First Democratic Lawmaker Calls for Biden to Withdraw from 2024 Election Amid Fears of Trump 'Authoritarian Era'

Representative Lloyd Doggett of Texas was the first sitting Democratic lawmaker to formally call on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race against Donald Trump. Doggett urged Biden to "make the painful and difficult decision to withdraw" due to concerns over Biden's debate performance against Trump and polls showing Biden trailing Trump in key states. Doggett warned that if re-elected, Trump could usher in an "authoritarian era" unchecked by the courts or a "submissive Republican Congress." Biden and his campaign have said he plans to stay in the race.
