00:00Now everyone's making it in film and TV, but we don't really know how.
00:06Here, we uncover the truth.
00:08Welcome to the Your Cinema Podcast.
00:13Welcome to the Your Cinema Podcast.
00:16This is the place where we explore the truth about the industry
00:19and hear it directly from those who are smashing it in their areas.
00:24Today, we've got an amazing guest who you're definitely going to be knowing a lot more about.
00:29She's been in The Payday by Kyla Frye.
00:32She was in The Weekend with Jovan Wade and Purcell Ascot.
00:36But she is also one of the superheroes in Netflix's groundbreaking superhero drama,
00:43Supercell, by Ratman.
00:45I'll introduce to you Nadine Mills.
00:48What's going on?
00:49You're right. Hello.
00:51I'm good. I'm good.
00:53It's such a pleasure to have you today.
00:57Thanks. It's a pleasure to be on here.
01:00Come on. Come on. Come on.
01:02I've been looking forward to this for quite some time.
01:05It's been a long time coming, actually. It has.
01:07It has, hasn't it?
01:08It's been like over a year, isn't it?
01:10Yes, it has. It has.
01:12But we are here. We are here.
01:15Now, I know that, you know, there's going to be a lot of interest
01:22and, you know, probably loads of the same questions that you've been experiencing from press days
01:28and all of that good stuff, right?
01:30Yeah.
01:31I think for me and, you know, for the platform of everyone that's watching,
01:37I think that Supercell is amazing.
01:40It's going to be an amazing project.
01:42But I really just want to uncover, like, the journey and more about you,
01:47if I'm completely honest.
01:49Yeah.
01:50I'm sure there are some stories and been some ups and downs.
01:54So I really just want to take it back and, like, go from the beginning.
01:58Like, when did you first start acting?
02:03I would say professionally.
02:09Thirteen years ago.
02:11But it's always something that I've wanted to do.
02:13So, like, I studied drama as a GCSE in school.
02:17I went to college and I took performing arts.
02:20So, like, it was something that I was always, like, gearing towards.
02:24But I'd say professionally, 13 years ago.
02:27And that was when I was attending part-time drama school.
02:33Amal Meen had a drama school.
02:35So I don't know if you know that.
02:36So he had a drama school and I attended that part-time.
02:39Then he done a short film, Drink Drugs and KFC.
02:43He was holding auditions for that.
02:45And he said he was only going to, like, hire people from the school for the short film.
02:52So, obviously, I auditioned for it.
02:54And I got the role of Montana.
02:56I think her name is Montana.
02:57Montana.
02:58I was the lead female in the short film.
03:01And it started from there.
03:04Like, so after that, you know, I would, like, do some theatre shows, some short films.
03:12Like you said, I'd done The Weekend.
03:14And I've had little bits here and there.
03:16But nothing has been, like, concrete, you know, until Supercell.
03:21So, hopefully, you know, this is the thing that's just going to open the doors.
03:26But it's been a long time.
03:28Yeah, 13 years I've been, like, grafting.
03:31Yeah.
03:33I love that.
03:34I love that.
03:35And thank you for the honesty and transparency.
03:37You know, so taking it back, right?
03:41Like, Amel's drama school, that must have been really exciting times.
03:46Because he was, like, was he doing The Bill?
03:50Yeah, he was on The Bill.
03:52Yeah.
03:53And I'm sure, did he?
03:54Had he done Kidulthood?
03:55I think he had done Kidulthood as well.
03:57Yeah.
03:58It was a big deal.
03:59It was like, oh, my gosh, you know, the guy from The Bill and Kidulthood.
04:03He's got a drama school.
04:04You know, you attend.
04:06And, you know, the drama school, it was really good.
04:08It was professionally, like, run.
04:10Yeah.
04:11So, yeah, it was a huge deal.
04:13You know, you had to audition to get in there and stuff.
04:16Yeah, yeah.
04:17So with that, right, like, all the excitement, do you know what?
04:21Because there's also excitement and reality, and it seems like there was both.
04:27There was the excitement of, like, cool, you know, this, like, Amel is an amazing talent.
04:32Yeah.
04:33And there's an actual reality of this is actually a professional place.
04:37Yes, yes.
04:38So with those two things, obviously, you know, resulting in a high standard,
04:44I can imagine that getting that role in the short film, and the short film was actually.
04:50It's done, right?
04:51Did you watch it?
04:52It's a good short film.
04:54Like it really is.
04:56Everyone should go check it out if they haven't, right?
04:58Yeah.
04:59Drink, Jazz and KFC.
05:00It's on YouTube.
05:01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:03With that, how did you think your career was going to go after, you know,
05:07getting into the drama school and landing that role in the short film?
05:13To be fair, I don't think I had, like, expectations.
05:16It was just a thing of, oh, OK, like, let's see what's next, you know?
05:21But I did have, like, the hunger for it.
05:22I was like, oh, I've been on set now.
05:24I kind of know, like, what to expect.
05:27Like, I want this.
05:28I want this even more than I did before.
05:31I don't think I had an expectation of, like, what was to come.
05:36Also, I didn't have an agent at the time,
05:38so it was a matter of just finding things through word of mouth
05:41or, like, looking on, what was that website?
05:45Is it mandi.com, I think?
05:47Yeah.
05:48Mandi.com had some stuff.
05:49So it was just doing it all on your own, you know?
05:52But a lot of the things that I did end up getting,
05:55it was, like, word of mouth.
05:57So, you know, Sheila Naughtley,
06:00who was the producer on Drink, Drugs and KFC.
06:03You're lying.
06:04Yes, that's how far back our relationship goes.
06:08Yeah, Sheila Naughtley was the producer on Drink, Drugs and KFC.
06:11She used to, whatever she was a part of,
06:15she would try and get me involved or get me an audition for that.
06:18So I always had Sheila's, you know, Sheila's there in my corner.
06:23So she would get me stuff.
06:25Samson Kao, he was in Drink, Drugs and KFC,
06:27and he's, you know, he's doing amazing right now.
06:30He always would put me up for stuff, like,
06:32oh, my God, Ne, I'm doing this thing, I'm going to put your name forward.
06:35So I always had people that were sort of in my corner
06:38that, like, believed in me as well.
06:40So a lot of the things that I got were, like, word of mouth.
06:44And that's how it started.
06:45Then I was able to put myself on Spotlight,
06:47because I think you need to have, like, three credits or something.
06:50Put my name on Spotlight,
06:51and then I was putting myself forward on Spotlight
06:54because I still wasn't represented.
06:57Still wasn't represented.
06:59So it was that graft as well.
07:02But wait, how does that work?
07:03Because I'm, like, I know, kind of know how Spotlight works,
07:07but I'm not an actor, innit?
07:09I think, if I remember,
07:11you have to have, like, three professional credits.
07:13Yeah.
07:15And then, I think that's it.
07:17Or I had gone, like, to some sort of drama school.
07:19I had some training.
07:21So I had also attended Identity for a little while as well.
07:26So I put that down, Identity.
07:28I put a male school down.
07:30I attended, like, some Sharon Harris classes as well.
07:33You were out here.
07:35I was out here, all part-time.
07:36Like, I was going to all that part-time.
07:38So I'd done that for a little while.
07:40So I was able to put those three classes on the CV,
07:44and they were recognized, you know, Identity, Sharon Harris.
07:47And then the three credits, I think it was Drink, Drugs, and KFC.
07:50Yeah.
07:51And then I'd done, like, a Soho theater production.
07:54And then, I can't remember what the other thing was.
07:56It was another short film,
07:57but then I was able to get onto Spotlight.
08:00Yeah.
08:01And then, yeah.
08:02So that's how I got onto it.
08:03So then what happens?
08:04Like, on Spotlight, what, jobs go out,
08:07and then anyone can apply?
08:09Because I know, like, agents.
08:11Yeah.
08:12I think it's got, like, it's got the breakdown.
08:14So, like, the age of the character, the race sometimes,
08:17and then what the character is, like, their breakdown of the character.
08:21And then you kind of just submit yourself.
08:23I can't even remember if I'm – it's so long.
08:26But I think you just submit yourself.
08:28I think agents have that same breakdown,
08:34but I do think that they also have, like, maybe another section.
08:37Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
08:38I think if your agent has, like, a good relationship with casting directors,
08:42you're better off, you know, in that sense.
08:44That's where it helps.
08:45Okay.
08:46But, yeah, then after that, I was – I knew Kojo.
08:51I know Kojo.
08:52Yeah, yeah.
08:53And he was telling me about The Weeknd, that he's doing The Weeknd.
08:56But I knew about The Weeknd years before it became what it was
09:00because it was actually meant to be, like –
09:02it still went to be The Weeknd, but it was meant to be something else.
09:05I was actually meant to play Kojo's younger sister originally.
09:08Okay, yeah, yeah.
09:09So it would be Kojo and a couple of others, I think, as the main characters.
09:13As time went on, it became Jovan and the boys.
09:16Yeah, yeah.
09:18So, yeah, then he was like,
09:19I've got this role that I think you're going to be great for.
09:21So I said, okay, cool.
09:23And then, yeah, then after The Weeknd, I got my agent.
09:26I secured my agent.
09:27Like, I sent out some stuff, and I was like to some agents,
09:30you know, I'm in this film, The Weeknd, and released in cinema.
09:35And, yeah, the couple got back to me,
09:37and then that's when I got my first agent.
09:39Come on.
09:40Yeah.
09:41You know, right?
09:42Between, like, that sounds, because, and for me, yeah,
09:47you're telling it with so much grace.
09:49And also, like, there's a lightheartedness,
09:53which I'm finding, I find quite interesting,
09:56because for a lot of people coming out of, like, drama school
10:00and then making their way in the industry, you know,
10:03like when you said, you know what?
10:04Like, I've actually been crafting, like, you know,
10:07self-representing myself on spotlight, all of that stuff.
10:10Yeah.
10:11Until, like, before being signed, what was that,
10:14what was that like for you emotionally?
10:18Do you know, again, I think it's that thing of,
10:23you know that it's something you're doing professionally.
10:26Yeah.
10:27But let's be honest, you're not getting paid
10:29for maybe all of the stuff that you're doing.
10:33You know, like, maybe I will cover travel expenses
10:36and, you know, things like that.
10:38There's a lot of jobs that I do,
10:40and I wasn't really getting paid.
10:42So I think it just shows your passion
10:47and your hunger for it.
10:48So it was, like, more so just knowing that I'm actually
10:51around these people and, you know, in the right circles,
10:56rather than, like, putting so much pressure on myself
10:59as to whether or not I'm going to make it.
11:02Do you know?
11:03It's just knowing that these are the stepping stones
11:06that I needed to take.
11:08Yeah.
11:09Yeah, instead of putting too much pressure on myself.
11:11But then I think once I got my agent, funny enough,
11:14I think that's when the pressure started to come.
11:17Okay.
11:18It was like, oh, okay, like, I've got an agent.
11:22This is the real deal.
11:23Do you know what I mean?
11:24Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:26Wow.
11:27So then in terms of, because I guess,
11:30and what I find interesting about that is, like,
11:33agents, they actually work for you, innit?
11:35Mm-hmm.
11:36So it's kind of like, well, really,
11:39the pressure should be on them to give you work.
11:41Them.
11:42Yeah.
11:43But I understand the reality of, well,
11:47I've been doing this myself, and this is, I need this.
11:50Yeah, yeah.
11:51Like, I want this.
11:52Yeah.
11:53I don't want to let them down.
11:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:56What changed for you when you got the agent?
11:59Was it the auditions?
12:00Was it, I don't know.
12:02It was the auditions.
12:03I would say maybe the caliber of auditions
12:05were a little bit better.
12:07Yeah.
12:08Although I was still grafting myself,
12:11and again, the connections that I had made in the industry,
12:15I still had a lot of, like, recommendations come through.
12:19So there was still work that I was doing myself, you know.
12:22Your agent helps, but to a degree,
12:25and it depends, you know.
12:26Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:28It depends on your agent and your agency, like, you know.
12:31But, yeah, I would say it got better
12:35in terms of maybe the caliber of jobs.
12:38Yeah.
12:40But it was still graft.
12:42It was still graft.
12:44Yeah.
12:45So what was it like?
12:47So, and, because a lot of actors, like,
12:50actors always talk about the nose, right?
12:52Ah.
12:53Should we talk about the nose?
12:55Let's talk about the nose.
12:56Can we talk about the nose?
12:57Yeah.
12:58Oh, listen, I mean, I can just jump to the point where,
13:02I mean, I don't want to jump too much.
13:04I know we're taking it back, but the nose are so disheartening.
13:10I was ready to just give up.
13:14Before I booked Supercell,
13:16I was ready to say goodbye to this career.
13:18Like, having worked 10 years, like, you know,
13:21because it was two years ago that I booked Supercell now.
13:24So, like, you know, 10 years working,
13:26and all the nose that you get, oh my God,
13:29you're just like, what is the point?
13:31Like, what is the point?
13:32What am I doing?
13:33Is this actually worth it?
13:34Is it worth your mental health?
13:36And then, you know, you start looking like,
13:38I'm working two, three jobs sometimes,
13:40because I don't want to commit to a nine to five, you know,
13:44for those auditions or just in case you book something.
13:47And so I was doing, like, a couple part-time jobs,
13:50so I was a bit more flexible.
13:52And then I was looking at it and I was like, look,
13:54what is my life right now?
13:55I need stability, you know?
13:58And I'm just going to throw the towel in.
14:02And before Supercell came through, I said, all right,
14:07let me, because I was teaching, teaching kids
14:10that have been kicked out of school.
14:12So I thought, all right, let me just go
14:13and do a teacher's degree, you know?
14:15So I started actually looking to start for September
14:18of that year, I can't remember what year that was,
14:21was that 20, what were we, 24, maybe 22,
14:24to do my teaching degree.
14:25I was like, let me just do this properly,
14:27get my teaching degree.
14:29And yeah, because I had had enough, honestly.
14:32It is soul crushing, soul crushing.
14:36I mean, actors, we are strong.
14:38What we have to put up with, we are strong, you know?
14:42And to keep going, I think that's even more strength.
14:46But I was close to saying goodbye.
14:49Wow.
14:50I know.
14:52You know, yeah.
14:55So thank you, thank you for continuing.
14:59Right.
15:00Because we wouldn't be here.
15:01Right, we wouldn't, we wouldn't.
15:04I thank God for that.
15:05I literally, I put a prayer down.
15:07I was like, listen, God, if this is not my path,
15:11help me to release it, you know?
15:14If this is not my path, just release it and let me know.
15:17Yeah, I put a prayer down.
15:19I was like, am I really going to give up 10 years?
15:24But I was at that point and I put a prayer down
15:27and then God was like, okay, look, I'm showing you.
15:31So yeah, that is what it was.
15:35Wow.
15:36You know, so last week, right,
15:45I was thinking about what you said, right?
15:49Now we have met today.
15:52But the reason I was thinking about what you said
15:54is because Michael Salami said the exact same thing.
15:58Yes.
15:59Yeah.
16:00And you know, you know, Michael's in Supercell as well.
16:02We can say that it's been revealed.
16:03So Michael is, and obviously we had those conversations.
16:07Giacomo, who was in Top Boy, he's in Supercell.
16:12Yep, yep, yep.
16:13Also ready to give up.
16:15There's quite a few people in Supercell
16:17that were ready to just say goodbye to their careers
16:20and Supercell is hopefully that thing that just keeps us going.
16:24And we all had those conversations on set.
16:26So yeah, Michael, I know he was one of them.
16:28I know.
16:29And Giacomo was another one.
16:31All three of us were ready to just be like, yeah, we're done.
16:36Man.
16:37So, yeah, it's, I'm a bit, I'm not lost for words,
16:46but I'm processing because when that came to mind last week,
16:51I was like, I've heard that a lot.
16:55A lot.
16:56There's like a, I don't want to say like this is anyone's portion,
17:00but there's a pattern I noticed where people want it so badly
17:06that it gets to a point where they're ready to let it go
17:12and it feels like the thing just flows.
17:16Yeah, yeah.
17:18You know when they say, if you love someone,
17:20I guess you just got to make, like, you know, like they say,
17:22oh, you love someone, you got to let them go.
17:24It's like your career, isn't it?
17:25You love it so much, but it's like, do you know what?
17:27What's meant to be will be.
17:28I'm just going to let it go and just live with that.
17:33Do you think that that mental release that you had
17:39allows you to enjoy it more?
17:43And it may be a no, I'm just, I'm just wondering.
17:46I don't know.
17:47Does it?
17:49Does it?
17:50I don't know.
17:51I don't know.
17:52Because I still think it's crazy.
17:55I know Supercell's about to drop and stuff,
17:57but I'm still in a part of my life where I'm like,
18:00what's going to happen?
18:03It's crazy, but I'm still like, what's going to happen?
18:06And I know it's a huge Netflix show,
18:08and I'm sure it's going to do great things for my career,
18:12God willing.
18:14But I am still at a point where it's like, I don't know.
18:17I think the rejection becomes so much to the point where that's
18:22still there, you know, in the back of your mind,
18:25in a weird way.
18:27I can't explain it, but it's still there.
18:30That's really interesting.
18:31So, and the reason I,
18:33the reason I say it's interesting is because I can't,
18:36I can't believe I'm about to say this.
18:38Right.
18:39But imagine 10 years of rejections.
18:41Yeah.
18:42Yeah.
18:43That has to have built up something in,
18:46in,
18:47in you in terms of like,
18:49I don't know if it's resilience or like water off a duck's back,
18:53not taking it personally.
18:55Yeah.
18:57But how's it like, how, like, how have those,
19:01how have those 10 years shaped you,
19:04would you say?
19:07Good or bad, by the way?
19:09Yeah.
19:10I would say there's,
19:12there's definitely a level of resilience there.
19:15Definitely.
19:17I also think,
19:21I don't know if I'm being honest.
19:24When I look at those 10 years and it's because I think as well,
19:29I hadn't done much in those 10 years,
19:31although I had been grafting for 10 years and I had little things here and
19:34there.
19:35Yeah.
19:36I hadn't been blessed to do a lot of things,
19:39you know?
19:40So I was still finding myself,
19:42I guess,
19:43as an,
19:44as an actor,
19:45you know,
19:46and,
19:47and finding my feet in that way,
19:49even though I was 10 years in.
19:52And I,
19:53again,
19:54I think it's not until I got Supercell where I was like,
19:56oh,
19:57okay,
19:58cool.
19:59I'm,
20:00I'm in my power,
20:01you know?
20:02Okay.
20:03I got you.
20:04I got you.
20:05I got you.
20:06Okay.
20:07I got you.
20:08Cool.
20:09So how did Supercell come about?
20:10The wonderful Sheila Nautley.
20:13The wonderful Sheila Nautley.
20:15Like,
20:16so I obviously heard when it got greenlit.
20:19Yeah.
20:20I read up on it and I was like,
20:22oh my God,
20:23this is going to be wicked.
20:24Black superheroes,
20:25you know?
20:26And I remember I reached out to my agent.
20:28I was like,
20:29look,
20:30have you heard about this thing by Rapman,
20:31Supercell?
20:32You know,
20:33it's going to be on Netflix.
20:34And they were like,
20:35yeah.
20:36I was like,
20:37look,
20:38you need to get me in this show.
20:39Get me in the show.
20:40And they were like,
20:41yeah,
20:42don't worry.
20:43We're on it.
20:44You know,
20:45we've been looking at things.
20:46And I was like,
20:47cool.
20:48Months passed.
20:49And I reached out to my agent again.
20:50I'm like,
20:51what's happening with Supercell?
20:52Have you heard anything?
20:53You know?
20:54And they were like,
20:55no,
20:56no,
20:57we haven't heard anything.
20:58And I was like,
20:59oh,
21:00that's a shame.
21:01And then I saw that Sebastian had been brought on as director.
21:06I was like,
21:07oh my God,
21:08message Sebastian,
21:09because I know Sebastian.
21:10I was like,
21:11Deb,
21:12what's happening with the auditions?
21:13Have they finished?
21:14Are they still auditioning?
21:15Like,
21:16I haven't heard anything.
21:17And then my agent said that they've tried and,
21:19and he was like,
21:20oh,
21:21um,
21:22you know,
21:23all the,
21:24uh,
21:25lead roles are gone.
21:26And I said,
21:27but there's still auditioning.
21:28Yeah.
21:29He's like,
21:30yeah.
21:31I said,
21:32cool.
21:33I just want to know that there's still auditioning.
21:34Went back to my agent.
21:35I was like,
21:36look,
21:37there's still auditioning for Supercell.
21:38Get me a role.
21:39Like,
21:40just get me a role in this show.
21:41And then they came back saying,
21:42oh yeah,
21:43all the lead roles are gone.
21:44I was like,
21:45I don't care about a lead role.
21:46I just want to know that there's still auditioning for Supercell.
21:47For the culture,
21:48for like,
21:49just for everything.
21:50And then
21:51didn't hear anything.
21:52And then Sheila calls me,
21:53obviously she's been brought on board now because,
21:56oh,
21:57um,
21:58are you busy at the moment?
21:59Are you doing anything or what's happening?
22:00I said,
22:01I'm not doing anything at the moment,
22:02you know?
22:03And she's like,
22:04I've got this,
22:05um,
22:06role.
22:07I think I've got this role for you.
22:08And I was like,
22:09oh,
22:10send it to my agent.
22:11Then I didn't think it was Supercell.
22:12Cause she didn't say what it was.
22:13I was like,
22:14oh yeah,
22:15okay,
22:16cool.
22:17I think this would be really great for you.
22:18Well,
22:19it comes through my agent Supercell.
22:20And I'm,
22:21I'm thinking,
22:22I'm thinking my agent got it for me.
22:23And I was like,
22:24oh my God,
22:25finally it's come through.
22:26And then Sheila messages me and she's like,
22:28did you get the,
22:29um,
22:30audition?
22:31I was like,
22:32was it for Supercell?
22:33She said,
22:34yeah.
22:35I said,
22:36oh my God.
22:37Yeah.
22:38My agent got,
22:39came like,
22:40it's come through and she goes,
22:41yeah.
22:42And I was like,
22:43oh,
22:44my God,
22:45what happened?
22:46Yeah.
22:47They need to fill this,
22:48this,
22:49fill the space.
22:50I was like,
22:51oh my gosh.
22:52She's like,
22:53yeah,
22:54this is,
22:55you know,
22:56this is,
22:57this is all you.
22:58She's like,
22:59Sabrina is you like,
23:00you know,
23:01it's written all over you.
23:02I was like,
23:03oh my God.
23:04Okay.
23:05Amazing.
23:06Thank you.
23:07Thank you.
23:08Thank you.
23:09Um,
23:10and then I had to audition.
23:11It was a face or in-person audition.
23:12Yeah.
23:13Um,
23:14like I said,
23:15all the lead roles are full and then happened quite late.
23:19I think we were filming due to film in August.
23:22Yeah.
23:23And I auditioned,
23:24I think beginning of July or end of June.
23:26Wow.
23:27It was really,
23:28it was really quite,
23:29yeah.
23:30I don't even know if I'm allowed to say that,
23:31but I'm sorry.
23:32Okay.
23:33So it was quite late on into,
23:35into the process.
23:37Um,
23:38so yeah,
23:39it was in straight in-person audition.
23:41Met with Raps and Isabella,
23:43um,
23:44and then had to do a second.
23:46So I got a call back.
23:47Yeah.
23:48Second.
23:49And who was the director in your audition?
23:51Um,
23:52Raps.
23:53Okay.
23:54Oh,
23:55wait.
23:56So he directed some episodes.
23:57Yeah.
23:58Yeah.
23:59Yeah.
24:00Raps directed.
24:01Yeah.
24:02Raps directed as well.
24:03Serious?
24:04Yes.
24:05Oh,
24:06wow.
24:07Okay.
24:08Okay.
24:09Okay.
24:10So Raps was in the room and Isabella.
24:13So I auditioned for them,
24:15got through the first round,
24:16got a call back for the second round.
24:18So wait,
24:19wait,
24:20wait,
24:21wait,
24:22wait,
24:23wait.
24:24So,
24:25so in your audition,
24:26what happened?
24:27Who was there?
24:28Was it like,
24:29did you have to do chemistry with anyone?
24:30What's happening?
24:31That's the second audition.
24:32That's what I'm coming to say.
24:33So the first audition was just me,
24:35me,
24:36Raps and Isabella.
24:37And then the second audition was a chemistry read.
24:39And it was with a few people who were going to play my sister.
24:44Yep.
24:45Okay.
24:46But there was a few people going for my role.
24:48So wait,
24:49so I'm sorry.
24:50Then a few people going for my sister's role.
24:52Wait,
24:53so in the first audition,
24:54what,
24:55is it a monologue?
24:56Is it what?
24:57No,
24:58no,
24:59it themes from the,
25:00the show.
25:01Yeah.
25:02Isabella was reading the other lines.
25:03Isabella read the other lines.
25:05So that was fine.
25:06And then,
25:07yeah.
25:08So in the second audition,
25:09it was a chemistry read.
25:10Yeah.
25:11And there were girls going for my role and girls going for my sister's role.
25:17Oh,
25:18true.
25:19And we were rotating.
25:22Oh,
25:23man.
25:24We were rotating.
25:25So they obviously,
25:26it's just like to see who,
25:27who works with who and.
25:29Yeah.
25:30Well,
25:31and yeah,
25:32so we was doing that.
25:33So that was quite intense.
25:34So all of you guys are all in the same room.
25:36Yeah.
25:37Not in the same room.
25:38It was in the same waiting,
25:39waiting area.
25:40Oh,
25:41okay.
25:42Yeah.
25:43Yeah.
25:44Yeah.
25:45Yeah.
25:46Yeah.
25:47Yeah.
25:48He's going to play your sister.
25:49Yeah.
25:50You do that.
25:51Like,
25:52yeah.
25:53So,
25:54you know,
25:55like,
25:56cause I understand they need to,
25:57because it's chemistry in it.
25:58So,
25:59but then also what I'm,
26:00what it seems like to me as well is there's also the other side,
26:03which is maybe a bit awkward for the actor of like,
26:06okay,
26:07does that mean I didn't do well?
26:08Okay.
26:09All right.
26:10What is like,
26:11what,
26:12like what's going on in your mind when,
26:13when that's happening?
26:14Definitely.
26:15Because there's,
26:16I think as well,
26:17like,
26:18I mean,
26:19I've heard people say that sometimes it's,
26:20you get the role just because,
26:21not because you look like what they pictured,
26:23but sometimes you look like what,
26:24what they pictured in their head.
26:26Yeah.
26:27Sometimes you don't get the role because you don't fit what they were looking for.
26:32It doesn't necessarily mean you didn't do a great job.
26:35But I was sitting there thinking,
26:36okay,
26:37there's,
26:38there's a couple of people who are going up for my sister where I know,
26:40aesthetically,
26:41we don't look like sisters.
26:42So I was,
26:43so I was thinking,
26:44you know,
26:45if,
26:46if,
26:47if she gets,
26:48if that person gets the role,
26:49then I know I definitely haven't got it.
26:50Or if,
26:51you know,
26:52you know,
26:53I,
26:54there was that going on in my head.
26:55If I get the role,
26:56then I think,
26:57oh,
26:58she might be my sister.
26:59Like it was,
27:00it was literally that,
27:01that was going on.
27:02Wow.
27:03Yeah.
27:04That's interesting because when I'm,
27:05when I was catching up with Aisha by waters,
27:07right.
27:08She is just making it very clear how important it is for her.
27:14And I'm sure this is the case for a lot of casting directors.
27:17Yeah.
27:18I want you to have a nice experience.
27:21I want to make sure that this,
27:24you feel great.
27:25Yeah.
27:26During.
27:27And when you came out.
27:28Yeah.
27:29Then there's,
27:30but then she was also very frank of like,
27:33it is an awkward situation though,
27:35because the stakes are high and it's like,
27:37I want to try and make it as.
27:39So,
27:40yeah,
27:41that is,
27:42that's quite interesting.
27:43You've had your chemistry with your five different sisters.
27:47Yeah.
27:48And so was it like,
27:50you were also playing like the lead role and also the sister,
27:56and you didn't know which role you were going to get or it's like,
27:59no,
28:00I just went for,
28:01yeah,
28:02I was just up for Sabrina.
28:04Yeah.
28:05Sabrina.
28:06Yeah.
28:07And then,
28:08so yeah.
28:09What,
28:10what happens after that?
28:11After that.
28:12Is it a week goes by maybe,
28:16or maybe a few days.
28:17No,
28:18I honestly,
28:19everything's like a blur.
28:20It's like been two years,
28:22but if he's a blur,
28:23I think a few days go by or maybe a week.
28:26And then I get a call.
28:31Well,
28:32no,
28:33I don't even know if I'm allowed to say this.
28:35It's already happened,
28:36isn't it?
28:37Yeah.
28:38Of course you can,
28:39we're good.
28:40Sheila,
28:41Sheila calls me and she's like,
28:42oh my God,
28:43has your agent called you?
28:44And I'm like,
28:46no,
28:47why?
28:48Okay.
28:49I'll just wait for your agent to call you.
28:52And I was like,
28:53no,
28:54what's happened?
28:55Like,
28:56what do you know what's going on?
28:57She's like,
28:58you've got the role.
28:59You've got Sabrina.
29:00And I was like,
29:01what?
29:02She's like,
29:03you've got Sabrina.
29:04And I,
29:05I started crying.
29:06I just,
29:07I broke down because I knew before that I was,
29:10I was planning to just walk away,
29:12you know?
29:13So I just started,
29:14I started,
29:15I broke down.
29:16I was like,
29:17oh my God.
29:18And then she's like,
29:19you did it.
29:20I was like,
29:21oh my God.
29:22And obviously Sheila is,
29:23why that's so important is because Sheila been on my journey from the beginning,
29:26you know,
29:27from drink drugs,
29:28you know,
29:29to the industry.
29:30She was there.
29:31And she's,
29:32she's seen the journey as well.
29:33So I think that's why it's such a full circle moment.
29:34I love that.
29:35It was Sheila that was able to give me that news,
29:38even though I know it's supposed to be your agent or whatever,
29:40but it was really nice that it was,
29:42it was her.
29:43And then I was like,
29:44oh my God.
29:45I got really,
29:46I got really,
29:47literally just,
29:48I was bawling my eyes out.
29:51Wow.
29:52Like,
29:54it seems quite obvious,
29:57obvious right but i do want to unpack this a little bit like in the week let's say let's
30:04say a week right after even that call what what were you feeling like what were you reflecting
30:12on the week after receiving the phone call yeah
30:19what was i reflect i was like in all honesty i think i didn't believe it
30:25wow and it was one of those things until i signed the contract i'm not getting excited i'm not
30:32gonna get excited i'm not gonna get excited because i've i know stories and i've seen it
30:39happen to people where they think that they've got something and it's been taken away from them
30:43for whatever reason so in all honesty i think i wasn't and i was like until this contract comes
30:50through i'm not getting too excited i didn't really tell any i didn't tell anyone about it
30:55either like i just kept it to myself i was like no one's gonna know like until i know that contract
31:01has been signed and then um yeah so if i'm being honest it didn't really settle in for me and i
31:08think it was just one of those things where let's see if this is really mine you know yes it was
31:15just walking with caution to be fair i hear you i hear you i hear you so um cool now you've
31:22got the role on a whole yeah what what's it like being part of one of the biggest shows
31:32in my opinion right and i'm not trying to embellish but i feel like this is probably
31:38one of the biggest shows in the world this year um like when when netflix do trailers
31:46for shows and stuff they don't do they don't do oh wait here's an update
31:59so um that that's why i'm saying that but yeah for you what's it like
32:04this is i i don't even know do you know it's a week away i'm not gonna lie i'm still
32:12i'm still processing it i'm still like yeah i'm just i'm still processing it all
32:21it's a strange thing it's it's so strange i can't really put it into words yeah um
32:29um i definitely feel honored definitely put on it i'm like yeah i'm gonna be representing
32:39especially for the girls like you know because it's like the the leads i'm gonna be representing
32:44but yeah i don't know it's a strange one i'm i'm still processing it all you know all of this is
32:52new to me the level of you know the production and even down to the press and it's all new to me
33:03you know because everything i've done before like i said it's been little things here and there but
33:06nothing on this level nothing on this scale so it's all new to me so everything i'm constantly
33:12processing yeah constantly grateful you know and i'm just i'm working through those emotions
33:19still until the moment is released and then i think i'll know how i really feel
33:25you know but i am i'm really happy with with what we've done yeah and everyone's gonna
33:34love it like it is it's peak it's peak i've seen a couple of the episodes and i'm like
33:43okay so like you know having watched the episodes i'm like yeah yeah this is this is a big deal
33:47i'm happy with it like everyone's gonna be happy with it but in terms of like
33:51on the scale i think i'm still processing how it feels you know does that make sense
33:57yeah 100% like yeah for for for us all looking in it is like huge yeah i don't think i think
34:07as huge as it is for us right you still can't fathom how big it actually is you know when it's
34:16like oh um netflix has had like i don't know or shows had 100 million views or whatever yeah
34:25you know that's a big number but that's yeah yeah yeah yeah so i get what you mean
34:30i get yeah and it's like that's like i know i'm a part of this this thing that is huge
34:39but yeah i'm still processing it that's good that's good and you know what there's a there's
34:45there's a level of um it's either humility or you're just very grounded like there's a reality
34:55of like yeah i know this is big i don't know what it is but uh yeah we're here in it
35:01which is sorry which is is so i think it's i think it's important man i think given what you've been
35:09through as well i think you you're probably not building it up too much to be disappointed
35:18yeah although i i know i won't be disappointed i know i won't i know i won't but i think it yeah
35:24it's just it's just navigating i think what it's not i guess looking into the future too much it's
35:33like let's just be present that's what it is let's just be present in the moment in now let's
35:40not look ahead so i think that's what it is i'm just i'm just working with the now yeah amazing
35:46amazing amazing oh i i love it i love it i love it um before we go what else is popping what's
35:54going on we're like how how have you been the since super slow has wrapped
