00:00Improving the teaching of history and raising the ranking of education in the Philippines and around the world
00:08are some of the orders of the President to the new Education Secretary.
00:12And Maris Umali is watching.
00:18According to the new Education Secretary, Senator Sonny Angara,
00:21he was called to Malacanang this morning to tell him that he was the one chosen to replace Vice President Sara Duterte.
00:29According to his marching orders from President Marcos,
00:32to raise the international standing of the Philippines in the Program for International Student Assessment or PISA,
00:38and also to improve the teaching of history to the students.
00:42It is mentioned about history,
00:43the ones that are not focused on memorization,
00:47but not on understanding what really happened,
00:52why it happened,
00:53and making history interesting for our young people.
01:00This is Angara's second term as Senator,
01:03so he cannot run for re-election in the upcoming election of 2025.
01:07Because Senator Angara is the new Secretary of DepEd this month,
01:12it is time for the reopening of the class.
01:14This is one of the first priorities he will give at the start of his term.
01:20In a GMA Integrated News interview,
01:22Angara said that he is already working on the field of Outgoing Education Secretary Duterte
01:27for a good turnover in the government.
01:29According to Angara, he will continue the initial review of the BISE for the streamlining of the curriculum.
01:35Senator Angara is one of the authors of the Enhanced Basic Education Act,
01:39or the K-12 program that is currently being reviewed by DepEd.
01:42We will continue whatever review was started.
01:45But there is a law, Marina,
01:46so at the end of the day,
01:49what will follow is the Congress.
01:59One of the controversies faced by Vice President Sara
02:02was her request for confidential funds for DepEd.
02:05Well, I think Vice President hasn't asked for confidential funds for the last two years.
02:10So, I don't think it will be necessary.
02:13One of the teachers' requests is to increase their salary and allowance
02:18for their 2025 elections.
02:21Of course, we support any pending measures
02:24like we supported the increase in the teaching allowance.
02:28We are one of the authors of that.
02:31So, anything that will help improve the compensation and the benefits of our teachers,
02:36we are 100% supportive.
02:38As for the request of private schools to increase their enrollment,
02:42I don't know.
02:44However, the department can help our schools, whether public or private.
02:48Because that is our mandate under the law,
02:52there is complementarity.
02:53We're constitutionally mandated to support the schools
02:58irrespective of whether they are public or private.
