00:00Jack Perry is the new TNT Champion, Mercedes Monet is the New Japan Strong Champion, and
00:05the crowd didn't like it, and Will Ospreay and Swerve Strickland had a banger. What a
00:10shocker. I'm Pete Quinnell, and this is my review of AEW and New Japan's Forbidden
00:13Door 2024.
00:14There were 5 matches on the zero hour pre-show, and my sum total of it is…it would make
00:22for a pretty great episode of Rampage. Kyle Fletcher beat Serpentico in a matter of minutes
00:26with a Brain Buster on the Turnbuckle, The House of Black defeated Private Party, Kyle
00:29O'Reilly and Tomohiro Ishii in Gabe Kidd and Roderick Strong which featured some great
00:33Brodie King and Ishii moments and ended with Brodie King winning decisively, Will O'Nightingale
00:37and Tam Nakano beat Chris Statlander and Momo Watanabe, with Nakano hitting the Hammerlock
00:41German Suplex for the win, Mariah May rolled up Soraya to advance in the Women's Owen
00:45Hart Tournament in a fun little match, and the main event of Zero Hour was an incredibly
00:49fun 6 man tag match of Titan, Haramu Takahashi and Yota Tsuji vs. Mystico and the Lucha Brothers.
00:54Titan stole the show for me, having some insanely good lucha spots mirroring Rey Fenix,
00:59but it was Mystico who picked up the win with La Mystica on Titan in the end, a fun, if
01:04largely inconsequential Zero Hour.
01:06The main card kicked off with Echicero taking on MJF in his hometown of Long Island, and
01:10this was my first time watching Echicero, and he was awesome. He did great work playing
01:13off the crowd, and his unique roll throughs into submissions and holds was really fun
01:17to watch.
01:18Unfortunately, the match seemed fairly superficial to me, MJF playing the hits for the crowd,
01:23only one with the Panama Sunrise and a Brain Buster with the bout never really reaching
01:27a higher gear.
01:28Which is fine, not every match needs to be a 5 star classic that goes for 30 minutes,
01:32but I would have potentially expected a little more from the opening match to start the night
01:35off hot. Still a good match, just felt like it was lacking that little something to take
01:39it to the next level.
01:40After a propaganda video package putting over how the Young Bucks essentially created the
01:43Forbidden Door, we had the Elite of Matthew and Nicholas Jackson and Kazuchika Okada vs
01:47Scissor Ace of The Acclaimed and Hiroshi Tanahashi.
01:51Now, this might sound very silly, but going into the show I was looking forward to this
01:55match well enough, I thought it was a nice way to get Tanahashi on the card, cos you
01:58have to, it's Forbidden Door, but I thought it would be a nice superficial little six
02:02man tag.
02:03But silly old me forgot that opposing Tanahashi was freaking Kazuchika Okada, which meant
02:08this match had so much history to elevate it that much more.
02:11And the match was built around those two, purposefully being kept apart the whole match
02:14until the end, which was a perfect way to book it.
02:17Anthony Bowen saying Scissor Me Daddy Ace is actually quite funny, and Nicholas Jackson
02:21stealing Max Caster's headphones and yelling over the crowd's chant I Can't Hear You
02:25You Dumbasses also got a laugh out of me.
02:27At the end of the match, Tanahashi cleared house and looked like he might have enough
02:30to come back into it himself after The Acclaimed were laid out, but Okada nailed him with one
02:34Rainmaker and that was all it took to seal the deal.
02:37The next match on the card was…
02:39Dude, do you mind?
02:40I'm trying to record my review.
02:42It's fine.
02:44No, no, I'm recording.
02:47Right now.
02:48The camera's right there.
02:49Dude, why you gotta be such a control freak?

02:56description below.
02:57Up next was the Men's Owen Hart Tournament first round match of Bryan Danielson vs Shingo
03:02Takagi, and while the previous match was built around two competitors' history together
03:05and their eternal feud, this match was built around one thing.
03:09Danielson's neck is big hurty, coming out with suction cup marks on his shoulders and
03:13enough tape to hold up a bridge, Danielson's weak spot was simply displayed and Takagi
03:17took one look at it and said, ha ha ha, yes.
03:20Takagi hit a brutal looking swinging neckbreaker off the apron which incapacitated Danielson
03:25for a while, and throughout the whole match it kept coming back to his neck over and over
03:29again.
03:30It's not complicated storytelling, but I'll be damned if it isn't compelling.
03:33Takagi hit a Pumping Bomber and Made in Japan, but Danielson kicked out, and as he was lining
03:38up for the Bisaiko Knee, there was some fantastic facial selling, where he almost looked uncertain,
03:43scared that his neck might not hold up like he thought after all, and shoutout to the
03:46commentary team for also pointing this out.
03:48He hit the knee, but Takagi kicked out, and playing off their previous spot where Takagi
03:51was able to counter it, Danielson won with an armbar following a Triangle Choke.
03:56Danielson moves on in the tournament and will face Pac on Dynamite, where no doubt, he will
03:59once again come down with a severe case of neck.
04:02Following this was Tony Storm vs Mina Shirakawa for the custody of Mariah May at ringside.
04:06And the AEW Women's Championship I suppose.
04:08Storm entered in a Statue of Liberty cosplay, which was a great choice, and the match itself
04:12was a decent little bout.
04:14Nothing super special or styled out about it, but nothing bad either.
04:17Just a good, solid wrestling match.
04:19Storm ended up winning with the Storm Zero, and after the match, the question of who will
04:22Mariah May choose was answered.
04:25Both of them.
04:26She made Storm and Shirakawa shake hands, then hug, and then the three of them kissed.
04:31Sure, why not.
04:32Up next was Orange Cassidy vs Zack Sabre Jr., and this is going to sound like such a headass
04:37take, but you know the neck snap spot Zack and a couple of others do, like where their
04:41opponents head in between their feet and then they twist.
04:44It gets me.
04:45Every time.
04:46For a split second I'm like OH THEY JUST BROKE THEIR NECK, and then half a second later
04:49I realise it's pro wrestling.
04:51Anyway, I love that spot, and this match had it, so obviously it's a 5 star match.
04:54These two are great professional wrestlers, and while I think the first 10 minutes of
04:57this wasn't necessarily the best work either of them had done, the last few minutes had
05:01me on the edge of my seat.
05:03There was also a fantastic looking diving DDT from Cassidy, which might be one of the
05:06best ones I've ever seen.
05:08Like Zack went right on his head, like, ooh.
05:12Regardless, the sequence of roll up upon roll up upon roll up at the end was brilliant,
05:15ending with Zack tying Cassidy up in all sorts of knots and forcing him to tap out with,
05:19I mean I want to say it was an arm bar, but it was also like a knee bar and a heel hook.
05:23Zack's pretty good, isn't he?
05:25So, Chris Jericho's match was next, and I think it might have been the worst match
05:29on the card.
05:30I'm not saying those two things are necessarily linked, but they also definitely are.
05:33Look, I don't like this learning tree gimmick, I think it's obnoxious and not in a fun
05:38way, but having said all that, hook pinning Jericho with a better looking Judas Effect
05:42than I think Jericho was ever hit did put a smile on my face, so mission accomplished
05:46I guess.
05:47This match was fine, it would have felt right at home on a Dynamite, and it wouldn't have
05:51been the best match on that show either, it just didn't do a lot for me.
05:54In complete contrast however, the TNT Championship Ladder match might have been my match of the
05:58night if it weren't for a certain main event later on.
06:01This match was absolutely nuts, and I loved every second of it.
06:04Mark Briscoe, Konosuke Takeshita, Dante Martin, ELP, Lio Rush and Jack Perry all put on stellar
06:09performances, honourable mention to Takeshita, who once again proved why he deserves some
06:13sort of meaningful push.
06:14He hit a Brain Buster on an upturned ladder on Dante Martin, he hit a Powerbomb onto a
06:19ladder in the corner on Lio Rush, he hit a Blue Thunderbomb through two tables on the
06:23outside, and the crowd went absolutely ballistic when they thought he was going to win.
06:27Also special shoutout to Mark Briscoe, who I think wanted the award for Most Insane Spot
06:32of the Night, where he jumped off a chair, off the middle rope, and did a senton through
06:36a table on the outside, which also had a ladder and a Takeshita lying on it.
06:40He also did a dive off a ladder set up on the apron over the corner of the ring onto
06:45another table on the outside.
06:47You get the picture.
06:48It was carnage.
06:49Jack Perry won in the end, who I think is the right winner, and this was the best kind
06:52of car crash wrestling.
06:54I had so, so much fun.
06:56Now from the most fun match of the night, to the most curious.
06:59Mercedes Monet vs. Stephanie Vaquer for both TBS and New Japan Strong Women's titles.
07:03The match itself was perfectly fine, nothing super standout, but a really solid match.
07:07But the crowd weren't into it, whether it was because they were on a comedown from the
07:11previous match, or they just weren't feeling the wrestling itself, the reactions were limited
07:15for this one, and they only really came alive when Vaquer hit a big move or two.
07:19Which brings us to the next point.
07:21As the match progressed, the boos for Mercedes Monet got stronger and stronger, despite her
07:25being positioned as the babyface for this match, and by the time the finish came, there
07:29were boos ringing around the whole arena as she made Vaquer tap out.
07:32But quickly, time to move past that, as they hurriedly brought out a returning Britt Baker,
07:37who stared down Monet from the entrance ramp and left.
07:40A fun angle, and a feud I'm looking forward to, I just wonder how they're going to address
07:43this reaction to Mercedes Monet, and if it's an isolated incident, because I don't think
07:48it is.
07:49WrestleDynasty was announced for January 5th in the Tokyo Dome, a new show made up of wrestlers
07:53from New Japan, AEW, CMLL, Ring of Honor and Stardom, so Forbidden Door but in New
07:59Japan basically.
08:01Should be fun.
08:02The semi-main event was Jon Moxley vs Tetsuya Naito for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship,
08:06and this match was also pretty good.
08:08I feel like I'm repeating myself a little bit, but a lot of these matches were just
08:12pretty solid, nothing incredible or amazing, but just good solid grabs.
08:16Moxley hit a Death Rider on Naito with a very late kickout, and in frustration Moxley nearly
08:21used the chair before being stopped by Red Shoots.
08:23It gave Naito enough time to recover and hit a subsequent Destino on Mox, and Naito won
08:28back the title.
08:29I wish I had more to say, but this was...good.
08:32And the main event was Swerve Strickland vs Will Ospreay for the AEW World Title, and
08:36the crowd, and me, were hot for this one.
08:39It started off with a sequence of counters and counter counters, and the crowd went absolutely
08:43insane.
08:44Both men are so over, and they absolutely feel like the future of this company.
08:47While this match definitely had its fair share of story going into it, this one was more
08:51about the wrestling itself, with the two men knowing each other so well over the years.
08:55As Swerve set up for a Piledriver onto the barricade, Ospreay did a Hurricanrana off
08:59it.
09:00There was an incredible counter sequence that ended with a Styles Clash, and a Swerve Stomp
09:03onto the commentary table which made a lovely noise too.
09:06Swerve hit that Piledriver onto the barricade he tried to hit earlier, it's simple set
09:10up and payoff storytelling, but it works.
09:12Ospreay came back into it though, hitting an Oz Cutter for a nearfall, a Stormbreaker
09:15nearfall.
09:16Swerve hit the Hidden Blade on Ospreay, but the Swerve Stomp missed, and when Ospreay
09:20tried to hit another Hidden Blade, Swerve dodged and he hit the referee instead.
09:24This was the only slight negative of the match for me, when Don Callis came out and tried
09:27to give the screwdriver to Ospreay, Prince NaNa got involved and Ospreay nearly stabbed
09:31him with it, but he decided against it because he's a babyface.
09:34And this is what ultimately cost him, as Swerve hit the House Call and a Swerve Stomp for
09:38the nearfall, I thought that would easily be the end of the match, but no, another House
09:42Call and a big pressure is what sealed the deal in the end.
09:45Swerve retained and it was a fantastic match, but there is easily enough left in these two
09:49for a part two down the line, with no interference or shenanigans, and I for one, cannot wait.
09:54Forbidden Door had nothing actively bad on it, at worst it was just fine, with a couple
09:58of bangers peppered in across the show.
10:01This is a 4 out of 5 show for me.
10:03But something's been bothering me throughout this whole review, and I just can't shake
10:07the feeling there's something...what is it?
10:10What's...
10:11Right.
10:12I need to go talk to Oli.
10:15Oli, I need to ask you something.
10:20Let me just finish clicking thumbs up on all the Pipebomb Greater Than Maths comments.
10:25Thumbs up.
10:26It's not as bad as you'd think.
