00:00Monday, July 1st coming on with an update about extremely dangerous Category 4
00:04hurricane Beryl beginning to pull away pretty quickly here from the Windward
00:08Islands. Currently at five o'clock centered about 125 miles to the
00:12northwest of Grenada. Very powerful hurricane, classic looking, well-defined
00:16eye on satellite imagery. Maximum sustained winds are estimated to be
00:19around 150 miles per hour. We switch over to the infrared imagery, again very
00:23classic looking, clear eye with a very cold symmetric thunderstorm activity in
00:28the eye wall around the center. We'll have the NOAA hurricane hunters in the
00:32P-3 aircraft flying into the storm tonight, give us more direct measurements
00:36on just how strong Beryl is, but expected to remain a powerful hurricane for the
00:39next couple of days. We're still seeing impacts in portions of the Windward
00:43Islands. We have tropical storm warnings in effect from St. Vincent and the
00:46Grenadines up northward to Martinique, and we still just in the last hour or so
00:50had a wind gust of 64 miles per hour in St. Lucia. So in some of these rain bands
00:55still very strong gusty winds, still seeing heavy rainfall of three to six
00:59inches, storm total amounts of isolated amounts as high as 10 inches in portions
01:03of the Windward Islands, but the winds are gradually going to diminish here
01:05over the next few hours as Beryl pulls quickly away, moving west-northwest at 21
01:11miles per hour. So the forecast for Beryl continues to take it quickly
01:14west-northwestward to westward across the Caribbean Sea over the next several
01:18days. You can see the track forecast here. With the center of the storm
01:22expected to pass south of Hispaniola on Tuesday and Tuesday night. However, given
01:27the large size of the system, the tropical storm force winds are expected
01:30to reach portions of the southern coast of the Dominican Republic and Haiti
01:34where we have a tropical storm warning in effect. And then on Wednesday, the
01:37center of Beryl is expected to pass near or over Jamaica. We have a hurricane
01:41watch in effect with the worst conditions there expected on Wednesday.
01:44And then after that time, Beryl is going to pass through the northwestern
01:48Caribbean, perhaps coming close to the Cayman Islands, Belize, the Yucatan
01:52Peninsula of Mexico Thursday and Friday, and then moving into the extreme
01:56southern Gulf of Mexico as we get into Saturday. So certainly going to be
02:00impacts across the Caribbean Sea from Beryl over the next several days. One
02:04small piece of good news is that the atmospheric environment is expected to
02:08become less favorable for Beryl to maintain this very high intensity as we
02:12go through the week. But the system is expected to remain a major hurricane
02:15through Tuesday night or Wednesday morning and maintain hurricane strength
02:18all the way until it gets to the Yucatan Peninsula on late Thursday or
02:22Thursday night or early Friday. And Beryl is still forecast to be a rather
02:25potent tropical storm in the southern Gulf of Mexico next weekend. Looking at
02:30the best chances for hurricane conditions, we're most concerned about
02:33Jamaica, where that hurricane warning is in effect. You can see the chances
02:36of hurricane force winds are greatest there, but also a chance of hurricane
02:39force winds as we go out several days into the future. By the time we get
02:42later into the week across the Yucatan Peninsula, looking at the timing of
02:46arrival of those wind hazards in Hispaniola, southern coast of Hispaniola,
02:50the most likely time of arrival of those tropical storm force winds will
02:53be Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday evening, Wednesday morning in Jamaica.
02:57So folks in Jamaica have tomorrow to prepare for potential impacts of a
03:02hurricane. We could see a hurricane warning issued for Jamaica later
03:04tonight on the Cayman Islands would be Wednesday evening and Wednesday night.
03:09And then the time of arrival of sustained tropical storm force winds
03:12along the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize, Mexico would be
03:15Thursday evening, then advancing across the Yucatan Peninsula and
03:18reaching the southern Gulf of Mexico Friday and Friday night on the rainfall
03:23front. Again, barrel was moving rather quickly away from the Windward
03:27Islands. We could still see some isolated totals as high as 10 inches
03:30there. Dominican Republic in Haiti. We could see some areas of seeing 4 to 6
03:34inches of rainfall, especially in the mountainous terrain. Jamaica again 4
03:38to 6, maybe isolated amounts as high as 8 inches. And then that rainfall will
03:42spread westward across the Cayman Islands and move towards the Yucatan
03:45Peninsula as we go later into the week. So as I want to wrap up here, some key
03:49messages. Barrel is a very powerful, dangerous category for hurricane is
03:53still producing tropical storm force winds, dangerous waves, heavy rainfall
03:57across portions of the Windward Islands. Those conditions will gradually start
04:02to diminish this evening as barrel moves quickly away. But we still have
04:05tropical storm warnings in effect for much of the southern Windward Islands
04:08this afternoon. Barrel is forecast to be a powerful hurricane as it moves
04:12across the Caribbean. We have a tropical storm warnings for the south
04:16coast of Hispaniola hurricane watch in effect for Jamaica and hurricane
04:19conditions are going to be possible there on Wednesday. So that's our next
04:23biggest area of concern is in Jamaica and interest in the Cayman Islands,
04:28Belize, Yucatan Peninsula need to monitor the progress of barrel as we go
04:31through the remainder of the week. We may be issuing additional watches and
04:35warnings for those areas in the coming days. So please stay tuned for more
04:39information here at hurricanes dot gov. We've got new forecast information
04:42coming out every six hours. We'll keep you updated on what the aircraft find
04:46tonight and check back for more updates here on the hurricane on hurricane
04:49barrel from the National Hurricane Center as we go through the week.
04:51Thanks for joining us. I'm Mike Brennan.
