00:00We go through a lot of bodily changes as we age.
00:06Our skin wrinkles, our bones depreciate, and studies have even found that we actually shrink.
00:11Well, according to a new comprehensive study of our pupils, it turns out those get smaller
00:16as our years get greater as well.
00:18This was something laboratory studies have found previously.
00:21This is the first time researchers have strapped GoPros to the heads of participants and sent
00:25them out into the real world to see if it happens there too.
00:28Researchers found that the size of one's pupils can shrink by as much as 0.4 mm every
00:33ten years.
00:34And this can add up, with the researchers saying that between young and old people,
00:37there can be a several millimeters difference in pupil size during changing light environments
00:41between the age groups.
00:42And this is probably why older people struggle with seeing when the light is dim, as their
00:46pupils do not widen as much to allow in more light.
00:49Previously, researchers have attempted to isolate what causes the pupils to expand,
00:54whether it was simply light intensity or if certain wavelengths play a part.
00:57However, this new study is also important as it reveals other real-world scenarios,
01:02which might cause pupils to dilate or retract as well.
01:05The researchers say this work might eventually be used to develop better lighting solutions
01:09for aging individuals.
