00:00These are the unique stories about the fish here in Amazing Earth.
00:05This is not a Martian invader.
00:07This is the life of a Blackwater diver and award-winning underwater photographer,
00:12Scott Gutsy Tuazon, in the Philippines.
00:31Did you see those two?
00:33Their eyes are red and their gills are almost black.
00:38Don't worry, this is not a Martian invader.
00:41This is the life of a Blackwater diver and award-winning underwater photographer,
00:46Scott Gutsy Tuazon, in the Philippines.
00:51The jellyfish is actually feeding on tiny little shrimp.
00:59They're most likely krill.
01:01Hey, there's more!
01:03I think they're going to compete in the Best in National Costume Competition.
01:07That is a sub-adult crocodile needlefish.
01:11Normally, those fish, they stay at the surface.
01:15That's where they usually live and they feed.
01:18One of them is about to be shot even though Christmas is still far away.
01:23But it would be better if you could see the tip of the arrow, right?
01:27You're surprised, right? There's a tip!
01:30It's called a phronema. It's a type of crustacean as well.
01:35Jellyfish, crocodile needlefish, and phronema are just three of the marine animals
01:40that Gutsy encountered while diving last night.
01:44But what is Blackwater diving?
01:47Blackwater diving is basically diving in open ocean at night.
01:57It should be really deep.
02:02At first glance, you'd think that they're floating in space.
02:05They look like they were born on a different planet.
02:09But these animals are really not in space but in the ocean.
02:14These are just a few of the works of the multi-awarded underwater photographer
02:19and Blackwater diving expert, Scott Gutsy Tuazon.
02:24Almost everything was just memorable because you don't get to see that stuff
02:31when you're doing just a regular night dive and day dive.
02:36I'm really a big fan of jellyfish so I love all sorts of jellyfish.
02:40Tubataha, one time I had a tripod fish.
02:44The diamond squid is another fascinating creature that I really like.
02:51The larval fish that you see underwater during Blackwater is really interesting.
02:57There's really a lot of memorable creatures and I still haven't seen it all.
03:02When it comes to Blackwater diving, the Philippines is still irreplaceable.
03:08You know, Anilao is really, it's so close and it's one of the best for me.
03:14Aurora province, Pacific side is also nice.
03:18Every time I run trips to Tubataha, I always make it a point to do Blackwater there as well.
03:35Good buoyancy skills is the most important for me.
03:38If you don't watch your buoyancy, you can find yourself just drifting down
03:42to depths that you probably shouldn't be at in the middle of the ocean at night.
03:47If you thought that Blackwater diving is just a simple hobby or recreational activity,
03:53think again.
03:55There are a lot of people like Gatsy in our ocean studies.
04:01It helps a lot with the scientists because a lot of scientists don't actually get to go out in the field, right?
04:09So the only thing is we're not collecting specimens, but we're taking photos.
04:13And scientists are seeing new types of behavior, seeing new types of species,
04:19seeing new types of relationships.
04:22So that's why a lot of the scientists have joined the Blackwater photo group on Facebook
04:28because they realize the advantage of being able to see all these photographs day in and day out.
04:40Salamat sa Blackwater diver at underwater photographer na tulad ni Gatsy Tuazon,
