even happen.
18:09It was totally different from Broadway.
18:12Celie taught me so much.
18:14This time.
18:16Because I was in a different place.
18:18When I played it back then, the broken young lady was just playing a broken part.
18:22So I took nothing from it, but trauma.
18:25What did she teach you this time?
18:27This time, Celie was a businesswoman.
18:29Who watched the movie?
18:30The old and, okay, great.
18:32Everybody.
18:34I love y'all.
18:36If you ain't seen it, please go watch it.
18:38Color purple is what she's talking about for people who don't know.
18:40Just in case you don't know.
18:42Thanks, Jabari.
18:44But in the movie, outside of all the ugly and all the things, she ended up a what?
18:50A successful businesswoman.
18:53She had her own store.
18:55She made her own clothes.
18:57And she sold them.
18:58She said, you right there.
19:00I got you.
19:02What is that?
19:04A fan?
19:06All right.
19:08You better market that.
19:10You better leave here and make some, baby.
19:12It works.
19:14But she was a successful businesswoman.
19:17So while I was on set, even when, listen, you guys, we were starting at 4 o'clock in the morning.
19:23And sometimes we didn't get off till 4 o'clock in the morning.
19:25I had just had my baby.
19:28I'm going to tell y'all something else.
19:31I knew I was going through postpartum.
19:33I just had my daughter.
19:36I had to leave my other children.
19:38Now they followed me.
19:40My husband came, too, but he had to go work.
19:43So I had to be a big girl.
19:46I stand on my own two feet.
19:48But without Celie, I couldn't have done it.
19:50I would, after certain scenes would be, they would call cut.
19:52I would go over to the corner and be like, dang, Celie, you was the one.
19:58They was doing all that talking, girl, but you was the one.
20:02And I said, when I leave here, I'm going to take something from Celie,
20:06and I'm going to go ahead and I'm going to start my own, my other company.
20:09Rock Soul Productions.
20:11There you go.
20:13Yeah.
20:15And within that process.
20:16You know what I'm saying?
20:23Within that process, a couple more things to let you wrap up.
20:26Within that process, overcoming bankruptcy is one of the things that you were talking about.
20:30And you were in that.
20:32How did you learn and what did you learn about that?
20:34And now you're using to manage money.
20:36So, you know, a lot of times everywhere I go, I always tell people that I lost everything twice.
20:40And I think that everybody places that with bankruptcy.
20:42But for me, it was like I had a bunch of people on my team who said they were handling all the business.
20:50I look up and I owe a million dollars in taxes.
20:55And so because of that, my lawyer didn't show up to court and then they put my house up for auction.
21:01So I'm living in my house and I got my mom.
21:05At the time, Zion was a little girl.
21:07She's 22 now, but she was little.
21:09My little brother.
21:11Everybody in one house.
21:13We stayed in a nice big old mansion in Charlotte, North Carolina.
21:15I think it was LL's old house.
21:17So I really thought I was doing something.
21:19OK.
21:21And I get a knock at the door.
21:23And that was the first time I had ever been served.
21:26I'm looking at him like, you want to come in and get something to eat?
21:30Can I ask you some questions?
21:32You know, he just pulled out a word, bro.
21:35It's the truth.
21:36I'm thinking, what is the envelope?
21:38Can we talk about it?
21:40Because I ain't never been served.
21:42I mean, can I feed you out of you giving me this envelope?
21:47But that was the first time I had been served.
21:49I was like, he's like, you've been served.
21:51He was saying all these big words.
21:53I was like, OK.
21:55He leave.
21:57I close the door, Jabari.
21:59I'm like, Ma, I've been served.
22:01She come around the corner like, what?
22:03You know a black mama.
22:05She a preacher, but baby, don't push her.
22:09She's like, wait a minute.
22:11I'm still, like, I'm lost.
22:13And they said my house was going to be put up for auction.
22:17There was only one other option.
22:19I had to go out and I had to pay that a million dollars.
22:23Yeah.
22:25I took, I don't know where Doricas is, if he's even in the room.
22:31I took so many shows, y'all.
22:34To pay it off.
22:37I had already had too much going on with my name.
22:41I didn't, I'm thinking I don't need that.
22:44I paid out that a million dollars.
22:47No, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
22:53I'm going to come back with that.
22:56In the midst of paying out that a million dollars, I messed up both my needs.
23:02Let's talk about it.
23:04I had to have two knee surgeries.
23:07Tore my knees up.
23:09Trying to fix it.
23:11Then I was curious.
23:13I was like, okay, I keep hearing, because I say I lost everything.
23:16I lost it all.
23:18And then I just went back to work.
23:20I didn't file a bankruptcy.
23:22I didn't even know nothing about that.
23:24Nobody sat me down.
23:26I was like, look, this is what you can do.
23:28It was just like, either go to work or go to jail.
23:30That's all I kept thinking.
23:31And I wasn't ready for jail.
23:33Because I needed my nails done, my feet done, my hair done, my clothes done.
23:39Just kidding.
23:43I worked it off.
23:45But then I started doing my research and talking to some of these powerful people
23:49that got us placed in my life, like Dr. Lynn Richardson, Tyler Perry.
23:53And I always say my husband is a jewel.
23:56Bankruptcy ain't, listen, I ain't telling you to go file it,
23:59but I am telling you, don't lose everything you got
24:02trying to keep up with the Joneses.
24:05I don't want to say this and it come across bad,
24:07so let me scan the room right quick.
24:09Hold up.
24:17White, rich, white people file it all the time.
24:22To keep some of their money.
24:24So all I'm saying is this.
24:26We are proud because we've been through a lot.
24:31We have as black entrepreneurs, we have as black people, black women, black men.
24:36So we don't really want that a part of our record.
24:39And I'm not saying go file it, but I am still going to say,
24:42keep some of your money.
24:45Do it the right way.
24:47I got somebody on my team right now that's teaching me how to build wealth.
24:52I didn't know nothing about a trust.
24:54I didn't know you could hire your own chair in.
24:58I knew nothing about nothing.
25:00But now, honey, I get a kick out of it.
25:04Did you get what I said, young man?
25:07Now I get a kick out of it.
25:10You want to talk to me, girl, teach me something.
25:13Yeah.
25:15So that I can continue to build.
25:17That's right.
25:19And open doors for other young black people so that they can leave this world
25:22and die with a legacy and not be broke or broken.
25:28That's right.

26:35I failed, but I pray as my husband would say, that when I leave, before I
