00:00The world of sports is constantly evolving, and as teams get more popular and owners get
00:05richer, new stadiums are being built bigger and better than ever before.
00:10So grab a seat and get your ticket, because I'm going to take you through a video where
00:13we explore 15 amazing future stadiums.
00:17Number 15.
00:18Addis Ababa National Stadium Ethiopia is one of Africa's largest countries,
00:23so it makes sense that the country is home to one of its largest stadiums.
00:27Designed to emulate the Addi Ababa, which is a yellow flower that blooms all over the
00:31country at the end of the wet season and symbolizes new life, it is quite the sight.
00:36Designed to hold up to 62,000 spectators and contracted out to the company China State
00:41Construction Engineering, it will be set up to host football, rugby, and athletics,
00:46with the stadium also being up to the standards necessary for FIFA's international matches.
00:51And while there have been some hiccups, after all in 2017 a fire at the stadium killed seven
00:56workers and injured 12, it will likely be an incredible structure once it's finally
01:01completed.
01:03Number 14.
01:04Everton Stadium While most stadiums are built on top of a
01:08plot of land, Everton Stadium in Liverpool, England is said to be a little bit different.
01:15That's because unlike almost all other stadiums, it will be built over water.
01:19The watery area in question is Bramley Moor Dock, and this new stadium is due to replace
01:23the old one, Goodison Park, in the 2024-2025 season.
01:28In the not-too-distant past, Bramley Moor was a commercial dock, and while it is no
01:32longer in use, the idea is that the stadium will be part of a larger effort to revitalize
01:36the area, along with the addition of new shops, housing, and entertainment venues.
01:41Regarding the stadium itself, the current plan is to spend about £500 million to build
01:45a 55,000-seat stadium, and in order to keep it in line with the area's vibe, it will
01:50have a brick base and a nod to the area's historic warehouses, along with a sleek steel
01:55and glass roof to give it a modern look.
01:57As such, I'm sure that the stadium will be one of the best in England once it's completed.
02:03Number 13.
02:04Grandestade de Casablanca While most of the world's largest stadiums
02:08can be found in North America, of course, Asia, and Europe, the African country of Morocco
02:13will soon have one that rivals those found on all three of these continents.
02:18Grandestade de Casablanca is set to seat a gargantuan 93,000 spectators, which will make
02:25it the third biggest soccer stadium in Africa and the 14th biggest on the planet.
02:30Designed in a curved envelope shape with colors and textures that draw inspiration from the
02:34Atlantic coastline and accented with ornate shells that cover a landscaped walkway that
02:39wraps around the complex, it truly is spectacular.
02:43In terms of tech, the roof is designed to protect spectators from bad weather, while
02:47the inclined part of the facade maintains a semi-open environment.
02:51To top this off, during the soccer season, the stadium will even double as a semi-open
02:55market, allowing it to further contribute to the economic health of Casablanca.
02:59Therefore, I'm sure that many other Moroccans will be very happy when the Grandestade opens
03:04in 2025.
03:07Number 12.
03:08The Buffalo Bills Buffalo, New York, isn't exactly the most
03:12impressive place out there, after all, its main economic purpose is more or less to act
03:18as a convenient shopping area for Canadians looking for cheap American stuff, and for
03:22years, its football and hockey teams really didn't perform all that well.
03:26However, in recent years, the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League have really
03:30stepped up their game, and so it's fitting that this up-and-coming team will soon be
03:34gifted with a new stadium.
03:36Slated to be opened in 2026, the new stadium will have 62,000 seats and cost a sizable
03:41sum of $1.35 billion.
03:44It's in the shape of a large bowl, the stacked seating will help keep those in attendance
03:48safe from the elements, while also directing much of the noise down to the field.
03:52Beyond this setup, extensive radiant heating will be in place to enhance fan comfort, and
03:56overall, the stadium will have a very modern feel to it, so it should come as little surprise
04:00that many residents of Buffalo are looking forward to opening day.
04:05Number 11.
04:06Manchester City's Metaverse Stadium Recently, the Metaverse has been absolutely
04:11trashed by many for being completely useless, yet it hasn't stopped Manchester City from
04:16becoming the first team to have a stadium in the Metaverse.
04:20Built via a three-year agreement with Sony, it's in currently the proof-of-concept stage,
04:25and as of now will let fans participate in activities at a virtual version of the team's
04:29Etihad Stadium, with their own custom avatars.
04:33Clips from the official trailer show avatars running, dancing, and celebrating together
04:37in the stadium.
04:38While it is certainly pioneering, many have also been pretty critical.
04:42After all, the whole thing does seem kinda silly, and given the gargantuan amounts of
04:45money put into it, it all seems to be a bit underdeveloped, especially since the graphics
04:50are more or less reminiscent of the Mii avatars used on Wii consoles more than ten years ago.
04:55If that wasn't bad enough, the simple reality is that you can get a lot more out of going
04:59to a bar and watching the game than you can from sitting inside the Metaverse, making
05:04the Metaverse Stadium rather pointless.
05:07However, I guess only time will tell whether or not Manchester City fans will warm up to
05:11this idea.
05:13Number 10.
05:14Sheikh Hasina International Cricket Stadium
05:17While Bangladesh is not a country that's well-known for its athletes, one sport that
05:21the country performs exceptionally well in is cricket.
05:24After all, at the time of writing this, they are the seventh-best team in the world, and
05:28so it makes sense that the country is now getting a top-of-the-line stadium.
05:31It's located in a multi-billion-dollar development known as Perbichal Newtown, and it will come
05:35in at a cost of about 140 million.
05:38And while that makes it sound relatively cheap, this will make it the most expensive cricket
05:41stadium in Asia.
05:43As of now, the idea is that it will have a five-storied pavilion, three-tier stands with
05:47a capacity of 50,000 people, and the option to at least add 25,000 additional seats, making
05:53it absolutely incredible in terms of its size.
05:56Beyond the capacity, the actual design of the stadium will be in the shape of a boat,
06:00and it will be here that both the Bangladeshi national cricket team and the Dhaka Dynamites
06:04of the Bangladesh Premier League will play.
06:07Best of all, if all goes to plan, the stadium will be built in the next 25 months or so,
06:11so meaning it won't be too long before it's in service for the public.
06:16Number 9.
06:17The Esports Arena In recent years, esports such as League of
06:20Legends, Fortnite, and CSGO have been all the rage, and so it makes sense that there's
06:24an equally vibrant market of esports fanatics who want to see their favorite e-athletes
06:29compete in person.
06:30While many facilities have been set up to host esports tournaments, Toronto is getting
06:34ahead of the curve a little bit by becoming one of the first cities to have a dedicated
06:38esports arena and hotel.
06:41Located on the Harbourfront, it's an entirely privately-funded building that was originally
06:44slated to hold about 7,200 spectators and look like a massive wave.
06:49However, while this was the plan until 2021, in 2022 it was decided that the proposed arena
06:54was too bulky in size, so much so that it would disrupt the views of the adjacent Princess
06:59Boulevard while also not integrating itself well with the surrounding architecture.
07:04As a result, a new design is now being undertaken, and while not as grandiose, it's still set
07:08to be an impressive building.
07:10Featuring a long base with a wood-like finish, a large LED screen, and an expansive green
07:15roof, the building will now be far more sustainable and far less disruptive to the overall vibe
07:20of the neighborhood.
07:22It will also be 30 stories tall, cost hundreds of millions to build, and will feature prominently
07:26in Toronto's Exhibition Grounds, and as such, I think it's fair to say it's a major project.
07:328.
07:34The Oakland A's New Stadium While the Oakland A's may be a small-market
07:39team, they are relatively well-known worldwide.
07:42After all, they're the team that was featured in the popular movie Moneyball, and while
07:46Oakland may be small, it's increasingly gaining more and more attention as one of the best
07:50cities in California.
07:51Yet, what's been far more interesting as a development is that of its new stadium.
07:56On one hand, there's a fair chance that the Oakland A's will move to Las Vegas.
08:00After all, the city's been looking to host professional sports teams for a while now,
08:03and there's been a consistent dialogue about making this transition.
08:06However, there's also a chance that the Oakland A's will stay put and build a new stadium
08:10to replace the aging Ring Central Coliseum, and if they do, the Danish architecture firm
08:16BIG has a state-of-the-art plan that's absolutely incredible.
08:20In these plans, the stadium design includes an undulating roofline topped with a grassy
08:25park.
08:26The elevated park will be complete with trees and a winding pathway allowing up to 10,000
08:30additional fans to view the games.
08:33Within the stadium itself, there will be 27,000 seats that will rise up at a curved angle,
08:37bringing spectators as close to home plate as possible.
08:40It's this combination that would hypothetically make the stadium one of the best in the league,
08:44and on my end, I just hope that it ends up being built.
08:477.
08:49The Calgary Events Center While the Saddledome is one of the NHL's most
08:53famous arenas, it was built all the way back in 1980, and it's beginning to show signs
08:57of aging.
08:59As such, for a while, there were plans to build the much more modern Calgary Events
09:02Center.
09:03Slated to hold up to 19,000 spectators, the arena was to be both practical and fashion-forward.
09:09After all, while designed to be used for both hockey and non-hockey-related events, its
09:13fresh look and sleek metal ribbon wrapping around the outside of the building would have
09:17made it a welcome addition to the city's landscape.
09:20However, it was slated to cost about $610 million, and while this was fine at first,
09:25when this estimate was up to $625 million, the Calgary Flames hockey franchise claimed
09:31the costs were too high to justify construction, especially since the team was worried that
09:35it could have increased with time.
09:37This meant that the city of Calgary, which had agreed to a 50-50 split with the Calgary
09:40Flames on the project, had to also announce that it would be scrapped, despite the fact
09:45that they wanted the build to continue.
09:47Things got even messier when it was revealed that the city remained on the hook for about
09:51$11 million since they had spent some money on the various early stages of the deal, costing
09:56taxpayers their hard-earned money.
09:58So it goes without saying that there is now some bad blood between the city of Calgary
10:02and the Calgary Flames, and so it is unlikely that any new stadiums will be built in Calgary
10:07in the near future.
10:096.
10:10Guangzhou Evergrande Football Stadium
10:13While China may not be known for its soccer culture, the Chinese government has been pushing
10:18to make the sport more mainstream.
10:20This has led to the creation of impressive stadiums and extra funding for teams so they
10:24can buy world-class talent abroad, and to date, the largest stadium to be under construction
10:29is the Guangzhou Evergrande Football Stadium.
10:33Created to house one of China's most successful soccer teams, it is slated to be the largest
10:37soccer-only stadium in the world, as it will come in at a capacity of 100,000 and have
10:421.6 million square feet of space.
10:45Beyond the capacity, what sets this mega-stadium apart is its massive lotus flower-shaped roof
10:50and beautiful aesthetics.
10:51However, with a slated cost of $1.85 billion, this will all be rather expensive, and it
10:58is likely that these expenses will stop the stadium from ever actually being completed.
11:02You see, despite the fact that the stadium was supposed to be finished in 2022, in late
11:062021, Evergrande, who is the developer behind the stadium, began to run into some serious
11:12financial troubles.
11:13After accruing hundreds of billions of dollars in debt across about 800 developments, the
11:18company didn't have enough free cash flow to deliver, causing many analysts to speculate
11:23that China may even be on the brink of a Lehman Brothers moment akin to the 2008 financial
11:28crisis.
11:29While many of Evergrande's projects have been on the chopping block, one of the most
11:32prominent has been this football stadium.
11:35That's because in November of 2021, a deal was brokered where the Chinese government
11:39would transfer ownership of the land and the stadium's grounds to the state-owned Guangzhou
11:43City Construction Investment Group, and in exchange sent $818 million to Evergrande.
11:50And reports seem to indicate that there still may be plans to complete the stadium at some
11:54point.
11:55I guess only time will tell whether or not that will actually happen.
11:585.
11:59Votenikos Arena While it's not all that uncommon for a team
12:03to be denied a request for a new stadium, Greek club Panathinaikos has been one of the
12:08few to face decades of rejection.
12:10You see, the club currently resides in Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium, which is the problem because
12:15it was initially inaugurated in 1922 and is over 100 years old.
12:20This advanced age has necessitated a move, and the first talks of one were held all the
12:25way back in the late 1990s.
12:26However, it wasn't until 2006 that a solid plan was laid out, with the idea being that
12:31a 42,000-seat stadium with an undulating roof and eight levels of floor space would
12:36be created, taking inspiration from the Portuguese team Porto Estádio Adrago.
12:41This new stadium would have been the largest in Greece.
12:43However, when the 2008 financial crisis hit, the project was put on hold, despite costing
12:48a reasonably low sum of 80 million euros.
12:51Now, for a while, the new Votenikos Arena simply remained on the back burner, although
12:55when a surprise turn of events in 2020, it was announced that construction would recommence.
13:00In 2022, more concrete plans were announced to the public, and within these plans, it
13:05was announced that the construction would take three years and the stadium would be
13:08built in the Votenikos area, with this making sense since it's mostly home to vacant and
13:13dilapidated storage and industrial facilities.
13:15Beyond the location, the idea is more or less to stick to the original planned design and
13:20have a set of football, basketball, volleyball arenas, all with other facilities built to
13:24make the complex more complete.
13:26However, while these plans sound great, they come with a catch.
13:30As an exchange for a 99-year lease for this new stadium, the team agreed to give the Greek
13:35government their old stadium.
13:37However, given how much better the new stadium will be, most would agree that this trade
13:40is worth it.
13:42Number 4.
13:43The All-Wooden Stadium So, it should come as little surprise that
13:47most of the stadiums on this list are in big market cities.
13:51After all, it takes a lot of money to make an impressive stadium, and more often than
13:54not, lower-tier teams will be cost-effective in their choice of a new venue.
13:59However, Forest Green Rovers is a notable exception.
14:03Hailing from the town of Nalesworth in England, they're in the third-highest league of English
14:07football, meaning that they more or less only receive local coverage.
14:10However, in 2016, they announced plans to make a 5,000-seat eco-friendly stadium.
14:16Spearheaded by team owner and green energy magnate Dale Vence, the idea is to make a
14:20two-field stadium that's completely made out of timber wood.
14:24The hope is that the soccer fields within the stadium will be organic, free of pesticides,
14:29free of fertilizers, and free of chemicals, and it may even be the case that the grass
14:33will be tended to by an electric lawnmower powered by solar energy.
14:37Outside the stadium itself, this so-called eco-park will have electric vehicle and bike
14:41charging stations, while around 500 trees and 1.8 kilometers of hedgerows will be planted
14:47at the site to promote biodiversity.
14:50There will also be a business park on site in order to bring in additional revenue, making
14:54the stadium a sustainable enterprise in more ways than one.
14:57And to top this all off, the old stadium that's being abandoned will be put to good use, as
15:02it will be torn down and replaced with high-quality, low-carbon housing.
15:05Now, it should be noted that there has been some backlash.
15:08After all, many stakeholders are worried that the construction will cause a lot of noise
15:11and disruption.
15:12However, despite those concerns, Forest Green Rovers have recently been given approval to
15:17start building, and broke ground in early 2023.
15:20And in any case, given how eco-friendly it is, I'd say that the benefits of making this
15:24new stadium outweigh any temporary inconveniences.
15:283.
15:29The Cattedrale Ever since 1926, the San Siro has been AC
15:34and Inter Milan's home.
15:35It's considered to be one of the most energetic stadiums on the planet, and has a capacity
15:39of more than 80,000 people, making it the largest stadium in Italy and one of the largest
15:44in Europe.
15:45But while the San Siro truly is a cultural icon, it's nearly a hundred years old and
15:49in need of a replacement.
15:51This replacement is taking shape in the form of the so-called Cattedrale.
15:55Italian for the word cathedral, the original plan was to tear down the old San Siro in
15:59order to make the new stadium.
16:01But after heavy backlash and injunction was filed, and the force behind preserving the
16:05stadium is so strong that even Italy's Minister of Culture insisted that the San Siro would
16:09remain standing.
16:11Instead, AC and Inter Milan will simply move to La Cattedrale.
16:14While it's not yet exactly clear where this new stadium will be built, in the event that
16:18San Siro remains standing, what is clear is that La Cattedrale will be impressive.
16:24Set to be a rectangular 60,000-seat stadium, it has a super-modern design that takes inspiration
16:29from landmarks such as the Duomo del Milano and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, encircled
16:34by vertical fins.
16:36These fins will rise up from the stadium to support a glass wall that encloses an arena
16:40known as the Daylight Galleria.
16:42Meanwhile, the actual bowl of the stadium is intended to be one of the most intimate
16:47in Europe, as it will bring spectators as close as possible to the field of play.
16:51There are also plans to populate the area surrounding the stadium with a sports and
16:55leisure district, a subterranean parking lot, and large amounts of green space.
16:59However, given the fact that La Cattedrale may be relocated and is slated to cost more
17:03than a billion euros, it almost certainly won't be completed by the previously stated
17:09deadline, and if funding is pulled, it may not be built at all.
17:142.
17:15The Intuit Dome The NBA is easily one of North America's
17:18most dynamic sports leagues, and in recent years has seen massive growth in popularity
17:23at the expense of slower-paced sports such as American football and baseball.
17:28This has made its franchises billions, and one franchise that will use these newly-gotten
17:32gains to invest in itself is the Los Angeles Clippers.
17:36Back in 2017, the decision was made with the city of Inglewood to build a new home
17:40of the Los Angeles Clippers in their city, which for reference is within the Los Angeles
17:44metropolitan area.
17:46This is important because for the entirety of the team's history, it has never had
17:50a tangible amount of ownership in any of their arenas.
17:54After all, at the current moment, the Los Angeles Clippers share a Crypto.com arena
17:58in downtown Los Angeles with the Los Angeles Lakers and the LA Kings, and several other
18:03franchises.
18:04This means that the team also has to undergo long and annoying changes to turn the arena
18:08to its own home arena.
18:10Clippers owner Steve Vollmer has made the building of a new stadium a priority.
18:13Now, actually starting construction proved difficult, after all, lawsuits surrounding
18:18wasteful land usage and unfair competition made it so that the building got delayed.
18:22However, in 2021, construction finally started, and once the stadium is completed in 2024,
18:28it will be a top-of-the-line facility designed to seat 18,000 people.
18:33It's going to include a practice facility, sports medicine clinic, team offices, retail
18:36space, and a large outdoor plaza with public basketball courts.
18:40The exterior is also said to be quite impressive, as it will be a swirled dome with an ultra-modern
18:45panel, an indoor-outdoor approach that allows for a naturally ventilated entrance and upper
18:50concourse, and a solar-optimized building shell that will balance natural light and
18:54solar heat gain.
18:56And while it will likely cost about $2 billion once all is said and done, I think you're
19:00going to agree that this new stadium is probably going to be a great home for the Clippers.
19:041.
19:06Miami Freedom Park When it comes to soccer stadiums, few will
19:10be quite as functional or as impressive as Miami Freedom Park.
19:14Set to be the home stadium of David Beckham's Inter-Miami soccer team, it will come at a
19:19relatively modest 26,000 seats, yet what it lacks in capacity it makes up for in design.
19:25Featuring a lightweight, translucent roof that's in the shape of the club's mascot
19:28animal, the flamingo, it's a beautiful thing from the outside, while on the inside, the
19:33seating area is set up so that one side is filled with spectators and the other with
19:37elegant cocktail bars.
19:39Outside the structure, a massive screen will allow anyone in the adjacent park to watch
19:42the game, allowing even those who don't buy tickets to enjoy the area.
19:46However, those seated in the park or stadium aren't the only ones who are going to benefit
19:50from the creation of this park.
19:52That's because the 131-acre park is set to be home to 400,000 square feet of office space,
19:58750 hotel rooms, 600,000 square feet of commercial and retail space, and 5,400 parking spots.
20:04And it will include shops, restaurants, and even a technology hub, making it a massive
20:08center for commerce and leisure in the area.
20:11While this will come at quite the cost, after all this privately funded venture has a slated
20:16price tag of $1 billion, it will likely be a fruitful investment once the stadium is
20:21finally completed in 2025.
20:23However, while Miami Freedom Park may be a top-of-the-line facility, it's ran into a
20:27major roadblock early on in the planning process.
20:30You see, the area that the stadium is set to be built on was the previous land used
20:34for the Mel Rees Golf Course, and while it was initially thought that the land was absolutely
20:38fine, a geological survey discovered that the soil at the site was absolutely deplorable.
20:44According to CBS Miami, it has, quote, arsenic contamination levels that are more than twice
20:49what is allowed by law.
20:51Barium and lead levels are also too high and there's debris in the soil that could cause
20:54physical hazards, end quote.
20:57So it's presumed that some cleanup probably happened, as in 2022, permission was given
21:01to give InterMiami a no-bid 99-year lease on the site, and it has since been announced
21:06that the Miami Freedom Park will be completed by the year 2025.
