Sheffield retro: Photos showing a century of change on Fitzwilliam Street, famous for protests and partying
Transcript
00:00It's historic Sheffield Street which is today perhaps best associated with protests and partying.
00:07Fitzwilliam Street runs from West Street down past Devonshire Green to Charter Row near the bottom of the moor.
00:15It's the first port of call for many rallies departing from Devonshire Green before they continue up the moor and on to Sheffield Town Hall or Sheffield City Hall.
00:26Fitzwilliam Street is also home to one of the city's best loved late night pubs, The Washington, on the corner with Wellington Street.
00:34The Water and Coal, linked to the old Washington Works cutlery factory that was demolished in the 1970s, is a popular live music venue which was once co-owned by pulp drummer Nick Banks.
00:47These retro photos take you back in time through the history of Fitzwilliam Street, showing more than a century of change.
00:55As well as old photos of The Washington and other pubs which have sadly been lost, the images reveal the evolution of Devonshire Green and show some of the many businesses which have come and gone since the early 1900s.
01:09Blitz damaged buildings, a royal visit and a Goliath crane used to build the new flats at Devonshire Green are just some of the scenes depicted in these nostalgic black and white pictures.
01:22All the photos are shared courtesy of Picture Sheffield.
