00:00But what an opportunity for England today to push on and continue the momentum Steve
00:05Borthwick and his men are building.
00:07Now we're talking in the studio how key a positive start, a physical start is for the
00:11England side.
00:12A bit of a new look New Zealand team as well, let's see how they get on today then and hand
00:17you to your commentary team, David Flattman and Miles Harrison, good morning.
00:24Thank you Anna, good morning everyone, England back in all black country for the first time
00:30in 10 years.
00:31The New Zealand public ready for this then?
00:34We are all ready for this.
00:37In the Six Nations and on the recent stopover in Japan, England showing genuine promise
00:44but this is a step into the unknown for the vast majority of them.
00:49Not for Joe Marler, one of the vice captains, only named from the 2014 tour, still here
00:56for England.
00:57Of course captain Jamie George was here with the British and Irish Lions in 2017, along
01:03with Mauro Atoje and in the back row we've got Chandler Cunningham South, Harlequin's
01:10player of course, so too Marcus Smith, the backs unchanged.
01:16He has the chance to steer England from the pivotal position of fly half with Henry Slade
01:21on the back of a superb domestic season in that England back line as well.
01:26On the bench there will be debuts for Finn Baxter and Ollie Sleighthom, not for Dan
01:33Cole who will win his 114th cap should he come onto the field.
01:41First run awaits then for New Zealand under their new coach Scott Robertson and they are
01:46led by a Barrett.
01:48Scott the second row, his 70th cap and for him the ultimate honour, he's done it once
01:54before against Fiji in 2021 but now it's full time and in the back row Dalton Papiali'i,
02:00he has the famous number seven jersey with Sam Cain calling it a day internationally
02:06at the end of the year and now injured as well.
02:08Damian McKenzie has the famous New Zealand number 10, a chance for him to show his skills
02:13just like England's Marcus Smith.
02:18And in the full back position it's Stephen Perifetta, he can also play 10 and his super
02:26rugby form has been rewarded with a start at 15 and that selection means Bowden Barrett
02:34has to be content with the bench, he and Anton Leonard-Brown, 193 caps between them.
02:44These are special nights, test matches under the lights in Kiwiland, they feel different,
02:52they look different, they sound different but amidst all of the unfamiliar Steve Borthwick
02:59wants his team to play big, be smart and tough whatever they encounter over the next two
03:06weeks to keep believing in themselves and to show the whole of New Zealand just what
03:13they can do and who they are.
03:18These are the days, Miles, these are the nights that these guys work so hard towards hugely
03:25exciting, thrilling, dare we say it, an England team with a bit of momentum coming into this
03:30game, yes as underdogs because the games in New Zealand, the games in Dunedin, everyone's
03:34underdogs here who visits but they're in form.
03:38New Zealand, well we don't quite know yet do we, new boss, new captain, slightly new
03:43look certainly at fullback Bowden Barrett on the bench, we're in the unusual position
03:47of not quite knowing what to expect.
03:50We expect brilliance, there's a good chance that's what will be delivered and there is
03:53every chance, Miles, that this could be, it could be one of the great test matches.
03:59New captain and a totally new look in their kit, refreshed kit, a bit retro with a large
04:04white collar but that jersey, whatever form it takes, is always essentially the same,
04:12a symbol of a nation let alone a sport in that nation.
04:23Dunedin has been dry and crisp by day, now under the roof the weather becomes irrelevant
04:31but the noise does not.
04:35The country's most southerly major test venue and many argue the most atmospheric too.
04:47Part of what England are going to have to do is to master the environment, I think the
04:52guys in the studio will bang right pre-match, I think the pressure is on New Zealand, they're
04:56favourites, there is a new look, they're in a ground at which they've never lost to
05:00England, they're outright favourites against a team who pose a lot of threats, a lot of
05:07threats, this first 15-20 minutes is going to be very, very gripping indeed.
05:15Of course first the anthems, God defend New Zealand, God save the King.
05:21England and New Zealand, National Anthem performed by Jaya.
05:38God save our gracious King, Long live our noble King,
05:48God save the King.
05:53Send him victorious, happy and glorious,
06:03Long to reign over us, God save the King.
06:18God save the King.
06:48God of nations, and thy people,
07:13God of nations, at thy feet, In the cause of love we plead,
07:25Hear our voices, we entreat, God defend our free land.
07:36God bless Syfyx, triple star, From the shafts of strife and war,
07:47Make her praises heard out far, God defend New Zealand.
08:01Young Jaya and Sophie Morris certainly setting the tone, and as New Zealand prepare to perform
08:11their first Haka of 2024, perhaps time to mention again the passing of a true coaching legend in
08:18England, Jack Rau. Jack guided Barth through their glory years back in the day of course,
08:24and took him to the England job in the mid-90s.
08:27He met the Haka in the World Cup semi-final of 1995.
08:34He'd have loved this challenge being set by New Zealand again today. Some fine tributes have been
08:40made, not least by Steve Borthwick who played at Bath when Jack was there.
10:26Oh
10:46have some of that, have some of that, absolutely nothing like it.
10:51Love watching it, love watching it since I was a little boy, and I'll tell you what,
10:56some of all those England players, that's how you start a game of rugby.
11:03And England with only two victories before on New Zealand soil, 1973-2003.
11:11Facing this in 2024,
11:20and the referee Nika Amashukele of Georgia, Nick Berry who will take charge of next weekend's
11:27second test in Auckland, is an assistant today with fellow Australian Jordan Way,
11:33Eric Gauzin of France is the television match official.
11:39It will always be a sizable task for any team traveling here,
11:45but it is a period of change for the All Blacks both on and off the pitch.
11:50It's their first hit out for seven months.
11:53Are these factors that might just open the door a little wider than normal for England?
12:00Ireland won the series here two years ago.
12:04Can this England play big enough yet to do the same? We are about to find out.
12:29And it's Damian McKenzie who gets the match underway,
12:35and Alex Mitchell, the England strum half, who replies.
12:46TJ Peronara, his experience brought back in, and it finds its way early to Ioanni and Talair.
12:53But good work from England.
13:01In goes Underhill, out from Furback, you'll see him step into the fly half.
13:08But that one goes through the hands of Freeman, and he gives an early chance for
13:12the All Blacks here to work the blindside. Flag is up as Finau is put into touch.
13:18England needed to scramble, and they did well there. They did.
13:21Marcus Smith did well. That's a good shot on a big man in Finau.
13:25Really good defensive work from England to force this turnover as New Zealand look keen,
13:30really keen to shift that ball wide and get outside that England blitz defence.
13:33That was a poor pass. Poor old Tommy Freeman didn't want that as his first touch
13:38in Dunedin, I can tell you that. But England recover.
13:43England's good for Jamie George.
13:45Yep, long-run partnership.
13:53Up again from Mitchell, taken by McKenzie, who gets this chance at 10, his desired position.
14:00So to fullback, Perrafetta, but that's where he starts today,
14:04and he'll just be happy to be in this New Zealand team. Cross-field kick is interesting.
14:08A bit of variety. New Zealand were only a couple of minutes in, but they tried a couple of ways to
14:17just make England's wide defence. As it narrows up, think twice. They maybe want to just
14:23subconsciously try and grow those gaps between England defenders, try and take a bit of line
14:27speed out by going deep and around or kicking over the top. Just force England to think defensively.
14:32England chop the line out, 2-4. Well won by George Martin and then it's Ben Earl in midfield.
14:45Mitchell's boot again.
14:48Will Stewart stands firm. Mike Mahler, two props coming in from the game against Japan.
14:57And now Jürgen.
15:00And Paul Bensche and Devon Rodd moving out of the matchday squad.
15:08England don't look too keen to do much but kick from their own half today.
15:13He's going to be doing a lot of defensive work. They keep giving England the ball. England keep
15:17punting it long over the top, but a kicking game can be exciting, it can be clever, it can apply pressure.
15:27Now the throw was accurate. The three teams, there's no knock on initially, but then they're well strung.
15:33England strung half-Mitchell.
15:39Really good line-out, Guy from New Zealand. Samipeni, Finau at the back. Got his arm in there.
15:47Yes, there is contact with a hand but he's on the ball there. I think to penalise that
15:51would be a bit rough. The throw was decent, drill was decent from England.
15:57Usually, 95% of the time that's ball one and we're away, but that's good deed from New Zealand.
16:02Scott Robinson said pre-match, our set-piece is good. I used to hate coaches saying that because
16:06it put a bit of pressure on you, but he might be right, we'll find out now. See how Big Joe deals
16:12with Tyrone Lomax. The man Kyle Sinclair pre-match described as one of the four tight heads in world rugby.
16:20Crouch.
16:26Used to be a Highlander, Lomax. Back on familiar turf.
16:34Ethan De Groot, the loose head, is a Highlander, the only one in the squad
16:38playing at home, but both of them felt the force there as England win a strong penalty.
16:43That man, Joe Marler, a judge should have done nothing wrong. Tyrone Lomax penalised that man,
16:54effectively going in too low, causing the scrum to collapse. Going in underneath Joe Marler,
17:01he extends underneath him, doesn't he?
17:06There's low and there's too low. His boots don't slip, he's not losing traction, but really
17:12his forehead's aiming between Joe Marler's knees there, and it's not Joe Marler's job to hold him
17:17up, it's not his job. He's his own man, he should hold himself up, that's a good call. And it's the
17:22referee's job to call it as he sees it, and he's gone straight to the penalty there. May have been
17:26tempted some by a possible reset early on in the game, no, says the Georgian referee. Penalty.
17:32Yeah, it's good, crack on. Tyrone Lomax wants to go low on Joe Marler, because if he presents
17:37himself big and high, Joe is so strong that he'll fold him back over himself. Really it was defensive
17:43scrummaging from Tyrone Lomax, I'd expect to see him come up a few inches in terms of height as
17:48the game goes on. Smith the kicker, but not the three points.
17:56Hopefully for his sake, not very, but at this level you'd probably call that a sitter, wouldn't you normally?
18:15Chance to reward the back, and in particular the front row goes
18:20missing there for England, but George Furback runs it back, and Norhampton fall back.
18:27And it's Henry Slade that pings around, taken down by the highly experienced Ardi Sabir.
18:33Back with England again, and off goes Mitchell. There's a lot of space out there, and he's sinking it.
18:38Bernal straightens, back it goes to Mitchell. That's good hands between the two, and Mitchell,
18:44as he so often does, looks lively, but well contested by the Aublacks
18:48at the breakdown. And Jordie Ballot has a chance to find Perrafetta, several reeses out there.
18:57And the ball is there, England will see it. Perranara does as well. Back from Cody Taylor
19:03to McKenzie, Slade was drawn up, fair reversal, referee's going to blow. Whistle's gone.
19:12There's just so much high quality work going on out there at the moment.
19:17Oli Lawrence, can he at the breakdown? Bernal changing his line before contact, so he doesn't
19:22get slammed behind the gain line. Henry Slade's defensive read, causing all sorts of problems.
19:28Yeah, came off his fingers, a knock on, looks like a good call. Loads of pressure, great read from
19:33England. Cody Taylor's work on the floor at the breakdown, when England look to be flying.
19:40Super high-end stuff. Intensity there from Slade, he did just knock on by,
19:46the looks of it on that replay, it looked like it in real time, and
19:51a referee right to call it. Also good body language from Faye Woboso as he came back
19:57there, just the interaction with McKenzie looked like he totally and utterly belonged.
20:04Manny Faye Woboso might only have a couple of caps, four caps, he is a handful already.
20:11He was a handful from touch number one, cap number one.
20:16Hold that, hold, good job there. What happens at the scrum, oh this time the referee decides it's a
20:21bit of both. Once it played and McKenzie does do that. Well I thought then, we don't need to pick
20:28at every scrum, I thought then New Zealand going forward a bit there, they were moving forward.
20:38As the ref was saying, the ball was there to play, so let's play.
20:40Yeah, but you're going down.
20:44Forward's all right, but you've got to stay up says ref.
20:52Oh dear. Advantage.
20:55Right, we had a not straight option, option.
21:03Would you like a technical analysis of that line-up?
21:06I don't think I have one. You've got one of the best, if not the best throwing hooker
21:10in the world game, he's right up there. That's a mucky old drill.
21:15I think China Cunningham South may have been supposed bearings, he doesn't like those.
21:23Well if it was darts, it was a bounce out, wasn't it?
21:28Almost back onto the foot on the hockey.
21:36Just New Zealand will be keen here to get in, get the ball away. They've just created a picture
21:41that aren't the first couple of scrums to the referee, that they're a bit too low to the ground,
21:45they're hitting the deck a bit too easily, they want to correct that.
21:49No heroics needed, just nice solid platform that stays up.
21:56Didn't set up too square that scrum, De Groot's coming through, standing up, but
22:01there's pressure from New Zealand this time.
22:05Answer back and they're delighted with it. Take it all back, heroics needed.
22:12I wondered about that man there, Ethan De Groot, he wasn't running so much around the outside,
22:16but he was standing up underneath the right arm of Will Stewart, the England tighthead.
22:22He wasn't going through Will Stewart, if Will Stewart could have ripped through there,
22:25he would have left Ethan De Groot behind and it would have looked bad for New Zealand,
22:28but Tyrell Lomax and Cody Taylor, the two and three for New Zealand were massively strong
22:34and followed De Groot through then. If you look on this loose head side, Ethan De Groot,
22:39look he comes up, he's not actually allowed to do that, he's not allowed to do that.
22:44Luckily for him, his mates are piling through, Joe Marlow and Jamie George under a load of pressure,
22:49don't say that too often, but he'll want to stay a bit lower De Groot,
22:53he'll get pinged for that at some point. That would have been an assistant call
22:57on the far side to the referee anyway, won't dwell on it, because here's Dalton Papioli.
23:05And England somehow, and George very much part of it,
23:10just calls the knock on at close quarters, and we'll have a chance to clear here.
23:18New Zealand really keen to make those breakdowns quick,
23:22good shot for Faye Wibosa on Dalton Papioli isn't it, but Papioli doesn't get knocked backwards,
23:26he still makes a yard, big strong man, it's just a straight boot, it's his mate's boot.
23:31It knocks the ball on for Adi Sevilla.
23:34After set we've been all right, we're defenders, we've been stable, we had a gap.
23:38They're keen to get that ball up and away, up and away, something Aaron Smith, the now retired
23:44legendary scrum half New Zealand, was very very good at, as soon as that ball hit the grass it
23:49was gone if it was available, nightmare to play against, a bit of a let off for England that.
23:55And Smith gone, Ken Roy guard, obviously part of the World Cup squad, he's injured at the moment,
24:02TJ Perenar the starter, and Vinny Christie on the bench here, a superb Super Rugby Pacific final.
24:09We're just pre-engaged, we're too close all right, we're coming in too close,
24:12both of you coming too close, this side particularly, we're coming too close all right.
24:20Both sides coming too close on that side, this side is fine,
24:24that's how it's run it off. Teams taking in the instructions. Well everyone's getting close
24:29because they don't want their opposite numbers to get in decent positions where they become
24:33immovable, so Ethan de Groot, it's England's put in, he doesn't want Will Stewart to get in a nice
24:37comfy position, he's the best part of 140 kilos, once he gets in a nice position where he wants
24:43to be, you ain't budging him, so he wants to just catch him just before he gets there, so everyone's
24:47getting a bit edgy, nice free kick, free kick, he's on the move, too much pressure coming in,
25:00yeah too much weight, stable up to the side please, I think that's a good call as well,
25:07Tyrell Lomax has been pinged for that I think, but on this side Will Stewart looked to be an
25:13absolutely full chap, resisting the weight then before the ball had come in, New Zealand have got
25:17to keep that about 90% and put the hammer down when the ball comes in just a bit too early then.
25:26Slow clears, free kick, so New Zealand ball at the line out, full straight arm penalty,
25:35I'm pretty happy that was straight enough and now New Zealand try and get the
25:39ball rolling, here's Cody Taylor, 86 cap for him, he took time off after the World Cup for a
25:46proper rest, he should be raring to go here, Ethan DeGroote
25:50was sent off at the World Cup, you probably remember Jordie Barrett,
25:57one of the three brothers, Bowden on the bench today, Mackenzie,
26:01one of the reasons why, there's Taylor again,
26:09Peronara,
26:13referee has given a penalty to New Zealand here, it's Captain Scott Barrett back to Peronara,
26:21Morane, Peronara again, little step for Mackenzie, a lovely pass to find Severise,
26:28he shimmies away from the Saintsman, Furbank and Freeman, still an advantage, still a free play,
26:37up comes Mitchell, does it make his tackle though, today a good strength and here's Turpulatu,
26:45Perifetta, inside the England 22 now, that's George Furbank all right, then he got in the way,
26:55the referee's given another penalty for that,
27:00Papaliti gets it back to Peronara, Turpulatu carries, Sam Underhill with a tackle,
27:06tries to roll away sort of, trying to slow it down, in fact Mackenzie's cross ball kick is right on it
27:12and Severise is in for the first try,
27:16a very well constructed score, for the first time in the match, the All Blacks were fluid,
27:28they were connected and they're on the ball,
27:35Damian George steps out of line a little bit there, gets ahead of Joe Marler, New Zealand
27:39make a bit of ground, England on the back foot, just a bit, they're just back on their heels,
27:44great variety from Damian Mackenzie, leading up to that in attack, playing the longest advantage
27:50in the history of sport, that is elite test match rugby from New Zealand, yes they had the advantage
27:56but they didn't do anything silly, didn't take it as a free shot, they said this is a chance to get
28:00through a load of phases, England actually largely defended really well, the last nine or ten phases,
28:06mostly some big shots, good organization, good numbers, New Zealand never stopped, quick ball,
28:11quick ball, threatening players, nice variety from Mackenzie, really, really nicely constructed
28:18try, that was about relentlessness, Severise has been smiling all week, it's his first test since
28:262022, it is ACL for the Crusaders, Riku Ioane actually caused the injury, they were together
28:33at the news conference, Ruiz reminded Ioane of that fact, with a smile, but the top try score
28:41in this season's super rugby competition, scores again for New Zealand, Damian Mackenzie can't add
28:48the extra two points, like Marcus Smith, fails with his first attempt, but this was no failure,
28:55it was a fine try, a fine try, a lovely finish in the end, England narrowed up a bit,
29:01Damian Mackenzie either saw it himself or was told from out wide, there's space out here mate,
29:06the ball was on a sixpence for Severise, Finn Baxter's already on, something's happened to Joe Marlott
29:17so a debut for Finn Baxter, the apprentice to Marlott if you like, at club level, he replaces him
29:25very early on in the action here, not reached the midway point of the first half yet
29:40Toze trying to make himself big on the fringe there,
29:43but Teranara does well to angle that and get excellent distance
29:47another player returning to the all-black side, he ruptured his Achilles against England in the
29:572022 game at Twickenham, there is Finn Baxter, what a day for him, he's had a brilliant season
30:05for Harlequins, taken over actually his first choice largely from Joe Marlott, Harlequins
30:09this is a different kettle of fish, obviously Tyrell Lomax, a big challenge for him at scrum time
30:16fascinating to watch, good on him, congratulations Finn
30:27Mitchell's boot again, McKenzie
30:33he doesn't lack confidence and he's certainly into his stride now as Ethan de Groot
30:46there's Marcus Smith
30:51and Furbank runs it back
30:55he's such a good picker of lines, so too Mitchell, and Mitchell puts his foot down there,
31:00Ferragosso, just got his leg tangled up, picked up by Baxter, ball didn't go forward
31:05now it's England's turn to be inside the opposition 22, good hands there from Smith on to Earle
31:11back goes Mitchell, he needed to get there the scrum half and did, Smith with a little chip
31:15perhaps wanted more of an angle there, still might break for Henry Slade, but
31:20Damian McKenzie is back to put it down, was always favourite because of the angle on the kick
31:28really nice attack from England, got New Zealand scrambling, Damian McKenzie
31:32very nicely positioned, TJ Peronara there just saying lads calm down, calm down, frenetic stuff
31:39from England, Alex Mitchell super sharp and yeah, Feywaboso just caught an all-black boot didn't he
31:45otherwise, it was trouble
31:55hearing from the sideline and Ricky Swinell that his injury to Marley was hobbling around
32:05here's Ollie Lawrence, again it's meant for Feywaboso, McKenzie's not going to get much time here
32:11out he goes, England will have another chance to attack, we haven't seen
32:17the replay really of that chance on the far side, but was there an opportunity for Smith
32:22to keep it in hands, he had support from Lawrence and Freeman to his left, there absolutely was
32:28and there was a chance, if you're going to go for the kick, there's a bit too much lead on it
32:31it was a let off for New Zealand, the attack building up to it was nice, it's just that
32:35calmness of thought and chat when you get into the opposition 22, wasn't quite there
32:41and all week England would have been saying, we need to take our chances
32:46and they come along, have to be ruthless and Chandler cutting himself, might be about to do that
32:53Marotoshi
32:57well he's claiming that he's scored, what does the referee think
33:02my initial view is that England player grounded the ball
33:13so open decision is a try, we need to confirm that, so it's weighted in England's favour
33:23it's got to be clear and obvious that it's not a try for this not to be awarded
33:28powerful stuff from England, of course we'll have a look at the grounding Chandler
33:31cutting himself, the phase before this, geez he's a handful isn't he
33:37Itoji not a huge amount of work to do but it's whether anyone got themselves underneath it
33:43got it, easy, what a try, powerful stuff from England
33:51they've certainly looked threatening in New Zealand's half in this first quarter
33:56it's born fruit, Itoji with the score, it's a power play from England
34:00and now if it was a missed chance when Marcus Smith went for the boots, doesn't really matter
34:06because England have gone straight back up to this end of the field where they want to be
34:11and Chandler cutting himself, born in Kent but brought up in New Zealand, well he's made his
34:18impact there and Marotoshi of course made his impact on the Lions tour here in 2017
34:24and his try has brought England level, Smith has this for the lead
34:33easy from Smith, England are canny, England are canny, they set up for what looks like a
34:39more New Zealand half to cover that, they have to keep numbers there in case England do decide to
34:44try but the benefit of having a load of really really good well-renowned powerful ball carriers
34:50in your forward pack is when Bernal takes that ball off the back, everyone has to cover him, then
34:54Chandler South comes, then Marotoshi comes, wave after wave, New Zealand can't wrap around the corner
34:59can't deal with it
35:06use it nine, England deal with the kickoff well, understand that you may have lost
35:12picture temporarily there, apologies for that
35:20I'm not sure anyone quite knows what's going on there
35:29who's knocked it on, who hasn't, England lost their picture as well, yeah
35:36the floodlights went for a minute didn't they, just for a second
35:41that was Chandler cutting himself, got the tap back, I think Mitchell then knocked it on
35:45yeah it's just been a bit of pressure coming up, heck of a slap back wasn't it, great slap back
35:50yeah, if you're gonna do it, it was such a good slap back that his mate couldn't catch it
35:57got the feeling it was rather adrenaline fueled that one, yeah, it was more of a right hook than a slap
36:02back wasn't it, he was thinking well I'll go for the ball but if I catch anything else on the way up
36:08it's a bonus
36:09the end result has given New Zealand this excellent attacking position, what can McKenzie
36:24entails do, first they'll look for the solid platform, they've got that and they've got the
36:28penalty as well, so it's a guaranteed three, should they want it, they want more
36:32and it goes to try scorer for New Zealand, Rhys
36:35and Taylor
36:43a nice pace to the game between two Pilotu
36:48finds Peronara, Perifetta, oh he slipped away from his man, it was beautifully done
36:53and he surely created again in that corner, it has for Adi Sobhia
36:58missed tackle at this level, at any level in that position can land you in all kinds of trouble
37:11and it did there for England
37:17and it's Tommy Freeman just gets up ahead of Ben Earl doesn't he
37:21leaves a gap on the outside and as soon as your defense isn't properly aligned, as soon as there
37:25are gaps there, look at that gap, if Freeman sticks close to Ben Earl, geez they've still got a problem
37:31but they can deal with it, but once Steven Perifetta puts the footwork on Ben Earl and you
37:36know what one-on-one if he's got room there's only so much you can do about that, that's why you need
37:41your mates inside and outside you, he could be anyone, he could be anyone on this field one-on-one
37:46as could Ben Earl probably with a bit of space but you need to be connected defensively, England
37:51weren't, except one player more advanced than the other leaves a hole, try time, that is such a good
37:56point, it's a total thing isn't it, got to work together, didn't work together there, paid the
38:03price, you can see the panic in Earl's face, oh yeah, as he was trying to get there he knew what
38:07might happen if he didn't and it did, you have this nightmare that takes a millisecond and then it
38:12comes true
38:16lovely footwork from Perifetta wasn't that lovely
38:21and that's not from Damian McKenzie, so once again New Zealand have to settle with
38:33just the trial, scratch of the head from the New Zealand kicker, there is Perifetta
38:37his last cap was off the bench against Scotland in 2022, so it's the returning players
38:42really putting down a marker today and Nadi Sabir has returned from Japan, played in a club game a
38:50couple of weeks ago, scored a couple of tries, got a 50-minute workout just to prove that he was
38:55ready and raring, that's good on the restart from England, still only three points in it
39:04and where's this one going to bounce, 50-22
39:10he's delighted with it
39:14but it's a great kick, 50-22 New Zealand will get the throw, comes off the back of some mucky attack
39:19from England, they saw New Zealand quite narrow in defence, they thought we'll lob the ball over
39:25the top but it had so much airtime, New Zealand realigned, the kick was poor
39:31Jordi Barrett came into the line out there, his first receiver
39:37Peronara, it's a female, Peronara again has a lovely zippy pass out to McKenzie
39:45and Talea, so strong in the tackle, he can hold it up again and wait for that support to Ippolotu
39:53New Zealand now starting to rev the engine as Lomax takes it forward
39:59Talea, encouraged by what he's done out wide, is now finding himself in centre field as well
40:06Jurani gives it away, taken by a very grateful, relieved almost, Henry Slade there
40:15he's well positioned as well Slade, he's there not by accident, they're putting pressure on
40:19even though New Zealand are stringing phases together, England were still moving off the line
40:23in their own 22, getting themselves in the way, much better defence
40:30there's a couple of times that Slade has been the apex of the defence
40:36right in the face of the New Zealand players
40:43Tamer again sets off, oh that was a gap that was inviting, England will look at that again and say
40:49should not have been there
40:56that's a good half rip in the tackle and it's done enough
40:59just must have just about been a knock on, it was good as Ollie Lawrence wasn't it, he was working for the
41:07the strip there in the tackle, as Rico Jurani carried in
41:12but Mark Talea, he's a problem for England isn't he, and the best thing about him, well is his ball
41:19carrying course, but he doesn't sit out on his wing, he doesn't just sit and wait for the ball
41:23he carries in tight and I can tell you as a former front rower myself, he is the last man you want
41:29to see coming off his wing, you want him to absolutely stay out there and try and finish
41:34tries because he's very very hard work for big heavy tired men, he did stay out a bit too late
41:39at the World Cup but it cost him, but move on from that, he's obviously dropped for the Ireland game
41:47breach of team discipline, okay water off lads, he sometimes stays out
42:00okay getting ready lads, an hour time, you can join us for that a little bit later on in the morning
42:05we're back to back with the morning offerings of England in New Zealand but also
42:12Wales and Australia, then the world champions meet Ireland in Pretoria this afternoon
42:20and Argentina France is eight o'clock this evening, our time, all those games live on Sky Sports
42:29and England will, they'll just want to get this ball away, get it away from the scrum, get it out
42:37of their half because make no mistake, the All Blacks have come for England at scrum time
42:42they're doing a bit of a job on them at the moment, the last couple
42:54lovely and solid from England, yeah first scrum in the match that's really gone nowhere
42:59locked, but that is great work at the breakdown from New Zealand, such a trademark of New Zealand
43:08rugby over the years, so direct, Underhill chops down Finau, he can do the reverse, we haven't
43:16seen it quite yet but my goodness me what a tackler he is, another good line from Papili,
43:23these direct lines are just cutting in, carving in and up at the moment, Jordie Barrett,
43:27Ontarico Ioanni, Talao is waiting again, he's gone wide again
43:32and he takes that ball quickly to keep the momentum in this attack, Adi Sarvia
43:41England get a penalty
43:46and was that for the challenge, it was, it was for the neck roll
43:51neck roll, yeah, thanks Harry, referees are going to show no forgiveness on that now
44:02neck roll, crock roll, part of the new laws, the crock roll has been
44:10outlawed, also as from the first of this month, onside from kicks, the old DuPont law
44:18onside players must attempt to retreat, to stop all this kick tennis or reduce it, as David says
44:26sometimes kicking needs to be loved for what it is, it's such a part of the modern game, the tactical
44:34nows that we see, but maybe for some a little bit too much and therefore onside from kicks is
44:40something that the officials will be looking out for, no scrum from a free kick now, it has to be a tap
44:46or a kick, it's the one I think is most controversial
44:52I don't like that one, but we haven't got four hours to talk about it
44:58here's Mackenzie
44:59retreat, retreat, retreat
45:08Judy Barrett has picked out Marcus Smith
45:13and here's Furbank, he's just running down a bit of a blind alley there, did well to
45:19locate the support, Slade looking for Freeman
45:23and Pirofeta and Mackenzie have a lot of time here, retreat, retreat, retreat,
45:29hell of a kick, and there we see a kick in all its glory and what it can do, Henry Slade was
45:35kind of forced to kick wasn't he, there wasn't much going on, pump it down the channel and what
45:40you get against a high caliber team, you'd hope England would respond in the same, to the same
45:46level, you put a kick in like that, which is kind of just a kick for the sake of it, you can, you get
45:51pumped back 40 meters when a player of that quality, Mackenzie's quality's got time to tee one up
46:03Steve Walford alongside Richard Wigglesworth, both of them tourists here in 2003
46:10last time that England won a test match on New Zealand soil, Chandler cutting himself
46:18it was Ollie Chesson out of the tour injured, he's going to be a name that's going to be heavily
46:23involved with England in the years to come, but in cunning himself, Underhill Earl
46:27is that kind of balance that you like in the back row, yeah punchy, I do like, I do like a six
46:33who can operate at second row level in a line-out, just gives you better defensive options, more
46:38attacking options of course, problem is England have had Courtney Laws for the last however many
46:42years and he set quite a high bar, he kind of did it all
46:49big boots to fill
46:53yeah true great
47:00George to Otojo, that works nicely
47:08Mitchell, box kick once more, Freeman's job to try and get under it
47:12it's good claim from McKenzie in there
47:17it's not the tallest but he worked his way through, Geordie Barrett
47:23I think the timing on the tackle was okay, referee's not interested
47:31Smith's kick
47:32what about the chase, it was good, he was first there to Ferrafetta, to Lea
47:45De Groot to McKenzie, he's found the hole and Captain Barrett goes through
47:51back to McKenzie here, Ollie Lawrence tries to straggle him, threatening more than England, New Zealand
47:57England are recovering but that flat ball to Barrett through the middle, there are a couple
48:03of options weren't there, it's a beauty, really direct, and they're finding the space and that's what
48:09they're trying to do with the kick this time, it comes off Mitchell, falls for Furbank, there might
48:13be a little bit of space for him, De Groot read it and got in there quickly, smashed him, space gone
48:19De Groot was holding on to Mitchell there, it's another offence the referee's given but
48:30could easily have given that on Mitchell, he's gone to the referee in England's drum half to say
48:35you've got to watch that, well he could it's just, it's not a great look, you're painting a picture
48:41for the ref, you can't say Ethan De Groot's going directly back to front, he's come a bit around the
48:45side, it's a good aggressive counter up but he swings around the outside a bit, not a good look
48:50for the ref, unnecessary pen, now England get a chance to launch an attack, it's a good shot this
49:01from Ethan De Groot, great shot for the big loose head but you keep your eye on him as he gets up
49:07if the replay goes that long and it's kind of around the side that, he's on the outside
49:11extremity on the right, rolls around the outside, always going to get pinged for that, I think
49:21no attempt to stay upward there, he just flopped, I say not a good look, there's Ben Earl to Freeman
49:32who's not quite finding it going his way at the moment, Tommy Freeman and it's counter-attack
49:38time with Geordie Barrett, saw Henry Slade who tries to get back, wasn't much of an attempt
49:43to use the arms there from Ollie Lawrence, just barged the player to the ground
49:50Jamie George went low, Fairweather so high and they did the work
49:59as England's attack broke down again and the ball was knocked on, New Zealand's instinct is to play
50:04put pressure on England, it's not reckless, it's reasonably controlled
50:08when England recover defensively then they go to the kick, Marcus Smith trying to set up Furbank
50:18Mitchell finds Underhill, half time approaching, England would love a score here, Fairweather also
50:27gets a chance to stretch the legs but that's good from Taylor, a good pace but also it's the way
50:32tracked, looked comfortable, knew what he had to do and did it, McKenzie again, the call is to run it
50:39they've seen that England might be stretched beyond Underhill, Underhill was trying to cover
50:43space on the outside and on the inside, I think it was forward from Sevilla to McKenzie wasn't it, it was
50:53shame for New Zealand, just pushed it, just overran him
50:57McKenzie, the work on the floor, yes some Cody Taylor but Geordie Barrett, goodness me
51:02that breakdown work, Faye Wiboso had a go but isolated himself, no one else could quite get
51:07there, yeah clearly forward, there was space there wasn't there
51:16defensive work on the deck from the All Blacks, Cody Taylor again
51:21excellent, and that's a moment that shows the officials are right on it, yeah
51:25just well shoveled slightly forward and
51:36two of those maybe more, so will all of you at home, we all miss a bit that's all right, it's early isn't it
51:41England a great spot now, it's that line out they had a minute or two ago, put them in a great spot
51:57and you felt right, let's see what you got, in attack England, broke down, here we go again
52:03you'd imagine New Zealand will go for them, England rock solid in the last scrum, Alex Mitchell, Marcus
52:08Smith, all they want here is a lovely platform for either to spin that ball out or to Ben Earle to
52:14pick and work some magic, use that explosive pace off the back, let's see how this English attack
52:20looks, shall we, I'm talking to Steve Borthwick in the week, he was really impressed with the intensity
52:26in training, he said to Ricky before the match, it's something at the end of the long hard season
52:34he's been really impressed with, now time to show in England before the rest of halftime
52:40just empty those lungs here
52:49eyes from Baxter, good hands, here's Mitchell, here's Smith, England in search of their second
52:55score, McKenzie in search of the ball but it falls nicely to Tommy Freeman, is this his chance to get
53:01a break, referee has decided no, because called in from the side I think, same like this, well maybe the TMO Eric goes out
53:19might have been on Santa Penny Fee now from Finn Baxter
53:23it might have been, well the refs told us they were going to be hot on the net rolls
53:28the crocodile rolls
53:34seems they are
53:37of course totally and utterly unplugged the England attack
53:45quite severe, I mean that's, that's almost like a shoulder to shoulder, it's almost like a hand on
53:51the ear, so as net rolls go, that'll be not that net rolly for me, from Baradon to Savia
54:03he enriched the tri-scorers for New Zealand, Atoje for England, a bit of a limp first phase
54:10that for New Zealand wasn't it, England all over that, slowed it right down, got themselves
54:14back in position, George Martin causing problems, I think he's hurt, well T.J. Peronara might have
54:23hyper extended his knee, George Martin counter up somebody onto him
54:30certainly hopping around in genuine pain there is T.J. Peronara
54:34my first two is a counter rock which was legal, I just stopped the ball, I just stopped the game
54:43for a safety, just in case if we had the ball, the ball's on our side, no he's holding the ball,
54:49there's George Martin on Barrett's net, but not going to affect the domino effect there, all right
54:54hang on lads, I'm going to explain, it's a counter rock, it's legal, foot is trapped, I stopped the game because of that
54:59if your player was holding the ball, it's going to be their scum, no, no, it's our scum sir, he let go
55:04of the ball, no, he let the goal because he was injured, oh, you blew the whistle after we already had the game
55:10come on that's a decision, they were held on the ball, well Jimmy George you can hear there on the
55:16referee's microphone, just arguing about the timing of it all, who had the ball when the whistle went
55:24there's not much arguing to be done with
55:27Mika Amashikele, he knows his own mind and there's nothing wrong with that, also how many times have
55:32you heard a ref change their mind, because a player asked them to, but Lisla we'd rather hope
55:37they wouldn't, it was a counter rock, George Martin decent shot on Cody Taylor and watch when he gets up
55:45brutal strength, by the way that's Scott Barrett, he's dumping backwards
55:53and it was very tight there on the whistle and when Will Stewart picked that ball up, I think so
55:57and I think if you're blowing the whistle because you're worried about the safety of a player, I think
56:01it's, I think it's reasonable to give them the possession when you restart and hopefully
56:06TJ Paranoia looks all right doesn't he, yeah 100% if it's a safety issue, yeah, see why Jamie George
56:13made the point, yeah, De Groot again coming up out the outside, he is standing up there
56:20he's got to be careful, final play then of this first half
56:31second test was played here in 2014, there's one point in it in the end
56:36with a tight one here tonight
56:44and as Finau, of course New Zealand will look to play
56:48and at once for getting the ball off the field, certainly not anywhere near halfway
56:55if they totally lose their shape, they'll make the hard-nosed decision and clear
57:00into the stands, still they feel there's a chance to work something as Finau gives
57:05it to Perrafetta, Mitchell's got to be on his game here, acting as the winger until Freeman
57:11gets back in position, England's defence, marshalled these days of course by Felix Jones
57:19coming into the South African international setup, all looking in the right positions here
57:26Talaire on to Taylor, now it does break down but again it's still not forward
57:35and still New Zealand are looking here, it was nearly some magic from Mark Talaire off the
57:40floor there to Cody Taylor, millimetres for magic, what a great shot from Cunningham South on Barrett
57:46that was, what a shot, but up to Oli Lawrence there, a chance to go in at the interval all square
57:56and it's going to be Henry Slade by the looks of it, no it's not, it's going to be Marcus Smith
58:00it's been quite brutal that change but of course it's a very good option, the top point score in
58:05the premiership this season Slade, yeah great option, good penalty, Oli Lawrence in a decent
58:11position to nick that ball, Scott Barrett never let go of it, he tried to hold it between his
58:16knees, between his calf to look like he'd let go of it, honestly Ref I'm trying, Ref spotted it
58:21all from the Chandler Cunningham South tackle on Barrett
58:28not having it all his own way, the new All Blacks captain
58:31dumped backwards on the counter up, smacked by the young blind side
58:38Tennold feel about right, his statement of the obvious of the day but Smith needs this, he does
58:45need it, because New Zealand you'd say have probably been the better attacking side in this first half
58:49just about, that means nothing if you don't score the points, how about that, which he does
58:58and we have the game all level at the interval, two tries to one to New Zealand but the scores
59:06level at 10 apiece and we'll get the views of Kyle, Nick and Will with Anna in a short while
