00:00:00Batista doesn't give much away on the touchline and a quite different scenario really to the
00:00:12exuberant emotion surrounding this Venezuela side. It's more than a football match for them,
00:00:18Jesse Marsh knows that and Canada have to cope with it. Quite honestly I've never seen a group
00:00:25of players burst onto the field for the warm-up the way this Venezuela side did here.
00:00:32And you saw the faces of the fans during the anthem bursting into tears everywhere around
00:00:37the stadium. They've got to guard surely against getting carried away emotionally.
00:00:42Canada ice cool, very combative and although they're not exactly a spectacular outfit,
00:00:51they are showing they know how to stay in games.
00:01:09So what a build-up this has been here in Texas. Here we go with the second of the quarterfinals
00:01:16at Copa America 2024. Argentina pushed even to their limits by Ecuador in the first quarter
00:01:29but they got there on penalties.
00:01:35This goalkeeper here not quite perhaps as well known as Emi Martinez but Romo has been very
00:01:40good indeed for Venezuela. And as I mentioned Crepo in the other goal,
00:01:48the man that Artista's players have got to beat tonight and that's no easy task.
00:02:03Romo's saved one big penalty in his own right already in this tournament in the game against
00:02:06Mexico. Osorio gave it to Ferrarese, Ferrarese back in the side tonight. That was the combination
00:02:16for the first game of the tournament. Venezuela up against it for so long against Ecuador but
00:02:26they turned it round most impressively in the second half. Back to front from Canada and here's
00:02:32another player who's had a terrific tournament so far down the left for them. Jeff Schaffelberg
00:02:37denied by Romo. Schaffelberg got his first start of this tournament and actually only his second
00:02:44ever competitive start for Canada on match day three after excelling off the bench
00:02:50in the first two games. Alistair Johnson of Celtic.
00:02:54He's drilled into the corner for Richie Laria to try to run on to.
00:03:06So Jesse Maher scarcely a month in the job.
00:03:10Life is timing and of course guaranteed a slot at the FIFA World Cup.
00:03:24Schaffelberg didn't really tidy that up in midfield and here goes Rondon. He's got stronger the longer
00:03:41the tournament's gone. Crepo grabs it second time with Soteldo coming in from the other flank.
00:03:47Rondon irrepressible and seemingly ageless and I thought it was quite noticeable how calm he appeared
00:03:56to be compared to the frenzy of emotion all around him in the build-up to this
00:04:01game at the age of 34 of course he's seen it all.
00:04:17Schaffelberg. What a poor pass actually with Alphonso Davies outside of his captain.
00:04:28That was deemed to be a problem area I understand for Canada coming into this tournament but they
00:04:34reckon they've got the fix now with Davies and Schaffelberg. Very unlucky to lose
00:04:40Tejan Buchanan of course that shapes to be a long-term absence.
00:04:47A lot of upset teammates apparently during the training session when he did break his leg.
00:04:58Again Navarro.
00:05:01Trying to keep Rondon in the action early on.
00:05:03And Estapio up to his keeper Crepo. Soteldo very nearly stole that. Johnston recovered it well.
00:05:15Mbito Terenza has a little look in the direction of his keeper but they all over him and they've
00:05:19all said that. Up-tempo start here from Venezuela. Johnston again.
00:05:26Estapio of Porto.
00:05:37The centre-backs for Canada Moise Mbito.
00:05:41Of the Colorado Rapids and Derek Cornelius of Malmo in Sweden.
00:05:46That was Cornelius. Kyle Larrin is up front again.
00:06:00Schaffelberg into the box he goes. Little contact with the defender.
00:06:07John Aramboro.
00:06:17Rondon beaten to it by Johnston.
00:06:27Aramboro is pretty quick in his own right and he seemed to be struggling there a little bit.
00:06:31He has played both sides right back and left back in this tournament incidentally.
00:06:35But Schaffelberg has been a really lively customer.
00:06:47Hortense Sampao the referee is told to get on with it.
00:06:54Not exactly hanging around either of these sides are they early on.
00:07:04Estapio. Couldn't find Larrin. Maceres turned it back to his keeper.
00:07:11Johnston was caught. Referee does give the free kick this time to Canada.
00:07:41Estapio.
00:07:55Estapio.
00:08:11Incidentally a player's had a brilliant season with Girona who've been the success story of the
00:08:1623-24 La Liga season in Spain heading into the UEFA Champions League next season.
00:08:21No praise really high enough for the job that Fernando Batista has been doing for Venezuela.
00:08:25Another of the Argentine coaches at this tournament.
00:08:29Worked a lot with Argentina's underage teams over the years.
00:08:36Rewriting Venezuelan football history. They've done better over the last 15 years in the Copa
00:08:40America than their performances in World Cup qualification which frankly been abysmal.
00:08:46World Cup qualification which frankly been abysmal but the whole country of course
00:08:52nearly torn asunder by its internal political problems and a sense of a national occasion.
00:09:00So many exuberant young Venezuelan fans following the team during this brilliant tournament.
00:09:08Showing a brighter side to life at home and a brighter future they hope.
00:09:14And certainly some bright young footballers.
00:09:20There's one of them, Belo. Belo's found the knack of goal scoring in this tournament.
00:09:25Powerful from Herrera. Belo goes again.
00:09:30Martinez shut down.
00:09:34By Schaffelberg.
00:09:35Venezuela testing Canada out but the pace of Schaffelberg has already been a problem to this guy Aramburu with the throw.
00:09:55Just a little too much on that for Belo.
00:09:58Played in his direction by Herrera.
00:10:17As you may be aware Venezuela the only country from the CONMEBOL confederation.
00:10:24The 10 nations making up South America never to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
00:10:33But they rather fancy they're going to put an end to that
00:10:36unwanted record. They've made a terrific start to qualify for the 26th tournament.
00:10:45Their best in the Copa America 2011 when they finished fourth.
00:10:49They reached the quarterfinals in 2016.
00:10:54Sent home by Argentina and again in 2019. Same story but the other tournaments all around that
00:11:01the World Cup campaigns and indeed the Copa America last time in 21 they finished bottom of each group.
00:11:13Constantine that well.
00:11:19So
00:11:33Caceres
00:11:49a reminder from the referee in the direction of Alistair Johnston.
00:12:06Got done by Rondon. Sotelo got involved.
00:12:10Loving lovely touch. Here's Jonathan David.
00:12:13Loving through the middle. Goalkeepers come for it. Oh he did so well Romo but he's got to get back.
00:12:20Amazing clearance first time and Larin denied the second time.
00:12:24Canada came so close. Huge appeals for a penalty here but well played Romo.
00:12:35Larin was through. Romo saw the danger coming his way. Amazing from Jonathan David.
00:12:40Outstanding first block and the second one by Aramburu also looked good to me.
00:12:50Some pre-game previews said this would be quite tense and cautious.
00:12:58Not a bit of it. Johnston's throw. Romo clears it. Man down.
00:13:06Venezuela going to get a free kick.
00:13:11Have another look. That's perfect from David isn't it? Larin's yet to score in the tournament.
00:13:20I think he's actually claiming that it was the goalkeeper outside the box who handled it
00:13:25and the call was picked up by the people on the bench. Aramburu wasn't having any of that.
00:13:29He did brilliantly. Twice over. But there was a little bit of extra insurance second time
00:13:36from Ferraresi and the chance goes for Larin.
00:13:47Here goes David now.
00:13:51Goal for Canada. Schafferberg tucked it in.
00:13:56They're meeting fire with fire here and Canada strike first.
00:14:03Schafferberg denied that early penalty claim but a real live wire through the tournament.
00:14:12Only his third international goal and I fancy that shirt will be a tribute aimed at Tejon
00:14:18Buchanan when we see that shot in a moment. But there's the touch that really counted.
00:14:23Romo couldn't adjust. Jonathan David looks his lively best tonight all right and sure enough
00:14:29that is the salute for poor Tejon Buchanan who broke his leg on Thursday.
00:14:38What a start to this quarterfinal.
00:14:43So
00:14:57that's only Canada's second goal in the whole tournament.
00:15:02Larin to David. Larin, Jonathan David and the deflection looked a little bit tame the shot
00:15:09from Larin when it came I must say but Venezuela looked shaken. We mentioned how they looked
00:15:16almost overcome by emotion in the run-up to this game tonight. Some of these Venezuelan
00:15:21players, the younger ones particularly, they need focus and concentration. Canada don't seem to me
00:15:28to be the sort to get carried away and of course they came through a long and successful qualifying
00:15:36campaign for the last World Cup even if it went wrong when they got to Qatar.
00:15:46That's to say nothing of just how demanding the
00:15:51first group of this tournament was. But what a tournament it has been
00:15:57and the addition of the CONCACAF nations a whole new dimension here.
00:16:06So
00:16:18So
00:16:35that's the kind of ball that Solomon Rondon has made a living, a very good living converting.
00:16:41So
00:16:43Canada get away with it.
00:16:53Soteldo just steadied himself. It's a great cross and Rondon will know.
00:16:58That should have been testing Crepo to his maximum.
00:17:02Here come Venezuela with Herrera. Stopped well by Cornelius.
00:17:17Misplaced by David.
00:17:33Navarro.
00:17:36Soteldo.
00:17:41There's a reach Rondon, Bambito, Shuffleburg gave it away. Soteldo again.
00:18:02This time it's Cornelius who's given it away. Rondon.
00:18:2341 international goals in 105 games.
00:18:30Canada can't afford to keep on giving him chances.
00:18:33So
00:18:40Crepo slams it up there now. Slotting to gather it in but he can't do that.
00:18:55So
00:19:10and a very good one incidentally. Moved by Manchester City to São Paulo.
00:19:19Long way to go says Batista and he's quite right.
00:19:25So
00:19:30again another telling little feature of the final minutes before this game.
00:19:34Not only were they giving it
00:19:38full barrels during the warm-up the Venezuela players but they were out in the tunnel
00:19:44maybe five minutes before the official call time and Canada came out at the very last second and
00:19:50there's obviously been a little bit of a back story during the tournament about teams and
00:19:55coaches getting in trouble for not being on time but Canada timed it to perfection.
00:20:02Just kind of underlined that the Venezuelans couldn't wait to get their teeth into this
00:20:06tonight.
00:20:12He gave off the air that Canada were cool, calm and composed the way they came out.
00:20:20And they stood up to be counted. Nearly 20 minutes on the clock. Great
00:20:31beginning to this game.
00:20:35Two or three other chances for Canada. One big chance for Rondon, Squandered for Venezuela.
00:20:39Oh what a cross and they've missed it.
00:21:00Batista cannot believe it.
00:21:01There's a lot of special categories in this tournament but cross of the tournament surely
00:21:14that was from John Aramburu and Venezuela didn't convert it.
00:21:22Bello takes the corner short for Soteldo. Eduardo Bello again.
00:21:26Aramburu gets it back in there. Rondon saved by Krepel.
00:21:39And again not quite the header that Rondon was hoping to put on that.
00:21:56Martinez a bit unlucky.
00:22:05It's D'Aquile, David.
00:22:09Schaffelberg got it, wanted to continue with it.
00:22:20Something certainly clicked in this tournament for Jakob Schaffelberg. He's been
00:22:24a backup player really for Canada.
00:22:30It's the kind of thing that happens with a new coach sometimes, just a new beginning.
00:22:41D'Aquile did well. Alphonso Davies,
00:22:46sooner or later bound to try to make his presence felt going forward.
00:22:54Cornelius. Every touch being cheered all around the vast AT&T Stadium.
00:23:13Now Soteldo. Into the box he goes. Not the precision Venezuela needed there.
00:23:20It was a good chase by Martinez but he couldn't keep it.
00:23:25D'Estaquio.
00:23:29Bombito.
00:23:35Soria was run off that one.
00:23:37Soteldo.
00:23:43Composure a key component tonight.
00:23:46And D'Artista might do with a bit more.
00:23:48Have a look at this cross from Aramburu.
00:23:50Takes everybody out of it.
00:23:52All it needed was for Herrera to get there and he couldn't quite do so.
00:23:58What about the clearance?
00:24:06Alistair Johnston.
00:24:16Osorio.
00:24:18Jordan Osorio playing for Venezuela incidentally and Jonathan Osorio of Canada.
00:24:26Jonathan Osorio is actually of Colombian descent.
00:24:38Johnston.
00:24:46Here's Larine. Lively tonight.
00:24:48It's great build up play.
00:24:50Schafferberg.
00:24:52Oh so close to a second.
00:24:54Romo equal to the task this time.
00:25:04We've seen sides to Canada tonight not witnessed in this tournament beforehand.
00:25:08So lively up front.
00:25:10Larine rolled it nicely.
00:25:12Laria.
00:25:15Composure a plenty there from Schafferberg.
00:25:17But Romo turned it round his post.
00:25:25Question mark whether the occasion has gotten to some of the Venezuela players a little bit.
00:25:29But Canada are most certainly rising to the occasion.
00:25:35Estacio with their corner.
00:25:39Alphonso Davies was thinking about something special there.
00:25:45But it's a great recovery by Canada's young captain.
00:26:01Soteldo.
00:26:03Taking Johnston on again.
00:26:05Johnston's been superb tonight so far.
00:26:15In from Soteldo.
00:26:17Right in there.
00:26:19Got more of his own man on the ball I think.
00:26:21Davies.
00:26:23Soteldo.
00:26:25Soteldo.
00:26:27Soteldo.
00:26:29Soteldo.
00:26:31Soteldo.
00:26:33Soteldo.
00:26:35Soteldo.
00:26:37Soteldo.
00:26:39Soteldo.
00:26:42Davies.
00:26:46Brilliantly composed.
00:26:48What a piece of work.
00:26:50Schafferberg goes again.
00:26:52Jonathan David is free.
00:26:54Here comes Jonathan David.
00:26:56And he has missed it.
00:26:58And nobody supporting Canada anywhere in the world can believe what we've just seen.
00:27:06He can't believe it.
00:27:09Superb from Davies.
00:27:11And from Schafferberg.
00:27:13Nobody was catching David.
00:27:17Let's give Romo the credit again.
00:27:19He got out to him so quickly.
00:27:23But David thought he had the measure of it.
00:27:25Remember he broke free and scored the decisive goal in the group.
00:27:29Against Peru on matchday 2 with everything on the line.
00:27:33That would have made it 2-0 here to Canada.
00:27:35Inside 26 minutes.
00:27:39They did little more than hang on
00:27:41and keep it tight as best they could
00:27:43against Argentina on matchday 1.
00:27:45Canada.
00:27:47It was a really tight game
00:27:49against Peru.
00:27:51And of course a nil-nil against Chile
00:27:53on matchday 3.
00:27:55That's the route by which Canada got through their group.
00:27:57It was a really tight game
00:27:59against Peru.
00:28:01And of course a nil-nil against Chile
00:28:03on matchday 3.
00:28:05That's the route by which Canada got through their group.
00:28:08And at no stage
00:28:10did they suggest themselves
00:28:12to be full of attacking intent.
00:28:14But it's different tonight.
00:28:26Every touch,
00:28:28every free kick, every corner
00:28:30cheered in every corner
00:28:32of this stadium
00:28:34by this amazing
00:28:36Venezuela support tonight.
00:28:50Krepel has kept them out so far.
00:28:54Velo with the free kick.
00:29:00Martinez is free on the edge of the box here.
00:29:06Krepel.
00:29:20Krepel thought better than come for that one.
00:29:26Larine couldn't tidy it up.
00:29:30Mischief by Herrera.
00:29:36Krepel.
00:29:38Krepel.
00:29:40Krepel.
00:29:42Krepel.
00:29:44Krepel.
00:29:46Krepel.
00:29:48Krepel.
00:29:50Krepel.
00:29:52Krepel.
00:29:54Krepel.
00:29:56Krepel.
00:29:58Krepel.
00:30:00Krepel.
00:30:02Krepel.
00:30:05Osorio's header.
00:30:09Martinez.
00:30:11Aramburu.
00:30:23Navarro.
00:30:27Safety pass this time
00:30:29by Gombito.
00:30:31All things considered, not a bad idea.
00:30:34Canada.
00:30:4413 shots already.
00:30:50But Canada really should be more than 1-0 up.
00:30:58Chapobo.
00:31:00That's just a shade too strong.
00:31:04Johnson again, brilliant on the follow-up there.
00:31:12Staquio, nicely done.
00:31:14Schaffelberg, Aramburu out to him.
00:31:16Can't stop the cross.
00:31:18And again it nearly fell for Jonathan David.
00:31:20Oh and it somehow eludes Larine
00:31:22as it goes back across the goal
00:31:24and another great opportunity
00:31:26is spurned by Canada.
00:31:28Larine played it toward that far post.
00:31:34Maybe Larine was trying to bend it in
00:31:36with the outside of his right boot.
00:31:38He wasn't going to do that
00:31:40but I think Larine was onside
00:31:42and all he needed was to find another millimetre
00:31:44to touch it home.
00:31:52And still the wait goes on
00:31:54for Kyle Larine to score a goal in this tournament.
00:31:56Will Canada rule this
00:31:58at the end of it?
00:32:04Sotelo.
00:32:14Seen off by Johnston.
00:32:34Even the thud of the ball
00:32:36on somebody's head
00:32:38echoes right up into the roof space here
00:32:40with the roof closed in the AT&T Stadium.
00:33:04Now Bello.
00:33:20I think I heard Crepeau shouting out there
00:33:22the goalkeeper, switch on, switch on.
00:33:24I think everybody totally switched on here.
00:33:26And most gripping
00:33:28entertainment it has proven to be
00:33:30so far.
00:33:34Navarro.
00:33:40The cooler head prevails for a moment.
00:33:42Romo.
00:33:46Johnston maybe got a bit of luck
00:33:48but he's probably earned it.
00:33:50Terrific showing tonight
00:33:52from the Celtic right back so far
00:33:54as we look at the Bayern Munich
00:33:56left back.
00:33:58Well future uncertain actually but
00:34:00as you are aware I'm sure
00:34:02that's where he's made his name in the game.
00:34:08Shackelberg.
00:34:10Denied ferociously
00:34:12by Ferraresi and he's not moving Shackelberg.
00:34:14Jonathan Davids actually
00:34:16indicated to the Canada bench.
00:34:18Larine stops the game.
00:34:20He knew what he was doing there Larine.
00:34:32A very awkward
00:34:34fall.
00:34:44And hopefully for Canada
00:34:46no more than a very awkward fall.
00:35:02And hopefully for Canada
00:35:04no more than a very awkward fall.
00:35:32Hopefully for Canada
00:35:34and for Shackelberg that will settle down.
00:35:38Looks to be moving okay.
00:35:44Some part of the referee just tells Venezuela
00:35:46to hold their horses for a moment.
00:36:02Shackelberg is back out there
00:36:04maybe a bit too quickly.
00:36:08That's the card for the player or the coach
00:36:10here I wonder.
00:36:12Shackelberg.
00:36:14Shackleberg.
00:36:16Shackleberg.
00:36:18Shackleberg.
00:36:20Shackleberg.
00:36:22Shackleberg.
00:36:24Shackleberg.
00:36:26Shackleberg.
00:36:28Shackleberg.
00:36:30There's the answer.
00:36:32There's a lot of unhappy
00:36:34people on that Canada bench right now.
00:36:38Othello takes this free kick for Venezuela.
00:36:40Venezuela.
00:36:46Guerrero got a piece of it but it was offside.
00:37:10Guerrero.
00:37:40Osorio.
00:37:46Navarro.
00:37:58That was
00:38:00a moment to sum up Venezuela's
00:38:02furious enthusiasm
00:38:04there as Caceres elbowed
00:38:06his own man Herrera to the ground to get
00:38:08the ball. Now they're right back
00:38:10as it. Aramburu.
00:38:16And if this is the first time
00:38:18you've seen Venezuela in the tournament
00:38:20I can tell you
00:38:22they've played pretty much like this
00:38:24right from the first moment of the first game
00:38:26and they were given a pummeling by Ecuador
00:38:28in the first half of the
00:38:30first game but they just kept on
00:38:32going.
00:38:34Credit to him.
00:38:37And admittedly ascending off
00:38:39in that first half which
00:38:41did something to interrupt Ecuador's
00:38:43flow.
00:38:47But the victory was all their own work.
00:38:49Caceres.
00:39:02Martinez couldn't find a way
00:39:04through, David.
00:39:06Stopped in his tracks.
00:39:12And against
00:39:14Estaquio and against Canada.
00:39:35Belo.
00:39:37Aramburu going again down the right.
00:39:39Goal kick.
00:39:46Never afraid to make a change if it's not
00:39:48working. The Venezuelan coach
00:39:50Marsh.
00:39:52Sticking with the backbone of the same team throughout
00:39:54the tournament so far. Goalkeeper
00:39:56and back four undisturbed at any point.
00:39:58Estaquio.
00:40:01David.
00:40:03And Larine played every minute.
00:40:11Rondon won't chase that one.
00:40:29Aramburu read it well.
00:40:32Larine.
00:40:34Aramburu again.
00:40:38Motto of the tournament, rocking
00:40:40the continent.
00:40:43This Copa America quarter-final
00:40:45living up to the billing.
00:40:54Because they were ahead of Rondon.
00:40:58Needed to put a bit of air on it just to make sure
00:41:00it wasn't going to be dropping for somebody
00:41:02to try to chip it over him on his
00:41:04retreat.
00:41:15Caradesi to Osorio.
00:41:19Osorio.
00:41:21As I mentioned, that's Jordan Osorio
00:41:23of Venezuela, the player with the ball at his feet
00:41:25right now, looking forward to a
00:41:27potential Serie A campaign in Italy.
00:41:29He was promoted with Parma
00:41:31last season from Serie B.
00:41:53Rondon does get that one.
00:42:00He went very high,
00:42:02but not very far.
00:42:06There have been occasions apparently in this stadium
00:42:08where the NFL
00:42:10punters have hit their big screens
00:42:12in the stadium above
00:42:14the level
00:42:16of the crowd.
00:42:23David takes it off Soteldo.
00:42:30Gets his free kick.
00:42:36It's a bit more than that, but
00:42:38he should mind his manners really and he should know that.
00:42:41Casares was the
00:42:43Venezuelan.
00:42:59Johnston is struggling.
00:43:16Rotary is struggling to
00:43:19make his instructions clear at this precise
00:43:21moment. Here comes the
00:43:23assistance for Alistair Johnston.
00:43:29Here comes the
00:43:31assistance for Alistair Johnston.
00:43:33Here comes the
00:43:35assistance for Alistair Johnston.
00:43:37Here comes the
00:43:39assistance for Alistair Johnston.
00:43:41Here comes the
00:43:43assistance for Alistair Johnston.
00:43:45Here comes the
00:43:47assistance for Alistair Johnston.
00:43:49Here comes the
00:43:51assistance for Alistair Johnston.
00:43:53Here comes the
00:43:55assistance for Alistair Johnston.
00:43:57Uncertainly caught by Herrera
00:43:59from the look of it.
00:44:02Accidents will happen.
00:44:06Not a player that Canada can afford to lose.
00:44:09They're right back.
00:44:27Alphonso Davies.
00:44:38Osorio did very well. Jonathan Osorio, that is, for Canada.
00:44:43Ostatkuyor.
00:44:49Mourinhos to Davies.
00:44:58Shackelberg goes again.
00:45:01Adam Bourou, what a tackle.
00:45:03That might be tackle of the tournament so far.
00:45:06We've given him cross of the tournament so far.
00:45:27Shackelberg being a threat again.
00:45:46Adi is also getting a ticking off from the referee.
00:45:50Largely been handled pretty well by Wilton Sampao so far.
00:45:55It's the one card for Shackelberg and that was almost incidental really.
00:46:01A minor infraction, a ferociously competitive game for obvious reasons.
00:46:07All on the right side of the line so far.
00:46:15Ostatkuyor is penalised.
00:46:24The first half.
00:46:54Sotelo.
00:47:13Over intricate perhaps.
00:47:15Shackelberg.
00:47:26Adam Bourou.
00:47:29Did really well there.
00:47:40Adam Bourou plays for Real Sociedad.
00:47:45Ostatkuyor.
00:48:01Rondon.
00:48:03Off Johnston's head.
00:48:04Sotelo wasn't going to try and let it run.
00:48:06He tries to run infield with it.
00:48:08Sotelo.
00:48:13Adam Bourou.
00:48:16Ostatkuyor really did well.
00:48:19Out to David.
00:48:20Now will David go on the outside?
00:48:21No.
00:48:23Shown inside by Ferrarese.
00:48:24Did well.
00:48:25Here's Davies.
00:48:26He can go on the outside.
00:48:27And so can this guy, Shackelberg.
00:48:33Martinez came across.
00:48:39Cornelius.
00:48:41Davies.
00:48:48More good work by Adam Bourou.
00:49:08Rondon's header on.
00:49:18Bello.
00:49:19Sotelo.
00:49:21Johnston again.
00:49:22In there where it really counted.
00:49:23Look at the fist pump by the full-back.
00:49:28Made Crepo's job so easy there.
00:49:31This was Johnston's throw-up to Jonathan David.
00:49:34And the goal tucked in by Shackelberg.
00:49:36Quick thinking rewarded there.
00:49:39A lot of chances have come and gone at both ends since then.
00:49:45More for Canada, truth be told.
00:50:03Davies.
00:50:04He keeps on threatening in the last few minutes to go forward and really hurt Venezuela.
00:50:16Soteldo.
00:50:17Might be the last opportunity in this half for Venezuela.
00:50:20And no foul.
00:50:21Johnston saw him off.
00:50:30It is finally half-time.
00:50:34That was memorable.
00:50:36It's 1-0 to Canada.
00:50:39Canada have spurned three or four other great chances.
00:50:43But Jacob Shackelberg got the ball in the net.
00:50:47Venezuela full of frenzy.
00:50:50Full of fireworks.
00:50:53But they cannot take the chances tonight that have come their way.
00:50:57And their leader in every sense, Solomon Rondon, I'm afraid.
00:51:03Leads the list of culprits in that sense at half-time.
00:51:07But what a contest this has proven to be.
00:51:10Canada knew they needed more than they'd shown in the group.
00:51:13But who really knew they'd quite as much by way of attacking intent.
00:51:17They've really taken it to Venezuela.
00:51:20And Venezuela maybe have been a little stymied by that.
00:51:25But we'll be lucky indeed if we see a second half as good as that first half.
00:51:30Venezuela, nil.
00:51:32Canada, one.
00:51:33Venezuela, one.
00:51:34?!
00:52:02Welcome back everybody.
00:52:03are preparing to get underway here in the AUTMT Stadium. There's only one
00:52:07ingredient missing right now and that is Canada who lead by a goal to nil.
00:52:13Venezuela already out on the park ready to go and obviously very keen to get on
00:52:19with it indeed. Some might see the irony in Canada being the second team out here
00:52:25given that Jesse Marsh the Canada coach was one of the coaches who pointed out
00:52:32the misdeeds of others in this respect during the group phase.
00:52:37A couple of coaching suspensions actually.
00:52:42As per the build-up to the start of the game tonight making Venezuela wait for
00:52:48them they've just got to hope that they're not on the clock themselves here.
00:52:52But what a game it's been and Canada most certainly these players have risen
00:52:56to the test. Venezuela to remind you three wins out of three in the group.
00:53:11A lot of people would see the irony if there were to be ramifications for the
00:53:16Canada coach. Nonetheless Jesse Marsh has got a tremendous performance level out
00:53:21of these Canada players so far tonight.
00:53:24Solomon Rondon has spread a couple of big chances for Venezuela but Canada
00:53:29could and should be further in front than just one nil.
00:53:45The referee gets us going underway.
00:53:51The goal scorer also booked in that first half which was very fair but ferocious.
00:54:05Harambeuru one of the many success stories on an individual level both ways in that first half.
00:54:14The most pleasing thing for Canada perhaps is that the Canadians
00:54:20individually showed a side to their game we'd not really seen during this
00:54:23tournament. Venezuela have been winning so many admirers right from the start of
00:54:28the campaign in Copa America. Soteldo down the right, Sotoldo on the left in the first half.
00:54:40Seen off by Davies.
00:54:42Venezuela get the throw, quickly taken. Sotoldo, wasn't a great touch but Osorio was there to block his way.
00:54:54Jonathan Osorio did well.
00:54:56Massive crowd. Largely made up of Venezuela fans.
00:55:16Good claim by Krepel for Canada.
00:55:26Fancy that ball actually went out before it swung back into play.
00:55:36Canada goal kick.
00:55:48Venezuela's coach Fernando Bautista has changed the team around throughout the tournament.
00:55:53A much more settled unit for Canada.
00:56:10Big, big leap for Canada's national team if they were to progress to a Copa America semi-final.
00:56:18And I may also suggest a very, very big leap in the career of Jesse Marsh.
00:56:25If he could be the man in charge of a team reaching the semi-final.
00:56:37Only a month in the job.
00:56:48Sotoldo definitely has been redeployed by Bautista.
00:56:58He is on the right and Bello has been shifted out to the left side.
00:57:09No other changes in personnel for the moment.
00:57:19And there's he.
00:57:22Was injured in the first game.
00:57:28Back in the side tonight.
00:57:35Thumbs up to the referee.
00:57:49As explosive as this Venezuela side are, I think Canada deserve a lot of credit for being pretty methodical in their approach.
00:58:13What a duel it's been between those two.
00:58:16Sotoldo, looking a bit more comfortable on the right if anything.
00:58:24Gets the free kick and the yellow is not even contested. Cornelius.
00:58:45Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please.
00:58:54Yellow card caution for Canada's number 13, Eric Cornelius.
00:59:01Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please.
00:59:06Yellow card caution for Canada's number 13, Eric Cornelius.
00:59:31Headed it clear.
00:59:38And what we've seen of Venezuela through the tournament so far perhaps a little surprising that Bautista hasn't made a change.
00:59:46Only because we've seen so many by him during the games.
00:59:51One might argue that most of his players are playing very well indeed on an individual level.
00:59:55But Bautista has made his mark in this tournament by coming up with something different.
01:00:01Taking it all the way back to match day one when he introduced Bello.
01:00:06And he was a goal scorer against Ecuador.
01:00:17And he kept going.
01:00:18Kept going.
01:00:22Did well. David, no free kick.
01:00:35For Sorior.
01:00:39Bombito to Johnston who's been excellent tonight.
01:00:43Larine! Another chance goes begging for Canada.
01:00:55Does he fear the worst here? Jesse Marsh.
01:00:59There could be three up now easily.
01:01:02And cruising into the semi-final.
01:01:12Schaffelberg scored one, was denied another one.
01:01:15Jonathan David missed an absolute sitter.
01:01:19Larine couldn't quite stretch out to convert.
01:01:22Larias cross shot.
01:01:25All those chances went in the first half and now another one for Kyle Larine here.
01:01:37If they do not go through that is where the blame will lie tonight.
01:01:42Venezuela have ridden their luck in that sense.
01:01:53Riding a wave of emotion all around this stadium.
01:01:58Soteldo over Rondon but here's Bello.
01:02:02The knockdown wasn't bad.
01:02:13Great ball out to Soteldo.
01:02:15Coming to life a little bit here.
01:02:17Deflection on the cross.
01:02:19Rastaquio couldn't clear it.
01:02:21Aramburu.
01:02:25And it's over the top the other way.
01:02:28Martinez misses the chance.
01:02:33And Canada breathe again.
01:02:42Horrible miss.
01:03:06Osorio.
01:03:12Jonathan Osorio clattered into his man.
01:03:42Taken out of Jonathan David's path there.
01:04:04Rondon.
01:04:07Martinez covering Bambito.
01:04:14Keep calm he says, keep calm, easier said than done.
01:04:17But he has been calm.
01:04:19An assuring presence for Canada back there.
01:04:21Bambito's not had his best night perhaps under all this pressure.
01:04:26But the right back certainly has been right on top of his game, Johnston.
01:04:32And that's a foul on Osorio.
01:04:40Further ramifications.
01:04:48Navarro is off his feet.
01:05:02No card we don't think.
01:05:16Aramburu got to it first.
01:05:18Bambito for Canada.
01:05:20Lorin.
01:05:23He's not going to get in there had it dropped off Ferraresi.
01:05:32What a great pass by Navarro.
01:05:35What a great recovery it was by Herrera.
01:05:38He has gotten a free kick this time.
01:05:48Canada of course two, three years ago came through so many testers
01:05:54on their route to the FIFA World Cup finals.
01:05:57But this is a level up in many ways.
01:06:00Krepo has to tip it over the top.
01:06:03What a spectacular that would have been by Bello.
01:06:16Unlucky.
01:06:28Edward Bello is out there to take the corner now.
01:06:37Cornelius again.
01:06:41Martinez.
01:06:43Taken off him by Davies.
01:06:46That's not bad.
01:06:48Romo positioned himself brilliantly and therefore the slice didn't matter so much.
01:06:56He earned his good fortune.
01:07:14Jonathan David.
01:07:25I keep looking to find the little holes to exploit Canada.
01:07:45They are looking as shade vulnerable perhaps.
01:07:47Defensively.
01:07:49And they are going to make a change.
01:07:51And it is Caseras, Christian Caseras who is coming off.
01:07:56Shades of the opener against Ecuador.
01:08:05Yonder Cadiz.
01:08:13In that game against Ecuador they were trailing at half time.
01:08:16Cadiz came on and scored.
01:08:19About three or four minutes from now.
01:08:22And then Bello who was also a substitute.
01:08:25Brought them the winner.
01:08:46It's not real.
01:08:48What a challenge.
01:08:52Full stretch.
01:08:54Perfectly executed by Bernadese.
01:08:58Herrera.
01:08:59Gets it back.
01:09:04Comfortable for Cornelius.
01:09:10Schöpfer bags out on that right flank just at the moment.
01:09:12Jonathan David to the left side.
01:09:15Soteldo.
01:09:25Bernadese.
01:09:35The break is on.
01:09:37Venezuela have to regroup.
01:09:40Richie Laria goes on for Canada.
01:09:45I am not sure he really knew what he wanted to do with that.
01:09:49And another moment.
01:09:51Add that to the pile of missed opportunities tonight for Canada.
01:10:07His team are riding their luck at the back tonight certainly.
01:10:11But it's how they like to roll.
01:10:17Jakob Schafferberg.
01:10:19Big contribution.
01:10:21The all important goal tonight.
01:10:23But it might have been more.
01:10:25And he comes off.
01:10:28To be replaced by Liam Miller.
01:10:36Preston North End in England.
01:10:40Started his career at Liverpool.
01:11:10And it's Cadiz.
01:11:33To David.
01:11:34Couldn't keep it.
01:11:36Osorio comes away with it.
01:11:39Soteldo.
01:11:43Miller did well.
01:11:45A snap goal.
01:11:46Cuts infield rather than give it back to Miller.
01:11:48Miller's not happy about that.
01:11:49Larin chases.
01:11:50Goalkeeper gets there first.
01:11:52But he's a long way out of his goal.
01:12:09Wouldn't rush to conclusions.
01:12:12But I see Jesse Marsh's point there.
01:12:16Romo.
01:12:18Was.
01:12:20Feeling a little bit isolated.
01:12:22Let's put it like that.
01:12:23But then again they went crazy on the touchline.
01:12:25For a handball.
01:12:26And on.
01:12:27Arguing there was absolutely no.
01:12:30Issue whatsoever.
01:12:31Romo coming out of his box in the first half.
01:12:38The race is on.
01:12:39Rondon.
01:12:41Shuffles.
01:12:42Bombito to the side.
01:12:44What a goal.
01:12:48Even by his standards.
01:12:50He's come out with the great goals in a great career.
01:12:53And Venezuela a level in the Cup of America.
01:12:57Crepo.
01:12:58Canada's flawless goalkeeper so far in this tournament is caught out.
01:13:04Who else?
01:13:09Their all-time hero.
01:13:11Solomon Rondon.
01:13:18It was a race.
01:13:20Crepo just was never getting back quickly enough.
01:13:23Rondon put the brakes on.
01:13:26Mr. Cool.
01:13:28With the world of frenzy all around him.
01:13:31With the world of frenzy all around him.
01:13:33But what a goal.
01:13:41A goal for the ages.
01:13:43Whatever happens from here.
01:13:53Missed a couple of chances in the first half that normally he would expect of himself to take.
01:14:00Nobody has a right to expect anyone to do that at any time.
01:14:06But then again he's rather special, isn't he?
01:14:23I think the stadium announcer should be stood down.
01:14:25Nobody can hear a word.
01:14:27Here come Canada.
01:14:28It's Miller.
01:14:31Tame shot when it came.
01:14:33Comfortable for Romo who was living dangerously only moments before.
01:14:37This is football on the edge.
01:14:39This is elite.
01:14:41This is ferocious.
01:14:44This is everything the Cup of America has ever stood for.
01:14:48But with a new twist.
01:14:50When it's one of the CONCACAF nations.
01:14:52Eyeball to eyeball with one of the countries from South America.
01:15:00And surely we're looking at the future for this competition.
01:15:05And what a contest still to play out.
01:15:07Miller goes again for Canada.
01:15:09He's missed by millimetres this time.
01:15:25He can't believe it.
01:15:27Jonathan David did brilliantly.
01:15:30It's a tight angle.
01:15:31But he had the measure of it.
01:15:32And Romo by the nearest of margins got the right toe to that.
01:15:40The other Canada players thought it was going in anyway.
01:15:57Jonathan Osorio.
01:16:11That's Rondon, of course.
01:16:15Here's Alphonso Davies.
01:16:18They break free again with Bello.
01:16:20Rondon had to slow down.
01:16:23Bello doesn't quite reach Cadiz.
01:16:27But it nearly did.
01:16:47The fans of Venezuela say to those of Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay.
01:17:00Anything you can do, we can do better.
01:17:02In terms of supporting the team.
01:17:07Venezuela have really been fortunate tonight.
01:17:11No other way to say it.
01:17:13Fortunate not to be further behind.
01:17:15But they're back on level terms.
01:17:20Who can guess what happens next?
01:17:26Miller might already have restored Canada's lead.
01:17:29David.
01:17:33Ostaquio.
01:17:35Jonathan David.
01:17:39Cannot hit the target regularly.
01:17:44Cannot hit the target at all tonight.
01:17:49But how about this from Solomon Rondon?
01:17:54Over Crepeau.
01:17:56He raced back in vain.
01:17:58And it dropped in under the crossbar to send Venezuela, the country, into ecstasy.
01:18:08But there's still a game to be won and lost.
01:18:11A quite memorable game.
01:18:35Ferraresi.
01:18:37Rondon got to it.
01:18:38Cadiz!
01:18:40Rondon.
01:18:58Might yet be Argentina-Venezuela in the semi-final.
01:19:06On we go.
01:19:07Crepeau launches it.
01:19:08Looking for Larine.
01:19:10Doesn't get it.
01:19:12Soteldo.
01:19:17Much more out of him second half since Batista pulled him to the right side.
01:19:25Bello.
01:19:27The thing about Bello, he doesn't really take Alistair Johnston on the whole time the way Soteldo is trying to do.
01:19:34Quite a thoughtful move that.
01:19:35So Bello's more happy just to get the ball and move it on.
01:19:40It seems to be a man who knows what he's doing.
01:19:53So Jesse Marsh's move is to make two changes here.
01:19:57We're going to see this again and again and again.
01:20:05Perhaps the greatest of all the great goals he's scored.
01:20:11Soteldo.
01:20:22Larine's going off.
01:20:28And also Kyle Larine, Tani Oluwaseyi and Ali Ahmed are introduced by Marsh.
01:20:36Oluwaseyi.
01:20:39Up front.
01:20:51Let's find out where Ahmed is asked to play.
01:20:57That's Oluwaseyi slotting in, in his natural role.
01:21:05One of the reasons for the question mark over where Ahmed will play is that he's hardly ever played for Canada.
01:21:13It's a big call by Marsh to bring him into this game.
01:21:16A sequence of appearances.
01:21:33Last summer, this time last year really, in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
01:21:37Don't think there were any 80,000 attendances during that.
01:22:0825 shots and counting.
01:22:15Cornelius is down.
01:22:38I think that may have been Tejon Buchanan actually.
01:22:45Can't be certain.
01:22:54This was Jonathan David setting up.
01:22:58Jacob Schaffer-Leberg for the opener for Canada.
01:23:08That was the salute for Buchanan.
01:23:13There he is, it is him.
01:23:15And it's great to see him smiling.
01:23:20Fighting hard to build his career in Italy, of course, with Inter.
01:23:24But first he's got to fight back from a broken leg.
01:23:37They assisted him in the group stage for the semifinals and finals of the 2024 Copa America.
01:23:49Thank you.
01:24:07I think everybody was glad of a breather for a moment or two.
01:24:34A reminder if it's level, no extra time.
01:24:37Straight to penalties.
01:24:41That's happened last night between Argentina and Ecuador.
01:24:55Cornelius.
01:24:57That was a decent one.
01:25:00Oh, and it was struck with power by Oluwaseyi.
01:25:07Roma worried for a little while on its journey.
01:25:38Just at the moment Venezuela do appear in the ascendant.
01:25:43But this Canada side is blessed with plenty of backbone.
01:25:49We've seen that not just in this tournament.
01:25:52They've got that very happy habit of just keep keeping on.
01:26:08Venezuela the team and Venezuela the supporters tonight here.
01:26:22Canada supporters watching everywhere will surely say we should be two goals, maybe more than that, maybe three goals clear.
01:26:32Just given the chances missed.
01:26:34Very clear-cut chances.
01:26:38Rondon.
01:26:41Cardiz.
01:26:48Korner.
01:26:49Korner.
01:27:05This isn't a football match. This is a national happening for Venezuela.
01:27:20They're loving being the centre of attention at this tournament.
01:27:24They don't want it to end.
01:27:27Here's Soteldo.
01:27:31Oluwaseyi did well.
01:27:33Helped on by Miller.
01:27:36Jonathan David can't break.
01:27:39Stopped by Davies.
01:27:41You can have all the fine tactical stuff you want.
01:27:44But what Solomon Rondon did to level this game up.
01:27:47You can't teach it.
01:27:49It was instinctive.
01:27:51And it was brilliant.
01:28:00Here's Rondon.
01:28:03Rondon.
01:28:05Rondon.
01:28:07Rondon.
01:28:09But Canada are right in the hunt still.
01:28:13Another good pass by Estaquio who's been very good all round tonight.
01:28:19Didn't reach Ali.
01:28:21But Canada have a throw.
01:28:35We have our answer actually.
01:28:37Ali Ahmed down the right in front of Johnston.
01:28:40Johnston looks for him here.
01:28:43And he used it well.
01:28:45Estaquio.
01:28:46David.
01:28:47Nicely done.
01:28:50Onto the top of the net.
01:28:52From Oluwaseyi.
01:28:53It will not drop for Canada.
01:28:54It will not go in for Canada.
01:29:01But it looks like it's been an effective change from Jesse Marsh.
01:29:05And so, so close.
01:29:10To putting Canada back in front.
01:29:17It's drifting and it's spinning but it will not drop.
01:29:31Now Jonathan Osorio is going off for Canada.
01:29:34And Ismael Kone comes on.
01:29:58Kone of Watford of course started against Argentina and against Peru.
01:30:04And he's got a chance.
01:30:22Adam Borel.
01:30:24Sotelo.
01:30:30David has it.
01:30:31Sotelo races back goal side.
01:30:33David to Miller.
01:30:34David's on the deck now.
01:30:35Canada keep going.
01:30:39Wasn't a great cross that time in all honesty.
01:30:42Belo.
01:30:46Herrera.
01:30:49Osorio.
01:30:52Ferrari is here.
01:30:55Over the top it goes.
01:30:56And Krepel.
01:30:59Got everything just right that time.
01:31:00Looking for Cadiz.
01:31:01Venezuela.
01:31:06Miller couldn't get it.
01:31:07It's Cadiz.
01:31:08Sotelo on the outside.
01:31:10Here come Venezuela again.
01:31:16Cadiz thought about it.
01:31:17Didn't hit it.
01:31:18Oh maybe now wishes he did.
01:31:21Maybe they all do as well.
01:31:32Navarro might have a bit of explaining to do about this.
01:31:53Sotelo withdrawn.
01:31:54So too Belo.
01:32:02Jefferson Savarino and Matias La Cava come on.
01:32:07We haven't seen much of La Cava through this tournament.
01:32:12And in all honesty haven't seen much of the other boys come on.
01:32:17But this is Batista all over.
01:32:22So he's a player who can do a job in the moment.
01:32:27Easy to be proven right again.
01:32:31To confirm it's actually La Cava's first ever competitive appearance for Venezuela.
01:32:58What a time and place.
01:33:01Cadiz with a great header.
01:33:08Solomon Rondon goes in again.
01:33:10And this time Crepo denies him.
01:33:15May have been offside.
01:33:24Was offside.
01:34:02Davies to Miller.
01:34:06No way through.
01:34:07Kone has it back for Canada.
01:34:10David.
01:34:15Ali Ahmed cuts in.
01:34:20Out as far as Kone.
01:34:23Nicely done to Johnston.
01:34:24Tipped over the top by Romo.
01:34:32We might well be heading in the direction of 30 goal attempts.
01:34:54Normally that's a fair indicator that we've had a thriller.
01:35:02Alphonso Davies takes the corner.
01:35:15Seemed to miss hit that really.
01:35:17Cadiz cleared it.
01:35:18Crepo's out there.
01:35:22Corner of his eye looking at Rondon the whole time.
01:35:24And we know why.
01:35:32Haak and Solon, everything else.
01:35:36Sotelo has given to the team throughout this tournament.
01:35:38But then again he's got a lot of teammates who do the same.
01:35:48On by Miller.
01:35:50Stapfield trying to get David in behind.
01:35:52Jonathan David has it.
01:35:55To the side, Ali Ahmed.
01:35:56Missed hit shot is wide.
01:36:01New faces, same old problem for Canada in this game.
01:36:07And there's not a lot of this game now to go.
01:36:16One goal and in all honesty.
01:36:20Hardly a handful of chances throughout the group.
01:36:23But a hatful of chances tonight.
01:36:26And only one further goal to show for it.
01:36:32That will be the final word on this Copa America campaign.
01:36:36If Canada go out.
01:36:40Not that they've got any intention of doing that.
01:36:42And here's Kone trying to prove it.
01:36:44And he's used it to Miller.
01:36:46And Canada have plenty of men forward.
01:36:48Miller rolls it to Kone again.
01:36:55More composure needed there for Canada.
01:37:02Kone.
01:37:03Kone.
01:37:04Kone.
01:37:05Kone.
01:37:06Kone.
01:37:07Kone.
01:37:08Kone.
01:37:09Kone.
01:37:10Kone.
01:37:11Kone.
01:37:12Kone.
01:37:13Kone.
01:37:14Kone.
01:37:15Kone.
01:37:16Kone.
01:37:17Kone.
01:37:18Kone.
01:37:19Kone.
01:37:20Kone.
01:37:21Kone.
01:37:22Kone.
01:37:23Kone.
01:37:24Kone.
01:37:25Kone.
01:37:26Kone.
01:37:27Kone.
01:37:28Kone.
01:37:30Kone.
01:37:31Kone.
01:37:32Kone.
01:37:34Soaked up so much pressure in this second half.
01:37:37But as we head to the final few minutes, it looks like Canada are digging deep.
01:37:48They get the free kick.
01:37:50They get the free-kick.
01:37:58Been a great referee and performance so far tonight from Winston-Sampoel.
01:38:16Cornelius forward misplaced.
01:38:21Cadiz.
01:38:26Whatever the outcome of this game, there's going to be a lot of the other South American countries who have just pushed Venezuela right up their watch list.
01:38:36Ahead of the important games in qualifying for the next FIFA World Cup.
01:38:42They're right in the hunt early on, nine points on the board already in fourth after the first six games.
01:38:47But nobody will relish playing this team over the next year.
01:38:55Aramburu, a pushover no more of Venezuela.
01:39:06There's only four minutes for somebody to become the hero before the shootout.
01:39:13Cadiz took it well, options both ways.
01:39:18A cover.
01:39:20Johnston.
01:39:23Don't think he's put a foot wrong tonight, the Celtic right back.
01:39:36Now this is stretching the script writer's creative powers.
01:39:49Rondon has scored one of his greatest goals and they're bringing on Thomas Rincón for the conclusion.
01:39:55Martinez and Osorio off, Wilka Angel is the other player coming on.
01:40:00Rincón and Rondon between them have carried Venezuela on their shoulders over the last decade.
01:40:15Rincón 36 to Rondon's 34 years old.
01:40:30Taken down well by Davies.
01:40:43Liam Miller.
01:40:45Taken off him fair and square.
01:40:59Rincón.
01:41:19Rincón.
01:41:20Rondon.
01:41:27Eustaquio to Miller.
01:41:30Chance after chance, carved out all night long by Canada.
01:41:34Have they got time to create one more?
01:41:40Possibly.
01:41:51Not like that, I don't think.
01:41:54Eventually Alfonso Davies moved it on and Miller on the move.
01:41:57Away from Aramburu, they're going to get a free kick.
01:41:59Yellow card coming for Aramburu.
01:42:05A place in the Copa America semi-final rests on this free kick.
01:42:21Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please.
01:42:23Yellow card caution for Venezuela's number four, Jan Aramburu.
01:42:37Steven Eustaquio has to get this right.
01:42:45Marshken Hardy, bear to watch it.
01:42:47He's made his changes.
01:42:50Still right in it, right to the finish Canada.
01:42:52They've come on strong actually in the last ten minutes or so.
01:42:58Can they go and win it now?
01:43:00Not like that.
01:43:02We're over the four minutes.
01:43:04Rincón.
01:43:10Full time.
01:43:13A Copa America classic for sure.
01:43:16And it all ends 1-1.
01:43:18And we're going to head into a penalty shootout.
01:43:21A game that will live long in the memory.
01:43:29The great thing for both teams I think is that they can take so much from the level they have performed at in this game.
01:43:39More nights like this surely coming the way of Venezuela as well as Canada.
01:43:44In under two years from now at the next FIFA World Cup.
01:43:49Who's going to be progressing by this penalty shootout to the Copa America semi-final?
01:44:13One can't bear to watch very often, but nobody's going to miss it either.
01:44:43The leadoff man is Solomon Rondon.
01:45:14Rondon sends Crepo the wrong way.
01:45:24I suppose there is an outside chance that might be his last ever touch in a Copa America game.
01:45:31I hope not. I hope I'm wrong.
01:45:33I hope with all my heart I'm wrong.
01:45:35But if it is, that's a pretty good way to go out.
01:45:39And a very good night to go out on, given the goal he got earlier.
01:45:43But let's see if Jonathan David can reply for Canada immediately.
01:45:59David against Romo.
01:46:04Just as good really.
01:46:05The two top guns, the leadoff men and both have scored.
01:46:10Angel Herrera. A great season in La Liga.
01:46:41Can he do it for his country now? He's missed it.
01:46:53Still a long way to go.
01:46:57But Canada can get their nose in front now.
01:47:10Liam Miller, late substitute.
01:47:27He replies by missing his. He missed it by a long way. It's still 1-1.
01:47:40So Rondon has scored.
01:47:58And now for somebody who matches Rondon in the affection of his countrymen.
01:48:06Thomas Rincón. Look at that for a face.
01:48:11Rincón smashes it home.
01:48:17No frills there.
01:48:31Venezuela in front.
01:48:35Moise Bombito.
01:49:05He's had to wait a little bit.
01:49:21We're still waiting. Bombito.
01:49:27All square again.
01:49:32Rather cool, wasn't he?
01:49:35Imperturbable.
01:49:45So Romo on his way to the right.
01:49:47Savarino. I'm not certain that Savarino actually touched the ball more than a time or two in his late cameo off the bench.
01:50:08Jefferson Savarino. It's kept out. Crepo to the post and out. Savarino couldn't convert it.
01:50:25Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please. Please do not use the lasers in the AT&T Stadium.
01:50:36Crepo gets the credit.
01:50:37I thought he'd been superb tonight. Now is the chance to edge Canada in front.
01:51:08No. What a poor penalty to Ma. Everything he's done all night long.
01:51:20Absolutely straightforward save for Romo. A present.
01:51:27Gratefully received by the nation of Venezuela.
01:51:38It's still 2-2.
01:51:46So essentially, now we're down to sudden death.
01:51:52If John de Cazis can score for Venezuela, then Canada must score their last penalty.
01:52:08Cadiz. Short little run up. A few dancing steps. He's jumping inside alright.
01:52:17Cadiz edges Venezuela back in front. Canada must score this kick.
01:52:38It's not the first big penalty in the career of Alphonso Davies. Not by a long way.
01:52:57But has he ever had one as the captain of his country quite like this?
01:53:00Davies. Oh brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. 3-3.
01:53:23What was all the fuss about?
01:53:31Angel. An even later substitute for Venezuela.
01:53:50Angel. No. Another poor kick.
01:53:53Poor kick.
01:53:58Easy, easy pickings for Crepo. Canada the team that missed all the chances during the match.
01:54:05Venezuela are having their chances in the shootout and they're not taking them.
01:54:18Cool hand Crepo. Goes about his business.
01:54:23Oh Canada now in business with Ismael Kone.
01:54:30This is to win it and break the hearts of millions of Venezuelans worldwide right now.
01:54:37Kone sends Canada into the Copa America semi-final.
01:54:52A Copa America classic ends in heartbreak. Agony for Venezuela but what a moment this is for Canada.
01:55:07They missed so many chances all through the game.
01:55:12Venezuela seemed to have their number in the shootout but they let it from their grasp.
01:55:18And Canada at the last took the chance to go forward.
01:55:23A first ever Copa America semi-final.
01:55:27What a start to the coaching career of Jesse Marsh with Canada.
01:55:33He's only been in the job a month.
01:55:36The players have done him proud.
01:55:38They played brilliantly in the first half.
01:55:41Should have been further in front.
01:55:43Schaffelberg got a goal.
01:55:45Other chances aplenty came and went.
01:55:48Venezuela came on strong.
01:55:51Solomon Rondon scored one of the all time great goals.
01:55:55But Venezuela could not see it through.
01:55:58And a brilliant tournament for them with three group wins.
01:56:02Matching Argentina and Uruguay comes to a painful end in a quarter-final that was honestly unforgettably good.
01:56:14Football at its finest.
01:56:16It's so very sad there has to be a loser.
01:56:19But Canada sees their moment in the end.
01:56:23And it's only the beginning perhaps of a great new era for Canadian football this.
01:56:29We might say the same about Venezuela because their young players aren't going anywhere.
01:56:35But the glory they craved.
01:56:37A run all the way to the final for the first time in their history seemed a possibility after their great showing in the group phase.
01:56:46But Kone put all that to bed.
01:56:50And at the end of the night Canada are still in the Copa America.
01:56:56It was a game I feel privileged to have watched.
01:56:59Thank you very much everybody for sharing it with us.
01:57:02I hope you'll feel it was worth staying up very late back at home.
01:57:05They're not the top two teams in the world but they just played at their absolute top level tonight.
01:57:12What a night of entertainment.
01:57:15And once more I say there has to be a loser and it's rather sad that it's his team.
01:57:22Hopefully their players will get over it.
01:57:25But it won't be tonight will it?
01:57:28Thanks everybody for watching.
01:57:30Venezuela go out of the Copa America.
01:57:33And Canada will meet Argentina in the first of the semi-finals.
01:57:38Winners on penalties.
01:57:40On a night never to be forgotten here.
01:57:44In the AT&T Stadium in Texas.
