00:00Good morning everybody this is Mike Brennan here at the National Hurricane Center it's
00:03just after 11 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday July 2nd coming on with an
00:06update on powerful Hurricane Beryl category 5 storm moving across the
00:11Caribbean Sea we're starting off here with the radar imagery from the National
00:14Weather Service radar located in Puerto Rico you can see the eye of Beryl
00:18hundreds of miles away up very high in the atmosphere moving here steadily off
00:23to the west-northwest at 22 miles per hour right now Beryl is centered about
00:27235 miles southeast of the south coast of the Dominican Republic that's also
00:32just over 550 miles to the east southeast of Kingston Jamaica powerful
00:37category 5 hurricane maximum sustained winds about a hundred and sixty miles
00:41per hour again moving off to the west-northwest at 22 miles per hour you
00:47can see the heavy rain bands starting to affect portions of Puerto Rico but
00:50starting to move in now into portions of the Dominican Republic the good news is
00:54we think this morning that Beryl's intensity has peaked we've seen the
00:57central pressure rise a little bit on the latest data from the Hurricane
01:00Hunter aircraft we've seen the peak winds come down just a tad but
01:04regardless of what happens to the peak winds we're expecting a powerful
01:07hurricane to be moving west-northwestward across the Caribbean
01:10Sea over the next several days this is the forecast out through Friday morning
01:14we're expecting the core of Beryl to pass just south of the south coast of
01:18Haiti as we go through the day today and into tonight we have a hurricane watch
01:23and a tropical storm warning in effect for the southern coast of Haiti tropical
01:26storm warning in effect for portions of the southern Dominican Republic so we
01:29could see hurricane conditions there we are expecting tropical storm conditions
01:33they are expecting very heavy rainfall there as well that we'll talk about we
01:37are most concerned about Jamaica where we expecting the core of a major
01:40hurricane to pass near or over the island during the day tomorrow so we
01:44have a hurricane warning in effect for Jamaica we are expecting a storm surge
01:48of five to eight feet above normal tide levels on the coast of Jamaica especially
01:53concerned in the areas around Kingston those harbors and on the south side of
01:57the island going to be a very very significant wave action on top of that
02:00as well also expecting the possibility of life-threatening flooding due to
02:04heavy rainfall and the potential for devastating impacts if the eyewall of
02:08Beryl moves over the island downstream of that we could see hurricane
02:12conditions possible in the Cayman Islands as we go from Wednesday night
02:16into Thursday morning and then downstream expecting Beryl to still be
02:19a hurricane as it approaches the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico potentially Belize
02:24potentially some impacts even in western Cuba as we go through the day Thursday
02:28Thursday night and into Friday morning so let's step through the risks here
02:33we're talking about again this is the possibility of hurricane conditions over
02:36the next several days possible along the southern coast of Haiti expected in
02:41portions of Jamaica as we go through the day tomorrow also the possibility again
02:46the chances of hurricane force winds in the Cayman Islands and still across the
02:50Yucatan Peninsula Mexico as we get later into the week in terms of the timing of
02:54arrival of those tropical storm force winds expecting them to begin tonight or
02:59later today and tonight along the southern coast of Hispaniola reaching
03:03Jamaica early tomorrow morning so for folks in Jamaica you have today to
03:08complete your preparations follow any advice you've been given by local
03:11officials to get prepared or potential evacuations you want to be in your safe
03:15place where you're going to ride out the storm by nightfall tonight and be
03:18prepared to stay in that location through the day on Wednesday Cayman
03:22Islands we're looking at the arrival of tropical storm force winds Wednesday
03:25evening into Wednesday night western Cuba would be during the day Thursday
03:29and Thursday evening in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico of Mexico on the
03:34rainfall front very concerned about heavy rainfall this is a big hazard in
03:37the Caribbean especially with the mountainous islands the areas of
03:40topography here we could be looking at isolated amounts as high as six to eight
03:44inches and portions of the southwestern part of the Dominican Republic Central
03:49Dominican Republic six inches isolated amounts as high as 10 to 12 inches along
03:53the southwestern peninsula of Haiti isolated amounts as high as 12 inches in
03:57Jamaica as well with widespread totals of four to eight inches this could cause
04:00life-threatening flash floods and mudslides and some of these areas farther
04:04downstream the potential for heavy rainfall in the Cayman Islands and into
04:07Mexico as well now let's take a little bit of a step back out and we'll look at
04:12the longer range forecast you know where is barrel gonna go as we get into
04:15the weekend there's less certainty in the forecast track and intensity of the
04:19storm it'll depend on how much it interacts with land just how strong
04:23barrel be how much time it spends over Jamaica how much of the Yucatan
04:27Peninsula moves over and then the steering currents get a little weaker as
04:30we move into the weekend and barrel moves into the southern Gulf of Mexico
04:33we could see a bit of a slow and for slowing down of the forward speed a bit
04:37more of a northward turn so by the time we get into late Saturday or early
04:41Sunday barrel could be in the vicinity of northeastern Mexico South Texas and
04:46we'll see how the forecast plays out there as we get later into the weekend
04:50and into next week but folks in the Texas coast as we go into the holiday
04:54weekend here with the 4th of July coming up you're gonna want to make sure you
04:57check back on the forecast as we go through the holiday weekend and make
05:00sure you're ready for any potential impacts if we were to see tropical storm
05:04conditions affect those areas in the far western Gulf of Mexico it could would be
05:09during the day on Saturday at this point so again a couple of things we
05:13want to emphasize reemphasize the key messages for barrel it's expected to
05:16remain a powerful hurricane as it moves across the Caribbean Sea a hurricane
05:20warning in effect for Jamaica that's where we could have multiple life
05:23threatening hazards dangerous winds in the core of a major hurricane life
05:27threatening storm surge life-threatening flash flooding from heavy rainfall again
05:31in Jamaica you want to complete those preparations today be in your safe place
05:34by tonight and be prepared to ride out the storm there tomorrow downstream
05:38concerns about the Cayman Islands Mexico as well also short-term concerns for
05:44heavy rainfall tropical storm conditions possibility of hurricane conditions
05:47along the southwestern peninsula of Haiti again interests farther downstream
05:52Belize Yucatan Peninsula the western Gulf Coast need to monitor barrel a
05:55reminder to that we have Spanish language products on hurricanes gov
05:59including the key messages that you see here the public advisory the tropical
06:03cyclone discussion all that public information is being automatically
06:07translated and posted to hurricanes gov for Spanish-speaking portion of our
06:12customer base and population throughout the Caribbean as we move towards Mexico
06:16and the western Gulf region so a reminder please stay tuned to
06:21hurricanes gov for more information throughout the day listen to any advice
06:25you're being given by your local officials and stay tuned for more we'll
06:28be back later on with additional updates on barrel I'm Mike Brennan here at the
06:31National Hurricane Center
