00:00Money may not be able to buy you happiness, but it can certainly be used to purchase the most lavish, ornate, or beautiful things ever created.
00:09From diamond-encrusted watch fobs, to artwork, cars, and even fish, these are the 15 most expensive luxury items in the world.
00:17Watches have for a long time been not only a wearable way to tell the time, but a loud way of showing off your wealth,
00:31with many different brands offering timepieces worth tens of thousands of dollars that in some cases have unbelievable capabilities.
00:39But the most expensive watch available isn't so practical, and is instead the flashiest object you could ever wear around your wrist.
00:47Rather than having a GPS tracker or the ability to summon a rescue crew anywhere on Earth,
00:52the $55 million hallucination is instead rather light on features, as it's only able to show you the time, but it is extremely heavy in other ways.
01:02That's because it has 110 carats of extremely rare diamonds in a range of colors such as fancy vivid yellow, fancy intense pink, fancy green, and fancy orange,
01:12all of which are set into a platinum bracelet.
01:15There are a variety of cuts too, including heart shapes, pear, emerald, radiant, and round,
01:21and the watch face itself is a small quartz dial that's framed with a ring of pink diamonds.
01:26Made by Graff Diamonds, it's a one-of-a-kind, and was created to show the company's creative abilities with valuable stones,
01:33but anyone lucky enough to wear it will undoubtedly stand out as the belle of the ball wherever they go.
01:45Tuna is one of the most popular species of seafood around the world, but then there's a vast difference in the quality and desirability of the different types.
01:53The tuna you buy in a can at the store, for example, is normally longfin tuna,
01:58which is an abundant variety in oceans around the world that are fast-growing and relatively small in size.
02:03Bluefin tuna, however, grow to huge proportions, in some cases weighing as much as 990 pounds, or 450 kilograms, and measuring up to 9.8 feet long.
02:14And it's these that are the most popular with discerning clients, particularly for making sushi, and is the type you'll find at the higher-end establishments.
02:22Perfect bluefin tuna has an intensely marbled flesh and, when aged properly, has a stunning balance of flavors,
02:29which means the best specimens can command crazy prices.
02:32The current world record was set in 2019 at the first tuna auction of that year in Japan.
02:38The owner of one of the most prestigious sushi chains bought a 613-pound fish that had been caught off the Japanese coast for a whopping $3.1 million,
02:47something even he admitted was probably a little too much.
02:58There's nothing quite as luxurious as hanging a classic piece of artwork on the walls of your mansion,
03:04and if you've got a spare $450.3 million, you could own the most expensive painting to ever be sold at auction,
03:11the Salvatore Mundi, which was painted by Leonardo da Vinci at some point between 1499 and 1510.
03:18The painting is of Jesus, who is wearing a Renaissance-style blue dress and is making the sign of the cross with his right hand, and holding a crystal orb in his left.
03:27Said to represent his being the savior of the world and the celestial sphere of the heavens,
03:32the painting was sold by Christie's in New York in 2017 to a buyer on behalf of Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism.
03:39Originally intended to be put on display, it hasn't been seen in the public since then,
03:44and there's subsequently been debate within the art world surrounding its authenticity.
03:48Some experts believe it was painted by a student of da Vinci's with some help from the master,
03:53and another analysis rejects any involvement by the famed artist at all.
03:57It could well be, then, that the most expensive artwork to ever sell at auction was painted by an unknown artist,
04:03which not only sums up the risk of the art world, but shows what a luxurious extravagance the idea of owning masterpieces can be.
04:1112. Falcon Supernova iPhone 6 Pink Diamond – $48 Million
04:18It seems that every year, as they get larger and more powerful, smartphones are becoming increasingly pricey.
04:25But if you really want to live the life of luxury, then the most expensive of all was actually released in 2014,
04:31when a luxury brand called Falcon made a number of upgrades to an iPhone 6.
04:36Known as the Falcon Supernova iPhone 6 Pink Diamond,
04:40the company started with a $4,500 rose gold version of the phone,
04:44and attached a huge pink diamond on the back to give it a price of $48.5 million.
04:50If that particular aesthetic isn't to your style, there was also an option for using a platinum or 24-karat gold-plated version of the phone,
04:57and a choice of either blue or orange diamonds, which cost $32.5 or $42.5 million, respectively.
05:04If that's a little out of your price range, then there was also the choice of a Burmese ruby, a blue sapphire, a black diamond, or a sapphire,
05:12which made up the company's bespoke collection, and were available for a much more reasonable $4.75 million.
05:2011. Bugatti La Voiture Noire – $18.7 Million
05:26Ever since cars were first invented, they've been available in a huge range of prices.
05:30As the most relied upon mode of transport around the world, most models are targeted at customers in affordable price ranges.
05:36But if you want the best of the best, then it's going to cost substantially more.
05:41Supercars with outrageously powerful engines, futuristic technology, and design features that make them turn heads wherever you go,
05:49will normally cost far in excess of $100,000, but the most expensive brand new car to ever be built was listed at many times that.
05:58Made by legendary constructor Bugatti, the vehicle known as La Voiture Noire, which means the black car, was an homage to the company's Type 57 SC Atlantic.
06:08With a recognizable Bugatti styling, it's an incredible machine that's fitted with a 1,479-brake-horsepower 16-cylinder engine,
06:16and is one of, if not the fastest, road-legal car in the world.
06:21The company also made one of these with a list price of $18.7 million, and no sooner had they announced it than it had been sold to an unnamed buyer.
06:30According to Bugatti, the average buyer of one of their vehicles has around 30 cars already,
06:35which means this was almost certainly bought as an investment and collector's item, as opposed to one that would be used on a daily basis.
06:4310. Magnetic Floating Bed, $1.6 Billion
06:48Most people will spend as much as a third of their lives in their beds, so it makes sense that we do everything we can to make them as comfortable as possible.
06:57Most of us focus on how many springs the mattresses have, the thread count of the sheets, or any extra features that are included,
07:04such as reclining models or one with inbuilt TVs.
07:07But for a truly luxurious experience, there's always the option of a floating bed.
07:12Designed by Jan-Jaap Roosenaars, a Dutch architect, it doesn't require any electricity, and instead relies on magnetism.
07:20The magnets in the bed are repelled by the ones that are installed in the floor, and it's held in place on a cable on each corner.
07:27According to the designer, it took seven years to develop, and intentionally resembles the Monolith from 2001, a space odyssey.
07:34Capable of holding up to 1,500 pounds or 680 kilograms in weight, and said to feel like you're sleeping on a cloud, this is surely $1.6 million well-spent.
07:479. Manhattan Parking Space, $1 Million
07:51No matter if you've bought yourself a flashy car, or if you've opted for something simpler, then there's one thing you're always going to need, somewhere to park it.
07:59Space can be at somewhat of a premium in heavily built-up areas, however,
08:03and most drivers will often find themselves finding it impossible to legally leave their vehicle near to where they need to go,
08:09or being forced to pay ridiculously high prices to leave it in a parking lot.
08:14In New York, a private parking space is quickly becoming one of the most prized status symbols of all,
08:19and in 2015, it was revealed that two new condo developments were offering the ability to buy a permanent one for a cool $1 million.
08:27One of the developments at 42 Crosby Street had 10 underground spaces on offer on a first-come, first-served basis,
08:34but with the penthouses being sold for $9 or $10 million, what's another one in the grand scheme of things?
08:40Each of the spaces is between 150 to 200 square feet, which makes them more costly than the apartments themselves at around $5,000 per square foot.
08:49Interestingly, it's the equivalent to receiving a standard $115 parking ticket every day for the next 22 years.
09:04One of the must-have objects for any billionaire is a private yacht,
09:08but while a vessel that costs $10 or $20 million is usually enough for most people, the price can rise significantly to more than that.
09:15The current record holder for the world's most expensive yacht is the History Supreme, which was revealed in 2018,
09:21but had been sold to a Malaysian businessman in 2011.
09:25The most surprising thing about the yacht, though, is that it isn't the longest, the fastest, or the most feature-rich one to have ever been built,
09:32and the eye-watering $4.8 billion price tag solely comes from the fittings that have been used in its decor.
09:38The base of the yacht, along with the main deck, the dining areas, the rails, and the anchor are all covered in a total of more than 220,000 pounds of gold,
09:48which includes a custom-designed panoramic wall aquarium that itself is gold-plated.
09:53If that's not enough, the bedrooms are adorned with platinum, and it came with a smartphone covered in 500-cut diamonds
10:00and a luxury liquor bottle with an 18.5-carat diamond set into it.
10:04But the most surprising addition of all is the statue on board that's made with genuine thighbone fragments of a Tyrannosaurus rex fossil.
10:18Jeff Koons is one of the most successful living artists in the world right now,
10:22and if you want a striking piece of pop art to become a central focus on the grounds of your mansion, then one of his sculptures is the ideal choice.
10:30One of his designs, the Balloon Dog in Orange, is the most expensive one to have ever been sold by an artist who is still alive,
10:38setting the record in 2013 when it sold for $58.4 million.
10:43Made from mirror-polished stainless steel that's covered with a slightly transparent colored coating,
10:48it's one of a series of five versions of a balloon animal, which each have a unique color variant.
10:53According to the artist, the idea of these sculptures is to celebrate simpler times,
10:57and in the case of the Balloon Dogs, something that would be greeted with cheers if it were at a child's birthday party.
11:03Stretching 10 feet or 3 meters tall and weighing over a ton each, they are definitely far more weighty than they look,
11:09and it's a testament to the artist's ability that the sculptures have been made in a way that they almost look weightless.
11:18One Star Shoes by Antonio Vietri, $20 million.
11:22Shoes are undoubtedly one of the most popular luxury items in the world, and you can spend as much on them as you want.
11:29They range from the affordable, which most of us will have for day-to-day use, to designer ones that can cost several hundreds or thousands of dollars,
11:37but things can keep getting far more expensive than that.
11:40Nick Cannon once famously spent a reported $2 million on his diamond-encrusted shoes,
11:46but even that doesn't come close to the current record holder for the world's most expensive shoes.
11:51That goes to the design called Moon Stars, which were created by Italian designer Antonio Vietri, and are valued at just under $20 million.
12:00But how could a pair of shoes be worth that much?
12:03The answer, of course, is because of the materials that were used to make them.
12:07They include heels that are made from solid 24-karat gold, 30 carats of diamonds that are placed throughout,
12:13and even pieces of a meteorite that landed in Argentina in 1576.
12:18So far, it's unknown if the designer has actually managed to sell them to anybody, or whether anyone has ever been trusted enough to wear them.
12:25So while these are easily the most valuable shoes in the world, no one knows if they're actually comfortable or not.
12:32Number 5. Ferrari 250 GTO, $70 million
12:38Car enthusiasts and collectors are incredibly passionate about their past times,
12:43and chase after the rarest, most impactful, and stunning car designs in history.
12:47Ferraris are, of course, one of the most popular marquees, because the Italian manufacturer has such an established reputation.
12:54So it's perhaps no surprise that the most expensive car to ever be sold was made by them.
12:59The 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO was the car that won the Tour de France the year after it was built,
13:06and its owners have taken extraordinary care of it in the past 58 years, with it never having been even in a minor collision.
13:13This is particularly impressive, considering the car has a racing pedigree,
13:18having also competed in the 1963 Le Mans 24-hour race, and that year's Angolan Grand Prix.
13:24And it was in such good condition that when it was sent to restores in the 1990s,
13:28they only had to perform light work on the upholstery and paint.
13:31The car was most recently offered at auction in 2018, at which time it sold for an astonishing $70 million,
13:38which was roughly double the price of the previous record holder, which itself was another Ferrari 250 GTO.
13:46Number 4. The Dream Jet BBJ 787, $300 million
13:52There's no more luxurious way to fly than in your own personal private jet.
13:57There's a wide range of different aircraft available that are designed specifically for this purpose.
14:02If you want to go above and beyond the normal, however, you could consider buying a commercial airliner and refit the interior,
14:09which is exactly what happened in 2018 when aviation group Deere Jet bought the world's only Dreamliner 787 in a VIP configuration.
14:18Normally intended to accommodate around 250 passengers, there's a huge amount of room in the cabin,
14:24and the designers have used this to full effect.
14:26With two large tables and sofas that move position by remote control,
14:30the main lounge has space for up to 16 guests in the utmost of luxury,
14:35while the fully separated master bedroom feels more like what you'd expect in a high-end hotel,
14:40with a bathroom that has a shower with 200 gallons of water, meaning you could keep it running for the whole of an international flight.
14:47There's room, too, for extra guests in the rear cabin that has 16 seats in this business-class-like configuration,
14:53and of course, if you have a jet like this, it's most likely you'll have a team of staff that you take with you wherever you go,
14:59and it has a further six premium economy seats for them, too.
15:03Surely, this is all a bargain for just $300 million.
15:08Number 3. Focal Utopia by Tournaire, $120,000
15:14Headphone technology has improved dramatically in recent years,
15:18with the release of a number of wireless earbud designs,
15:21and ones created to give the best audio experience that money can buy.
15:24But the most expensive headphones currently on the market don't exactly prioritize sound quality as much as they focus on sheer bling.
15:32Known as the Focal Utopia, they were created by French jeweler Maison Tournaire,
15:37and are based around the designer's trilogy symbol that represents the three different stages of life, past, present, and future.
15:43Based on a set of focal headphones, with the company's bespoke high-fidelity speaker drivers and loudspeakers,
15:49Tournaire has added 18 karat gold over the exterior, along with six karats of diamonds, all of which were handcrafted at their workshop.
15:56Amazingly, this all gives the Focal Utopia headphones a list price of $120,000,
16:02and that's before you consider any of the accessories.
16:05You can, for example, also buy a stand for them, which will set you back a further $12,000.
16:09And the company also plans to not only create new or more elaborate versions,
16:13but also offers display cases matching phones and music players.
16:24Artworks that sell at auctions often make the world's headlines because the sales are conducted in public,
16:29but most of the time, pieces exchange hands through private sales.
16:33Many of these are conducted in complete secrecy.
16:35The most expensive painting to ever be knowingly sold privately like this is called the Nafaefa Ipoipo,
16:41which was purchased in February of 2015 for $210 million,
16:46although experts believe this has likely been surpassed a number of times in deals that haven't yet become public knowledge.
16:52The oil painting, which was created by the French post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin in 1892,
16:58was inspired by his experiences on a trip to Tahiti in the previous year.
17:02At the time, many artists were painting so-called primitive art,
17:06which were essentially derogatory images of cultures seen as being behind the Western world,
17:11and Gauguin had wanted to visit Tahiti to capture its true essence.
17:15To his surprise, the country had undergone a period of upheaval after the introduction of various illnesses by visitors,
17:21so was by then a far more international community than he had expected.
17:26So this piece, which translates to When Will You Marry?,
17:29was in many ways the type of image he had been trying to move away from.
17:33Based on what the art-buying public would have wanted rather than any sense of reality,
17:37it depicts two women who are wearing white flowers behind their ears to indicate that they are looking for husbands.
17:49For most people, a home is a necessity and not so much a luxury.
17:54But when you're one of the richest people in the world,
17:56you can design and create your own bespoke dwelling in virtually any location you choose.
18:01The most expensive private home in the world is Antilia,
18:04which is owned by Mukesh Ambani and is an Indian billionaire,
18:07and its position near one of the poorest neighborhoods in Mumbai
18:10makes it an opulent shrine to the vast wealth inequality in the country.
18:15The $2 billion, 27-story structure, which is 569 feet tall,
18:20has more than 400,000 square feet of interior space,
18:24which seems almost crazy considering there's only a handful of family members that live there.
18:29As you'd expect, the house has virtually every amenity you could possibly expect, and more.
18:34There's a 50-seat theater, private terraced gardens, a swimming pool, a spa, a health center,
18:39a temple, and even a snow room, where snowflakes are released from inside the walls.
18:44There's a theme of lotus flowers and the sun throughout the interior,
18:48and the top six floors are designated as private quarters for the family.
18:52The other 21 floors are for the staff that are required to run the home,
18:56with space for as many as 600 of them to live and work.
18:59On the top floors of Antilia, there are three helipads,
19:02but these are yet to actually be used, and they haven't been certified by the local aviation and defense authorities.
19:08But the internal garage, with space for 168 cars,
19:11more than makes up for the travel needs of the people living and visiting the house.
19:15Nine high-speed elevators grant quick access to any of the floors,
19:19and the entire structure was even built to be able to withstand earthquakes that measure up to a magnitude 8.
19:24It is, without a doubt, the most luxurious home in the world, but it hasn't been without its controversies.
19:30The land on which it was built was previously the site of an orphanage,
19:33which was paid just a fraction of what it was believed to be worth,
19:36and the building is so often held up as an example of wealthy Indians' lack of empathy for the poor.
19:42It's because of this that it's often been the target of protesters,
19:45and in 2021, a car was found near to the entrance that contained 20 explosive gelatine sticks,
19:51as well as a threatening note, something that could have caused serious damage if it had made it all the way inside.
19:56In a sign of just how controversial the building is,
19:59one of the local heads of police have now been accused of being involved in the plot.
