00:00What's up guys, my name's Brandon and welcome back to Apple Weekly. In this episode, we're
00:04going to discuss even more iOS 18 features and changes. We're going to talk about why the next
00:10Apple Watch might be a letdown, why Apple did not want anything to do with meta for their Apple
00:15intelligence, Samsung is not even trying to hide their inspiration from Apple, a crazy AirTag
00:20story, and much more. So as always, if you want to stay updated with everything going on in the
00:24world of Apple, be sure to hit that subscribe button down below and check out the free Apple
00:29Den newsletter. All right, so let's start with even more iOS 18 features and changes. And the
00:34first thing I want to talk about is RCS support is finally on the iPhone and you can see it in
00:40action right here. So I am texting with somebody on an Android and we can see the red receipts and
00:45it's not a bug because it shows the time. Now we have our typing indicator. I've also sent videos
00:50and receive videos and they are in full quality and they're not compressed to death like they
00:55were through SMS and MMS. And you can see it also shows RCX in the text box down there before you
01:02start typing. So RCS support has officially been added and it's actually active on iOS 18 beta 2.
01:09Now keep in mind, this does only currently work in the US and also it's only for Verizon, AT&T,
01:15and T-Mobile at the moment. And this does also work with group chats. Of course, we don't have
01:20the 160 character limits anymore. We can see tap back emojis. All of that now works with RCS. It's
01:27also a little bit more secure. It's not as secure as iMessage because it's not as encrypted and it's
01:33not as privacy focused as iMessages, but, and that's why the messages are still green. They're
01:38not blue, but it is still better. Anything is better at this point than SMS. So this is great
01:43to see in the podcast application. We have a nice addition to the scrubber here. So if you scrub to
01:48fast forward or rewind, you can see that the chapter markers now appear. And when you go over
01:54these chapter markers, it will show what it is along with the timestamp below. And it will also,
02:00you know, it shows you the full sentence there. It does have movement in the animation as well.
02:05So if I hover over a here, it shows everything in that title. And if I let go, it stays there
02:11for a moment and then goes back. So that's a nice little touch in the podcast app. And then as far
02:15as music goes, the music haptics seem to be working better here in iOS 18 beta two. So we've
02:20always had the settings menu inside of our settings. So if you go into the accessibility
02:27section here, so if we go into accessibility and then down here to music haptics, that menu is not
02:32new. That was there in beta one. The only thing that has changed is the red icon. The glyph icon
02:38has changed, but this menu is not new. It's just easier to access now and has that new glyph icon.
02:43But I've noticed that music haptics appear to be working better when you're actually on the now
02:47playing screen. It is still kind of broken from the control center, but you can see I can tap it
02:51and turn it off much better than it was in beta one. And while we're in the settings, if we go
02:56into our general section and then down here to keyboard, we have a new toggle for show math
03:02results. So if you do not want the math notes feature working, when you're typing something
03:06on the keyboard, you can disable that by turning off show math results. Also new with the math
03:12notes is if you start drawing out the math notes and put an equal sign, it no longer shows the
03:17answer to that math question right away. So it didn't work there. I guess my typing is just that
03:22bad. So we're going to try this again. We'll type in the equals and you will see that now it shows
03:27solve. So it no longer shows the little animation of the result coming in. We now get this new pop
03:32up here that says solve with a new little equal sign glyph icon there, and it pops out the math
03:38problem that you have. And if you press on solve, then it will show you the answer. Now, if you're
03:42somebody who uses tinted icons on iOS 18, which is when you go to edit right here and then go to
03:48customize. If you go to tinted right here, you will notice that the tinted icons do look a bit
03:53better. So you can see there's kind of more depth to the colors. So they look a little bit better.
03:58I'm still not a huge fan of the tinted icons. I just like the dark theme. That's my favorite,
04:02especially now that we have the app store fixed in beta two, but tinted icons are better in beta
04:08two than they were in beta one. Now I did also want to touch on a new lock screen action that
04:13I did not cover. So if you go to customize here and then go to the lock screen and then tap on
04:17the plus right here, we have a new lock screen toggle and this one is for quick notes. So if
04:22we go down to the notes section, you can see we now have a quick notes option. So you can now tap
04:27on the little action down there on the lock screen and that will invoke a new
04:31quick note. So it will pop up right here on the lock screen. You don't even have to go into your
04:36device, which is nice. If we head into the wallet application and tap on the plus icon in the top
04:40right and go to add a debit or credit card, we have a new UI here. So if you tap on continue,
04:46you can see that this UI looks way better than what we had on iOS 17. So we have this
04:52cool little animated UI and it says hold near card. So you can now add your card via NFC by
04:59just simply tapping it up against the phone. And this is the new default method of adding a card
05:04now since most cards these days do have NFC built in. So it's going to make your life easier,
05:08but if you did want to enter the card details manually, there's also a button for that down
05:12there as well. And then also in the wallet app, if you go to your Apple pay cash card and then go to
05:18send or request and go to tap to cash, you will notice that this is now active. So this was not
05:24working in beta one, but now this is working in beta two. And here's what the UI looks like when
05:30you put in a dollar amount and you are ready to send. And then speaking of the wallet application,
05:34we have a new wallet widget in iOS 18 beta two for connected cards. So this allows you to see
05:41your balance and card details for connected accounts. So this does not work for every card
05:46out there. I know it does work for MasterCard and some others, but you can add that and see
05:50if it works for you. Also new in iOS 18 beta two is if you go to your control center or in settings
05:55and go to the background sounds, we have two new sounds with iOS 18. We have night and fire. Now,
06:02these were there and beta one, but when you tapped on them, nothing would play. But now in iOS 18
06:07beta two, they are enabled. So now when you tap on them, you will hear that sound and they both
06:12sound terrific. These are probably my two favorite sounds now of all the background sounds.
06:17So definitely try them out if you are a fan of this feature. Also new in iOS and especially
06:22iPad iOS 18 beta two is the ability to format external drives. So this was just recently found
06:29this week that in the files application, if you right click or hold on an external drive and
06:35select erase, you now have new options for reformatting the drive. Now in the photos
06:40application, we have a few things I want to talk about. So number one, if you go down to your
06:44utilities and you have the hidden and recently deleted albums before, if you tapped on those,
06:49it would just automatically go to scan your face and then you would get access to that hidden or
06:54recently deleted album. But now you have to press again to go to view album and then scan your face
07:01and then you'll be let in to the album. So I'm not sure if that's a bug or an intended feature,
07:05but that is something new here in beta two. I also noticed that the animations are smoother
07:10in the photos app and beta two. So if you go into a photo and then swipe down to go out of it,
07:15we just have a much more fluid animation there. Everything just feels a bit smoother.
07:19Also, if you go to a photo and if you add a previous photo to an album and then you go to
07:23another photo and tap on the share sheet, you now get a prompt to add that photo or video to that
07:28same album that you just added the previous photo or video too. And I did also want to ask you guys
07:33just what are your overall thoughts on the photos app and iOS 18? I asked this over on X or Twitter
07:38and I got a lot of people responding telling me they did not like the application. So I'm curious
07:43to know what you think about the photos app. Let me know in a comment down below if you like it,
07:47why, if you don't like it, why also this week we got a new firmware update for all AirPods.
07:52So we have six F eight as the new firmware version for the AirPods pro second generation.
07:58Now this update just addresses a security issue that could have allowed an attacker within
08:03Bluetooth range to spoof the details of a device that you've previously connected to.
08:08And that's going to allow the hacker to gain access to your headphones. So this was very
08:13unlikely to happen in the first place, but that is what this update was pushed out for. And that
08:17was for all AirPods. Now, as far as bugs go with iOS 18 beta two, there are quite a few bugs. I
08:23think the most obvious one, the most popular bug on iOS 18 beta two is the one that you're seeing
08:27right now where the app icons just simply do not show up until you go into it and go out of it.
08:33And then you can see we have the icon showing up again. So that was beta two in a nutshell. I had
08:38that multiple times on my device. And I know a lot of you guys did as well, but overall,
08:43aside from that, there are a few other issues, but I think overall it is pretty much on par
08:49with beta one. And I say that because I feel like the animations are better in beta two
08:53and the overall fluidity is better in beta two, but the performance is pretty much the same as
08:59beta one, if not even a little bit worse. And we have more UI bugs and UI glitches than we had in
09:04beta one. So I posted a comment on my what's new video for beta two, just informing you guys,
09:10just preparing you to know that beta two updates for the 0.0 software, like 17.08, 18.0, the beta
09:18of that software is historically going back multiple years is historically worse than beta
09:23one. And it looks like myself, you know, I don't think it's too much worse than beta one, but I
09:27know a lot of you guys have reached out and mentioned that it is worse than beta one.
09:31That's kind of why I wanted to post that comment, just informing you before you installed it to know
09:35that historically beta twos are worse than beta ones. I know it's counterintuitive, but usually
09:39it starts improving again after we hit beta three, which is around the time we will see the public
09:44beta. And we'll talk about that in a moment. Now I did also want to touch on the geek bench scores,
09:49because I found this pretty interesting as well. I did run a geek bench score here or geek bench
09:54test. And I scored a 2854 on the single core, which is good. It's not as good as iOS 17,
10:00but you can see that the multi-core score was 6928, which is super low. Like look back in June,
10:07you know, all these different times I ran these scores, I got over a 7,000, well over 7,000,
10:12and every one of these. So for some reason I got a really low score for that run on iOS 18,
10:18beta two. So the geek bench scores tell me that it's still not as good as beta one in terms of
10:23raw performance. Even this test right here from June 21st on iOS 18, beta one was significantly
10:29better on both single core and on multi-core. So yeah, no surprise for me. I was expecting
10:34beta two to be a bit worse than beta one, but hopefully we do see that improve with a beta three.
10:40Now, as far as the battery life goes, battery life has actually gotten a little bit better for
10:44a lot of you guys. I've been seeing your comments. A lot of you guys have said that battery life has
10:48gotten better for me. I feel like it's still similar to beta one. It might be a tiny bit
10:53better, but it's still like not very good. Like the battery life is still pretty bad on iOS 18
10:59at beta two, which is to be expected. We're on a early beta of a radically different software
11:04version than iOS 17 in terms of the control center, the home screen, or the new icons,
11:08all of that, the photos app. So battery life still not great. You can see how I've been doing here
11:13over the last 24 hours. And especially the last 10 days, I've been using pretty much a hundred
11:17percent of my battery every single day, which is not usually a good sign. I have been on my phone
11:22a little bit more than I should be, but still not a great sign when we're seeing that much battery
11:27consumption. Okay. So now let's talk about when to expect iOS 18 beta three. Now I would expect
11:32iOS 18 beta three in two weeks. So we're looking at the week of July 8th. So typically we see
11:39beta softwares on Tuesdays, but as we saw with beta two, it is a possibility to come on a Monday
11:46as well. However, I'm going to stick to my gut and stick to what Apple does historically and
11:50say that we're going to see beta three on a Tuesday. I think Apple's going to go back to
11:54Tuesdays. So we could see it on July 8th or the ninth, but I'm going to predict we're going to
11:58see it on July 9th. Now we could see the new public beta or the first public beta for iOS 18
12:05come out that week as well, or we could see it the next week on the week of July 15th. And like
12:11I've mentioned before, that's typically when we start to see a much more stable build of iOS 18,
12:16like it's still going to be in beta. So it's not going to be perfect, but usually around the public
12:20beta time is when I say it's fine for everybody pretty much to use on their main device without
12:25worrying about too many issues like we have here in beta two. All right, so now let's move on to
12:30the latest Apple news and let's start with the big news from this week that was really odd news,
12:35honestly, because we saw two conflicting reports and this is related to meta and Apple. So there
12:39was an early report from the wall street journal that said they reported that Apple was in active
12:45talks with meta to integrate their llama LLM into iOS 18 Apple intelligence. And everybody thought
12:53that was strange because Apple and meta are very known to be rivals, but it was the wall street
12:58journal. So everybody believed it. But then just a couple of days later, Bloomberg came out, basically
13:03saying that that's not the case and they're wrong. And those talks are no longer active. But not only
13:08that, Apple was never seriously considering a partnership in the first place and why you might
13:14ask, well, I'll let you take one guess. Yes, privacy. Apple decided not to move forward with
13:19formal meta discussions in parts because it doesn't see that company's privacy practices
13:24as stringent enough. And plus Apple sees chat GPT as a superior offering and Google as an easy
13:31future partner because of their existing partnership with having that as the default
13:35search engine on iPhones, iPads, and everything else. So yeah, big surprise. Apple is not going
13:41to be including metas llama LLM into iOS 18 via Apple intelligence. However, we could still see
13:47Gemini and other models get added to iOS 18 or future versions of iOS and to add on to Apple
13:53intelligence to give users more of a variety of models to choose from, but that's yet to be seen.
13:58Okay. So now let's talk about the Apple watch series 10 or Apple watch X, because there's been
14:02a lot of hype about this for the past, like two years or maybe more because we saw that there was
14:06going to be a radical redesign. There was going to be a change to the way that the bands go on.
14:11It's going to be magnetic. We heard so many crazy rumors, but it looks like none of that might be
14:15happening. And I say this because 91 mobiles claims to have sourced CAD renders for the Apple
14:22watch X or the Apple watch series 10 from industry insiders. And you can see that it just has a
14:28larger display. It's a two inch display. That's similar to the Apple watch ultra is actually
14:33bigger than the Apple watch ultra. So it'd be the biggest screen on an Apple watch, but it doesn't
14:38look radically different. It still has the same design and you can see the little grooves right
14:42there. So we have the same watch band, you know, a system it looks like, so it doesn't look like
14:48we're going to be switching, but if this, if this is true, if this, you know, these CAD renders are
14:52true, if they turn out to be legit, then it looks like we might not be getting that magnetic clamp
14:56style of Apple watch bands, at least not this year. So we'll have to wait and see, but I think
15:01that's pretty, a pretty big letdown for people who have been waiting on a big radical redesign
15:06to the Apple watch. But again, keep in mind, it's still early. We're going to have a lot
15:10more leaks and rumors before the actual Apple watch gets released in September. And then speaking
15:15of the Apple watch, we have to mention the upcoming galaxy watch ultra and the galaxy buds three pro,
15:21because these just recently got leaked this week. And, uh, yeah, they look kind of familiar. They
15:26look pretty much just like the Apple watch ultra on both the front and the back. I mean, even the
15:31colors are like the same, like, like Samsung's not even trying to hide it at this point that
15:35they're just straight up copying the design from Apple. So that's pretty crazy. And then
15:40the galaxy buds three pro and the galaxy buds three, the regular version, these also look
15:45familiar. They look just like the AirPods. They do have the color coordinated tips or the bottom
15:50are color coordinated for left and right, which I think is a really cool idea. But other than that,
15:54very similar to the AirPods as well. So what do you think about these? I will probably be getting
15:58these in the studio and comparing them to the Apple products, but I just thought it was funny
16:02how blatant, you know, how blatantly obvious it was that Samsung is ripping off these Apple
16:07designs. So the way I see it is Samsung steals Apple designs and Apple steals the Samsung
16:12features. So both are stealing just in different ways. So just pretty funny. But that of course
16:16is how we get the best of the best, you know, in the tech industry, everybody takes and gets
16:20inspiration from others. So I understand it. I just thought it was funny that it looked so similar
16:24to Apple's latest offerings. And then finally, as tradition, we have another crazy air tag story.
16:29And this time we have a busted car heist operation called Operation Hellcat that started
16:36with the theft of two vehicles at a dealership in Louisiana. And a couple of months after the
16:41theft of those two vehicles, dealerships in the area began reporting that delivered vehicles were
16:46missing key fobs and mysteriously had air tags inside. And it turned out that the surrounding
16:51dealerships all had previously been at this one dealership at one point, the one where the two
16:56cars were stolen, and then they went to the other dealership. So then in December, so several months
17:02later of last year, and then into January of this year, there were multiple attempted vehicle thefts
17:07at the same dealership where those cars were being delivered without key fobs and with air
17:12tags inside. And what the thieves would do is they'd steal the key fob, they'd track the car
17:17on their find my app because the air tag was inside. And then they'd wait until it's in a
17:22location where it can easily be stolen, and then they'd take it. Now at this point, the police knew
17:26who the suspects were and had already arrested some, but they were trying to catch everyone
17:31involved in the operation, which they eventually did. So police ended up arresting six individuals
17:36and obtained search warrants for four residences. And these searches revealed 19 key fobs, burglary
17:43tools, grinders, and three additional air tags, along with evidence of other crimes. The suspects
17:50were all arrested and charged with multiple counts. And that dealership has since stopped
17:55keeping key fobs inside of the vehicles when in transit or sitting on the lots. So that is crazy.
18:01And that's not the first time we've heard of something very similar happening. So just be on
18:05the lookout, even if you work for a dealership, or if you work with something of high value, just keep
18:10an eye out for random anomalies like the key fob missing and an air tag, maybe being inside of one
18:15of those objects. So hope you enjoyed this episode. If you did give it a thumbs up, also subscribe
18:19down below so you don't miss out on next week's video. But anyways, guys, thanks for watching,
18:23and I'll see you next week.
