00:00Provision and Demand
00:04Persistently, Moses goes on finding excuses for not fulfilling his God-given role.
00:10He raises first his lack of persuasive authority, and then that he is without the gift of speech
00:15needed for the task. Finally he pleads to God, please send someone else. In response,
00:22the Lord goes on countering Moses' excuses. We must not overlook the marvel of divine patience.
00:30Where Moses feels impotent, the Lord imparts power. The serpent was part of Egypt's imperial crown,
00:37the Nile, its semi-divine river. God enables Moses to become master of both and deals with
00:43Moses' own impurities too. What are the tongue's inadequacies compared with the promised power of
00:49the tongue's creator? The I am is sufficient and will reveal himself so. But why after all
00:56that patience should the Lord then seek to kill Moses? We must note the following. The underlying
01:02issue was that Moses' son had not been circumcised, and as soon as Zipporah, Moses' wife, put this
01:08right, the crisis was over. Not only did Zipporah somehow realize this, but she also acted on behalf
01:16of the immobilized Moses. Touching Moses with the blood identified him with what she had done,
01:22and her words mean, instead of our marriage ending, the blood has made you my bridegroom
01:27all over again. It is without doubt. A strange and unexpected incident, but it carries a very
01:34important message. Those who go about the Lord's business must be meticulous in their obedience.
01:41Having settled in a foreign land, was Moses disinclined to go against surrounding social
01:46norms? Maybe circumcision didn't matter all that much? But it did. The messengers of the covenant
01:53of God must be the first to keep his covenant. Those who are the Lord's vessels must give
01:59priority to holiness. Read the requirements for being overseers in the church. They are very
02:06ordinary virtues, aren't they? Would not every Christian wish to be like that? Yes, and that
02:13is exactly the point. Those up front must be exhibiting what it is like to be a Christian.
02:19Reflection Think about verse 27.
02:23The Lord is present in every place. Every heart and mind is under his sway.
02:28He calls his agents, but remains in control.
