00:01:40The Executive Commission on Women in the Draft
00:01:43is hereby called to order.
00:01:46Our first witness, Colonel Margaret Ann Jessop,
00:01:49U.S. Army Nurse Corps, retired,
00:01:51will make the opening remarks.
00:01:53Colonel Jessop.
00:01:54Thank you, Mr. Chairman.
00:01:58It has long been the contention of those
00:02:00who oppose women in the draft
00:02:02that should women be captured, they would break.
00:02:06Well, the fact is, women have been prisoners of war,
00:02:10and their experiences are a testimony
00:02:12to their strength, endurance, and courage.
00:02:17One hundred and four Army and Navy nurses
00:02:19stationed on the Philippines were incarcerated
00:02:22by the Japanese between 1942 and 1945.
00:02:26Yet their courage has been virtually invisible
00:02:29to the public,
00:02:31and has gone unrecognized by the military.
00:02:35In December of 1941, I was stationed at Camp Pershing
00:02:39on the island of Luzon in the Philippines.
00:02:42Located near the resort town of Rosario,
00:02:44the camp was used for what today is called R&R,
00:02:47or rest and relaxation.
00:02:50It was paradise.
00:02:53Go get him, Greg!
00:02:57Okay, let's get to the good part.
00:03:00Me first.
00:03:06Would you open the box already?
00:03:08The suspense is killing me.
00:03:09Don't rush me.
00:03:11This is my first wedding.
00:03:13My grandmother moved faster on her diamond jubilee.
00:03:18Oh, Gracie.
00:03:22It's so...
00:03:23Religious.
00:03:24Beautiful.
00:03:26I love it. Thank you.
00:03:28Here.
00:03:29I was going to apologize for not having it wrapped,
00:03:31but seeing how fast you open presents,
00:03:33I think we all made out.
00:03:37It's a Greek fertility god.
00:03:38It looks like a hat rack.
00:03:40Well, if worse comes to worse,
00:03:41you always can hang your jewelry on it.
00:03:43Bite your tongue.
00:03:44Bite your tongue.
00:03:45You know, I met this intern at Walter Reed once.
00:03:48He invited me up to his place to see this ancient Buddha.
00:03:51He said if you wanted something really bad,
00:03:53all you had to do was make a wish and rub it...
00:03:56Gracie!
00:03:58Zoey, what is wrong with you?
00:04:01Nothing, honey.
00:04:02Just a bunch of dirty minds.
00:04:07Oh, you're all so wonderful.
00:04:10I really wish I didn't have to resign to get married
00:04:12because I'm going to miss you all so much.
00:04:14I can't take this anymore.
00:04:16What are you doing?
00:04:17Just open the box already.
00:04:23It's lovely.
00:04:25It's black.
00:04:27I bet I'd look great in this.
00:04:28I had to find a white one, but I couldn't.
00:04:30Not long I thought you were a virgin.
00:04:32I am.
00:04:34Well, look at it this way.
00:04:36If there's a war, there are bound to be blackouts.
00:04:39And if there are blackouts, you'd be right in fashion.
00:04:42Okay, I'll leave it to you to see war as a fashion experience.
00:04:50Who is it?
00:04:52Maggie, open up. It's Helen.
00:04:56Oh, it's dirty.
00:04:58Helen, all right, I'm coming.
00:05:02I'm coming.
00:05:08Helen, do you realize what time it is?
00:05:10The Japs have bombed Pearl Harbor.
00:05:12The Japanese didn't stop at Pearl Harbor.
00:05:15Later that morning, they hit Clark Field in the Philippines
00:05:18where Helen's fiancé, Chris, and my Tom
00:05:20flew with the 17th Pursuit Squadron.
00:05:23MacArthur had grounded all our planes,
00:05:25so when the Japs came in,
00:05:27it was like shooting ducks in a penny arcade.
00:05:32I want to pressurize them.
00:05:34What are you doing out there?
00:05:41Keep it high, keep it high.
00:05:43Okay, take it from the left.
00:05:45Gently. Okay, good.
00:05:48Let's get Petria.
00:05:50Easy, easy, easy.
00:05:54Why doesn't he have a turntable?
00:06:06He's dead.
00:06:10Get under cover.
00:06:14Get under cover.
00:06:20Get down.
00:06:26Get down.
00:06:41What the hell are they bombing us for, the police?
00:06:43Where are you going? I've got to get out of here.
00:06:45It's raining, I've got to get out of here.
00:06:47But you lost your mind.
00:06:49Not you, too. You're all nuts.
00:06:57All right, let's get ready to move in.
00:06:59Grab that IV bottle for me there.
00:07:01All right, here we go.
00:07:03Need some more sterile bandages down there.
00:07:05See if you can find some.
00:07:07That's good.
00:07:10You guys here, are you okay?
00:07:12Yeah. I was just thinking about this guy I met today.
00:07:16Um, didn't catch his name.
00:07:18He was real handsome.
00:07:20Kind of like John Garfield, but with more muscles.
00:07:22That's just great.
00:07:24Here I am practically giving it away to find a hunk like that,
00:07:26and Miss Goody Two-Shoes over here
00:07:28walks away with the prize without so much as lifting a hemp.
00:07:31What happened?
00:07:33Somata Hari, what's your secret?
00:07:35How'd you meet this heartbreaker?
00:07:37He just showed up.
00:07:39Began helping me with the wounded.
00:07:41Then when the planes came in on their strafing run...
00:07:48I hit the ground.
00:07:50I wasn't really sure what was going on.
00:07:52I turned to ask him what we should do.
00:07:54Him being a soldier and all,
00:07:56I looked up to ask him what we should do.
00:08:00He didn't hit.
00:08:02Right below the eye.
00:08:04Side of his face was red.
00:08:06Side of his face was blown away.
00:08:08He wasn't...
00:08:10falling.
00:08:12He was just standing.
00:08:14Then he kind of half-turned and fell.
00:08:19Someone was screaming at me to stay down,
00:08:22but all I could do was look at him.
00:08:26Honey, I'm so sorry.
00:08:28I'm a nurse.
00:08:30I should have done something, but I couldn't.
00:08:32No, Grace, you did exactly what any one of us
00:08:34would have done under the same circumstances.
00:08:36You're being much too hard on yourself.
00:08:38I was scared to death.
00:08:40The way you ran out from under that truck, I never would have known.
00:08:42I had no choice.
00:08:44I'm claustrophobic.
00:08:48What would you have done if they assigned you to tunnel hospital in Corregidor?
00:08:51They did.
00:08:53No.
00:08:55I got out of it. I said I'd kill myself first.
00:08:57It's a wonder they didn't ship you home on a Section 8.
00:08:59Sent me here instead.
00:09:01Said the rest would do me good.
00:09:03Oh.
00:09:07One more week and we would have been married.
00:09:13Just one more week.
00:09:17What's important is that he loves you.
00:09:19I know that.
00:09:23I just can't help thinking that
00:09:25if we had been,
00:09:28I'd feel much better now.
00:09:31Believe me,
00:09:33it's just a piece of paper. It's not a painkiller.
00:09:36Yeah?
00:09:38What do you mean?
00:09:44Tom and I were married last summer.
00:09:46You were married?
00:09:48Oh, why didn't you tell me?
00:09:50I wanted to, but...
00:09:52I just... I didn't want you to have to lie for me.
00:09:54I can't believe it.
00:09:56I mean, I just assumed that
00:09:58you would be in for life.
00:10:00So did I till I met Tom.
00:10:02What about your career?
00:10:04I don't have to be in the military to be a nurse.
00:10:06No, of course not.
00:10:09So what are we gonna tell them?
00:10:11Well, we planned to tell them
00:10:13when Tom's tour was up.
00:10:16So you think they're all right?
00:10:18Sure. I think they're fine.
00:10:25For the next two weeks,
00:10:27the Japs hit us with everything they had.
00:10:29Morale plummeted.
00:10:31My girls never let it show.
00:10:33Then on the 22nd of December,
00:10:35they invaded the Lungayen Gulf.
00:10:37It was total chaos,
00:10:39men in trucks and cars on horseback
00:10:41and on foot racing south to Bataan.
00:10:49Miss Jessup?
00:10:51Miss Jessup?
00:10:53Yes.
00:10:55John Rader.
00:10:57Colonel Morton ordered me to evacuate you and your team immediately.
00:10:59To where? Bataan.
00:11:01Why Bataan? It's the only place we can defend.
00:11:03What about our patients?
00:11:05They're being shipped to a hospital in San Manuel.
00:11:07Why aren't we going there?
00:11:09Look, ma'am, you're the last of the nurses I've been ordered to get you out.
00:11:11Now, there's a Jap battalion a couple of miles from here,
00:11:13and I ain't even got enough guys to play them in baseball.
00:11:15Somebody has to stay with the wounded.
00:11:17You want to stay here and be taken prisoner?
00:11:19That's your business. Either way, I'm leaving in 15 minutes.
00:11:22Come on. Let's go, ladies. Let's go. Let's go.
00:11:24Be careful with that stuff, you guys.
00:11:26Oh! Oh!
00:11:28Come on, Jessup. Wake up.
00:11:32Ramos, we're pulling out.
00:11:34No! Hold it! I'm still messing with my girls!
00:11:36Whoo!
00:11:38That's a mortar, and it's not ours.
00:11:40Just a minute more.
00:11:42Look, we are never gonna catch that convoy as it is.
00:11:44Now, either we pull out now or start waving the white flags.
00:11:46And I'm not about to... 60 seconds is not gonna...
00:11:48That does it. Ramos!
00:11:50No! Then you're gonna have to leave without me.
00:11:52Here she comes!
00:11:56Sorry! Now!
00:11:58As soon as you're ready.
00:12:02What happened to you?
00:12:04I forgot something.
00:12:06What could have been so important?
00:12:08A woman after my own heart.
00:12:21Oh.
00:12:23Hey, slow down before you get us killed.
00:12:25Better dead than the Japs?
00:12:27The Japs are miles behind us.
00:12:29Then who are they?
00:12:31Look out! Look out! You're gonna hit them!
00:12:33Of course I'm gonna hit them!
00:12:47Now, that's just great.
00:12:50Everybody out.
00:12:52Grab those jerry cans.
00:12:54Ladies first.
00:13:15Aah!
00:13:17Aah!
00:13:19Aah!
00:13:45Did you get a load of them? You'd think they were on a picnic.
00:13:49Everybody out.
00:13:55Are there fish in here?
00:14:01Aah!
00:14:03Aah!
00:14:06Come on!
00:14:08Aah!
00:14:16Turn around.
00:14:19Turn around.
00:14:21That's not really necessary. Turn around!
00:14:23What the hell? All of you!
00:14:25Now!
00:14:27Now!
00:14:49All right, you can turn around now.
00:14:51What the hell's going on?
00:14:53I've been following Tojo over here for the last few hours.
00:14:56He's slowing down a little.
00:14:58And who are you?
00:15:00T.J. Nolan.
00:15:02I was a rigger with Ram Tech until the Japs blew it up.
00:15:08Had to have a swim, didn't he, Jessup?
00:15:19I knew something like this would happen.
00:15:21Well, come on, let's get out of here
00:15:23before his buddies come looking for him.
00:15:25You can join us if you like.
00:15:31Give him a hand, will you, Ramos?
00:15:33Yes, sir.
00:15:35Nolan!
00:15:37Since when did a tough outfit like Ram Tech
00:15:39start hiring boys to do a man's work?
00:15:42I'm not a boy.
00:15:51Yes, sir.
00:15:56We reached the Bataan Peninsula
00:15:58in Hospital No. 3 on New Year's Eve.
00:16:01There was nowhere left to run.
00:16:03Radar took off with Ramos for parts unknown,
00:16:06while Nolan figured she'd be safer with us.
00:16:09Lieutenant, there's an empty bed down at the end.
00:16:11All right, here we go.
00:16:13Just rest up, sir.
00:16:15You got a cigarette?
00:16:21We worked 20-hour days
00:16:23with half rations for the next two months.
00:16:26When we ran out of supplies, we improvised.
00:16:29Jungle vines for traction,
00:16:31banana leaves for beds,
00:16:33gasoline cans for stoves.
00:16:37Some of the girls came down with malaria,
00:16:39but somehow morale stayed high.
00:16:43Then in March, the bottom fell out.
00:16:47MacArthur had been ordered to Australia.
00:16:51The President of the United States
00:16:53ordered me to break through the Japanese lines
00:16:57and proceed from Corregidor to Australia
00:17:01for the purpose, as I understand it,
00:17:04of organizing the American offensive against Japan,
00:17:08a primary objective of which
00:17:11is the relief of the Philippines.
00:17:14I came through, and I shall return.
00:17:17You have been listening to an address
00:17:19by General Douglas MacArthur.
00:17:21We now return you...
00:17:23I knew it. He's gone to get reinforcements.
00:17:28I don't believe it.
00:17:29Well, believe it.
00:17:31The rats are leaving the ship,
00:17:33and the king rat just got off first.
00:17:35You're out of line, Nolan.
00:17:37I know General MacArthur.
00:17:38He would never have left if he wasn't ordered out.
00:17:40I bet he'll be back before we know it.
00:17:42Why don't you guys just face it?
00:17:43MacArthur has left us holding the bag.
00:17:45What us?
00:17:46You're not a nurse.
00:17:47You're not a soldier in the way you're acting.
00:17:49I don't even think you're an American.
00:17:51That's enough.
00:17:52It's all over but the shouting.
00:17:54I can't believe that.
00:17:55Haven't you heard the song that's going around?
00:17:57We're the battling bastards of Bataan.
00:18:00No mamas, no papas, no Uncle Sam.
00:18:02Don't you get it?
00:18:03Nobody's coming because nobody gives a damn!
00:18:05Nolan, we don't need you to spell it out for us.
00:18:08We're not blind.
00:18:09No, you're just deaf.
00:18:10We hear what we need to hear.
00:18:12Oh, and even if it means lying to yourselves, right?
00:18:14All we've got is hope.
00:18:15And what happens when that runs out?
00:18:18Then we've got each other.
00:18:21And if you can't understand that,
00:18:23then maybe it's better if you go it alone.
00:18:25Fine.
00:18:26I will.
00:18:27Let's go.
00:18:44Hey, you mind if I have a drag of that?
00:18:52I'm afraid you're going to have to do it for me.
00:18:58Thanks.
00:19:02Seems the only thing I can still work is my mouth.
00:19:07What's a nice-looking girl like you doing in a place like this?
00:19:10It's the only finishing school I could get into.
00:19:18Hey, did you get the word on that scuttlebutt
00:19:20about dugout Doug leaving the Rockies?
00:19:22Yeah, I did.
00:19:24Did you get the word on that scuttlebutt
00:19:26about dugout Doug leaving the Rock?
00:19:28Yeah, I just heard him on the radio.
00:19:30From Australia.
00:19:35Well, I guess that does it for me then, huh?
00:19:38I mean, with MacArthur gone,
00:19:40Japs are going to hit us with everything they got.
00:19:43Unless the ships come in.
00:19:49There aren't any ships.
00:19:52Screw them.
00:20:01Hey.
00:20:04I got a hot flash for you.
00:20:08The ships are coming.
00:20:10That's why MacArthur left.
00:20:12He went to organize a rescue.
00:20:14Don't lie to me.
00:20:18I'm not lying.
00:20:22He said,
00:20:25I shall return.
00:20:34So...
00:20:36He's coming back.
00:20:39You can count on it.
00:20:42I shall return.
00:20:49I shall return.
00:20:52I shall return.
00:21:02After MacArthur left, things calmed down for a while.
00:21:06Nightly bull sessions were filled with talks of food
00:21:09and rumors of rescue.
00:21:11For the first time since Pearl, we began to hope
00:21:14perhaps the ships would come after all.
00:21:17John.
00:21:22Maybe I won the Irish sweepstakes.
00:21:24Maybe you did and you have to take us all out
00:21:26for a night on the sand.
00:21:30That's bad.
00:21:32Say it.
00:21:35You've been drafted.
00:21:39Oh, God.
00:21:40Mac, I've been drafted.
00:21:42Congratulations.
00:21:46Tell them it's me.
00:21:47Well, what happened?
00:21:48Come on.
00:21:53Hey, Maggie.
00:22:01How did you manage to get in here?
00:22:03We're completely surrounded.
00:22:04Hux brought us in.
00:22:05Chris and I joined him after the planes were destroyed.
00:22:07I thought that the Hux hated Americans.
00:22:09Well, they do.
00:22:10Not as much as they hate the Japanese.
00:22:12Let me take a look at you.
00:22:14Well, the face is familiar,
00:22:16but where did you come up with this getup?
00:22:18What do you mean?
00:22:19I kind of like it.
00:22:20It hides a multitude of sins.
00:22:22What sins?
00:22:23You're all skin and bones, Maggie.
00:22:25You're not exactly chubby yourself.
00:22:28Come here, skinny.
00:22:38I was so afraid you'd be killed.
00:22:40Killed?
00:22:41I'd be killed.
00:22:42Maggie, I was born to die in bed in the desert.
00:22:45With you beside me.
00:22:47I'm going to hold you to that.
00:22:51Will you do that?
00:23:04Chris and Helen,
00:23:05since you wish to contract holy matrimony,
00:23:07please join your right hands
00:23:08and express your intention before God and His church.
00:23:11Helen, do you take Chris here present for your lawful marriage?
00:23:14Helen, do you take Chris here present
00:23:16for your lawful husband
00:23:17according to the right of our holy mother, the church?
00:23:19I do.
00:23:20And Chris, do you take Helen here present
00:23:22for your lawful wife
00:23:23according to the right of our holy mother, the church?
00:23:25I do.
00:23:26I now pronounce you man and wife.
00:23:28Yay!
00:23:30Yay!
00:23:45Smile.
00:23:58Oh, wait a minute.
00:23:59Stop!
00:24:00Yay!
00:24:01Yay!
00:24:02Yay!
00:24:03Yay!
00:24:04Yay!
00:24:06Woo!
00:24:08Good night, sweetheart.
00:24:11Tell me tomorrow.
00:24:14Good night, sweetheart.
00:24:29You okay?
00:24:30Sure, I'm fine.
00:24:32You're awful quiet.
00:24:34I'm worried, that's all.
00:24:35Well, don't worry.
00:24:38What do you know about surviving in the jungle?
00:24:40You're a pilot.
00:24:41What I don't know, the hucks will teach me.
00:24:43They scare me.
00:24:44Yeah, they scare me, too.
00:24:46But if I gotta be grounded,
00:24:47I'd rather be with them than any other outfit in this war.
00:24:49Besides, I'm a very fast learner.
00:24:51You should know that.
00:24:54I'd like you to have my...
00:24:56my West Point ring and my father's watch for safekeeping.
00:24:59No.
00:25:00I'd feel a lot better if you took them.
00:25:02It's like saying you're never gonna come back.
00:25:05Okay, I'll bring them back myself.
00:25:18Ina!
00:25:20Ina!
00:25:21Don't let me look.
00:25:33We gotta move it ourselves!
00:25:39Stay together. Let's keep moving.
00:25:41Keep moving!
00:25:55By April 8th, the Japs had broken through on all fronts.
00:25:59We were out of everything.
00:26:01Food, morphine, hope.
00:26:05Doctor, the artery in the leg is bleeding again.
00:26:07Plasma! Stats!
00:26:09There isn't any.
00:26:10What are you talking about? I'm up to my knees in blood.
00:26:12That was the last of it.
00:26:14Get in here.
00:26:15I'm not sterile.
00:26:16Get in here!
00:26:21Press on that bleeder so I can see what I'm doing.
00:26:23No, I'm not a nurse.
00:26:25I don't need a nurse. I need an extra finger.
00:26:27You got one of those, don't you?
00:26:42Now I know how the Dutch kid felt
00:26:44when he tried to hold back a knife with his finger.
00:26:46What a way to make a living.
00:26:48You'd make a wonderful nurse.
00:26:50You're a natural with an eighth-grade education.
00:26:53You'd go back to school. You're still young.
00:26:57Not anymore.
00:27:04Maggie!
00:27:06Maggie!
00:27:08Pack your gear and get the nurses.
00:27:10You're being evacuated to Corregidor.
00:27:12When?
00:27:13Immediately.
00:27:14What's happening? I just saw Helen.
00:27:16We'll be evacuated to Connell Hospital.
00:27:17Not me.
00:27:18What about you? What about our patients?
00:27:20There aren't enough boats.
00:27:22Then you better call the general and tell him we're not going.
00:27:24Look, I wasn't going to tell you this,
00:27:26but we're surrendering Bataan in the morning.
00:27:28Surrendering Bataan?
00:27:30You either leave now or you'll be taken prisoner.
00:27:33You're needed on Corregidor.
00:27:41Sorry.
00:27:47It's a curse.
00:27:55Come on. Pick him up.
00:27:57Pick him up, move him.
00:27:58The truck's over there.
00:27:59Can he walk?
00:28:01Can he walk? Move him.
00:28:03Jessica, can I talk to you for a second, please?
00:28:12I can't.
00:28:13Oh, you've got to.
00:28:15Look at me. I can't move.
00:28:18I can't feed myself.
00:28:20I can't even go to the latrine without help.
00:28:22What do you think them daps are going to do to me?
00:28:24Then we'll get you to Corregidor right away.
00:28:25No, why? It's going to fall.
00:28:27You know it.
00:28:29Please give me something I can fight with.
00:28:35I can't.
00:28:37Ask somebody else.
00:28:38I have.
00:28:39You're my last hope.
00:28:42I'm begging you.
00:28:44Let me die like a soldier.
00:28:52Come on.
00:28:54Right behind her.
00:28:56Hurry up.
00:28:58Come on. Get in the bus.
00:29:00Get in. Hurry up.

00:29:36Get that bus moving.
00:29:38The cowboy's not going to wait forever.
00:29:40Stop now. Don't let out movement.
00:29:42Go, go, go.
00:29:44Ramo?
00:29:46Maggie, come on. We got to go now.
00:29:48Miss Jessup?
00:29:50I forgot the doc.
00:29:52And Raider?
00:29:54He missed.
00:29:56Come on!
00:30:00Let's get him to the OR.
00:30:02We're going to miss the boat!
00:30:06Come on!
00:30:08Maggie, come on.
00:30:10We're going.
00:30:12We're not on the ground.
00:30:14Get moving, Nolan.
00:30:16Let's get out of here.
00:30:18Come back!
00:30:40Maggie, I need a little more traction right here.
00:30:45Oh, no.
00:30:47I can't see. I need some lights in here now.
00:30:49Lights!
00:30:56Thank you.
00:31:01Would you think I'd leave and miss all the fun?
00:31:08Bye-bye!
00:31:10Bye-bye!
00:31:13Bye-bye!
00:31:15The tan had fallen.
00:31:17After three months under constant and grueling enemy fire,
00:31:21we had finally surrendered.
00:31:23Our boys had stood their ground,
00:31:25throwing themselves at the enemy
00:31:27when they had run out of ammunition.
00:31:30Now it was over.
00:31:43Yeah!
00:31:45Yeah!
00:32:11Okay.
00:32:13It's all right. We surrender.

00:35:01All right? Make more depressed.
00:35:06All right? Don't move.
00:35:14We never made it to Manila
00:35:16where all our fellow nurses would be interned.
00:35:19Instead, we ended up
00:35:21on one of the many death marches
00:35:23that would take place throughout the war,
00:35:26six days to the rail station at San Miguel,
00:35:29a track that would be measured in lives,
00:35:32not miles.
00:35:36Come on.

00:41:06You have to.

00:43:20Through the night with the light from above
00:43:24From the mountains, through the prairies
00:43:28To the oceans, wide with foam
00:43:32God bless America
00:43:36The land that I love
00:43:50The land that I love

00:45:52I'll kill him.
00:45:53Get her back.
00:45:54HSnow though
00:45:55Hey,
00:45:56Wait a minute, go!!
00:45:57She doesn't know what she's doing.
00:45:58Now, take care of her.
00:45:59I promise.
00:46:00Hey!
00:46:01Stop!
00:46:02Hmmm.
00:46:03No!
00:46:04Ho!
00:46:05Why don't you talk?
00:46:06Stop it!
00:46:07What are you doing?
00:46:09You idiot!
00:46:10Take your friend back to the ranks.
00:46:15I am Captain Nakayama, your camp commander.
00:46:29Our rules are simple.
00:46:32We'll salute and bow to all Japanese military personnel, regardless of rank.
00:46:36We'll obey all orders without hesitation.
00:46:40Any resistance, we met by force.
00:46:44The punishment for escape is death.
00:46:49The bulk of the food you grow here will feed the Imperial Japanese forces in the Philippines.
00:46:56Any excess over your quota will be yours.
00:46:59If nothing remains, you will starve.
00:47:04In the Japanese army, to be taken prisoner while still able to resist is considered a criminal act.
00:47:12Suicide, rather than surrender, is preferred.
00:47:18Reflect upon this, and consider your situation.
00:47:25Everyone, go!
00:47:42Please, these bunks are open.
00:47:52Please take your choice.
00:48:08Gone off, has she?
00:48:09Afraid so.
00:48:10Don't be.
00:48:11It's a blessing.
00:48:13The Japanese are a superstitious lot.
00:48:15Possession and insanity to them are one and the same.
00:48:17She'll have nothing to fear from them.
00:48:19But won't they just kill her?
00:48:21Gracious no.
00:48:22They'd be terrified that her devil spirit would possess them.
00:48:27I'm Judith Easton.
00:48:29My husband, Lord Cecil Easton, was the former director of the Batangas Agricultural Station.
00:48:34Maggie Jessop, this is Helen Wyatt.
00:48:36Pleasure.
00:48:37Lord Easton?
00:48:38That makes you a lady, doesn't it?
00:48:40In Batangas, my dear, we're all ladies.
00:48:44I'm Nolan.
00:48:46And that's Catherine Grace.
00:48:47We call her Gracie.
00:48:48I don't suppose any of you were able to pick up some food along the way?
00:48:52We passed a horned herder, but they wouldn't let us stop.
00:48:54We were lucky to get by some water.
00:48:55I notice that there aren't any children here.
00:48:56Were they taken away from here?
00:48:59No.
00:49:00All the women with children were taken to the Santo Tomas University in Manila.
00:49:03Are we the only army nurses here?
00:49:05The only nurses and the only female military personnel.
00:49:08I'm Molly Carstairs.
00:49:10My husband, John, and I owned a sugar plantation near here.
00:49:12You don't have any other medical staff?
00:49:14There is a civilian doctor, Charles Morgan, in the main compound.
00:49:18He comes whenever he can, but it's not enough.
00:49:21Between the beriberi, dengue fever, dysentery, and malaria, we're losing at least one of us per day.
00:49:26Where's the hospital?
00:49:27In the men's compound.
00:49:28They have an area they like to call a hospital, but it's really just a place to die.
00:49:40Hurry up!
00:49:44Hurry up!
00:49:46Hurry up!
00:49:51Why does the camp commander speak with an American accent?
00:49:54He's a countryman of yours.
00:49:56He's an American?
00:49:58Born in San Francisco, I believe.
00:50:00You're kidding.
00:50:01He was studying in Japan when he was inducted into the military service.
00:50:04I don't think he had a choice.
00:50:06How come you know so much about this guy?
00:50:09I know that I'm an enemy.
00:50:11At least he's an American.
00:50:13I shouldn't expect too much from that.
00:50:15He is, as you say, between a rock and the hard place.
00:50:19His men won't trust him because he's American, and we can't trust him because he's Japanese.
00:50:24It's not him I'd be worried about if I were you.
00:50:26It's Kodama.
00:50:27Who?
00:50:28That terrible little man who was going to kill your friend.
00:50:32You made him lose face in front of his commanding officer.
00:50:36He'll never forgive you for that.
00:50:38Good night.
00:50:45Ohayo.
00:50:46Cincinnati.
00:50:47Hmm?
00:50:49Ohayo.
00:50:50Cincinnati.
00:50:51I'm from Cincinnati.
00:50:52Sing?
00:50:56Wakaran.
00:50:59What's so funny?
00:51:01Ohayo in Japanese means good morning.
00:51:08Good night, sweetheart.
00:51:11Till we meet tomorrow.
00:51:16I can't believe it.
00:51:17Good night, sweetheart?
00:51:18I'd like to give them all a good night permanently.
00:51:21Don't let it bother you, my dear.
00:51:23It's just their way of lowering our morale.
00:51:26How much lower do they think we can go?
00:51:28A thousand times lower.
00:51:30That's how many records they found when they took over the camp.
00:51:34Oh, that's just great.
00:51:37I didn't pay much attention to the hit parade before I got in this dung hole.
00:51:40And now I'm going to become an expert.
00:51:44Thanks.
00:51:46Night.
00:51:47Good night, my dear.
00:51:55Maggie?
00:51:56Mm-hmm.
00:51:57You asleep yet?
00:51:59No, I'm still awake.
00:52:03You and Tom ever think about having kids?
00:52:07That's why we got married.
00:52:09Chris and I wanted kids.
00:52:12We talked about it all the time.
00:52:14You're still young. There'll be somebody else.
00:52:16No, there won't.
00:52:19There'll never be anyone else.
00:52:22Don't think like that.
00:52:25Really, it's just going to make things much worse.
00:52:27Try to get some sleep, okay?
00:52:29Yeah.
00:52:31Night.
00:52:37Maggie?
00:52:46I'm pregnant.
00:52:56And I don't know, God help me, I don't know if it's Chris's.
00:53:00And I don't know, God help me, I don't know if it's Chris's.
00:53:30Look at the way they're hauling stuff in those blankets.
00:53:32Look at the way they're hauling stuff in those blankets.
00:53:34What a great way out of here.
00:53:36Only if you're dead, my dear.
00:53:38That's the morning burial detail.
00:53:50How can you be so sure?
00:53:52I'm as regular as a clockworker.
00:53:54But you know that stress sometimes...
00:53:57You're clear!
00:54:03Day!
00:54:07Beginning today, all work parties will be divided into groups of ten.
00:54:12The color armbands you've been given will help us expedite executions
00:54:16in the event of escapes.
00:54:18The mathematics are simple.
00:54:20If one prisoner in a work party escapes,
00:54:23the remaining nine will be shot.
00:54:27If all ten escape, a hundred will be executed.
00:54:54I got an idea.
00:54:56Let's take some of this corn back to camp and start our own garden.
00:55:00How?
00:55:09Good idea.
00:55:26Three!
00:55:27Four!
00:55:28Five!
00:55:29Six!
00:55:30Stop!
00:55:31Seven!
00:55:32Eight!
00:55:34Nine!
00:55:35Ten!
00:55:37One!
00:55:38Stop!
00:55:39Two!
00:55:40Stop!
00:55:41Wait!
00:55:50There's no one here!
00:55:52There's no one here!
00:55:53There's no one here!
00:55:55There's no one here!
00:55:58There's no one here!
00:55:59There's no one here!
00:56:00There's no one here!
00:56:01There's no one here!
00:56:17What does he want us to do, sweat flies?
00:56:25You pig.
00:56:27He wants us to hit each other.
00:56:36Hit me!
00:56:38Do it!
00:56:40Give me the satisfaction.
00:56:42Do it or he'll kill us both!
00:56:48Harder!
00:56:51Harder!
00:56:54Come on.
00:57:24Come on.
00:57:45I'm Dr. Morgan.
00:57:46Maggie Jessup.
00:57:48There's a man in the men's compound.
00:57:50He says he's your husband.
00:57:51Tom Patterson?
00:57:52That's right.
00:57:53Is he all right?
00:57:54I'm afraid not.
00:57:55He's in the zero ward.
00:57:57What's that?
00:57:58Zero chances of survival.
00:58:05I'm going.
00:58:06Get out of my way.
00:58:07No!
00:58:08Go with me!
00:58:09You're hurting me!
00:58:10Nobody's trying to hurt you.
00:58:11We're trying to keep you from getting killed.
00:58:12Easy.
00:58:13All right, let me ask you all just one question.
00:58:16If someone you loved were over there, what would you do?
00:58:19If you could have been with Chris before he died,
00:58:21would you let anyone or anything stop you?
00:58:23Would you?
00:58:27Are you crazy?
00:58:28She'll get us all killed.
00:58:30You heard what Nakayama said about escaping.
00:58:32I'm not escaping.
00:58:33Let her go.
00:58:34No.
00:58:35Look, you can't hold on to me forever.
00:58:38You're all insane!
00:58:40Well, if you won't listen to me.
00:58:42Hey, hey, hey, back off!
00:58:43Because Maggie's going.
00:58:45And if you run to the chaps, you're gonna deal with me.
00:58:47And me as well.
00:58:52Thank you.
00:58:54I love you.
00:58:57Give him my love.
00:59:01I'm gonna go with you.
00:59:02No, someone's gotta distract the guards.
00:59:22Who's there?
00:59:23It's me.
00:59:27Hi.
00:59:31Do you have a light?
00:59:32Yes, yes, yes.
00:59:34Do you want to go over there and smoke?
00:59:36Yes.
00:59:51Okay.
01:00:21Come on.
01:00:22Maggie.
01:00:50Maggie.
01:00:53Is it really you?
01:00:55Were you expecting someone else?
01:00:59How did you get in here?
01:01:00That's not important.
01:01:02What's important is that we're together.
01:01:09Are you in pain?
01:01:10No, no.
01:01:13I was hoping you got out.
01:01:16Don't worry about me, I'm fine.
01:01:23I want you to do something for me.
01:01:26Name it.
01:01:29When you get back home...
01:01:30When we get back home.
01:01:34When you get back home,
01:01:38I want you to find somebody else.
01:01:42I don't want you to give up.
01:01:44Who's talking about giving up?
01:01:45What about that promise that you made to me?
01:01:48That we were gonna die together in bed after we made love?
01:01:52Okay, okay.
01:01:54I'm feeling stronger already.
01:01:57That's better.
01:02:02I love you, Maggie.
01:02:05I love you, too.
01:02:18You kiss so good.
01:02:22I love you, too.
01:02:52I love you, too.
01:03:23Oh, this is worrying me.
01:03:29Kill us.
01:03:35No.
01:03:44Oh, dear God.
01:03:52Kill us.
01:04:07Kill us.
01:04:08Don't.
01:04:11Don't.
01:04:16Kill us.
01:04:19Kill us.
01:04:22Kill us.
01:04:37Once again, Nakayama had saved my life.
01:04:40However, this time I wasn't sure he had done me a favor.
01:04:44Tom was dead,
01:04:45and now more than ever,
01:04:46Kadama was my sworn enemy.
01:04:52I love you.
01:05:22I love you.
01:05:31It was a very foolish thing you did,
01:05:33risking your life to be with your husband.
01:05:35Kadama could have shot you on the spot.
01:05:37It's just as foolish as risking your life for an emperor.
01:05:40Emperor Hirohito is a living god.
01:05:43My husband wasn't such a bad guy, either.
01:05:46Your lack of respect and sentimentality is typically American.
01:05:50You should know.
01:05:51Japanese, what we do is out of duty,
01:05:54not emotion.
01:05:55A lesson you'd do well to learn.
01:05:58I'm putting you in charge of the woman's compound.
01:06:04I don't understand.
01:06:05As of today, as ranking female officer,
01:06:08I'm putting you in charge of the female prisoners.
01:06:11You'll help me bring in the crops.
01:06:13I'm a nurse, not a farmer.
01:06:14Nevertheless, you're in charge.
01:06:16Then why don't you put me in charge of something I can do?
01:06:18Give me a hospital.
01:06:20I don't have a hospital.
01:06:21A place to die.
01:06:22Enough of this.
01:06:23I'm putting you in charge of that spinal.
01:06:25Disobeying, all your people will suffer.
01:06:27Take him away.
01:06:28Yes, sir.
01:06:39What are you doing?
01:06:42You do it.
01:06:46What is she trying to do, get herself killed?
01:06:50What do you think you're doing?
01:06:51You're here to work.
01:06:52Now do it.
01:06:54Here.
01:06:56What if it's Christmas?
01:06:57What if it isn't?
01:07:00You lost him once.
01:07:02Are you willing to lose him again?
01:07:04Come on.
01:07:20Maggie.
01:07:22Come here.
01:07:25Look.
01:07:32Where'd it come from?
01:07:33The Hucks.
01:07:34They run the resistance operation in this area
01:07:36and from time to time leave us things in the fields.
01:07:38Food, medicine, news of the war.
01:07:40They're a fierce lot.
01:07:42The Japanese are frightened...
01:07:43Excuse me.
01:07:44I, too, am a big fan of National Geographic.
01:07:47And I'm sure that the Hucks are a real interesting bunch of primitives.
01:07:50But could we just open the package now?
01:07:53Oh, my God.
01:08:01Food we need.
01:08:02Food we need.
01:08:03Medicine.
01:08:07I've invaded Guadalcanal.
01:08:09Yay!
01:08:24Stop it!
01:08:40What's happening?
01:08:41Your men are out there killing people.
01:08:54That's right.
01:09:07How can you allow this?
01:09:15Do you know what this is?
01:09:18This is the sword of the samurai.
01:09:21One who lives by the code of Bushido.
01:09:25One who'd rather die than live in shame.
01:09:31It's been in my family for 400 years.
01:09:37My father and mother lived by that code.
01:09:41And now, because of your president,
01:09:44they've died by it.
01:09:50I don't understand.
01:09:52All Japanese Americans have been placed in concentration camps.
01:09:56Not because of crimes against their flag,
01:09:59but because of the color of their skin.
01:10:02My father and mother chose not to endure that shame.
01:10:06I'm truly sorry about what happened to your parents.
01:10:10But killing us won't bring them back.
01:10:13And your parents chose to take their own lives.
01:10:16Here, we have no choice.
01:10:17There's always a choice.
01:10:18Not for us.
01:10:19Either your men kill us or you leave us to rot in that excuse you call a hospital.
01:10:22And you know that suicide's not an option for us.
01:10:24You know our values.
01:10:25They're yours.
01:10:26I'm Japanese!
01:10:29You shouldn't be ruled by your emotions.
01:10:34Please.
01:10:36Stop the killing.
01:10:41Take him away.
01:10:48No!
01:11:04Here we go.
01:11:10Yoi!
01:11:15Hajime!
01:11:18Hajime!
01:11:37Baka.
01:11:48Yosh!
01:12:13This is your baby son.
01:12:18Hi.
01:12:40Maggie.
01:12:43Maggie.
01:12:49Baby.
01:12:51Time.
01:12:53Yeah.
01:12:54Don't panic.
01:12:55Okay.
01:13:17Easy, easy, easy.
01:13:19Okay.
01:13:20You got it.
01:13:22Up.
01:13:25Good.
01:13:26Good, Helen.
01:13:27That's right.
01:13:28Just a little bit more now.
01:13:29Good.
01:13:30Push.
01:13:31Hard.
01:13:32Come on.
01:13:33That's right.
01:13:34Good.
01:13:35Push.
01:13:36Good, good, good, good.
01:13:37Keep your head down.
01:13:38Push.
01:13:39Come on, Helen.
01:13:40Push.
01:13:41Maggie, I can't.
01:13:42Yes, you can.
01:13:43Yes, you can.
01:13:44It's almost there.
01:13:45Come on.
01:13:46I can see the head.
01:13:47One more.
01:13:48Take a deep breath, Helen.
01:13:49Push.
01:13:50Bear down.
01:13:51That's it.
01:13:52That's it.
01:13:53That's it.
01:13:54Oh.
01:13:55Oh.
01:13:56Oh.
01:13:57Oh.
01:14:02What is it?
01:14:04A girl.
01:14:06Oh.
01:14:22I understand that one of your nurses
01:14:23has given birth to a baby.
01:14:25Yes.
01:14:26Last night.
01:14:27A little girl.
01:14:28And his father?
01:14:29He was a captain in the Army Air Corps.
01:14:30He died in Bataan.
01:14:32As soon as you can get them ready,
01:14:33I'll have Kodama take them to the civilian camp
01:14:35at Santo Tomas.
01:14:37That may not be for a few months.
01:14:39That's impossible.
01:14:40It was a very difficult birth.
01:14:41This is no place for a baby.
01:14:43Or an adult, for that matter.
01:14:44But if you move the mother and the child now,
01:14:45they'll both die.
01:14:46They're suffering from malnutrition.
01:14:49I'll give you a month.
01:14:51Kodama could take them to Manila.
01:14:55We'll never get to Manila alive.
01:14:57Kodama will walk us to death just for spite.
01:14:59We've got a month.
01:15:01We'll get you out of here.
01:15:02How?
01:15:03The gorillas.
01:15:04I'll leave them a note.
01:15:05Oh, well, we found the radio.
01:15:06I'll get it for you.
01:15:37Do they help?
01:15:38Yeah.
01:15:39So when do we go?
01:15:41April 9, the first anniversary of the fall of Bataan.
01:16:01I love you.
01:16:06Baby.
01:16:07Baby.
01:16:08OK?
01:16:09Hey.
01:16:10OK?
01:16:11Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
01:16:12Ah.
01:16:13Ah.
01:16:14Ah.
01:16:15Ah.
01:16:17Ah.
01:16:18Ah.
01:16:19Ah.
01:16:20Ah.
01:16:21Ah.
01:16:22Ah.
01:16:23Ah.
01:16:24Ah.
01:16:25Ah.
01:16:26Ah.
01:16:27Ah.
01:16:28Ah.
01:16:29Ah.
01:16:30Ah.
01:16:31Ah.
01:16:32Ah.
01:16:33Ah.
01:16:34Ah.
01:16:35Ah.
01:16:36Ah.
01:16:37Ah.
01:16:38Ah.
01:16:39Ah.
01:16:40Ah.
01:16:41Ah.
01:16:42Ah.
01:16:43Ah.
01:16:44Ah.
01:16:45Ah.
01:16:46Ah.
01:16:47Ah.
01:16:48Ah.
01:16:49Ah.
01:16:50Ah.
01:16:51Ah.
01:16:52Ah.
01:16:53Ah.
01:16:54Ah.
01:16:55Ah.
01:16:56Ah.
01:16:57Ah.
01:16:58Ah.
01:16:59Ah.
01:17:00Ah.
01:17:01Ah.
01:17:02Ah.
01:17:03Ah.
01:17:04Ah.
01:17:05Ah.
01:17:06Ah.
01:17:07Ah.
01:17:08Ah.
01:17:09Ah.
01:17:10Ah.
01:17:11Ah.
01:17:12Ah.
01:17:13Ah.
01:17:14I ask that you grant me permission to punish them.
01:17:20Yes, sir.
01:17:23I ask that you grant me permission to punish them.
01:17:25They have committed the crime of running away.
01:17:28I ask that you grant me permission to punish them.
01:17:36Stop!
01:17:39Stop!
01:17:40Go on, Gracie.
01:18:10Let me go!
01:18:17Shoot.
01:18:19Only Americans shoot.
01:18:22I'm an American, too.
01:18:24Shoot!
01:18:25Shoot!
01:18:28Bastard!
01:18:30You won't forgive me, will you?
01:18:34Take him away.
01:18:35Yes, sir.
01:18:41Yes, sir.
01:18:42Take him away.
01:18:43Yes, sir.
01:18:44Hurry up.
01:18:45Yes, sir.
01:18:52Stop!
01:18:53Let me go!
01:18:55You will pay for this.
01:19:11No.
01:19:24You sent for me?
01:19:28I've ordered the warehouse cleared.
01:19:31Do whatever you like with it.
01:19:37Thank you.
01:19:40Thank you.
01:19:49We finally got our hospital.
01:19:52A week later, we received word that Helen and the baby had made it.
01:20:05During the next year of captivity, life in Batangas became almost tolerable.
01:20:10Two months after Nakayama let us set up a hospital,
01:20:13we celebrated our first 24 hours without a death.
01:20:18Taking charge of the PA speakers came next.
01:20:21At first, I was against doing Nakayama's dirty work,
01:20:24but Nolan convinced me otherwise.
01:20:27Using records, we were able to pass on more news to the camp.
01:20:31They'll always be in England meant that the British were still hanging on.
01:20:35Walsy Matilda meant that the Australians were working with us and so on.
01:21:06Back!
01:21:08Back!
01:21:11Back!
01:21:14In March of 1944, Gail Poulsen arrived from Mindanao,
01:21:17where she had been taken prisoner after escaping from Corregidor.
01:21:21Haggard and drawn, she'd finally run out of lipstick.
01:21:25Following a poor spring harvest, the camp was put on half rations.
01:21:30Starvation ran rampant as deaths from dry, buried berry reached epidemic proportions.
01:21:37With no medical supplies of any consequence,
01:21:39animal protein became our only chance for survival.
01:21:44Once again, Nakayama came to the rescue.
01:21:48You getting anything on the radio?
01:21:50No.
01:21:52I reckon he might be blackmailing us.
01:21:55Are you getting anything on the radio?
01:22:18I'm worried about Gail.
01:22:19If she doesn't eat soon, she won't make it.
01:22:23Princess Gail won't eat, huh?
01:22:29Well, maybe you'd rather we sent out to a restaurant for some chicken soup.
01:22:32Or better yet, a drugstore for some lipstick.
01:22:36We wouldn't want our fashion plate looking too pale when we bury her.
01:22:39Just let me die in peace.
01:22:40Well, why didn't you say so?
01:22:41What the hell do you think you're doing?
01:22:46We cannot let a good pair of shoes go to waste, Gail.
01:22:48Are you nuts?
01:22:49No, I'm alive.
01:22:50Well, so am I.
01:22:51We're going to need this.
01:23:08Don't you think you were just a little hard on her?
01:23:11Got her to eat, didn't I?
01:23:13The Allies have invaded Normandy.
01:23:14The Allies have invaded Normandy!
01:23:15To start the morning off, an oldie but a goodie.
01:23:16That old World War I classic, Over There.
01:23:29Over There, send the word, send the word, Over There.
01:23:59Over There.
01:24:00Right there.
01:24:01Can you see?
01:24:02I can see.
01:24:03Hold on.
01:24:04I can't.
01:24:05Can you make it?
01:24:06They're ours!
01:24:07They're ours!
01:24:38And now, for all you battling bastards of Bataan, on this bright October morning, an
01:24:57old favorite of yours and mine, I'm waiting for ships that never come in.
01:25:03Better late than never.
01:25:04Where's the radio?
01:25:05Where's the radio?
01:25:06All I have is records.
01:25:07Where's the radio?
01:25:08Come on!

01:25:10Come on!
01:25:11Come on!

01:25:42Get her!
01:25:43Get her to the bed over there.
01:25:44Careful.
01:25:45Careful.
01:25:46Easy, easy.
01:25:47Don't you go on without me!

01:26:00Don't you go on without me!
01:26:01Don't you go on without me!
01:26:02Don't you go on without me!
01:26:03Don't you go on without me!
01:26:04Don't you go on without me!
01:26:05Don't you go on without me!
01:26:07Don't you go on without me!
01:26:13I know about the records.
01:26:15What do records have to do with anything?
01:26:17Where's the radio?
01:26:18The radio.
01:26:26What radio?
01:26:34Whose is it?
01:26:35I don't know.
01:26:36Who's is it?
01:26:37I don't know.
01:26:39Once more, who does this radio belong to?
01:26:43It's mine.
01:26:50Well, the truth now, she dies.
01:26:55It's mine.
01:26:56The radio's mine.
01:26:57I brought it with me from Indanel.
01:27:00Take him away!
01:27:01Yes, sir!
01:27:05All right, line up here!
01:27:07Line up!

01:27:23Hey, hey!
01:27:29Come on.
01:27:51The radio was not hers.
01:27:53We got it from the gorillas long before she even arrived at the camp.
01:27:56Please, take her down.
01:27:58Any day now, everything's gonna be over.
01:28:02What will you gain by taking her life?
01:28:18Did anyone ever tell you you look great without makeup?
01:28:21No.
01:28:24You're a real beauty inside and out.
01:28:29Shh, listen.
01:28:31It's just planes, it's just planes.
01:28:34No, no, it...
01:28:35It sounds like tanks.
01:28:48Attention.
01:28:49You are completely surrounded.
01:28:51Either you come out unarmed and surrender immediately,
01:28:55or we're coming in.
01:28:59You've got ten minutes.
01:29:13No, please, don't hurt him. I'll take care of him.
01:29:15I'll take care of him.
01:29:18You're not insane.
01:29:21See anything, Kai?
01:29:22Not here, Sergeant.
01:29:23Look over there.
01:29:24Look at that.
01:29:25Watch that tree line.
01:29:27Down.
01:29:33What the hell?
01:29:39Hold up.
01:29:51Lieutenant Margaret Jessup.
01:29:53U.S. Army Nurse Corps.
01:29:55What are you doing here?
01:29:57All you women were supposed to be liberated at Santa Tomas.
01:30:01Not all of us.
01:30:09If you don't allow the Japanese to leave with their weapons
01:30:12and give them a four-hour head start,
01:30:14I'm going to have to take you to the hospital.
01:30:17If you don't allow the Japanese to leave with their weapons
01:30:19and give them a four-hour head start,
01:30:22they'll kill over a hundred hostages.
01:30:24Are you nuts?
01:30:26The general would have my hide if I did that.
01:30:28Well, he's going to have over a hundred corpses if you don't.
01:30:48I would like you to have this.
01:30:52I can't.
01:30:54Please.
01:30:55I can't.
01:30:56It's been in your family for hundreds of years.
01:30:58It should be for your sons.
01:31:00There won't be any.
01:31:02If you don't take it,
01:31:04it'll hang on the wall of a stranger's house
01:31:06who'll lie about how he won it in battle.
01:31:08A samurai sword belongs with a samurai.
01:31:12But I'm a woman.
01:31:14And a samurai like my mother.
01:31:17Please.
01:31:21What would your father have thought?
01:31:24He would be honored.
01:31:26Thank you.
01:31:47That was the last time I saw Nakayama.
01:31:50A few days later,
01:31:52we heard that he had died the way he wanted.
01:31:55Like a samurai.
01:32:26After two years,
01:32:28ten months,
01:32:30and 24 days,
01:32:32we were finally free.
01:32:36Of the 104 Army and Navy nurses
01:32:39incarcerated by the Japanese during the war,
01:32:42not one failed to survive the ordeal.
01:32:46For that, we were awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry.
01:32:50The Bronze Star without the V for valor.
01:32:58I would like to ask the committee.
01:33:04Were we not valorous?
01:33:09Were those who risked everything
01:33:12to preserve life any less courageous
01:33:14than those that carried a weapon?
01:33:17How does one measure courage?
01:33:21I can only speak from my own experience.
01:33:26You measure against yourself.
01:33:33And that can only be done once you strip away civilization.
01:33:38Plain courage is a shining thing when you see it.
01:33:44A glowing reflection of the spirit of those women
01:33:49with whom I served.
01:34:07Thank you.
