The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (JCF) launched a teacher professional development programme to advance Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Malaysia at the opening ceremony of “ESD for 2030 Regional Meeting on Transforming the Futures of Education” at Sunway University.

Founder and Chairman of Sunway Group Tan Sri Sir Dr Jeffrey Cheah says JCF will fund the development and delivery of a capacity-building development programme on ESD for teachers in Malaysian national and national-type schools nationwide.

00:22on transforming the futures of education at Sunwind University on Wednesday.
00:28The ceremony was officiated by Fazila Fazil who serves as the undersecretary of strategic
00:33planning and international relations at the education ministry and as secretary general
00:38of the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO. Representing education minister Fatalina Siddiq
00:44who is also president of the Malaysian National Commission for UNESCO, Fazila welcomed the
00:48convening of the meeting in Malaysia drawing parallels between its objective and the Malaysia
00:53Madani philosophy. Madani underscores that Malaysia's development must transcend mere
01:00material and physical infrastructure emphasizing the cultivation of citizen character and
01:06capabilities. The enhancement of Malaysian citizens character and capabilities is pivotal
01:12to education. Also present at the event was president of the UNSDSN and Sir Jeffrey Chia
01:19distinguished professor at Sunwind University, Professor Jeffrey Sachs who delivered a keynote
01:24address on the imperative to transform education in order to build prosperous resilient and
01:29sustainable societies of the future. Education is the single most important investment that any
01:37society makes. That's not a statement of values that's an economic bottom line statement. If you
01:46want Malaysia to be a high-income country at the top of the league do exactly what Tan Sri
01:52Jeffrey Chia is doing, build institutions of excellence in the education sector, invest in
02:00education, invest more in education than you're investing right now because all of that is
02:07absolutely vital. Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Sir Dr Jeffrey Chia says
02:13JCF will fund the development and delivery of a capacity building development program on ESD
02:18for teachers in national and national type schools throughout the country.

02:28Okay by doing what we are doing I think we are gaining traction to get the impactful result that
02:35we want and this is the start of the Mission 4.7 thing that we are promoting and I think the
02:45vision school and we will expand it to more schools. The program will advance Mission 4.7,
02:52a global initiative to advance transformative education for the United Nations Sustainable
02:57Development Goals or SDGs which calls upon governments to ensure that learners acquire
03:02the knowledge, skills, values and attributes needed to achieve the SDGs.
