Australia vs Wales 2024/07/06
Transcript
00:00:00As we look at the Wales change, a rematch change squad from the one that toppled Australia at the World Cup.
00:00:05Six new faces in the starting 15, Dalwey Lake the captain, Chris Chinza's back alongside David Jenkins in the second row.
00:00:12Turnover, Tommy Refle back on the open side, a number eight, Aaron Wainwright wins a 50th Test cap for Wales today.
00:00:20So a proud moment for him, but what's going through the minds of these players here ahead of this Test match in Sydney.
00:00:28Liam Williams you see there in shot, giving a hug to young Archie Griffin there who's on the tight head side for Wales this evening.
00:00:40Just his second Test match, he came off the bench against England and was injured his knee in that game earlier in the year.
00:00:48But he's back and they have got some issues in the front row and at hooker.
00:00:53And in terms of the back line for Wales, well Ben Thomas, big day for him.
00:00:58His first game in that famous number 10 shirt for Wales, Josh Hathaway debutant as well.
00:01:03What about Australia? Well, James Slipper, 135th Test for the loose head prop, surpassing Wales.
00:01:09Geoff Jenkins is the most capped prop of all time.
00:01:12Taniella Tupo on the tight head. Jeremy Williams, the Western Force captain.
00:01:16He gets a start on debut and number eight, Rob Balotini, one of just three Wallabies remaining who face Wales at Lyon.
00:01:23At the World Cup in their starting 15. New Wallaby captain, Liam Wright, their seventh skipper in the last 12 months.
00:01:29It's his first Test start. Jake Gordon alongside Noah Lolicio.
00:01:34Lolicio overlooked by Eddie Jones at the World Cup.
00:01:37He's back in the 10 shirt for Australia.
00:01:39Look out for 22 year old Josh Fluke in the centre as a Test debut for him.
00:01:43Tom Wright, the fullback, also missed selection for the World Cup last year.
00:01:47He's been brought back by Joe Schmidt.
00:01:48He's alongside Andrew Kelleway and Filippo D'Angunu.
00:01:51And Tom Liner, as mentioned, on the bench, ready to make his debut for Australia.
00:01:58And Charlie Cale, look out for him.
00:02:00When he gets a chance, the Brumbies loose forward has been a real standout in Super Rugby Pacific this season.
00:02:08So both these nations, historically proud rugby nations, of course,
00:02:12with a lot to salvage tonight and plenty to prove for the future.
00:02:18Pressure to perform all round.
00:02:20How long is too long before Warren Gatlin and Wales end this seven game losing run?
00:02:26They play a Test match in Australia for the first time in 12 years.
00:02:29And it looks like it's a tap on the backside from Dowey Lake for Aaron Wainwright,
00:02:33who will lead Wales out this evening on the occasion of his 50th Test match.
00:02:39Not a lot of time together for this Australian team.
00:02:41Just a couple of weeks in camp since the Super Rugby Pacific season ended.
00:02:46Wales, of course, had the benefit of that run out at Twickenham against South Africa a couple of weeks ago
00:02:51and a full Six Nations campaign as well to prepare for this summer tour of Australia.
00:02:58A few Wales fans in the house at Allianz Stadium.
00:03:03Hasn't been a happy hunting ground for the Wallabies.
00:03:06They haven't won here in a decade on this ground, Australia.
00:03:11So Sydney's not been the place where they've been picking up results.
00:03:14It has been, of course, a very difficult time off the field in Australian rugby and on it.
00:03:20And there's a story of the week.
00:03:21Michael Hooper, who this week announced his retirement.
00:03:25He missed out on selection for the Aussie Sevens at the Olympics later this month.
00:03:31But he will carry the match ball out onto Allianz Stadium this evening.
00:03:35Incredible career.
00:03:37Sam Warburton has joined me on commentary.
00:03:40Sam, a word on Michael Hooper, a player you came up against many times.
00:03:45A couple of great games against Michael Hooper himself and Pokrov.
00:03:48I found when they played in tandem together, going back towards that 2015 World Cup,
00:03:53they got to the final in that World Cup.
00:03:54That was a phenomenal pairing.
00:03:56Two of the best open type flankers to have played the game in the last few decades.
00:04:01And I'm glad he's getting this reception.
00:04:04The Waratahs in Sydney are a hugely popular figure in Australia.
00:04:08One of the all-time Australian greats, for sure.
00:04:11Yeah, he was Wallaby captain aged 22.
00:04:13125 tests all up.
00:04:1569 of those as captain.
00:04:18The Wallabies and Wales out onto a slightly damp Allianz Stadium.
00:04:22The rain's eased off.
00:04:23There's been plenty of rough weather around the Sydney area this week.
00:04:26Perhaps not the sunny trip down south the Welsh players would have been hoping for on this trip.
00:04:33But the two captains, Dowie Lake, just his fifth test in charge as captain of this Wales team.
00:04:38And Liam Wright, the Australian captain.
00:04:41There's Fraser McWright, his Reds teammate, who will play on the open side for the Wallabies this evening.
00:04:50Before the national anthem, we will pause for the welcome to country.
00:05:03Good evening.
00:05:10Ladies and gentlemen, families, players, our overseas visitors.
00:05:17In open remarks in the local Aboriginal language this area, I said, I'm Lloyd Walker.
00:05:23I'm speaking to you in Daryl.
00:05:25We're on Gadigal land.
00:05:28On behalf of the Library's Aboriginal community, our people, our organisations, I'd like to welcome you all here tonight.
00:05:38I'd like to pay my respects to elders past and present.
00:05:43Our people have been here since time began.
00:05:48Our community used to move between coastal Sydney and the Illawarra with notable identities of the 1800s, Billy Wentworth and Torres Tamara.
00:06:00Our people would hunt, gather, look after the land and the waterways.
00:06:05Until the formation of the New South Wales Protection Board in 1883, where all coastal Sydney Aboriginals were relocated to La Perouse.
00:06:16To be out of sight and out of mind of the colony.
00:06:20141 years later, and Sydney growing around us, we strive to stay on our traditional lands for the next 141 years and beyond.
00:06:30This area has significant cultural and spiritual connections to my people.
00:06:36Our people would gather at Jitindal Park marshlands with other clans for events such as payback, corroborees and control battles.
00:06:49So once again, a warm welcome.
00:06:53Being a former Wallaby, I'm looking forward to the game tonight.
00:06:57Another battle.
00:07:00Nundawabi, go the Wallabies.
00:07:06The National Anthem of Wales, performed by the Cantorian Male Voice Choir.
00:07:17Now time for the National Anthems.
00:07:19Land of My Fathers, performed by the Sydney Welsh Cantorian Choir.
00:07:23After that, the Dance Australia Fair.
00:07:37I hail from the mountains of Sydney
00:07:46From my home and from your fields of yonder green
00:07:55I go so proud and free
00:08:00God guard this land of mine
00:08:05North, south, east, west, south
00:08:10I fly so proud and free
00:08:21God guard this land of mine
00:08:27North, south, east, west, south
00:08:38I fly so proud and free
00:09:08Australia, Australia
00:09:24Oh, we are young and free
00:09:28In golden soil and sweltering fire
00:09:33Our home is girt by sea
00:09:37Our land abounds in pages
00:09:42Of beauty rich and rare
00:09:47In history's pages
00:09:51Our hearts Australia fair
00:09:56In joyful strains
00:09:59Our hearts Australia fair
00:10:29Our hearts Australia fair
00:10:39Our hearts Australia fair
00:10:49Our hearts Australia fair
00:10:57Head-to-head coaches in the Six Nations.
00:10:59But who will find the way through this evening here at Allianz Stadium?
00:11:07The Frenchman, 35-year-old Frenchman, Pierre Brusset.
00:11:10He's your referee for this one.
00:11:13It's his first Tier 1 Test match in charge.
00:11:16He's assisted by New Zealand's Ben O'Keefe and James Dolman.
00:11:19The television match official is Marius Jonka from South Africa.
00:11:24Feels tense just ahead of this one, Sam.
00:11:34It does, it does.
00:11:36It's interesting what you're saying about Liam Wright.
00:11:38I think people are surprised when you get an inexperienced player at international level as captain.
00:11:42But I think what you want from your captain is to drive new behaviours, new mindset.
00:11:47Look, there's really experienced guys in that wall of his team.
00:11:49Tom Wright at 15, Valentini at number 8, Tupou, a hooker who will help with the decision-making.
00:11:54But let's see what he's got to show this Australian squad.
00:11:57In that famous Wales number 10 jersey, Ben Thomas gets us underway in Sydney.
00:12:03Game one of a two-test series, will it be a Wallaby or Welsh revival?
00:12:11Australia bring it down safely off the kick-off.
00:12:15Jake Gordon, who was prevented from moving to Perpignan in France,
00:12:20held to his Australian contract with the first kick of the match.
00:12:24And it's a good one, he finds touch-up near halfway.
00:12:28Interesting, that'll be the first shot for Wales from an attacking perspective.
00:12:31Will they want to attack or will they want to play more field position?
00:12:34Opening line-up for Wales, well brought down by Duffer Jenkins.
00:12:38And there's Mason Grady giving it to Aaron Wainwright.
00:12:41His 50th cap for Wales in Sydney this evening.
00:12:45Ben Thomas, his first touch with the ball in hand,
00:12:48and gives it to Josh Hathaway, the debutant on the right wing.
00:12:53Born and bred in Aberystwyth, of course now with Gloucester in the English Premiership.
00:12:57Thomas is going to kick it high for Wales.
00:13:02And it's been well brought down by the Wallabies.
00:13:07Lolicio there is going to play Scrum Hart, but will come back for the original decision.
00:13:15No-arms tackle is the call.
00:13:18There's that cross-field kick that we saw at the top of the show,
00:13:21Dan Bigger and Jamie Roberts talk about.
00:13:22It was nice from Ben Thomas.
00:13:23They tested the Australian defence for two or three phases.
00:13:26Ben Thomas was nicely attached to his forwards,
00:13:28and then he went for the cross-field kick,
00:13:30which is a really hard kick to defend from an Australian perspective.
00:13:33You don't have as much protection from your players to protect the catcher.
00:13:37So Wales playing the territory game in that middle third,
00:13:40which is really important.
00:13:41Nice composure from Ben Thomas,
00:13:43and he's going to have a gutsy go at the three points.
00:13:46Really important, I find, in these test matches.
00:13:48Yes, it's a friendly, and people want performances,
00:13:51but I always agree and think you've got to chase the three points,
00:13:55the six points that are on offer early on, because it's about winning.
00:13:59It's a good Australian you win.
00:14:00It does set a really good marker for this group moving forward,
00:14:03and I like the decision to go for the points.
00:14:06It's been 55 years, Sam, since Australia have lost to Wales in Australia.
00:14:11Here's another look at the incident which led to the penalty.
00:14:13There's a no-arm tackle from James Slipper there.
00:14:15You can see he's just going straight to the deck on Derry Lake.
00:14:18But here is Ben Thomas.
00:14:20He's the sixth different starting fly half
00:14:24in this second edition of the Warren Gatland era.
00:14:30Difficult kick.
00:14:34But he's hit it really nicely,
00:14:36as Ben Thomas straight down the middle.
00:14:40What a start from the man from Cardiff.
00:14:46Wales lead Australia 3-0.
00:14:49Excellent start.
00:14:50I think some people at home probably don't realise
00:14:52how little rugby this last season Ben Thomas has played at ten.
00:14:55Cardiff Rugby have played him at 12, occasionally at 15,
00:14:58but he's such a nice attacking player.
00:15:00He would have sharpened his defensive skills playing at 12,
00:15:02so stepping in at 10, it might give him a bit of an edge there.
00:15:05But it's a great start,
00:15:06great opening three minutes for Ben Thomas at ten.
00:15:08Really good awareness from the captain, Delwey Lake,
00:15:10off the restart there.
00:15:12Difficult kick from Lolicio.
00:15:14Brought it down well.
00:15:15There's Archie Griffin, the tight head.
00:15:18Just his third game of pro rugby.
00:15:21Starting for the first time in a Test match for Wales.
00:15:25Now Ellis Bevan, another Cardiff man.
00:15:28This 9-10-12 Cardiff combination for Wales here.
00:15:33Well brought down for Australia.
00:15:35Out the back from Jeremy Williams.
00:15:40And Australia set up another breakdown.
00:15:42Jake Gordon looking for more ball runners
00:15:44coming round the corner.
00:15:46It was Lucan Salakai-Lotto,
00:15:48familiar player to the UK audience of Northampton for a season.
00:15:56Gordon kicks high again.
00:15:58It's gone forward off a Welsh hand,
00:16:00so Australia now can play with the ball in hand.
00:16:03But Lolicio is going to kick again.
00:16:05Low trajectory, looking for the 50-22.
00:16:07I'm not sure it'll have the legs just quite.
00:16:10Rio Dias back there for Wales.
00:16:12In fact, it's Ben Thomas alongside Dyer
00:16:15who does really well on the floor.
00:16:17And now they can resource that breakdown
00:16:19and Wainwright will carry it forward.
00:16:22The Australian out.
00:16:25In from the side is the decision.
00:16:30It's interesting to see what style Australia are going to play.
00:16:33Both teams being pretty similar.
00:16:35They're having an attempt for one or two fades in their own half,
00:16:38but then they're playing for territory and kick-ins.
00:16:40When we talk about that middle third,
00:16:42it's almost between the ten-metre lines,
00:16:44what the teams decide to do.
00:16:45Australia, typical of a Joe Schmidt team,
00:16:47perhaps a little bit more pragmatic than they might have been in the past.
00:16:50Time is on to go.
00:16:51This is the offence here.
00:16:53Wales will go straight to ground.
00:16:55I think it's the player there.
00:16:56Ref will come to the side.
00:16:57Valentini putting pressure on the ball.
00:16:59It's a good kick chase from Australia.
00:17:00Put the ball deep.
00:17:01Good competition at the breakdown.
00:17:02Liam Wright, this new captain for the Wallabies,
00:17:06brings down the long throw.
00:17:08Matt Feslett has it there in the number two shirt.
00:17:12Gives it back to Gordon.
00:17:14Out the back from Paisani.
00:17:15Lolicio, quick hands.
00:17:17Hathaway coming in off his right wing.
00:17:19Advantage Australia.
00:17:22No clear release.
00:17:26Australia have a penalty right in front of the post.
00:17:28It'll be interesting to see what they do here.
00:17:30Remember that match in Lyon at the World Cup?
00:17:32They gave up a lot of opportunities to kick at posts,
00:17:34and it hurt them that night.
00:17:36Liam Wright just walked straight over and pointed to the three.
00:17:39I know some people would like to see perhaps take a scrum or a tap-and-go
00:17:42or go for the corner,
00:17:44but I like how seriously Australia are taking this.
00:17:46Hathaway comes in, tries to shut off that final pass.
00:17:48Liam Williams comes in, takes man on ball, which is good.
00:17:51He gets back up and he comes through the gate.
00:17:53But that hand, that right hand there, which goes on the floor,
00:17:55and left hand, that's what the referee doesn't like.
00:17:57Not deemed to be supporting his body weight.
00:17:59You can put your hands on the floor if you're supporting your body weight,
00:18:02but it was deemed he wasn't supporting his body weight,
00:18:04and he didn't release.
00:18:05Liam Williams competes very well at breakdown,
00:18:07but didn't get away with it that time.
00:18:09Noah Lolicio, who was a medical joker for too long
00:18:13during the Rugby World Cup last year after Eddie Jones
00:18:16omitted him from selection.
00:18:19But a straightforward penalty for him,
00:18:22and we are level six and a half minutes through.
00:18:27I think that's what we want to see as a team,
00:18:29is when you get in the opposition 22,
00:18:30when you walk back empty-handed, it's quite deflating.
00:18:33To walk away with three points is good.
00:18:35On average, if a team can get three to four points
00:18:38on every entry in the opposition 22,
00:18:40you're in a good place.
00:18:42So actually, a three-point return is not bad.
00:18:44If Australia felt they had really good dominance at scrum time,
00:18:47they might have chosen to stay in,
00:18:48but probably a bit too early in the game to make those calls.
00:18:51Australia averages two and a half tries per game in 2023.
00:18:56That was one of their big issues.
00:18:57They just couldn't score many tries.
00:18:59They have their first points here of this match.
00:19:03Three-all.
00:19:04Both teams, you get the feeling at the moment,
00:19:06just working their way into this contest.
00:19:09Gordon's going to play it safe again and kick off the pace.
00:19:12It's another excellent kick from Jake Gordon,
00:19:15the Waratahs' captain.
00:19:16I mentioned at the top, he wanted to go to Perpignan and Kouranty.
00:19:19He had a contract in place.
00:19:20Australian Roby says,
00:19:21no, we're going to hold you to your contract until the end of 2025.
00:19:26Quite refreshing to hear that, actually, isn't it?
00:19:28You're right.
00:19:29It's an interesting battle.
00:19:30Jake Gordon, 31 and 20 caps for his earliest bet
00:19:33and 24 in his second cap.
00:19:35How the halfbacks marshal their team,
00:19:37not perhaps overplaying in their own half.
00:19:40It'll be really important to see how that plays out today.
00:19:42Tame Plumtree with good line-out ball for Wales.
00:19:45Hit hard was Owen Watkin,
00:19:47but he got the ball away really nicely to Wainwright.
00:19:51That flat pass from Thomas just a bit too flat
00:19:57for Rio Diago straight over the sideline.
00:20:01I think Thomas was expecting Rio Diago to be a little bit flatter.
00:20:10Liam Williams knew the ball was going to go across him,
00:20:12just didn't quite get the right of the stand in there.
00:20:14Salakaya Lotta with the line-out,
00:20:15big hit from Watkin in the midfield,
00:20:17but here comes Andrew Kelleway and opens up.
00:20:19Now Tom Wright, the fullback for the Wallabies.
00:20:21Good attacking opportunity.
00:20:25Inside ball to Valentini, the number eight.
00:20:29Gordon's there. Salakaya Lotta.
00:20:33Advantage Australia again.
00:20:35They're racking up these penalties against Wales.
00:20:37Lollaseo, chip over the top.
00:20:39It's been well taken by Jeremy Williams,
00:20:43the debutant for Australia.
00:20:52Another good opportunity for the Wallabies here.
00:20:55James Slipper now puts the head down.
00:20:58Gordon.
00:21:00Little chip through from Lollaseo.
00:21:03Liam Williams is there, but the advantage was coming,
00:21:08or they're saying no, advantage was played there,
00:21:13so they'll go back to the original penalty offside,
00:21:15right on the 22.
00:21:18There's no coincidence.
00:21:19Wales come offside off the back of a line break.
00:21:21Joe Schmidt is one of the most tactically astute coaches
00:21:24that you'll see out there,
00:21:25and I think they're challenging this 12-13 channel.
00:21:28Jamie picked up on it at the start.
00:21:30Mason Grady bites in.
00:21:31Owen Watkin, one position outside him, he bites in also,
00:21:34and they find that space in that 13 channel.
00:21:36I think Joe Schmidt and their attack coaches
00:21:39would have manufactured starter plays
00:21:41to challenge Mason Grady and Owen Watkin.
00:21:43Jamie Roberts picked on it in analysis
00:21:45when it was Wales playing South Africa.
00:21:47There was a couple of mistakes they would have seen
00:21:49from that game, and if you're looking where Wales
00:21:51might be inexperienced, it's probably going to be
00:21:53that combination.
00:21:54They're going to want to challenge that area
00:21:56on first phase offset piece, and they've got their line break.
00:21:59Once you get in behind, Wales are then scrambling.
00:22:01So it's good for Australia.
00:22:03They get the line break, they keep the pressure on,
00:22:05they kick the ball away because they knew they had advantage.
00:22:08But good starter plays from Australia so far.
00:22:10Rob Bellassini getting some attention there.
00:22:13The only player to play all nine Test matches
00:22:15for Australia last year.
00:22:18He's back on his feet, and a chance for Noah Lollasea
00:22:21to kick his second penalty of the evening.
00:22:24Lollasea has missed that one right from a very kickable spot.
00:22:36So that is three points given up.
00:22:40Well, the 24-year-old Noah Lollasea,
00:22:43Joe Schmidt watching on there.
00:22:45He mentioned detail.
00:22:46Sam, that's what he's known for, isn't he?
00:22:48Does not miss a beat, this guy.
00:22:50I mean, he's only been with this squad two weeks,
00:22:52but you can be absolutely sure he would have been doing his homework.
00:22:55When he did his interview with Lauren Jenkins,
00:22:57he comes across so well.
00:22:58I've met him many a times.
00:22:59I remember saying to one of the Irish lads,
00:23:01Joe Schmidt's a lovely guy, isn't he?
00:23:02They went, he's a ruthless operator.
00:23:04So he's lovely in front of the camera,
00:23:06but he makes sure his team delivers what he wants.
00:23:08And that's why I talk about being tactically astute.
00:23:10He leaves no stone uncovered.
00:23:12Loves detail.
00:23:13Philippe D'Angunou there with the carry.
00:23:16Chip over the top this time from Australia.
00:23:18It's worked out for them.
00:23:19Salakai Lotte.
00:23:22Has done really well.
00:23:24Said during the week how much of an inspiration
00:23:26Courtney Laws was for him during his time at Northampton,
00:23:29but that's ended up in Wales' possession.
00:23:32So good off the chip over the top from Australia,
00:23:34but then just coming up with the error.
00:23:37I'll tell you what, it looks like an unforced error, that.
00:23:39I loved the tenacity of Dab Jenkins.
00:23:41Just gets a number five in the red shirt there.
00:23:43Just gets a tap on the head from Chris Shunzer.
00:23:45Despite the line-breaker, they get in behind.
00:23:48It's a nice attacking kick option from Australia.
00:23:51From this next phase, Dab Jenkins falls into position.
00:23:53You see him blackhead gun.
00:23:54He rushes off the line.
00:23:56And Lolicio just takes his eye off the ball
00:23:57because he can see this giant of a man in a red shirt
00:24:00flying after him.
00:24:01I love that from your players in the second row.
00:24:03You need to have players who are physically aggressive
00:24:06come off the line.
00:24:07It looks like an unforced error,
00:24:08but I think that's great defence of Dab Jenkins.
00:24:13Well, here we go.
00:24:14It is scrum time.
00:24:16You go left, we go left.
00:24:17Yes, sir.
00:24:18Thank you.
00:24:19It's a big moment this, you'd think,
00:24:20for a Wales type to have trouble.
00:24:22Archie Griffin, just his second cap.
00:24:24James Slipper, the Australian loosehead,
00:24:26has more test caps than the entire Welsh front five.
00:24:34Really interesting battle just on our side here.
00:24:36You see Archie Griffin for Wales in red,
00:24:38James Slipper in gold.
00:24:42136 caps, first two caps.
00:24:46Go!
00:24:47Ellis Bevan feeds it.
00:24:48Power comes on from the Wallabies,
00:24:50and they get the penalty.
00:24:52That's exactly the start they were looking for up front.
00:24:57The Wallabies, not a team known
00:24:59for their scrummaging dominance in history,
00:25:03but Tane-Ola Tupo there and James Slipper
00:25:06are feeling the good energy.
00:25:08There's some power there, Rupert,
00:25:09in that tight end with Tupo.
00:25:11When that ball comes in,
00:25:12Australia want to snap and go forward.
00:25:14It doesn't really matter what you're doing
00:25:16from Wales' perspective.
00:25:17If you're that dominant, when the ball comes in,
00:25:19you'll have your flanker calling.
00:25:21As soon as that ball comes in,
00:25:22you want all eight in perfect synchrony
00:25:24just to drop their hips and power through.
00:25:26Australia's timing when Wales' ball came in,
00:25:28Wales just couldn't cope with that weight
00:25:30and pressure coming through.
00:25:31Yes, the Plauders will go with Tupo,
00:25:33but it's an eight-man job, that scrum.
00:25:35If you're getting all that weight
00:25:36behind a powerful man like that
00:25:37and you're going forward,
00:25:38you're not giving much other option for the referee
00:25:40but to give a penalty for Australia.
00:25:42A very powerful start for Australia.
00:25:45Nicknamed the Tongan Thor, of course.
00:25:47He picked up that nickname
00:25:48when he went viral as an 18-year-old
00:25:50in Auckland high school rugby.
00:25:55Lollasea missed his previous attempt.
00:25:57This one, just right of centre.
00:26:00He's composed himself
00:26:01and he's hit that really well
00:26:02after the previous miss.
00:26:04The Wallabies take the lead
00:26:05after the scrum penalty.
00:26:076-3, 14 minutes in.
00:26:11You can see the style
00:26:12that Australia are playing now.
00:26:13They're playing field position
00:26:15with smart attacking plays
00:26:16with smart kicks.
00:26:17And once they get that,
00:26:18they're looking for physical dominance
00:26:20to get penalties,
00:26:21which they're taking three points
00:26:22at every occasion
00:26:23just to build that score.
00:26:24Very Joe Schmidt-esque.
00:26:27Zamgunu fields the restart
00:26:29of his left wing.
00:26:30He's been playing in the centre
00:26:31for the Rebels in Super Rugby Pacific
00:26:33this season more often than not.
00:26:35Used on the wing by Joe Schmidt tonight.
00:26:37Just re-signed with Australian Rugby.
00:26:40Of course, in the background of this,
00:26:41the Rebels Super Rugby franchise
00:26:43has been wound up.
00:26:44They'll be going to four franchises
00:26:46in Super Rugby Pacific next season,
00:26:48so some of these Rebels players
00:26:49are looking for new gigs.
00:26:54Well brought down by Lollasea.
00:26:55Gordon is going to work
00:26:57the narrow channels on the far side
00:26:59to Tupac.
00:27:00Another penalty there.
00:27:02Advantage coming Australia's way.
00:27:05Hunter Paisani does the kicking this time,
00:27:07trying to get over the head of Ben Thomas,
00:27:08but he's well positioned.
00:27:09They'll go back.
00:27:16It's not for the first time
00:27:17in this match, Sam.
00:27:19Walsh getting pinged for being offside.
00:27:21We're seeing there that those penalty counts
00:27:23are hurting so much.
00:27:24It's easier said than done.
00:27:26You say, well, reduce the penalties,
00:27:27but a lot of the penalties have come from
00:27:29there's been scrum dominance penalties,
00:27:31there's been penalties at ruck time,
00:27:33and you feel it's because if Australia
00:27:35are on top slightly physically,
00:27:37which I think they are at the moment,
00:27:38this opening 15 minutes,
00:27:39they're physically on top of the game.
00:27:42That's when you get caught offside
00:27:44or you're trying to chase the ball
00:27:45too much at breakdown to slow it down.
00:27:47If you don't win that physical battle,
00:27:49it can become a downward cascade,
00:27:52and that is the international game.
00:27:53Not many teams win when they're
00:27:55physically not the superior side.
00:27:58It's a reasonable carry.
00:27:59Dan Jenkins is slow to roll away.
00:28:01If that's a dominant hit,
00:28:03you don't get caught on the wrong side.
00:28:05I think that's the issue at the minute.
00:28:06We have five in a row
00:28:07against Wales penalty season.
00:28:08They're actually very well disciplined
00:28:10in the Six Nations Wales.
00:28:12They were the second most disciplined team,
00:28:14just eight penalties a game on average.
00:28:17They did, however, concede 15
00:28:18against South Africa at Twickenham
00:28:19a couple of weeks ago.
00:28:21Gordon.
00:28:22Paisani down Gunu off his left wing.
00:28:25Good quick ball for Australia, his slipper.
00:28:29Taking over Gethin Jenkins
00:28:30is the most capped prop of all time
00:28:32in Test rugby history.
00:28:33Matt Fesler.
00:28:35Queensland Red into contact.
00:28:41Inefficient from Gordon at Scrum Half so far,
00:28:44but they've had plenty of ball,
00:28:45plenty of phases.
00:28:46He's going to change direction here
00:28:48and give it to Jeremy Williams.
00:28:49He was the real surprise selection for Australia.
00:28:52Not many picks him to get the starting
00:28:54second row shirt, the Western Force skipper.
00:28:57And Fraser McWright here,
00:28:58his battle against the Welsh loose forward trio
00:29:02will be well worth keeping an eye on.
00:29:04Chris Chinza going in there for the tackle
00:29:06and Liam Wright there with the carry.
00:29:09The captain, a sneaky inside ball from Gordon,
00:29:12but it was too hot to handle.
00:29:14But Tom Wright and the ball's gone forward
00:29:16and then the penalty.
00:29:18Well, you had a really good competition
00:29:20from Chris Chinza.
00:29:21You know, Australia were getting good,
00:29:23go forward again, physically dominating.
00:29:24Chinza slows down one ruck
00:29:26and then that allows Wales to get into a bit
00:29:29better defensive position
00:29:31and Plumtree comes up with a big shot.
00:29:33Let's have a look at a replay of this.
00:29:35Australia tried to play a sneaky ball inside the ruck
00:29:38and Plumtree just levels.
00:29:41I missed who it was.
00:29:42Perhaps it was James Slipper.
00:29:43That's why he's down.
00:29:44But that's what I mean.
00:29:45You get that physical dominance in defence,
00:29:46you get the ball back.
00:29:49Thomas will kick to the sideline.
00:29:51Concerns for Australia with James Slipper down.
00:29:55I mentioned his experience in this Wallabies team.
00:29:58The loose set replacement for Australia,
00:29:59Isaac Kylia, is uncapped.
00:30:02Here's the tackle from Wainwright on Wright.
00:30:04In fact, Tame Plumtree.
00:30:08He was close to his chest head area here.
00:30:12It's not this tackle.
00:30:13Slipper, that's just naturally what happens in rugby
00:30:15when you dip.
00:30:17And it's a reasonable shot from Wainwright
00:30:19and Doug Jenkins, but it was a shot on Plumtree.
00:30:21We're not going to have a look at it again.
00:30:23I think Wright's knees were touching the floor.
00:30:24He was sinking as a player.
00:30:26But I do like the aggression from the Welsh defence
00:30:28on that set.
00:30:29That was a much better set from Wales.
00:30:30That would be the messages that would be coming on.
00:30:35Looks like James Slipper is good to go.
00:30:38But it has been quite a rare attacking opportunity
00:30:42for Wales in this test match so far.
00:30:44And they're going to lose possession.
00:30:45It was Liam Wright at the front of the line-up.
00:30:48Brilliant from the Wallaby captain.
00:30:50And here's Josh Fluke.
00:30:52His first test match for the Wallabies this evening.
00:30:57Combination with Paisani in midfield.
00:31:00Salakai Lotto.
00:31:02Advantage again to Australia.
00:31:05Penalty comes.
00:31:06Not releasing.
00:31:08That is six in the last seven given in this match
00:31:12against Wales.
00:31:14There is too many infringements at this stage.
00:31:16Four on the low.
00:31:17So you have to come back to this very quickly.
00:31:19One player will go to the mid.
00:31:21OK.
00:31:22Offside.
00:31:23And back to an altitude.
00:31:25Yeah.
00:31:27I mentioned referee Pierre Brussais.
00:31:30It's his first tier one test match in charge.
00:31:33He's been climbing up the ranks through sevens and twenties.
00:31:36He was an assistant at the Rugby World Cup last year.
00:31:39But a big night for him.
00:31:41And he's not missing much at the moment.
00:31:44Derek Lake just with the underthrow on the line-up,
00:31:46which is what was the turnover.
00:31:47He puts in a brilliant shot in defence.
00:31:49And he gets back up on the ball.
00:31:51But the referee didn't deem him to be seen as releasing.
00:31:54Brilliant shot.
00:31:55He wants to score on the ball.
00:31:56Maybe Wales is a bit too eager.
00:31:57They're getting a bit impatient.
00:31:59Recognise Australia's ball attention is very good.
00:32:01They're just desperate to get that ball back.
00:32:02And you are, naturally.
00:32:03You want to get the ball back to attack.
00:32:05I think just a little bit more patience perhaps is required
00:32:07for Wales in defence.
00:32:10Another visit to the Welsh 22 for Australia.
00:32:13Valentini at the back.
00:32:14McWright coming around the corner as Daniela Tupac.
00:32:20Riffle with the tackle had to be made.
00:32:22Here's Valentini again.
00:32:26Wales have got to be careful not to give away another penalty here.
00:32:28Here's Matt Fessler.
00:32:33Gordon has to go in and help out.
00:32:34Liam Wright plays Scrum Half.
00:32:36Gives it to Slipper.
00:32:38Fraser McWright.
00:32:41This Reds compliment in this Wallaby team.
00:32:48Liz Kiss, of course, now in charge of the Queensland Reds
00:32:50and Super Rugby Pacific.
00:32:51He's been helping out Joe Schmidt with his homework ahead of this one.
00:32:54They're almost there, Australia.
00:32:57Looking for the first try of this series.
00:32:59They're over the line.
00:33:01Riffle shoves them back for Wales.
00:33:03Tupac now for Australia.
00:33:05And you will not stop Daniela Tupac from that far out.
00:33:11It is the Wallabies who have the first try of the series.
00:33:19That's an excellent try from Australia.
00:33:21Making no secret of what they want to do with the opposition 22.
00:33:24Tupac there in shot with the first carry on the line-out peel.
00:33:28Then they back it up with Valentini, their second biggest carrier.
00:33:31And then it's just the alpha test.
00:33:33You can see the backs had no interest in playing that ball.
00:33:35They were telling their forwards to pick and go and play the power game.
00:33:38And then Tupac from one metre out.
00:33:41He's going to be so difficult to stop.
00:33:43Not many people can stop that man in world rugby from one metre.
00:33:47But Australia just turning up the heat on the power.
00:33:50And Wales don't have an answer right now.
00:33:53It's a story so far.
00:33:55Wales conceding penalties.
00:33:57Australia taking advantage.
00:34:00And Daniela Tupac.
00:34:04Scores his seventh try for Australia.
00:34:07And a man that size, 135 kilograms.
00:34:09It was a real grass cutter as well.
00:34:11Got himself really low.
00:34:13There was nothing that Jenkins and Chinza could do about it.
00:34:19Lolosillo.
00:34:21Strokes that one through as well.
00:34:25So Australia dominant early here.
00:34:28Leading Wales by 13 points to three.
00:34:31He's had a big impact on this game so far, hasn't he?
00:34:33Tupac already.
00:34:34We've seen some of the scrum dominance.
00:34:36But even his carries, he's one-pounty on his carries.
00:34:38Because when he carries, Wales have to go so low.
00:34:42They're so fearful of the threat that he has ball in hand.
00:34:46And obviously with his try there and his first-phase carry,
00:34:48he's had a big impact on this game.
00:34:52Wales, of course, on their seven-match unbeaten run.
00:34:54They've only actually led once at half-time this calendar year.
00:34:58That was against England in the Six Nations.
00:35:00They end up losing that game by just a couple of points.
00:35:04And they're ten down here as we're through quarter-time in Sydney.
00:35:11And the yellow card for Gareth Thomas to deal with as well.
00:35:28But they brought down the ball from the line-out here.
00:35:31Playing with 14.
00:35:34And Liam Bevan, his second international,
00:35:39gets it out to Watkins, his first receiver.
00:35:41That's interesting.
00:35:42Then to Thomas.
00:35:43Now Liam Williams into the line.
00:35:45Backwards.
00:35:46Backwards.
00:35:47I mentioned Thomas more often than not,
00:35:48an inside centre at Club Rugby for Cardiff.
00:35:50This time the decision goes against the Wallabies.
00:35:54Six.
00:35:56Six.
00:35:57Six.
00:35:58A decision here to make.
00:35:59Very kickable position.
00:36:03See, personally, if you have the option to take a three-point penalty,
00:36:08which will bring you to within a converted try,
00:36:11which would be seven points, which it would be in this situation.
00:36:14Personally, I'd be tempted.
00:36:15But Wales obviously feel they got some benefit from the maul.
00:36:19They're going to go for the maul again, I imagine.
00:36:21It's often a tactic that you go to when you have a sim bin.
00:36:24Don't really want to play too much loose rugby when you've got a player down.
00:36:26Much better line-up from Wales.
00:36:28Getting that ball at the top of the jump.
00:36:30But Wales back in the maul again.
00:36:31Obviously felt they had some dominance.
00:36:37Taffer Jenkins brings down the line-up this time.
00:36:41Lake has it under control at the back.
00:36:43Playing with seven forwards, though, of course, after the Thomas Yellet.
00:36:47Bevan.
00:36:49Ben Thomas, first receiver that time, chips it through.
00:36:52Dangerousness for Australia.
00:36:53Loose ball.
00:36:54And Rio Dyer arrives for Wales.
00:36:58Was there a knock-on in there?
00:36:59They will certainly check this.
00:37:03It's being grounded by red.
00:37:05I got the grounding by red at the end.
00:37:06But I don't know if there is a knock-on first.
00:37:08Yeah, there's a competition there we need to check.
00:37:10But on field it's dry because we have a grounder.
00:37:14Marius Young and the television match official will oversee these replays.
00:37:17On field it's dry, we got the grounding at the end.
00:37:20But we want to check if there is a potential knock-on first.
00:37:23Probing chip through from Ben Thomas.
00:37:28There is no try.
00:37:29I will come back to advantage.
00:37:39Now this is tricky because it looked like from first replay
00:37:42that it went backwards from Australia.
00:37:43I think what's going to be the important bit is,
00:37:45does Owen Watkin either play him early or does his right hand...
00:37:48There, you can see Owen Watkin's right hand.
00:37:50Does it touch it?
00:37:51And Kasper, that's a knock-on.
00:37:53Don't move forward.
00:37:54Knock-on.
00:37:56Marius, you agree?
00:38:05Yeah, I think.
00:38:10Yeah, knock-on is the decision.
00:38:12Unlucky Wales, they'll go...
00:38:15Back there to play the advantage.
00:38:19Second more penalty from the line-up.
00:38:21Rupert is what allowed that advantage.
00:38:23So Ben Thomas could have a crack and put that ball through.
00:38:26So he had the advantage.
00:38:27It's a shot for...
00:38:28...brings it down again.
00:38:29Lakes there in the boot.
00:38:31And here comes the line-out drive.
00:38:34Players getting involved like Mason Grady.
00:38:36All six foot five of him.
00:38:38They're almost there.
00:38:39And they're going to get a penalty try out of it.
00:38:44Brilliant stuff from Wales up here.
00:38:46Brilliant stuff from Wales after the yellow card to Thomas.
00:38:51And they get the maximum seven with the automatic.
00:38:53Extra two.
00:38:5613-10 now.
00:38:58Great work from Wales up front.
00:39:00And it's a yellow card, is it, this time for Australia.
00:39:03Fraser McWright will go to the sideline.
00:39:06Oh, what a response.
00:39:07Three dominant balls.
00:39:09And how is Arnhem and Wales going to go for the three points
00:39:12going back three penalties ago?
00:39:13Because you're a player down in the forwards.
00:39:15You've struggled.
00:39:16You think Australia might have the dominance up front.
00:39:18But Wales back themselves.
00:39:19You have to give them massive credit for that.
00:39:21They've got three more penalties in a row.
00:39:23And with a player down in the pack to back themselves up front
00:39:26and to go for it, they must have had an enormous belief
00:39:29in their morale going into this game.
00:39:31What a phenomenal response.
00:39:32So now, as you said, McWright now is in the bin.
00:39:34It levels the team out 14-0 per player on the pitch.
00:39:37And Joe Smith will be fuming.
00:39:39Australia have switched off.
00:39:40They've been so dominant for the first quarter of this game.
00:39:43They come back.
00:39:44Wales get field position.
00:39:45They just switched off.
00:39:46They haven't had the same tenacity in their line-out Maldi,
00:39:49the detail in their Maldi.
00:39:51They had two previous moles to try and fix it,
00:39:53and they couldn't.
00:39:54It's brilliant mauling from Wales.
00:39:55But Smith in the shot there will be fuming.
00:39:57Now his Australian team has mentally switched off.
00:40:01Well, as you say, it's a game of 14s now
00:40:03for the best part of six and a half minutes.
00:40:08Actually reminds me, Sam, of the World Cup game
00:40:10in Lyon in September.
00:40:12Australia actually started that game pretty well,
00:40:14and then mentally just kind of dropped away.
00:40:18And Wales took full advantage.
00:40:19Can they keep that going here?
00:40:21Do you know what?
00:40:22That's always been a strength of Wales for a long time.
00:40:24They've always been a very resilient bunch.
00:40:27They always pride themselves on wanting to be a hard team to beat.
00:40:31Now that sounds obvious, but it means just stay in the arm wrestle,
00:40:34stay in the dogfight.
00:40:35You never give up because it's a lack of effort.
00:40:38And that's one thing Wales always pride themselves on.
00:40:41Ellis Bevan kicks high to keep it in field.
00:40:43It's gone backwards into the hands of Josh Fluke.
00:40:48Brad Thorne, who used to coach him at 20s level,
00:40:51and then the red senior side,
00:40:52compared him to the great all-black Conrad Smith
00:40:55in his ability to snake through breaks.
00:40:57But another penalty here is coming against Australia.
00:41:01It's all changed in terms of the decisions.
00:41:03They're all going Wales' way now.
00:41:06Smart from Plumtree.
00:41:07I'd love to see that again.
00:41:08Plumtree looks like he's going to go in and compete.
00:41:10He just jumps out of the way at the last minute.
00:41:12It's a really difficult one for the Australian clean-out player.
00:41:15He goes to clean him out and he goes way past the ball.
00:41:17He goes to floor and looks pretty negative.
00:41:20They become penalties more often than not.
00:41:22But I have seen at the same time that penalty
00:41:24when a player from Wales goes in to compete and he jumps away.
00:41:27They often let those things go.
00:41:29He's not affecting the breakdown.
00:41:34So 13-10.
00:41:36There's no Lollaseop.
00:41:39Awaits this Welsh line-out.
00:41:41What's coming here?
00:41:44Catch and drive has been brilliant so far.
00:41:47They're spotted here.
00:41:49Clean-out by the player on the knee.
00:41:51Like I saw, the clean-out, he cannot attempt to go up on the leg.
00:41:55But it was a PK for me.
00:42:09Yeah, this is the one, yeah?
00:42:14Attacking the lower leg.
00:42:16Is that what they're looking at here?
00:42:18Yeah, so Will Rokeby really trying to protect,
00:42:20particularly the clean-out players.
00:42:22While the crock roller's gone,
00:42:24you want to protect the defensive player's knee.
00:42:26Look at Plymtree and look at the arriving height
00:42:28of the Australian player.
00:42:30Does he go straight for his knee?
00:42:32Good call.
00:42:35Fair gap.
00:42:37Come in.
00:42:44Blake throws the line-out,
00:42:46but it's been turned over again by the Wallabies.
00:42:48At the front.
00:42:50Not for the first time this evening.
00:42:52Lollaseop kicks deep,
00:42:54but he finds Josh Hathaway.
00:42:56He's got the ball.
00:42:58He's got the ball.
00:43:00He's got the ball.
00:43:02He finds Josh Hathaway.
00:43:06He's overcooked that,
00:43:08as Hathaway, the debutant for Wales,
00:43:10he'll come all the way back
00:43:12from where he kicked that
00:43:14for an Australian line-out.
00:43:16Yeah, just overcooked it.
00:43:18I quite like the decision,
00:43:20but Australia have got two full-backs in place there,
00:43:22so two players covering deep.
00:43:24You want that ball to go over that player
00:43:26to make him turn, maybe go towards the corner flag a bit more.
00:43:28But it was great line-out defence,
00:43:30wasn't it, from Australia?
00:43:32I mean, a typical forward looking at the set-piece,
00:43:34but Australia are getting up and competing very well
00:43:36and making it very hard for Dewey Lake to hit his jumper.
00:43:40Liam Wright, the Australian captain,
00:43:42targeting his Welsh line-out.
00:43:44The other player in their
00:43:46full-back who's known for his line-out steals
00:43:48is the rookie Jeremy Williams,
00:43:50one of the leading line-out stealers
00:43:52in Super Rugby Pacific.
00:43:54They always have great athletes
00:43:56in Australia, don't they?
00:43:58They're very good athletes,
00:44:00where the ball carries, they're getting up off the ground.
00:44:02Fesler's been overthrown.
00:44:04Slipper actually does really well,
00:44:06and Gordon scoops it up
00:44:08and lays it back for Lolicio.
00:44:10Salakai Lotto.
00:44:12Good tackle from Lake on him.
00:44:14Slipper's there
00:44:16to play Scrum half this time.
00:44:24Lotto.
00:44:28Lolicio.
00:44:34Lolicio.
00:44:36Tupac leaves it behind,
00:44:38he's gone forward,
00:44:40and Mason Grady has it for Wales.
00:44:46Ellis Bevan kicks
00:44:48in behind Kellaway.
00:44:50Kellaway,
00:44:52once of Northampton Saints.
00:44:54Back to Dangunu.
00:44:56A hurried clearance.
00:45:00And a good net game for Wales.
00:45:02Here comes Liam Williams.
00:45:04Joe Schmidt was gushing about him
00:45:06and his attacking ability in transition
00:45:08during the week.
00:45:10Chipped that over the sideline.
00:45:12Hathaway again with the kicking game.
00:45:14Perhaps they could have kept the ball
00:45:16in hand there, Sam?
00:45:18Yeah, perhaps. When you look at where Wales had the ball,
00:45:20it was from a box kick from Ellis Bevan
00:45:22back in their own half.
00:45:24So from a territorial perspective,
00:45:26it's been a positive game for Wales.
00:45:28Another hurried
00:45:30clearance for Australia.
00:45:32You'll find the salvation of the sideline.
00:45:34Lolicio there, he's still communicating
00:45:36with his teammates.
00:45:38It did look a little rushed.
00:45:402.40 to go
00:45:42on the
00:45:44Gareth Thomas yellow card.
00:45:46Five and a half minutes for Fraser McWright.
00:45:48Still playing a game of 14s here.
00:45:54The line-out steal Australia, but Wales
00:45:56have it. Thomas to Watkin.
00:45:58Hit hard in midfield.
00:46:02That was Kellaway, the right winger
00:46:04coming in on defence.
00:46:06Here's Dowie-Lake.
00:46:08Double tackle on him. Lotto
00:46:10and Wright. And Australia have won the ball
00:46:12back.
00:46:14Lotto flings it back.
00:46:18To Paisani.
00:46:20He dabs it through.
00:46:22Williams is there again.
00:46:24And a nice angled kick from
00:46:28Liam Williams. And that could be
00:46:30a...
00:46:32No, not the 50-22. I think it was
00:46:34actually. Yeah, he was in his own half, surely.
00:46:38It will be a Wales throw to the
00:46:40line-out. That's a brilliant kick from Liam
00:46:42Williams. It was lovely cover
00:46:44from Liam Williams. The kick wasn't really on from
00:46:46Australia. Lolicio tried to find
00:46:48that space in the corner, but Liam Williams picked it up
00:46:50very well, put it back. But Wales find
00:46:52it so hard to launch off line-out.
00:46:54The last three line-outs of Australia getting up
00:46:56really challenging this throw from Dowie-Lake, not
00:46:58giving them an easy throw.
00:47:00So this line-out launch
00:47:02plays are difficult for Wales, but
00:47:04great kick and good field
00:47:06position. Gareth Thomas
00:47:08back onto the field.
00:47:10So 15 on 14
00:47:12for these
00:47:14phases of play
00:47:16for Wales.
00:47:20Well,
00:47:22Australia contest here.
00:47:24Lake to throw.
00:47:26Jenkins goes to
00:47:28the front and wins it. At the front
00:47:30the exit's a man. Hathaway
00:47:32getting involved, but has been knocked
00:47:34forward by Dowie-Lake.
00:47:36It was a good tackle. Lukan
00:47:38Salakai-Lotto getting the pats on
00:47:40the back. Good
00:47:42shot from Salakai-Lotto.
00:47:44Wales going for the shift drive.
00:47:46Their previous three drives where they got the
00:47:48try, they kept it straight.
00:47:50So a shift drive is when you have the ball,
00:47:52the line-out catcher catches the ball, he gives it to another
00:47:54pod, and then Wales broke out
00:47:56again. Probably thinking Australia were going to try and hit
00:47:58it to stop another dominant
00:48:00drive in Maugham. So just a bit of variety in their
00:48:02attack in play. It was a good shot.
00:48:04He dislodges the ball from Dowie-Lake. Key carrier
00:48:06for Wales. I'm sure Australia identified
00:48:08him as one of Wales' key ball carriers
00:48:10in that pack. If you stop Dowie-Lake going forward,
00:48:12he'll stop a lot of Wales'
00:48:14going forward from their pack.
00:48:16See the Wales
00:48:18replacements
00:48:20getting
00:48:24warmed up.
00:48:26Hugh Bennett, the head of
00:48:28physical performance of this Welsh team.
00:48:32A defensive scrum here for
00:48:34Australia. Cracking
00:48:36start from them.
00:48:38Wales with that penalty
00:48:40try.
00:48:42Found their way back and Australia still playing
00:48:44with 14 here.
00:48:46Looking for
00:48:48a clean exit.
00:48:58Matt Fesler there.
00:49:00Looking for Australia. There's
00:49:02Lord Laurie.
00:49:06Laurie Fisher being brought into this
00:49:08coaching team by Joe Schmidt.
00:49:10He calls them Dad's Army because Mike
00:49:12Schmidt.
00:49:14He's got over 200 matches of experience
00:49:16with the All Blacks. He's part of it as well.
00:49:18Geoff Parling, former England
00:49:20and British and Irish line.
00:49:22He's the line-out coach
00:49:24for Australia.
00:49:26So far so good from his point of view
00:49:28in this game. Turned over plenty
00:49:30of Welsh ball at that set piece.
00:49:32Scrum goes forward for the Wallabies
00:49:34and there's a penalty.
00:49:36It's going well for Australia,
00:49:38isn't it? That's a real bright
00:49:40moment so far. Taniella Tupo, the
00:49:42tri-scorer, is limping.
00:49:44Yes, he got injured at the World Cup.
00:49:46He and Will Skelton, didn't he?
00:49:48They started pretty well at the World Cup against
00:49:50Georgia Australia with a big win
00:49:52in Paris and they lost
00:49:54Tupo and Skelton
00:49:56for pretty much the rest of the pool play
00:49:58and never really recovered.
00:50:00See, even Skelton, popping Skelton behind
00:50:02Tupo in a scrum. You cannot
00:50:04underestimate.
00:50:06You're knocking on 300 kilos there.
00:50:08Tupo's got to be 140, Skelton's
00:50:10got to be minimum 140.
00:50:12280 kilos of weight. I know
00:50:14Skelton's not playing but that was a big blow
00:50:16for them in the World Cup when that happened.
00:50:18So much pressure for an opposition loosehead
00:50:20and second row to absorb.
00:50:22But this scrum dominance has got them out of a sticky
00:50:24situation. You felt Wales, the
00:50:26tide might have been turning but Australia
00:50:28have managed to switch momentum when it's been scrum time.
00:50:30Wales want to try and stay away from scrums this game.
00:50:32It's not going their way so far.
00:50:34Liam Wright wins it at the front. Here's Valentini.
00:50:36Yeah, one of the stories coming in was
00:50:38that Joe Schmidt has not selected any
00:50:40overseas Wallaby players, including the likes
00:50:42of Marita Coram, Betty
00:50:44and Will Skelton. He's gone local
00:50:46building the
00:50:48base in Australian rugby.
00:50:50Hathaway
00:50:52climbed high. Was he taken in the air?
00:50:54A few Welsh
00:50:56fans at Allianz Stadium had something
00:50:58to say about that. Yep,
00:51:00they get the penalty.
00:51:03A little bit down. Gunu was on the
00:51:05chase.
00:51:22So Ben Thomas, it'll be fascinating
00:51:24to get the thoughts of Dan
00:51:26Beggar at half time on his performance
00:51:28so far in that 10 shirt. Here's the
00:51:31He gets it well, Hathaway. It's really
00:51:33hard when you're stuck under that ball and you're not really
00:51:35coming on to it. Gunu's got
00:51:37a big run up. He can probably get a bit more
00:51:39height, but he's gone for man and ball there.
00:51:41Just lacks a little bit of composure
00:51:43Australia where the momentum has swung their way.
00:51:45They've just given away that penalty to let
00:51:47Wales back in the game. Chinza wins the
00:51:49line out that time. Here's Wainwright again.
00:51:51His battle with Valentini.
00:51:53Price of admission alone
00:51:55there. Two Warriors at number eight.
00:51:57Australia looking again
00:51:59to force the turnover
00:52:01in the tackle, and they've done exactly that.
00:52:03It's gone forward
00:52:05off a Welsh hand now. Australia
00:52:07can put it through the hands.
00:52:09It's the kick pass, in fact, from Lolicio.
00:52:11Rio Diaz can't hold on.
00:52:13It's gone over the sideline.
00:52:15It'll be an Australian throw.
00:52:19I think what that set of plays, Rupert,
00:52:21demonstrates from a Welsh perspective, which Welsh
00:52:23fans have seen for a long time, and this was
00:52:25the same as last week in South Africa.
00:52:27Wales against South Africa in a similar amount of
00:52:29carry. South Africa made 450 contact
00:52:31metres. Wales made 150. They're lacking
00:52:33the ball carries at the moment.
00:52:35Massive day, of course. We're off to Pretoria
00:52:37this afternoon. There's been a lot of talk off the
00:52:39field between these two teams. Never boring
00:52:41with Rassi or Rasmus at first test. South
00:52:43Africa, Ireland from Loftus, and then
00:52:45we go to Mendoza, Argentina
00:52:47against a much changed France team.
00:52:49That's from eight o'clock tonight on Sky Sports
00:52:51Action.
00:52:53Brilliant day of international rugby on Sky
00:52:55Sports. Here's Valentini.
00:53:01Lolosillo, taken
00:53:03high by
00:53:05Salakaya Lotu.
00:53:07Tupou chopping him to the floor
00:53:09with Dowie Lake. He pretty much
00:53:11can only go low on Tupou.
00:53:13Lolosillo hits it high into
00:53:15the Sydney Knights.
00:53:17Thomas is underneath it, brings
00:53:19it down safely.
00:53:25Tame Plumtree.
00:53:27Impressed against the Springboks
00:53:29a couple of weeks ago. Maintains that
00:53:31starting six shirt.
00:53:37Bevan just steps back into his own 22
00:53:39and then kicks it high.
00:53:41Dies on the chase
00:53:43but Tom Wright has it
00:53:45for Australia. One of these
00:53:47players that was overlooked by Odie Jones
00:53:49at the World Cup last year.
00:53:51So much experience and
00:53:53a small amount of quality left at home.
00:53:55In the end it didn't work.
00:53:57And that's why they're having to
00:53:59rebuild here under
00:54:01Joe Schmidt, the Wallabies.
00:54:03Jake Gordon.
00:54:05He kicks it high now. Approaching half
00:54:07time here in Sydney and Ellis.
00:54:09Bevan has dropped it cold.
00:54:15And quite a lot of rain around. You can see that
00:54:17the pitch is pretty damp but
00:54:19that was a straightforward catch
00:54:21for the Welsh scrum half.
00:54:23Ellis Bevan just delivered a brilliant box
00:54:25kick himself one minute ago with a superb
00:54:27chase from Rio Dyer.
00:54:29But Australia then delivered the same back.
00:54:31They didn't have a very good kick chase.
00:54:33They did have some time there, Ellis Bevan.
00:54:35Giving Australia
00:54:37the upper hand again. I think he's been kicking
00:54:39very well. Wales' kick chase has been
00:54:41excellent but just let Australia back in.
00:54:43It didn't feel Australia really worked
00:54:45too hard for that penalty. Normally your wingers
00:54:47are working so hard.
00:54:49Relatively clear catch there. Not a player
00:54:51close to him. He'd be disappointed with that but he's
00:54:53a good player.
00:54:55Make sure he has a positive impact next job. He's been
00:54:57playing well so far.
00:54:59Keep your eye on the ball, kids. He just had a little
00:55:01look, didn't he, at the on-running kick
00:55:03chases.
00:55:07Back to 15 players here as well. Australia
00:55:09with Fraser McWright out of
00:55:11ascendance. So big, big chance for them right
00:55:13before half time to
00:55:15extend their lead.
00:55:17Liam Wright,
00:55:19the captain, calling the line-outs, calls
00:55:21it to himself and they
00:55:23bring it down well. Fesler has it.
00:55:29Just one use at warning now
00:55:31these days and Gordon
00:55:33to Paisani
00:55:35tries to punch a hole
00:55:37on the Welsh defence. Coming back to Tupac.
00:55:39He'll punch holes for you.
00:55:41That's for sure.
00:55:44James Slipper now.
00:55:4610 metres out. Australia
00:55:48juggled by
00:55:50Salakai Lotto. It's gone forward. Good
00:55:52defence there. It was
00:55:54Daffod Jenkins with
00:55:56Tommy Refle, I think, double tackle
00:55:58on the big number four.
00:56:00Yeah, good spot, Rupert. You're
00:56:02exactly right. Refle and Daff Jenkins
00:56:04bringing the heat off the line again. That's what
00:56:06causes what looks like
00:56:08an enforced error but that's why just those efforts
00:56:10in coming off the line,
00:56:12the blitz defence, as defence coaches call it,
00:56:14rush defence. You come off the line, get
00:56:16in the eyeline of the catcher.
00:56:18Put him under pressure. Don't make it an easy
00:56:20catch. That's been good
00:56:22from Wales so far this game. They've
00:56:24managed to upset Australia with some of their line speed
00:56:26and they've doubled up
00:56:28in that last defensive set. Much better on the Australian
00:56:30carry. Just stopping that momentum going forward
00:56:32which they managed to get in the first 20.
00:56:34So Wales' defence this last 20
00:56:36I think has been a lot better than the start of the game.
00:56:38They've stunted Australia's momentum
00:56:40much better.
00:56:42Joe Schmid will
00:56:44prepare for his first
00:56:46half-time team talk as head
00:56:48coach of Australia.
00:56:50Shouting there to Laurie Fisher
00:56:52as Geoff Parling joining
00:56:54him.
00:56:56Warren Gatlin alongside Mike Forshaw, the defence coach.
00:56:58Rob Howley to his left.
00:57:00Alex King in the distance.
00:57:10So final minutes
00:57:12of this first half.
00:57:14Wales will just look to get out of their red zone
00:57:16here.
00:57:20Scrum
00:57:22has been a problem for them at
00:57:24times in this match so far.
00:57:28There's the shove from Australia
00:57:30but Wainwright does really well.
00:57:32You knew that was his plan right from
00:57:34the start. Get away
00:57:36quick as the power was coming from
00:57:38Australia. He did really well the number eight.
00:57:44That's how we like. Just managing
00:57:46the clock here now. Just a few seconds
00:57:48to wind down.
00:57:52And here's Ben Thomas
00:57:54as the siren goes for half-time.
00:57:56He will put it over the sideline
00:57:58and the players will
00:58:00go to half-time. Separated by
00:58:02just three points here
00:58:04in Sydney. A try piece.
00:58:06Taniella Tufo for the Wallabies.
00:58:08The penalty try for Wales.
00:58:10Just the one penalty goal the difference.
00:58:1213-10 Wallabies
00:58:14over Wales at half-time.
00:58:22Together we reinvented
00:58:24the Fortune 500 list.
00:58:26Anna Rupert for second half.
00:58:30Thanks Anna. Liam Williams ready to go.
00:58:32Three points in arrears of the Wallabies.
00:58:36Here are Wales.
00:58:42That was Bevan also.
00:58:44Ready for action.
00:58:50There has been a couple of changes for
00:58:52Australia. Angus
00:58:54Blythe
00:58:56makes his test debut. He comes on
00:58:58and Alan Alatowa
00:59:00in number 18 there. You can see him at the bottom
00:59:02of the frame.
00:59:04He is out there.
00:59:06Two changes up front for Australia.
00:59:08As they go into the second half
00:59:10with a three-point lead in Sydney. Not much
00:59:12between these two teams as Chris
00:59:14Chinza does really well
00:59:16to bring that
00:59:18down on the second grab. Ben Thomas
00:59:20and Dyer getting involved
00:59:22on his left wing. Here is Liam Williams
00:59:24to Josh Hathaway.
00:59:26Chips it back infield.
00:59:28Behind Tom Wright. He gets there first.
00:59:30It will be an attacking
00:59:32scrum to Wales. Lively start
00:59:34to the second half.
00:59:36Very lively. We were just discussing
00:59:38at halftime looking at the stats. It has been one offload
00:59:40all game. Chinza gets an offload away.
00:59:42Wales can then play to space
00:59:44and get to the width because Australia don't manage
00:59:46to get the defensive width
00:59:48and line speed that they want. Wales
00:59:50go to the edge. Nice kick from Hathaway
00:59:52just to pop it in and try and keep the ball alive.
00:59:54Because Australia have taken it back
00:59:56Wales now get the ball back.
00:59:58It's a key part of Josh Hathaway's game actually.
01:00:00I saw him score a hat-trick
01:00:02against Saracens in the premiership earlier this season.
01:00:04One of them came from a chip and chase.
01:00:06He really does like that.
01:00:08That was more intended for the players infield.
01:00:10Good energy
01:00:12from Wales here early on in the second half
01:00:14but this is a concern.
01:00:22Thomas just getting some attention. Big strapping
01:00:24on that right thigh.
01:00:26Martini with a bit of
01:00:28attention from the physio
01:00:30as well for Australia.
01:00:36That looks like a dead leg from Gareth Thomas.
01:00:38When you have a big pad on the side of your quad
01:00:40there it's often protecting
01:00:42the dead legs. You don't want another impact
01:00:44on that because it offers them stiff in Newark.
01:00:46Naturally
01:00:48a lot of front rows only play to 60 minutes. Wales
01:00:50probably want to get 50-60 out of him before they make changes.
01:00:56Here for the number 19
01:00:58Angus Blythe.
01:01:00On debut.
01:01:04So interesting call from Joe Schmidt
01:01:06to give Angus Blythe. You can see him
01:01:08with the retro tape around his head.
01:01:10So you've got two
01:01:12rookies in the engine room for the Wallabies
01:01:14for this second
01:01:16half.
01:01:22The scrum was a bit of a problem for Wales
01:01:24in the first 40 minutes.
01:01:26Can they make the best use of this attacking
01:01:28opportunity? We're going to have a reset.
01:01:30Pierre Brousset will have a chat.
01:01:32Kenzie Mathijs has come on
01:01:34at loose head for Gareth Thomas. Gareth Thomas
01:01:36couldn't continue. So straight into
01:01:38the deep end.
01:01:40As you mentioned against Anna Latoa, very experienced
01:01:42player. Been around this
01:01:44Australian team for a long, long time.
01:01:50Lucan Salakar-Lotto
01:01:52is having a big game for Australia as well.
01:01:56It is being replaced. So here we go
01:01:58again with the reset.
01:02:00Two scrum penalties
01:02:02against Wales in the first 40
01:02:04minutes.
01:02:06Front rows go down.
01:02:12And we'll go again.
01:02:14You mentioned
01:02:16in the first half, Rupert, you can't take
01:02:18another scrum if there is a free
01:02:20kick. I like it. We're seeing now
01:02:22two scrum resets. A reset on average,
01:02:24you're looking at 30 seconds.
01:02:26When the referee blows his whistle to when the ball comes
01:02:28out of the next scrum, it's a minimum 30 seconds.
01:02:30I think that's a really good
01:02:32law change that World Rugby have had.
01:02:34They've tried to speed up the game because
01:02:36on average if a game lasts 35 minutes, ball in
01:02:38play, if you can reduce
01:02:40two or three reset scrums, that's an extra minute
01:02:42and a half of play. An extra 5%
01:02:44of rugby that you can want. So I think it's a good call
01:02:46that. I want to see as few
01:02:48reset scrums as possible.
01:02:50Well, this is the third
01:02:52attempt at this scrum. Wainwright
01:02:54off the back for Wales. Josh Hathaway
01:02:56put over the sideline
01:02:58by Djangunu.
01:03:04It's a good solid
01:03:06platform from Wales up front.
01:03:08Matthias doing well on the loose head side.
01:03:14Philippe Djangunu
01:03:16read that well as they peeled around
01:03:18the short side. Fesler
01:03:20finds Wright who's been imperious
01:03:22at the line out for Australia so far this evening.
01:03:24Valentini over his own
01:03:26five metre line.
01:03:30Jake Gordon doing a lot of talking.
01:03:32Positioning his ball carriers.
01:03:34It was the hooker Fesler he found.
01:03:36And there's
01:03:38Matthias going to
01:03:40work with the clear out, but Australia should be able
01:03:42to exit here.
01:03:46Gordon
01:03:48intends
01:03:50to find touch and does so.
01:03:52So that opportunity for Wales.
01:03:54Five metres
01:03:56out with the scrum. They don't come away with
01:03:58points.
01:04:00Great line out under pressure
01:04:02from Australia, from Wright. Great take.
01:04:04That box kick, not getting the distance you want.
01:04:06If you get to the halfway line, anyone who watches
01:04:08Dupont gets to the halfway line from those five
01:04:10metre box kicks. Not quite the distance there
01:04:12from Gordon. Schindler at the front of the line out.
01:04:14Wainwright. He's having a bit
01:04:16away at penalty advantage though.
01:04:18Free hit here for Liam
01:04:20Williams to dink it through for Rio
01:04:22Dyer. It's anybody's
01:04:24ball. It's loose and it's
01:04:26over the sideline. They'll go back.
01:04:32Tame Plumtree getting a round of applause from
01:04:34Welsh support there in the crowd.
01:04:36Not rolling away Australia.
01:04:38Well similar to the first up
01:04:40it's role reversal now. We said when penalties come
01:04:42it's often a product of physicality. That's
01:04:44the product of two dominant
01:04:46Welsh carries. Great carry.
01:04:48Great first phase starter with Aaron Wainwright
01:04:50carrying for Wales. Then Dewey Lake with
01:04:52a powerful second carry. Guess what?
01:04:54Penalty against Australia for not rolling away because
01:04:56you win the contact. It shows it's so
01:04:58important. If you can manufacture
01:05:00a first or an effective
01:05:02first two, three phases
01:05:04it gets you on the front foot and it doesn't lead
01:05:06to some space out wide or
01:05:08ultimately a line break. Could be three
01:05:10opportunities. So much better attacking
01:05:12ability from Wales from the line up.
01:05:20So another opportunity here
01:05:22for Ben Thomas.
01:05:26He's had a composed
01:05:28match so far
01:05:30to level the scores here in Sydney.
01:05:32Conversation between Rob Howley
01:05:34and Warren Gatlin. They look pretty relaxed.
01:05:40Ben
01:05:44Thomas
01:05:46sends it through for Wales.
01:05:48We are level
01:05:5013 each at Allianz Stadium.
01:05:52I think Rob Howley
01:05:54will be happy with how the attack has been
01:05:56in this first half. Getting to space
01:05:58early on. Showing a bit more
01:06:00dominance in the carry. Getting some
01:06:02better post contact metres
01:06:04in some of their starter plays
01:06:06and it's opened the field up for Wales.
01:06:08Will he be happy with the start in the second half
01:06:10for Howley?
01:06:12William Williams
01:06:14can't pick up the
01:06:16bobbling ball
01:06:18and it's an attacking scrum here
01:06:20for Australia. Just what you don't want after
01:06:22kicking points at the
01:06:24other end. You just want to bring the
01:06:26restart down and go again.
01:06:28It was an awkward one.
01:06:32William Williams brought back a full
01:06:34back to start here
01:06:36for Wales after he's played on the wing.
01:06:38Cam Wynnett giving the
01:06:40rest of this weekend.
01:06:42Cam
01:06:44Wynnett has been a great find for Wales. Probably had his
01:06:46opportunity accelerated
01:06:48into the Wales team. Warren Gatlin
01:06:50backed in all through the Six Nations
01:06:52but Liam Williams came in last
01:06:54week was very safe under the high ball
01:06:56which is such a massive part of a Tassel
01:06:58game. Traditionally
01:07:00a very error free kind of player
01:07:02and brings vital experience in that back three.
01:07:04So what can Australia
01:07:06conjure up here? Midfield
01:07:08scrum. It's a messy old scrum.
01:07:10Valentini gets it away to
01:07:12Gordon. Out the back to
01:07:14Lolicia. Long ball over the top to
01:07:16Kelleway. Into the
01:07:18Welsh 22. Good quick ball.
01:07:22Good carry again.
01:07:24Looking to recycle once more.
01:07:26Slipper now.
01:07:28Right.
01:07:30The
01:07:32captain.
01:07:34Now Jeremy Williams
01:07:36who's looked at home in a Wallaby shirt in his debut
01:07:38test match. A dummy from Jake Gordon.
01:07:42It was Daffod Jenkins who had to make
01:07:44the tackle. He was alert to the danger. Here's
01:07:46Rob Valentini.
01:07:48Edging closer Australia.
01:07:50Slipper there. Gets off the deck.
01:07:52Gives it to
01:07:54Fesler.
01:07:56Williams
01:07:58to Angus Blythe.
01:08:00Another uncapped
01:08:02player for Australia. There's seven of them
01:08:04and they're 23 today in Joe Schmidt's
01:08:06first test match in charge.
01:08:08Alan Alatoa.
01:08:10No debuts on him. His 68th test
01:08:12for Australia.
01:08:14Crowd getting behind the Wallabies in
01:08:16Sydney. It's been a long
01:08:18time since they won a test match here.
01:08:20Not since
01:08:22France 10 years ago on this
01:08:24of Australia's success. There's a
01:08:26good tackle. It was Kemsley
01:08:28Mathias and Plumtree
01:08:30for Wales. Wallaceo
01:08:32is just going to hold on here and run it through.
01:08:34In fact it was
01:08:36Paisani.
01:08:38Australia still cooking
01:08:40with the ball in hand here. Fesler
01:08:42dummies and goes.
01:08:44Tom Wright.
01:08:46He has a dig
01:08:48as well. Multiple
01:08:50phase rugby here from the Wallabies.
01:08:52Wales in danger
01:08:54of getting offside. There was a ref who was shot through.
01:08:56Wallaceo is in there
01:08:58at Scrum Harp. But Wales
01:09:00get the penalty.
01:09:02Chris Shunza
01:09:04coming up with an all
01:09:06important steal right in front of the
01:09:08try line.
01:09:10That's a massive moment for Wales.
01:09:12Australia going through so many phases
01:09:14and Wales didn't have an answer
01:09:16for many of their carries. Australia sneaking
01:09:18a meter forward every single carry.
01:09:20Shunza, this is a great one. He survives
01:09:22two or three clean outs. He's in there for
01:09:24a long time. The referee hasn't
01:09:26given those tackle penalties very easily
01:09:28today. He's got to be in there for
01:09:30four or five seconds, survive two
01:09:32or three clean outs. Shunza's been sniffing around
01:09:34this game. He's been there a few times.
01:09:36But to bail Wales out of that situation on a
01:09:38five meter line is absolute gold dust.
01:09:40Great impact from Shunza. Yeah, he missed
01:09:42the Six Nations. He had broken his foot,
01:09:44was recovering, had a bit of a setback.
01:09:46But Warren Gatlin
01:09:48thrilled to have him back
01:09:50in the reckoning. And a bit experimental
01:09:52as well. He's been playing all his rugby
01:09:54for Exeter, either wearing the 6 or 7
01:09:56jersey. He's come back from
01:09:58his injury and he's looking enormous.
01:10:00His upper body is massive.
01:10:02I think he's touching up on 120 kilos
01:10:04now, which is what you're looking at for your
01:10:06international second rows. But that pairing,
01:10:08Shunza, 22
01:10:10years of age, Dav Jenkins, 21.
01:10:12I think Wales are keeping a really close eye on those
01:10:14two because that could be a second row partnership
01:10:16to carry Wales forward
01:10:18for some amount of time.
01:10:20He did some media during the week.
01:10:22Sometimes injuries,
01:10:24you know better than anyone, Sam, can help a player
01:10:26out in terms of their longevity
01:10:28and getting to where they want to be.
01:10:30Don't dwell on it. Work on a weakness.
01:10:32Get it better and come back a bigger, stronger,
01:10:34better player.
01:10:36He's thrown to Shunza at the front there.
01:10:38But not straight.
01:10:40I don't know how to go
01:10:42six meters.
01:10:44That's a give back for Australia
01:10:46after all that good work.
01:10:48So Wales go into the front of the line.
01:10:50I think they've lost a little bit of confidence to go
01:10:52to the middle and to the back
01:10:54because Australia have been picking them up and competing
01:10:56well. See that throw is under. You need to get that
01:10:58Chris Shunza needs to be at full extension
01:11:00with his arms right above his head. That throw
01:11:02is probably half a meter too
01:11:04low. Shunza jumps into
01:11:06the line a bit, which paints the picture that
01:11:08the throw might not be as straight as it could be.
01:11:10I think that's just a little bit of a work
01:11:12on for Wales going into next week. The line now
01:11:14stunted their attack a little bit.
01:11:16James Slipper
01:11:18is headed to the sideline
01:11:20for Australia.
01:11:22It's a new tight head prop and it's
01:11:24Isaac Kylia on debut
01:11:26for Melbourne Rebel.
01:11:28There he is on the loose head side.
01:11:30Tom and Chilean heritage.
01:11:32What a moment for him.
01:11:34His first international.
01:11:36Gordon.
01:11:38Here's Djamgunu
01:11:40at pace off his left wing.
01:11:42Liam Wright
01:11:44the captain.
01:11:46Williams.
01:11:48Three
01:11:50really quick phases there for Australia.
01:11:52Now they change direction to
01:11:54Blythe.
01:11:56She went to high school on the Gold Coast with
01:11:58Noah Lollasea
01:12:00the fly half.
01:12:02Played in the first 15 together.
01:12:04Here is Lollasea.
01:12:06Paisani
01:12:08actually.
01:12:12Lollasea now.
01:12:14Opportunity for Filippo Djamgunu.
01:12:16It's opened up for him. He's got support.
01:12:18He ignored Kelleway
01:12:20but has he slid over the line? He has
01:12:22so. Try Australia.
01:12:26I thought he'd missed his chance Djamgunu.
01:12:30But he slid in for the Wallabies.
01:12:32And they extend their lead
01:12:34early in the second half.
01:12:38When you saw it Rupert
01:12:40it was three excellent carries
01:12:42where they just kept going forward.
01:12:44Amazing grade. He just gets stuck inside
01:12:46Alan Latoa. He goes to bite in.
01:12:48Probably thinking Australia are going to play
01:12:50a bit tighter like they have been for most of the game
01:12:52but they go out the back.
01:12:54And you can see as a centre he needs to be on the outside
01:12:56shoulder of Alan Latoa so he can check him
01:12:58in case he carries it.
01:13:00If he goes to the back he can kick off
01:13:02and get Djamgunu.
01:13:04But he just gets a little bit stuck. This will show us better.
01:13:06You see Grady of 12 just gets stuck
01:13:08on the inside of Alan Latoa and he can't get the outside
01:13:10space. Probably hasn't helped out
01:13:12from the lack of width for Wales. Ideally
01:13:14Grady wants to be a bit wider.
01:13:16He doesn't want to be taking those forward
01:13:18runners. Wales need to be getting better width
01:13:20in defence but they don't because Australia
01:13:22carried so powerfully.
01:13:24But it's a great finish from Australia.
01:13:26They find the space really well don't they?
01:13:28Well I reckon if he hadn't
01:13:30slid in there over the line he might not
01:13:32got such a
01:13:34big cuddle from Andrew Kelleway.
01:13:36I reckon
01:13:38had a walk in
01:13:40for Djamgunu. Two big carries.
01:13:42One in the lead up in that sequence and the finish
01:13:44as well.
01:13:46That's what's good from Australia though. It was powerful
01:13:48stuff but when they decided to go
01:13:50and they wanted to go to space they found
01:13:52it and they got there well through accurate
01:13:54passing. So very
01:13:56patient in that build up but when the space was
01:13:58on, bang, they went there and they took it. That's what we used
01:14:00to see from Australia. We don't want them
01:14:02to turn into just this power team. That's not them.
01:14:04They've still got backs who can play, who can
01:14:06find space, who have great ball in hand.
01:14:08Great one on one.
01:14:10And that was great recognition of space there from Australia.
01:14:14Djamgunu. He'll be playing the 13th
01:14:16shirt for the Rebels in Super Rugby
01:14:18Pacific this season. He's had a really good
01:14:20campaign but
01:14:22back into his
01:14:24traditional wing position.
01:14:26There he is again with the carry off the restart.
01:14:28And Gordon
01:14:30will give it to Fesler. So
01:14:32five points the difference.
01:14:34We're 54 minutes through the conversion
01:14:36from Lollasea. It was
01:14:38unsuccessful. He's not having a great night
01:14:40with the boots.
01:14:42Off the tee at least
01:14:44as Gordon kicks it up towards
01:14:46halfway.
01:14:50Jake Gordon.
01:14:52Birthday. He's 31 today.
01:14:54Wallaby
01:14:56mentioned that Joe Schmidt
01:14:58Rugby Australia
01:15:00enforced his contract.
01:15:04Apparently something on the table
01:15:06from Perpignan in the top 14 in France.
01:15:08He said no, we need you.
01:15:14Well it's Bevan to
01:15:16Thomas to Williams.
01:15:22Derry Lake out the back to Ben
01:15:24Thomas again. Kicks
01:15:26wiper style. Long
01:15:28and angled into the corner. It's a good
01:15:30one. It found grass. That's what they're aiming for.
01:15:34Australia don't find touch.
01:15:36Keep it in field and here's
01:15:38Ben Thomas again.
01:15:42Wainwright.
01:15:44His 50th test match and
01:15:46look at him go. Just got his heels
01:15:48clipped by Jake Gordon
01:15:50and he's lost the ball on the floor.
01:15:54Try saving ankle
01:15:56tap perhaps from Jake Gordon for
01:15:58Australia. Wainwright
01:16:00was through it looked.
01:16:02Australia
01:16:04hurry the exit and now Josh Hathaway.
01:16:06Here he goes
01:16:08the Gloucester man.
01:16:10Australia look for the
01:16:12turnover but it's a penalty to
01:16:14Wales. Not supporting
01:16:16their own body weight. It was Angus Blythe who had a
01:16:18nibble.
01:16:34That's the
01:16:36turnover originally from Lucio. This is now
01:16:38the penalty. His hand
01:16:40redeems beyond the floor.
01:16:42I've seen those given.
01:16:44He does win the battle of the height.
01:16:46He beats them to the
01:16:48rock but his elbows were on the ground.
01:16:50He's a tall, long man. It doesn't paint
01:16:52a great picture.
01:16:54Wales do now in this 22.
01:16:56They haven't had a load of territories.
01:16:58We see Jim Botham coming on now in the back row.
01:17:02Wales need to get something from this visit to the
01:17:0422. Moore was dominant in the first half.
01:17:10Jim Botham out there.
01:17:12His granddad Beefy did amazing
01:17:14across the road at the Sydney cricket ground
01:17:16from this stadium.
01:17:20Here come Wales
01:17:22looking to level the scores with a try.
01:17:24How about this for another drive?
01:17:26They're over the line again.
01:17:30This Wales line-out drive
01:17:32has been
01:17:34absolutely first class.
01:17:36It's Jim Botham
01:17:38who's only been out there
01:17:40for a few seconds.
01:17:42He has a try
01:17:44for Wales. We're level.
01:17:46It's smart from Wales. Watch how they come around
01:17:48the right-hand side. Australia think
01:17:50they're going to go straight again. They've showed lovely
01:17:52variety in their attack in
01:17:54Moore. They went round the back
01:17:56in the first half. They went straight for the first three
01:17:58then they went round the back. This is when they go to the front.
01:18:00They come down. They shift it to the front.
01:18:02Australia don't have the players there to defend
01:18:04it. Wales have
01:18:06too much momentum. Only a penalty is ever going to
01:18:08stop that but it's great.
01:18:10Great more variation from Wales.
01:18:12They've mixed up where they've attacked
01:18:14Australia, moving the point of attack. We're going to look
01:18:16at something. I've missed
01:18:18it, Rupert. Let's have a look.
01:18:20Was there someone in front of the ball
01:18:22perhaps? That's the
01:18:24only thing it could be.
01:18:26Obstruction maybe.
01:18:34We need to watch this
01:18:36ball transfer as it comes to the front. If Wales
01:18:38start a new mull
01:18:42there could be potential obstruction from
01:18:44Shunza.
01:18:50It'll be a technicality.
01:18:52That is for sure.
01:18:54If this is chalked off.
01:19:00Look at this.
01:19:02He looked pretty happy.
01:19:09Look at 4-17
01:19:11from Wales. Are they too far
01:19:13forwards in front of the ball?
01:19:15Shunza is at the front of that mull.
01:19:17We'll have a listen.
01:19:35No try
01:19:37is the decision.
01:19:41Warren Gatlin doesn't look impressed
01:19:43needless to say.
01:19:47Jonathan Humphreys is in the distance
01:19:49either.
01:19:51I think the positive
01:19:53from Wales though is they know if they get a penalty
01:19:55which can take them into mull
01:19:57territory.
01:19:59Even though there was an obstruction
01:20:01and it was the players, it was Tommy
01:20:03Raffer at seven
01:20:05and Shunza just in front of him
01:20:07forming a new mull to its obstruction.
01:20:09That mull has to almost roll round as opposed
01:20:11to what we've just seen.
01:20:13Shunza
01:20:15tries to make up for that mistry
01:20:17with the line-out
01:20:19turnover but Australia have it.
01:20:23It remains 18-13
01:20:25a double pump from over the top
01:20:27to the new man Charlie Kael
01:20:29for Australia at number 20. A big tackle
01:20:31on him from Josh Hathaway.
01:20:33Watch out for the Australian
01:20:35number 20 Charlie Kael. He has been
01:20:37outstanding in Super Rugby Pacific.
01:20:39A real athlete.
01:20:43It was a good tackle from Hathaway.
01:20:47Gordon sends it high.
01:20:49His box kicking has been a real tactical feature
01:20:51for Australia tonight. Hathaway
01:20:53can't hold on to the high ball. It's gone forward.
01:20:55Australia have it. McWright
01:20:59can play with advantage here. There is Kael again.
01:21:03Shunza
01:21:07just
01:21:09holding on to the scrum half there.
01:21:11You can't do that if you're involved in the ruck.
01:21:13He knows what he's done straight away.
01:21:15It's frustrating
01:21:17because you coach to make that ruck a mess.
01:21:19You make the tackle. You get up. You try and counter
01:21:21ruck through. When you're in the heat of the moment
01:21:23you're trying to fly through and you're looking towards the ground
01:21:25it's very difficult to have the awareness
01:21:27to know that it's a nine in front of you
01:21:29and not perhaps a forward player who's
01:21:31joining that ruck. I think Shunza
01:21:33realises when he puts his hands in it's probably the
01:21:35number nine. It's not an opposition
01:21:37second row where somebody can drive through. He tries
01:21:39to get through. He
01:21:41can take out the first player but he probably thinks that
01:21:43number nine is a forward attached. It's
01:21:45not. It's a nine. You can't touch him.
01:21:47You can see the frustration in his face.
01:21:51I think Jay Gordon was
01:21:53aware there was an opportunity
01:21:55to be awarded a penalty
01:21:57there as well. So here are Australia
01:21:59deep in Welsh territory.
01:22:01Here's McWright and
01:22:03Dungunu. Lovely quick ball
01:22:05to Paisani who's been lively.
01:22:07The inside centre.
01:22:15Their reload has been real quick
01:22:17at breakdown time tonight, Australia.
01:22:19Valentini.
01:22:23Fesler has a look. Open side.
01:22:25Comes the near side.
01:22:27Blythe helps out. Refelt
01:22:29leading turnovers in Six Nations
01:22:31earlier this year.
01:22:33Had a go there. Valentini
01:22:35again.
01:22:37Australia being very comfortable
01:22:39on the pick and go here. They're edging
01:22:41closer once more.
01:22:43McWright looking for the
01:22:45ball. Last ditch D here
01:22:47from Wales. Australia
01:22:49swing it out. The kick pass from
01:22:51Loloseo
01:22:53to Kellaway.
01:22:55It was almost
01:22:57a Tyrone Green for
01:22:59Harlequin's moment
01:23:01in the premiership this
01:23:03season.
01:23:05Looked like they had numbers there, Australia.
01:23:07They could perhaps have put it through their hands.
01:23:09Now Wales can come
01:23:11away with it.
01:23:17That could be
01:23:19a big game in the moment, Rupert, because
01:23:21if that scoreline even goes to 23-13
01:23:23now, without a conversion,
01:23:25that scoreline starts drifting
01:23:27away, but if Wales can get the next score
01:23:29and manage to get territory and get out of their own half,
01:23:31that could have been a big missed opportunity
01:23:33for Australia, where their pick and go looks so
01:23:35dominant, they look like they could have scored from more pick and
01:23:37goes as well.
01:23:39Brother Michael
01:23:41played for Samoa with the Rugby World
01:23:43Cup last year.
01:23:45Allen injured.
01:23:47Akiles missed the campaign for the Wallabies.
01:23:53Blythe, it was a no-look
01:23:55ball and Ellis Bevan
01:23:57had eyes on it and Wales had the ball
01:23:59back.
01:24:01And now Bevan
01:24:03puts that left boot into action
01:24:05and that was from his
01:24:07own half, so that will
01:24:09be a 50-22 for Wales.
01:24:11Brilliant stuff from the scrum half.
01:24:13Fantastic Ellis Bevan.
01:24:15He gets in the
01:24:17passing lane and he has a great
01:24:19blitz defence. This is the crossfield kick first.
01:24:21Just a metre too long,
01:24:23isn't it? It's great recognition.
01:24:25Like you said, we saw that at the start of the last season
01:24:27with Tyrone Green at Harlequin's.
01:24:29Ellis Bevan blocks off the pass and he
01:24:31knows that there's no-one at home because Wales
01:24:33have turned it over. He puts in the kick straight away.
01:24:3550-22 and now that moment's
01:24:37even bigger. What a massive
01:24:39turnover and a missed opportunity potentially
01:24:41from Australia. Huge swing
01:24:43and momentum right now.
01:24:47Daffod Jenkins lifted
01:24:49the ball.
01:24:51That was OK, says the referee.
01:24:53The referee was on to it.
01:24:55Bevan. A couple of mature
01:24:57moments from him in the
01:24:59last few minutes in just his second test
01:25:01match, the 24-year-old from
01:25:03Cardiff.
01:25:09What can a first receiver in midfield?
01:25:11He's got Grady with him.
01:25:15Bevan's there as Kelleway tries to
01:25:17Ben Thomas.
01:25:21Archie Griffin's there to help out.
01:25:23Here's the replacement loosehead.
01:25:25Mathias, hit by his opposite number
01:25:27Kylia.
01:25:29That's gone forward though as well
01:25:31and Fraser McWright's
01:25:33Valentini with a bit of help
01:25:35from the debutant
01:25:37Kylia doing the business there.
01:25:39Good defence from Australia. Good double shots
01:25:41wasn't it?
01:25:43Well here we go. It's
01:25:45Michael Liner
01:25:47who makes his test debut for
01:25:49Australia. He replaces Noah
01:25:51Lolicio. Another proud
01:25:53moment for the Liner
01:25:55family. Of course, brother
01:25:57Louis Big Bro made his
01:25:59test debut for Italy in the Six Nations
01:26:01and
01:26:03of course the Wallabies
01:26:05all-time points scorer in history
01:26:07Michael Liner will be watching on
01:26:09feeling very proud right now.
01:26:11I think people just assume
01:26:13that if you're an international or ex-international
01:26:15that if you have a boy you're just going to make it.
01:26:17You don't see it that often.
01:26:19There's not many times you get
01:26:21particularly great players like Liner
01:26:23to have two sons to come
01:26:25through and play international rugby.
01:26:27It's an exceptional feat really
01:26:29and congratulations to the Liner family
01:26:31and what an amazing achievement.
01:26:33Tate McDermott's out there who will play
01:26:35Scrum Half, former captain of this Wallaby team
01:26:37so you've got experience alongside
01:26:39the rookie Liner
01:26:41and Liam Williams
01:26:43has been replaced by
01:26:45Nick Tompkins
01:26:47so it'll be a bit of a
01:26:49reshuffle in the back line for Wales
01:26:51It'll be interesting to see
01:26:53how they shape up. I think Wales need
01:26:55that last
01:26:57attack and set showed
01:26:59perhaps the lack of punch they have
01:27:01in their carry compared to Australia
01:27:03contact metres is something you'll often refer to
01:27:05to show that dominance in your carry
01:27:07Australia would be significantly higher
01:27:09Wales were down in South Africa
01:27:11sometimes that's manufactured
01:27:13through shape and through finding space
01:27:15sometimes you just need those hard carries
01:27:17Australia have managed those very well
01:27:19from a defensive perspective and they fronted up
01:27:21very physically and very dominantly in defence
01:27:23and Wales have carried off nine
01:27:25So here's Tate McDermott, the new Scrum Half
01:27:29to Kylia
01:27:31big boy, 129kg
01:27:336'2
01:27:35and he's carried that
01:27:37into
01:27:39Archie Griffin
01:27:41who's come up with a big
01:27:43turnover for Wales
01:27:45speaking of rookies
01:27:51his first start for Wales
01:27:53here
01:27:57so you give
01:27:59an international side one metre separation
01:28:01where you're a little bit slow in support
01:28:03and attack to allow a player
01:28:05and Archie Griffin in that case
01:28:07does really well to get over the ball
01:28:09this is a big moment for Wales now
01:28:11big decision to be made
01:28:13the ball has been going well
01:28:153 point opportunity, did you take 18-16
01:28:17or did you go to the corner
01:28:19Ben Thomas looks like he's shaping up for a 3 pointer
01:28:21that surprises me after what's happened
01:28:23in the first half
01:28:25it's confidence though from him isn't it
01:28:27because it's not a gimme kick
01:28:29it's
01:28:31considerable distance out on the angle
01:28:33it's the smile from
01:28:35coach Gatlin
01:28:37maybe the message
01:28:39didn't get through, who knows
01:28:41there's no right call
01:28:43the players have a feel on the ground
01:28:45whether they want to go for the corner
01:28:47or whether they feel they need to take the 3 and squeeze
01:28:49Australia, so the players will only know
01:28:51so they have to make that call, if they think that's the right
01:28:53decision, it's the right decision
01:28:57looking for his third successful kick
01:28:59of the evening, Ben Thomas
01:29:01he has
01:29:03gone in off
01:29:05the left hand upright, that'll do
01:29:07that will do
01:29:09for Wales
01:29:112 point ball game
01:29:13in Sydney, good kick from Ben Thomas
01:29:27well if you take the option of posts
01:29:29you've got to make sure you nail it, he's done
01:29:31exactly that
01:29:33another change for Australia, Billy Pollard
01:29:35is out there at hook of Matt Fesler
01:29:39and Corey Hill
01:29:41is on the field as well for Dafford Jenkins
01:29:43Corey Hill is playing
01:29:45in the 4th division
01:29:47in Japan at the moment
01:29:49his first selection for
01:29:51a few years, I mentioned a reshuffle with
01:29:53Liam Williams going off
01:29:55Mason Grady out on the wing where he plays
01:29:57a lot of club rugby
01:29:59for Cardiff
01:30:01as Nick Tompkins goes into
01:30:03inside
01:30:05centre
01:30:07here he is in the 23 shirt Tompkins
01:30:09here's Tom Liner
01:30:11short ball to Tom Wright
01:30:13but he's knocked it on
01:30:17Wales kick it ahead but out on the full
01:30:19so
01:30:21should go back
01:30:23for the Wales scrum here who went forward
01:30:25well that stays
01:30:27in play, Australia in a bit of trouble there
01:30:29another good defensive
01:30:31set from Wales, force in those unforced
01:30:33errors, it looks unforced
01:30:35but Tompkins as well again to get up
01:30:37big defensive player for Wales Tompkins
01:30:39in years gone by, really good
01:30:41understanding, very aggressive
01:30:43in that area of his game
01:30:45forces the turnover
01:30:49just under
01:30:5136,000 in the house tonight in Sydney
01:30:53offload from Valentini, it was intended for
01:30:55Tate McDermott
01:30:59so again Australia
01:31:01lose possession
01:31:03it's clarification because Wales kicked the ball
01:31:05forward, they lose the advantage for the
01:31:07knock on from Tom Wright
01:31:11Australia threw the line out but no bother
01:31:13in the end for Wales, they got the ball back
01:31:15here's Bevan who's having a very good
01:31:17game this evening
01:31:19Tom Liner
01:31:21brings it down for Australia
01:31:23he was hit by
01:31:25big 6 foot 5 Mason Grady
01:31:27and here's big 6 foot 5 Rob Valentini
01:31:31mentioned he played every test match for
01:31:33Australia last year, now Charlie Cale
01:31:37Charlie Cale has actually
01:31:39come on for the captain, Liam Wright
01:31:43McCoy Hills in trouble, just this side
01:31:45of the ruck for Wales, number 19, clenching his arm
01:31:47off that big carry from Valentini
01:31:49deep kick from
01:31:51Australia
01:31:53well fielded by Bevan and Hathaway
01:31:55long ball down to
01:31:57Tom Liner
01:31:59now Tom Wright
01:32:01he's been brilliant for the Brumbies in Super Rugby
01:32:03Pacific, he's been making
01:32:05line breaks all season long
01:32:07and here he goes, what a score
01:32:09Tom Wright
01:32:11Tom Wright
01:32:17a brilliant try
01:32:19in transition from Australia
01:32:21it was Tom Liner
01:32:23and then it was Tom Wright
01:32:25who took over, brilliant try
01:32:29that's the kind of rugby we used to see
01:32:31from Australia, it's a great try
01:32:33look at Wales looking a little bit narrow on kick chase
01:32:35he just wins his one on one
01:32:37battle with Tompkins, just steps to his
01:32:39feet, I think Tompkins is slightly weary of
01:32:41Kelleway, coming back in
01:32:43on that switch, but Tom Wright
01:32:45does so well
01:32:47great acceleration over 10 metres, just to get on the
01:32:49outside of Tompkins, wins that 1v1
01:32:51and that was it, once you got that
01:32:53line break you always felt the covering defence, it was
01:32:55two bigger apps for Grady there, that covering
01:32:57defence, so difficult to stop with all the
01:32:59momentum as with Wright in that situation
01:33:01excellent try from Australia
01:33:05this is a player that Eddie Jones didn't
01:33:07for the World Cup last year, if you can
01:33:09believe it
01:33:11on that kind of finishing ability
01:33:13he was a former rugby league player with
01:33:15the Manly Sea Eagles in NRL
01:33:17there's been a bit of talk about his future actually
01:33:19so much
01:33:23competition for players across
01:33:25codes in Australia, but what a try that is
01:33:27and Tom Liner with his first
01:33:29points for
01:33:31Australia
01:33:33a chip off the old block
01:33:35and Australia
01:33:37looking good in Sydney
01:33:39I think this is the balance that Joe
01:33:41Schmidt will want to find in his Australia
01:33:43team, yes he wants to maybe add some
01:33:45perhaps be a little bit more pragmatic in
01:33:47some of their play, but you do not want to take
01:33:49away that natural
01:33:51intuitive counter attack
01:33:53sort of optimism
01:33:55that they often have, but they will go from
01:33:57inside their own half, you want to have a nice combination
01:33:59of the two, to strike when the time is right
01:34:01and they pick their moment brilliantly
01:34:03there
01:34:05another story of this game is
01:34:07all these debutantes
01:34:09or players with just one or two caps
01:34:11how good they've been on
01:34:13both sides, Sam, in this
01:34:15test match, you look at that conversion from
01:34:17Tom Liner, like he's been
01:34:19doing it for years, and here he is
01:34:21clearing
01:34:23the ball up to Hathaway
01:34:25intending to keep it in field, trusting
01:34:27their defence Australia, Nick Tompkins
01:34:29hasn't been at his very best
01:34:31for Wales and international rugby
01:34:33in recent times
01:34:35off the bench
01:34:39looking to make a difference, now Ben Thomas is going to
01:34:41chip it over the top, it was intended for Hathaway, Rio
01:34:43dies on the chase as well
01:34:45well fielded by
01:34:47Billy Pollard, the Brumby
01:34:49the replacement hooker, just his second cap
01:34:55and here's Isaac Kalia
01:35:0125-16
01:35:05inside the final 10 minutes here
01:35:07McDermott
01:35:11picks it, but Wales have the ball
01:35:13and an opportunity now for Hathaway, ball in
01:35:15two hands, couple of steps, well read
01:35:17by Josh Fluke
01:35:19good hands as well from Dowie-Lake
01:35:21passes behind him
01:35:25so it feels like Wales need
01:35:27to score next, and need to
01:35:29score pretty quickly, here's Owen Watkin
01:35:37Chinza
01:35:41double tackle on him
01:35:43now Australia were at the counter
01:35:45Ruck
01:35:47Fraser McWright who's a
01:35:49fine jackler for the Reds
01:35:51in Australia, didn't come away with it there
01:35:53Thomas
01:35:57Thomas out the back to Wainwright, now
01:35:59Tompkins
01:36:01Watkin to Grady
01:36:03good tackle, Andrew Kelleway
01:36:05put him over the sideline
01:36:07textbook
01:36:09bootlace stuff from Andrew Kelleway
01:36:11it's good hustle
01:36:13at the break down for Australia to slow it down
01:36:15and I think if Grady can have his time again, probably
01:36:17just want to try and stay in field
01:36:19to try and build the phases
01:36:23as well, Kelleway to usher him towards that
01:36:25touchline to get the line now back for
01:36:27Australia, but Wales need to really try and
01:36:29stay in touch there, try and
01:36:31put more pressure on Australia
01:36:33but finding it difficult in their attacking
01:36:35phases, Wales to really stretch
01:36:37this Australian defence
01:36:39all changes for Wales
01:36:41the captain Lakes leaving the field
01:36:45Kieran Hart, he's on for Ellis Devon
01:36:47and Sam Costolo has replaced
01:36:49Ben Thomas at fly half
01:36:51as the replacement hooker Evan Lloyd
01:36:53with his first touch, now Tompkins
01:36:55drifts inside
01:36:57line-up
01:36:59Australia look for the steal
01:37:01Kelleway does get around doesn't he, the right
01:37:03winger, now Hathaway
01:37:05to Grady who's switched wings
01:37:09having been put over the sideline by Kelleway
01:37:11over on the far side
01:37:13Corey Hill there, he's shaken
01:37:15off that knot, carries it forward
01:37:17out the back Tompkins, this is
01:37:19good from Wales, here's Dyer
01:37:21to Wainwright, drifts inside
01:37:23beats one Kelleway
01:37:25seven minutes to go
01:37:27in Sydney
01:37:2925-16 Australia lead
01:37:31Watkin, lovely
01:37:33step, can't get away from the
01:37:35second, here's Sam Costolo
01:37:37indoors to riffle, but he's
01:37:39absolutely nailed by Hunter Paisani
01:37:49Costolo
01:37:51Mathias
01:37:55going through the phases here Wales
01:37:57Australia defence holding firm for now
01:38:01another good tackle there from Tom Liner
01:38:05not a big man
01:38:07Tom Liner but
01:38:09just as we saw with Marcus Smith
01:38:11for England this morning
01:38:13he stands up on
01:38:15defence, Evan Lloyd
01:38:19Hardy
01:38:21Tompkins
01:38:23Costolo
01:38:25Watkin
01:38:27another bootlace tackle from Liner
01:38:31at pace
01:38:33is Wainwright
01:38:35Hardy, Costolo
01:38:37chips over the top, it's for Hathaway
01:38:39Hathaway can't quite reel
01:38:41it in
01:38:45feels his arm was taken
01:38:47it's a knock on in goal
01:38:49they're calling it a knock on in goal
01:38:51I love the energy that Costolo
01:38:53has brought and the shape to Wales' attack
01:38:55that's by far Wales'
01:38:57best attack in shape in this
01:38:59game, they're not beating Australia
01:39:01for power when they carry off nine, but on that
01:39:03set they've got runners off ten
01:39:05they're playing balls out the back
01:39:07much more decoy runners
01:39:09and they're beating Australia there through deception
01:39:11much better attacking set from Wales
01:39:13getting into shape nice and early
01:39:15didn't score, but big positive signs
01:39:17there from attack from Wales
01:39:19well Archie Griffin has played
01:39:2174 minutes at tight
01:39:23hip prop for Wales, replaced by Harry
01:39:25O'Connor
01:39:27the Scarlet
01:39:29time ticking away for Wales
01:39:31and a massive hit
01:39:33coming in
01:39:35it was blithe
01:39:37for Australia
01:39:39you can hear the impact
01:39:41through the effects mics
01:39:43on that one
01:39:47five minutes to go
01:39:4925
01:39:5116
01:39:55Kieran Hardy
01:39:57Costolo, Watkin
01:39:59little stutter step, Valentini's up to it
01:40:03Costolo
01:40:05again, Hatfield, it's in the hands of James
01:40:07both of them
01:40:09denied a try earlier
01:40:11from the line out drive
01:40:13Matthias again
01:40:15he's been good off the bench, Gensley
01:40:17Matthias
01:40:19heavy tackle coming in
01:40:21on Tompkins
01:40:27Chris
01:40:29Chinza to Dyer
01:40:31he's hit hard by Valentini, that's not
01:40:33a fair fight between those two
01:40:35but Wales get the penalty
01:40:41off feet, a breakdown
01:40:43is the call
01:40:45he's thrown his weight
01:40:47around a bit, Valentini, this last 10 minutes
01:40:49isn't he? Costolo taking the
01:40:51ball right to the line and getting some shots
01:40:53on him
01:40:55just comes through there, needs to do better
01:40:57to stay on his feet, using his hands there
01:40:59you can see he is definitely coming off, he can't argue with that
01:41:03but again it comes from much
01:41:05better attacking shape from Wales, they're looking
01:41:07so much better in attack in this
01:41:09last 10 minutes, the bench has brought
01:41:11some good energy
01:41:13another debut for Australia, Dylan Peach
01:41:15becomes the 15th indigenous Australian to
01:41:17play for the Wallabies and they've
01:41:19got the ball from the line out Australia
01:41:21here is Peach with his first touch
01:41:23former Aussie 7 star, went to the
01:41:25Olympic Games in Tokyo
01:41:31I think that's been Wales'
01:41:33Achilles heel this game, isn't it?
01:41:35set pieces, let them down a little bit, first half
01:41:37Scrum, another
01:41:39under throw, it was too low, too easy
01:41:41for Australia to get
01:41:43their hands on it and be able to compete
01:41:45if Wales won
01:41:47just a few more line outs they'd be able
01:41:49to exert so much more pressure
01:41:51via attack against Australia
01:41:53and they've got
01:41:55another penalty due Australia
01:41:57and it's Fraser
01:41:59McWright who wins
01:42:01the applause
01:42:03for his work there
01:42:07does well to get over
01:42:09the ball doesn't he
01:42:11might not have a load of caps to his name
01:42:13but he's been around this Australia squad for a while
01:42:15he's probably unlucky that he's had
01:42:17probably a couple of generational open side flankers
01:42:19to also learn off as well
01:42:21but Wales just a little bit
01:42:23slow in support, he does well to stay in that fight
01:42:27he was billed as the new Michael Hooper
01:42:29who carried the match ball out on the field
01:42:33they had a kick off here
01:42:35Joe Schmidt with a two score lead
01:42:37here and two minutes to go
01:42:41we'll be looking for his players to see
01:42:43this one out and start
01:42:45his reign as head coach of
01:42:47Australia with a win
01:42:49they won just two of nine test
01:42:51matches in 2023
01:42:53against Georgia and Portugal at the World
01:42:55Cup did Australia
01:42:57Australia
01:43:03Big tackle still coming in
01:43:05Peach and Paisani
01:43:09Costello to Hathaway
01:43:11he'll remember this evening
01:43:13no matter the result his first
01:43:15test match for Wales is Corey
01:43:17Hill his first
01:43:19selection in three years
01:43:23they got a penalty here and they can do no more
01:43:25go quickly and that's exactly what Hardy does
01:43:27pops it up off the deck to
01:43:29Evan Lloyd
01:43:31Evan Lloyd runs slightly high into contact
01:43:33and Valentini stops him
01:43:35Hathaway comes away from
01:43:37that breakdown clutching a wrist or a hand
01:43:39or something
01:43:41Tompkins
01:43:45final minute now
01:43:49Watkin
01:43:51Tompkins
01:43:53runs it forward for Wales
01:43:55they just haven't been able to find the line breaks this evening
01:43:57that was the issue for them against South Africa
01:43:59two weeks ago also in the six
01:44:01nations as well
01:44:03Sam you've mentioned the set piece
01:44:05issues also but
01:44:07just haven't been able to
01:44:09find a way through
01:44:11with the ball in hand for this
01:44:13Australian defensive line
01:44:15tonight
01:44:17he's had to switch from inside center
01:44:19wink counter-up from the Wallabies Charlie Kyle and I was hacked on by
01:44:25Tate McDermott goes over the sideline great defensive effort from Australia
01:44:31you know even though it's the 79th minute of the game Wales can't win
01:44:36they're still counter-up and it's backs as well we're not looking at forward
01:44:39their backs got a huge appetite to turn that ball over they've had a great
01:44:43defensive outside we know they love to attack they've had a huge appetite
01:44:47defence Australia this evening well Wallaby fans have had to watch on
01:44:54through gritted teeth in recent times as their national team have struggled on
01:45:01the big stage Eddie Jones long gone Joe Schmidt now
01:45:06taken over and yeah some smiles on faces of Australian rugby supporters much
01:45:14needed and there's Aaron Wainwright not the way he wanted his 50th test match to
01:45:18finish for Wales he limps over the sideline we hope he's okay before we
01:45:22head to Melbourne for the second sets of the series next Saturday looks like
01:45:29Hathaway's okay having come away from that previous breakdown with a sore hand
01:45:36but Australia have turned the ball over in contact and that will bring this one
01:45:41to a close the Wallaby revival is underway Joe Schmitz has won his first
01:45:51test match as head coach of Australia Wales had their moments but it's
01:45:57handshakes all round for the Australian coaching staff they start this to test
01:46:03series with a win in Sydney a place they hadn't won on this ground for a decade
01:46:12seven players on debut for Australia and a new captain as well Liam Wright has
01:46:20led them to a first win in charge Wales will come again in the second test they
01:46:28had their bright moment
