The man who stole tennis star Nick Kyrgios’s car at gunpoint from his parent's home, has been sentenced to four and a half years jail. It's the second time the man's crimes have made headlines in 2005 when he was only 14, he killed a young woman during a police chase.

00:11only to be confronted by the gunman, which left her consumed by fear.

00:19In his victim impact statement, Nick Kyrgios backed that up.

00:26and hope he understands the pain, anxiety and trauma he has caused us.

00:34and then told Nil Kyrgios to show him how to drive it
00:38as he continued to point the gun at her.
00:40It was not simply brandished by the offender,
00:43it was pointed at her for a sustained period.
00:46As Nil Kyrgios escaped, the man fled,
00:49not realising Nick Kyrgios was able to control the speed of the car
00:53and tell police where it was using an app on his phone,
00:57which led to the man's arrest in a nearby suburb.
01:00The court heard he'd been in a drug-induced psychosis.
01:04He said he had irrational thoughts at the time,
01:07including that he could communicate with Elon Musk through the Tesla.
01:12But Acting Justice Rebecca Christensen cited his lengthy criminal record
01:17and the efforts made to help him.
01:20His history does not engender confidence in his ability
01:23to complete a rehabilitation order.
01:26The Kyrgios family was pleased the man was punished by being sent to jail.

01:37The man had wanted a drug and alcohol treatment order
01:40so he could seek help for his addictions in the community.
01:44But Acting Justice Rebecca Christensen said
01:47such an order is not a panacea and in any case the crime was too serious
01:52as she sentenced the man to jail.
01:54He'll be eligible for parole in 2026.
